WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 14, Term Four, Week Three, 01 November 2019 Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland A change of writer for the newsletter this week as Mr Villars is away from Sunderland until the end of next week. He is currently in Busan in South Korea and will be in Seoul for the weekend attending some educational fairs, meeting some agents and hopefully catching up with some of the parents of our international students who are based there.

This week the focus for most Sunderland students has been on examinations. Our senior students have now completed the third week of the Cambridge examination period, with two more to go we are now over halfway through the examinations for 2019 and some students are starting to have their final papers. I have been very impressed with the level of focus and commitment of the senior students with tutorials well attended, extra questions being asked of staff and students using all the time available to them. With hard work comes good rewards so I do look forward to seeing what should be an excellent set of results when they come out in January next year. The A-Level students will have their marks posted online on the evening of the ninth of January and the IGCSE group on the sixteenth of January. Students will be given login details for the results website before they leave for the school holidays so they can access their results online.

Our Year Five to Ten students have completed their final internal school examinations this week and will now be looking forward to getting their results back over the course of next week. The week of getting papers back and reviewing the answers, seeing what was done well and not done well is one of the more important learning periods of the year. If this process is done well, mistakes should not be seen as a negative but more a learning opportunity and to improve understanding for the following year. Staff will also be starting the report writing process and next steps for students will be in this document that students will be given at the end of Term Four. A focus on those next steps in 2020 here at Sunderland will continue the learning journey of students towards reaching their potential.

From a property point of view progress has been made this week on the turfing project at the back of the school. Our bottom basketball court is all finished and being used by the students and the netball court is nearly ready. By the middle of next week the students seating area outside the Technology workshop will also be complete. Visually this is making a big difference to the back of the school and I am sure the students will enjoy the use of the upgraded facilities.

Next week along with our examination reviews there are a number of activities and events happening around the school. • Our Year Five and Six students will have a visit from our local Community Constable for their Keeping Ourselves Safe programme on Monday and Thursday • On Wednesday there will be a fundraising sausage sizzle at lunchtime for the College to support our group of students travelling to Borneo – this money will go towards the work they will be doing in a local village up there so this represents a great cause. There will also be information out soon from this group about sales of branded tote bags • On Thursday and Friday Mrs Chartrand and the Year Four class will have their annual camp at Motu Moana and I am sure they will have a great time • Our annual Transition sessions will also take place next Thursday with the Transition to Primary session at 3.30pm and the Transition to College at 7.00pm – I look forward to seeing a lot of our new families and current families at these events • On Friday our Year Seven students have their annual Science fieldtrip to Long Bay with Mrs Barlow.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Lawrence Stephens Acting Campus Principal ACG Sunderland

On Monday 2 December the whole of ACG Sunderland will go to Long Bay Reserve for the annual school picnic. We are putting together a fun day for the staff and students to celebrate the year with Inter-House games and tug-of-war, kite flying, swimming and sports activities. We ask that students come to school in mufti. The buses leave school at 8.40am. All students are expected to travel on the buses. Students will arrive back at school by 3.00pm. If the weather is unsuitable students will be in their normal timetabled classes. Students are required to bring morning tea, lunch, water, togs, towel, sun block and a hat. Students should also plan to bring clothing to keep warm during the day if necessary and be prepared for the potential weather elements. Students have the opportunity to swim during the time at Long Bay. Students will be supervised by staff while swimming in the water; please note this is open water. Please return the permission slip to their form teacher by Friday 15 November. The letter and forms will be given to the Lower College students on Monday. Year 11, 12 and 13 students should have had their permission slips etc back to their Form Teachers by now. Please forward if this has not been completed.

Bryan Gao There was a phantom who perished his soul. It burst in flames like a big, black coal. His name was Nole with his big deep hole. He once broke the word with his head all curled. And when he did he smirked and swirled. He laughed and laughed that he almost barfed. He as feared all over and he is a dozer. He makes noise to scare his toe and he would kill them with his wooden hoe. He would blow the wind and he would kill and kill and be amazed at his amazing skill. His fate is near while he ate a car. He likes to stay in his hard, hard way but he will never be dismayed.

