ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 18, Term One, Week Eleven, 8 April 2022

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland, On Tuesday this week we were able to celebrate our 2021 Scholars, who achieved so very well in the examinations last year. At the assembly, I defined what a Scholar is: ‘A person who has studied a subject for a long time and knows a lot about it; an intelligent and well-educated person who knows a particular subject very well’. All these students who received Certificates and Scholars Ties this week have characteristics in common. They all have natural ability, no question about that but more importantly they have a huge capacity to work hard, and they will have put in the hours to achieve their wonderful results last year. Most of these students also are heavily involved with activities outside of the classroom too Sports, Music, Drama - but they were able to balance those commitments to produce some outstanding results in 2021. Congratulations to all our Scholars.

To be kept up to date with Covid-19 and school information, please advise any changes in your address, phone or email to Sunderland@acgedu.com

Chess Nationals 2021 It’s been a while since I’ve written about chess, mostly because it’s been a while since we’ve played in a chess tournament together as a team. The last big tournament we played in was the 2021 Chess Power National Finals which was held late last year, but it’s better late than never, so I bring you an article on the tournament, our results and my general experience and impression of the tournament. Due to COVID, this tournament ended up being held online rather than in person. I’m not going to ramble on about how this works, as I know I have done so many times before, but I will say that this tournament was quite well run. It featured many different fun games between rounds with a lot of prizes up for grabs in different quiz games or comic strip challenges. Obviously, it would’ve been preferable for many to hold it over-the-board where we could socialise with the other players and do other interactive activities but the side activities during the tournament were still very enjoyable, even if we didn’t quite get the ‘traditional’ nationals which would feature chocolate chess sets and other things which COVID prevented from happening. However, every cloud has a silver lining and the fact that it was online saved a lot of people the time and money of travelling to another city and organising other things such as food and accommodation. As for results, we placed third, behind Mount Roskill Grammar and Hamilton Boys High School*, which isn’t a bad result, considering we were one of, if not the, youngest team in the tournament: with three year nines (Yolanda Chang, Eric Mironov and Anya Thurner) and a year six (Sophia Feng). Eric Mironov also won a placing with third overall. Between winning prizes in chess quiz games and playing intense games, I enjoyed this tournament a lot more than I thought I would. Even though I didn’t get to meet all my opponents and friends in real life, I still had a great time with my games and the general environment of the tournament. *Apologies if I’ve made a mistake here, it’s been a while, but I do know that we came third based on the bronze medal sitting in my room.

Sunderland on Service at ACG Sunderland Dear parents and students, as you maybe knowing service is a crucial value that should be practised by all ages. Here at Sunderland we want to recognise those who already do active selfless service at home or in their community, but most importantly we would like those who don’t really do active service to be given a chance and to be educated about service, and this can be reached through Sunderland On Service (S.O.S). What is our Mission statement? To develop the values of service and respect by helping others in our school and community. To actively contribute within our communities, display values of selflessness, enthusiasm and determination. How to get involved or get your badge? We will be putting up information about different activities that can be done on our notice board and will be posting more information soon. You can collect a sheet at reception to fill in with your hours or find it on blackboard, and it can be handed back to reception so that we can award you for your outstanding service. Anything you want to count as your hours should be done as a volunteer, meaning you shouldn’t be paid for doing it. Remember to keep the service age appropriate. Below is the information for the badges:
