ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 14, Term Four, Week Two, 25 October 2019
Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland Other than the storm that hit Auckland this week, Sunderland has been very settled as the Seniors continue with their Cambridge examinations and our Upper Primary and Lower College prepare for our internal examinations. Again, I have been very impressed with how settled the school has been. The turf development continues at the back of the school with the basketball and seated areas almost complete. I would hope that the netball area is completed early next week. I know the students are keen to utilise these new facilities.
With the wet and windy conditions hitting this week, we have postponed the streambank visits for Year 1/2CF, 1SB and 1NG – I understand these have been reprogrammed for late November. Much work has taken place to plan for all the camps this year. Year Six to Year Eleven all go out towards the end of this year. I wish to acknowledge Mr Philip Keen for all his work with the College and Mr Pavel Granger with imminent Year Six trip to Northland.

Celebrating National Grandparents Day with a very special Nana New Zealand’s National Grandparents Day is a day to celebrate the happiness that grandparents can bring to a young person’s life, and to highlight just how much they are respected, appreciated and adored. Whether related by blood, or related by love, the strong bond formed between many grandparents and their grandchildren is deep and enduring. Abigail Cosgrove is a Year 4 student at ACG Sunderland and this lucky eight-year-old is fortunate enough to see her beloved nana, Jackie Cosgrove, every day. Together they read books, share stories and enjoy great adventures. Nana is clearly a very special person in her life, as Abigail explains. • What sort of things do you like doing with Nana? I like reading books with her, she drives me places, on Saturdays we watch America’s Got Talent, sometimes we shop together. • What are your favourite things about Nana? I like that she gives warm hugs, she reads great books to me and I like that she spends her time with me. • How different do you think things were when your Nana went to school? Teachers wrote on chalk boards not white boards. And most people left school once they turned 16 and went to work. • If you could do anything, what would be your perfect day with Nana? I would like to have lots of fun with her and make her laugh. • How do you show your Nana how important she is to you? I normally do something special for her. I put balloons in the family room sometimes to surprise her and make her happy. I like to hug Nana and she calls me a “perfect child”.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Borneo Trip
ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland
In December 2020, a group of 15 college students and 2 teachers will be going to Borneo to participate in a community service trip. The main focus of the trip involves a community project, such as building a bus shelter, a school block, a toilet block or a water well. To participate in such activities, we need to fundraise for the materials used in the construction process. We have thought of many ways in which to fundraise for the community project, such as sausage sizzles, bake sales, selling Eco Store soap, specially designed t-shirts/tote bags and many more that are yet to be announced. Our most consistently available method of donation is our GiveALittle page, and we would very much appreciate any donation given on that page, as it is essential that we raise enough money to provide infrastructure to the developing village that we will be staying with in Borneo. Please have a look at our page. Our team, along with the people in Borneo, will be more than grateful! https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-us-provide-schoolinginfrastructure?fbclid=IwAR2BPmTfiu_j_YaVkEZIo5HpuKKLLQTP7CDwH8s71U5ERQpEzcut9jbguBk Ecostore soaps are available from receptions, or one of the Borneo team students, for $2.50. A dollar from each soap will go directly to the community project. Keep an eye out for our next exciting fundraising venture.

Term Four Charity – NorWest Care Trust
In Term Four, the Student Leadership team is supporting the NorWest Care Trust. The NorWest Care Trust works to ensure that everyone in our local community can enjoy the holiday season, by hand making and delivering Christmas hampers for the families who are in need. We are excited about the difference that we could make to our local community through the work of the NorWest Care Trust at this important time of year. For the first part of our service, each of the six Houses will have a section of three Christmas trees displayed on their House wall in the atrium. To decorate the trees, we would like to offer you the opportunity to sponsor an ornament. Each ornament will be decorated with the name of the family that sponsors it, and the ornaments will vary in colour and size depending on the amount donated: blue symbolises a $10 donation, red symbolises a $20 donation, silver symbolises a $30 donation and gold symbolise a donation of $50 or more. Smaller or anonymous donations can be placed in a jar that will be under each tree. You are welcome to take your ornament home at the end of term four as a memento. At the end of the year, the House with the most money donated will get a reward. To sponsor an ornament, please fill out the form attached and return it to reception with your donation OR transfer your donation to the ACG Sunderland account: 03 0252 0820953 00. Use your child’s House (McDonald, Tong, Fleming, Whenuapai, Waitakere, or Findlay) as the reference and do not forget to include the name you would like to appear on your decoration. Alongside the Christmas tree decorations, we will also be running a mystery bucket game. The aim for the students is to fill up the House boxes at reception with donations. The Leaders of the box that is the fullest every two weeks will get dunked at lunch time. This fun game will give students the opportunity to donate to a worthy cause. Six donation boxes will be left in the Reception area and labelled with McDonald, Tong, Fleming, Whenuapai, Waitakere, and Findlay. Please place all non-perishable food donations in the box of your choice. Thank you for all your support.
Trophies
Please return all cups and trophies from Prizegiving 2018 to Mrs Davies or leave at reception. These all should be back, but we still have some outstanding. Please return by Tuesday 29 October.
Whole School Picnic
This is this term. This has already been charged against students accounts in Term Three.
Lost Property
