WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term Four, Week Four, 4 November 2022

“No Planet B” Water pollution What is water pollution? Water pollution occurs when pollutants contaminate water sources and render the water unfit for use in drinking, cooking, cleaning, swimming, and other activities. Chemicals, garbage, bacteria, and parasites are examples of these contaminants. How does water pollution affect the environment? Water contamination can make it dangerous for both people and the environment. All life on Earth depends on water as a resource. When a water source is contaminated by pollution, it may cause human health problems including cancer or heart disorders. How does water pollution start? Sometimes, chemical waste from manufacturers is thrown directly into the ground or into rivers and lakes. When sprayed to farms, pesticides (chemicals that kill insects) frequently reach surface water and groundwater in significant amounts. Groundwater is immediately affected by leaks from liquid subterranean storage tanks, such as gasoline. Here's some ways to prevent water pollution: pick up any trash and dispose of it in a rubbish container. If fertiliser spills onto paved surfaces, blow or sweep it back onto the grass. Avoid fertilising the lawn just before it rains, since the chemicals will end up in waterways and storm drains. Compost or mulch any grass or yard trash, and if you can't compost it, leave it in your yard instead. Leaves shouldn't be blown into the street; this destroys and clogs storm drains. Wash your automobile or outdoor equipment in areas where water can flow to a gravel or grassy area rather than the street. Pouring engine oil down a storm drain is not a good idea, instead, bring it to the neighbourhood auto parts shop, it’s free anyway! Put sand, cat litter, or another absorbent material on the spill. Once the liquid has solidified, sweep it up and dump it in the trash.

Tennis at Sunderland Does smacking a nylon rubber ball over a 3 feet net sound interesting to you? With a racket of course, and not your hand, if you are interested in that, then tennis could possibly become your next “favorite” sport. The program runs from 3:30 – 4:30 every Monday afterschool and PE gear is recommended to be worn while playing. Since our school is in an excellent location, with access to multiple sporting complexes, such as the Trust Arena, West wave pools, Te Pai courts and many more, we can play at these facilities, therefore, you must find a way to transport to those venues. For tennis you will have to walk to the Te Pai Tennis courts which is approximately a 250m walk from the school, and a good warmup. The teacher in charge is Mr. Devereux, and he himself is a member of the Te Pai tennis club therefore what’s good about that is, we can play with the rackets there (if you don’t have one) as well as the balls offered there. So, a huge thanks to Mr. Devereux for allowing us access to the courts. The Te Pai Tennis court has 9 official game courts, going from the standard Astro to Australian Open verified hard courts. The experience is unreal to play on those surfaces, especially if you’ve never played tennis before and is curious about the feeling of surfaces seen on people playing on TV. The Afterschool tennis program is for all people wanting to learn to play tennis or just having fun and enjoying the sport of tennis. So, if you’re free on Monday afterschool, and wanting to get fitter and healthier, playing tennis is an excellent way to improve it. Ask Mr. Devereux for more details!
