WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 17, Term Three, Week Two, 6 August 2021

Dear Parents Week Two of Term Three has been another wonderful week – the students have settled really well, and all classes are making great progress. I have been particularly impressed with our Year 0 students, who appear to have made an excellent transition into Primary School life. Some of the young ones have already joined sports teams, with a new Basketball team being formed to accommodate this interest, with two trainings already having taken place. Our Open Evening was a great success last night with much interest again shown in our school. I wish to acknowledge the near on 30 student guides we had on the night and the 15 staff who supported us with this marketing opportunity. For your interest, our last Open Day of the year will be held on Saturday 18th September, between 10.30am and 2.30pm. On Wednesday, our Year 4 to 6 children were fortunate to attend the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra at the Aotea Centre. The theme was ‘Super Heroes’ and from the feedback from Mrs Lim, it sounded like everyone had a great time and the children were well behaved and a credit to our school.

OPTIONS EVENING THURSDAY 12 AUGUST 7.00PM – 8.30PM AUDITORIUM

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

On Friday, our school held a Lockdown Drill. I want to feedback to the community that this exercise went very well. We train to have the children stay within the school buildings in preparation for a serious storm, roaming dogs or swarming bees etc. The children remain in their classroom with the light off until the risk passes. We use an outside agency, ‘Harrison Tew’, to oversee the training for the staff and children and run the drill for us. They were again very complimentary with how positive our children are during this exercise. Thank you again for your support. Have a wonderful weekend.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Moving On Black hats went flying in the air as shouts of afterparties and sighs of relief filled the space. I ducked out to the nearest exit where my mother found me. "Yuvette!" "Mom." I embraced her and buried my face into her aging curls. I released a jagged breath and watched the foggy trail it left behind in the wintery air. "Congratulation’s honey, you made it to the end." Moms’ tears slid down her face catching a bit of frost when they hit her chin. I wiped at them with the backs of my fingers. "Happy tears." she clarified. I nodded whilst saying "I feel as though everything is just beginning." ~~~ I’ve been staring at my screen for the past hour, sat at my desk like I never really graduated now I’m looking for a job. I've been job hunting since last fall, but nothing seems to be screaming out to me. If only it was that easy. Mum is close to retiring and I need to plant my two feet and grow up. Mom always said that I was just a late bloomer at everything growing taller, hitting puberty, catching up to everyone. I graduated with straight C+'s not that great but average. I pushed away from my desk with a heavy sigh and moved to my full length mirror that was propped up against the wall and swivelled my chair to face my reflection. I scrutinized myself staring into my strained eyes, the bounce of my curls, my classic black glasses shimmered in my reflection. An average girl with average looks barley known to society and even those in my day-to-day life I only had a couple of friends that got me through stages of my life but nothing more. I've been like this for as long as I can remember. Stupid really, I know that everyone else hasn't lost themselves maybe I'm the only one. Or maybe I just never found me. My door creaked open. "Yuvette, you should come down to celebrate." "I'll be down shortly." She nodded slowly and left my door hanging ajar. The chilly breeze tumbled in. I slipped on a sweater over my turtleneck and followed her. I paused at the doorframe and rested my head on the side of the door. Repeating all the facts about myself in a steady whisper. "I have a Mom, my father left when I was three, he is in Germany and calls on a Christmas morning, he calls me his 'Engel' with his thick accent. I have no other family except my mum and my dad’s phone calls." I suck in a deep breath. And straighten myself as I tip-toe down the stairs. I used to do it out of fun when I was little now it’s a force of habit. My eyes first sit on my degree that I only received today yet it was already framed and placed as a centre piece on the table, gazing beyond that I saw the various varieties of food lain before me my favourites mixed with my mother’s favourites and a few traditional dishes as well. "Oh. Mom. You don't have to do all this." I bear hug her from behind this time. "But I'm so proud of you. And truthfully this'll save me from cooking for a few days."

"But I'm so proud of you. And truthfully this'll save me from cooking for a few days." I chuckle as I seat myself opposite her. We sat in silence as we honoured the food. Just like all the other dinners except with my degree being placed in the middle. With our stomachs full we rose to show our gratitude as we then started to clean and pack away the remaining food. "A bachelor Commerce degree." My mum sighed as she stacked the plates on top of each other whilst I stacked bowls and collected the cutlery. "Yeah." There was a heavy breathiness in my reply. "What is your next step?" Mom asked. A simple question but I paused for a beat. An arrow to my head. Fear fogged my mind. "Yuvette? Yuvette!' a loud crash soon followed. I couldn't see, the top of my vison pitch black and the bottom blurred with water reflecting a bright, white light. ~~~ I awoke with a jolt my back was numb from the cold, I don't remember falling asleep. My memories flooded back though it all felt like it was one big dream or a build up to a terrible nightmare. I tried to sit up but my shoulder buckled and I slipped back down. "Woah! Don't try getting up just yet." I heard Mom say. "Ok. Where are you?" I asked a sudden wave of nausea hit me. "Oh... Honey, can you see any fingers." "No..." My breaths became more shallow. "Okay what can you see?" "White, bright white." To be continued… By: Krisha Prasad, Year 11
