WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 14, Term Four, Week Four, 08 November 2019 Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland As I write this newsletter today, the Year Four class is at Moto Moana Scout camp, Blockhouse Bay, at their annual class camp. Our Year Seven students are out on a Science trip, visiting the shores of Long Bay with Mrs Barlow and Mrs Tyler. Outdoor Education is a highlight here at ACG Sunderland, which brings me to my next point; the Year Six to Year Eleven camps commence Monday week [25-27 November], I hope the weather is as good for these campers as it has been this week. Students and staff alike, are preparing for their time away. Last night with the Year Seven Transition to College evening with over 100 in attendance. A mix of new parents and students and our current Year Six community experienced an outline of the “Sunderland Way”, how Cambridge works, and how we support your children pastorally. For the College, three speakers from Year Seven give some insight into the life here at Sunderland. The PowerPoint presented on the night is available if required. • Keshalia Nelson, Eric Mironov and Amelia Lee spoke about their experiences moving from Year Six to Year Seven this year.

If the weather is unsuitable students will be in their normal timetabled classes. Students are required to bring morning tea, lunch, water, togs, towel, sun block and a hat. Students should also plan to bring clothing to keep warm during the day if necessary and be prepared for the potential weather elements. Students have the opportunity to swim during the time at Long Bay. Students will be supervised by staff while swimming in the water; please note this is open water. Please return the permission slip to their form teacher by Friday 15 November. The letter and forms will be given to the Lower College students on Monday.

College Cricket Sunderland 1st XI vs Long Bay 2nd XI Saturday 2 November Sunderland won the toss and chose to bowl first, soon having Long Bay in trouble with a wicket in the first over. Some great catching saw wickets fall regularly and Long Bay were bowled out for 84. Suhas Anand with 3 for 10, Tyler Glenn with 2 for 13 and Max Ogden with 2 for 13 the best of the bowlers. Sunderland made short work of the low total smashing the runs in 10.5 overs only losing one wicket, Tom Mun winning the game with a six out of the ground and into the carpark. Aqeel Munif with 30 not out, Shaldrick Adhar with 30 and Tom Mun 19 not out the run scorers.

Year 11, 12 and 13 students should have had their permission slips etc back to their Form Teachers by now. Please forward if this has not been completed. 3

Borneo Trip

In December 2020, a group of 15 College students and 2 teachers will be going to Borneo to participate in a community service trip. The main focus of the trip involves a community project, such as building a bus shelter, a school block, a toilet block or a water well. To participate in such activities, we need to fundraise for the materials used in the construction process. We have thought of many ways in which to fundraise for the community project, such as sausage sizzles, bake sales, selling Eco Store soap, specially designed t-shirts/tote bags and many more that are yet to be announced. Our most consistently available method of donation is our GiveALittle page, and we would very much appreciate any donation given on that page, as it is essential that we raise enough money to provide infrastructure to the developing village that we will be staying with in Borneo. Please have a look at our page. Our team, along with the people in Borneo, will be more than grateful! https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-us-provide-schoolinginfrastructure?fbclid=IwAR2BPmTfiu_j_YaVkEZIo5HpuKKLLQTP7CDwH8s71U5ERQ pEzcut9jbguBk Fundraising

Ecostore soaps are available from reception, or one of the Borneo team students, for $2.50. A dollar from each soap will go directly to the community project. Sausage

Term Four Charity – NorWest Care Trust In Term Four, the Student Leadership team is supporting the NorWest Care Trust. The NorWest Care Trust works to ensure that everyone in our local community can enjoy the holiday season, by hand making and delivering Christmas hampers for the families who are in need. We are excited about the difference that we could make to our local community through the work of the NorWest Care Trust at this important time of year. For the first part of our service, each of the six Houses will have a section of three Christmas trees displayed on their House wall in the atrium. To decorate the trees, we would like to offer you the opportunity to sponsor an ornament. Each ornament will be decorated with the name of the family that sponsors it, and the ornaments will vary in colour and size depending on the amount donated: blue symbolises a $10 donation, red symbolises a $20 donation, silver symbolises a $30 donation and gold symbolise a donation of $50 or more. Smaller or anonymous donations can be placed in a jar that will be under each tree. You are welcome to take your ornament home at the end of Term Four as a memento. At the end of the year, the House with the most money donated will get a reward. To sponsor an ornament, please fill out the form attached and return it to reception with your donation OR transfer your donation to the ACG Sunderland account: 03 0252 0820953 00. Use your child’s House (McDonald, Tong, Fleming, Whenuapai, Waitakere, or Findlay) as the reference and do not forget to include the name you would like to appear on your decoration. Alongside the Christmas tree decorations, we will also be running a mystery bucket game. The aim for the students is to fill up the House boxes at reception with donations. The Leaders of the box that is the fullest every two weeks will get dunked at lunch time. This fun game will give students the opportunity to donate to a worthy cause. Six donation boxes will be left in the Reception area and labelled with McDonald, Tong, Fleming, Whenuapai, Waitakere, and Findlay. Please place all non-perishable food donations in the box of your choice. Thank you for all your support