Tomas Zou Six times in a fortnight, the ghost of a dreaded knight comes to the door and sweeps the floor. People scream as they leave their house full of dreaded mouse. The mice carried a feared witch who had a little itch. The people all disappeared on a bloody spear. 4

Borneo Trip

ACG Sunderland 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland

In December 2020, a group of 15 College students and 2 teachers will be going to Borneo to participate in a community service trip. The main focus of the trip involves a community project, such as building a bus shelter, a school block, a toilet block or a water well. To participate in such activities, we need to fundraise for the materials used in the construction process. We have thought of many ways in which to fundraise for the community project, such as sausage sizzles, bake sales, selling Eco Store soap, specially designed t-shirts/tote bags and many more that are yet to be announced. Our most consistently available method of donation is our GiveALittle page, and we would very much appreciate any donation given on that page, as it is essential that we raise enough money to provide infrastructure to the developing village that we will be staying with in Borneo. Please have a look at our page. Our team, along with the people in Borneo, will be more than grateful! https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-us-provide-schoolinginfrastructure?fbclid=IwAR2BPmTfiu_j_YaVkEZIo5HpuKKLLQTP7CDwH8s71U5ERQpEzcut9jbguBk Ecostore soaps are available from reception, or one of the Borneo team students, for $2.50. A dollar from each soap will go directly to the community project. Keep an eye out for our next exciting fundraising venture.

Borneo Tote Bag Design Competition Congratulations to Milan Bos, for the winning tote bag design. Thank you to everyone who entered. Discount vouchers will be given out to the top designs once the tote bags are ready. Term Four Charity – NorWest Care Trust In Term Four, the Student Leadership team is supporting the NorWest Care Trust. The NorWest Care Trust works to ensure that everyone in our local community can enjoy the holiday season, by hand making and delivering Christmas hampers for the families who are in need. We are excited about the difference that we could make to our local community through the work of the NorWest Care Trust at this important time of year. For the first part of our service, each of the six Houses will have a section of three Christmas trees displayed on their House wall in the atrium. To decorate the trees, we would like to offer you the opportunity to sponsor an ornament. Each ornament will be decorated with the name of the family that sponsors it, and the ornaments will vary in colour and size depending on the amount donated: blue symbolises a $10 donation, red symbolises a $20 donation, silver symbolises a $30 donation and gold symbolise a donation of $50 or more. Smaller or anonymous donations can be placed in a jar that will be under each tree. You are welcome to take your ornament home at the end of Term Four as a memento. At the end of the year, the House with the most money donated will get a reward. To sponsor an ornament, please fill out the form attached and return it to reception with your donation OR transfer your donation to the ACG Sunderland account: 03 0252 0820953 00. Use your child’s House (McDonald, Tong, Fleming, Whenuapai, Waitakere, or Findlay) as the reference and do not forget to include the name you would like to appear on your decoration. Alongside the Christmas tree decorations, we will also be running a mystery bucket game. The aim for the students is to fill up the House boxes at reception with donations. The Leaders of the box that is the fullest every two weeks will get dunked at lunch time. This fun game will give students the opportunity to donate to a worthy cause. Six donation boxes will be left in the Reception area and labelled with McDonald, Tong, Fleming, Whenuapai, Waitakere, and Findlay. Please place all non-perishable food donations in the box of your choice. Thank you for all your support.

Trophies Please return all cups and trophies from Prizegiving 2018 to Mrs Davies or leave at reception. These all should be back, but we still have some outstanding. Please return by Tuesday 29 October.

Whole School Picnic This is this term. This has already been charged against students accounts in Term Three.

Lost Property Please ensure you name all your child’s items.

Students Photos All students were given their shoot keys so parents could order all their child’s photos on line. Year 11 to Year 13 students need to collect their shoot key from reception. Last day for ordering on-line to get free delivery is Sunday 3 November 2019.
