Vol 16, Term Four, Week Seven, 27 November 2020

Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland This morning I began my newsletter early before I rushed out the door to take four young athletes across to Mt Smart stadium to compete in the Year Seven and Eight Auckland Championships.

Nikko Kelly; Fabian Villars, Amber Carnie and ShantiPushpal Ramachandra are represented ACG Sunderland and the Norwest in this competition.

We will post their results next week. However, the photos on the right are of the same athletes competing at the Norwest Championships last week.

Nikko was first and Fabian third in the 1500m; Nikko first, Fabian fourth in the 800m. Amber was second in the 1500m and ShantiPushpal was 2nd in the 100m.

Lucas Howe narrowly missed out from making the Auckland Championships – coming fourth in his final.

Thursday was also the day 17 young Primary athletes competed in the Henderson Zone Champs being held at the Trust. This year is perhaps extra special as we are also hosting one of the events, and Mr Baker and Mr Stephens were able to secure some graduates to help out.

I’m sure everyone had a fantastic day.

College Legacy Day will be on Friday 27th November.

On Thursday afternoon, the college was entertained by a number of bands and musicians who are performing in a special one-off performance.

This is partly because we missed out on live performances from our Battle of the Bands and secondly because we believe the students have done so very well. We like to see some rewards also.

Today, Friday, is Legacy Day. A huge day for our school. The graduating class come back into Sunderland and host the Lower College for the entire day – with games, fun and laughter.

Every year I am so very impressed with how everyone just embraces our core values and does an amazing job.

Last week our Primary students enjoyed their sunny lunchtime riding their scooters and manoeuvring around the track set up on the asphalt.

Norwest Athletics

Fabian Villars, Nikko Kelly, Lucas Howe, Amber Carnie and ShantiPushpal Ramacharand took part in the Norwest Athletics competition.

All the runners did very well.

Nikko won the 800m and 1500m races.

Fabian came 3rd in the 1500m.

Amber came 2nd in the 800m and 1500m races.

ShantiPushpal made the finals in the 100m race and came 2nd.

Lucas made the finals of the 200m.

Fabian, Nikko, Amber and ShantiPushpal have been selected to take part in the AAIMS Athletics Championships which occurred yesterday.

The Teacher Band ‘Geek Chic’: Interview Part 3 In Sunderland, some amazing teachers are part of the teacher band, Geek Chic. This week is the last interview, closing it with Mr O’ Connor. We are really grateful that we had the opportunity to interview all members in the teacher band. Thank you again to all the teachers who have replied and gave up their time for our interview.

Mr O’ Connor, our music teacher, is an amazing electric guitarist in the band. He responded to all of our questions sincerely. Here are some interesting replies he gave us.

Could you tell me briefly about the teacher band?

A lot of staff members were keen to put their new musical skills to a purpose and focus. I think they were also inspired by the students who were in Battle of the Bands. So we decided to put together a band of teachers to also inspire the students through the motivation and inspiration that we got from them.

What was your favourite song that you have covered with the band?

I do like “I Wanna be Sedated” by the Ramones – despite the title. It’s a really amped up song but it is really interesting to play as a band.

What is the reason of choosing the instrument that you play now in the band?

I don’t play much electric guitar these days and I thought that this would be the time to have more solos and learn it again. I love the sound of it as well. It was a great chance to practise and take in part in songs with the band, so I chose to play the electric guitar for the teacher band, Geek Chic.

What is your favourite part of being in the band?

It’s hard to explain my feelings of being part of the band. It’s just fun. Playing fast songs, nice and loud – what could be better?

What do you want to tell our staffs and students about the upcoming performances about your band?

Be prepared to be impressed!!!

We thank Mr O’ Connor again, for willingly participating in our interview. This was our last interview for the teacher band, ‘Geek Chic’. Our teacher band will have their final performance of the year in our last week so be prepared and be impressed, just like what Mr O’ Connor has told us!

Sunderland Second-Hand Uniform Shop The shop is open. Please ask at reception for access.

We are taking good quality uniform items for the second-hand shop. Blazers must be dry cleaned.

We will continue to use the entrance at number 44 Patiki Road to access our shop site at number 40 Patiki road until further notice as the site works are taking longer than anticipated– note access is very clearly sign posted to avoid any confusion.
