ACG SUNDERLAND

WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 14, Term Four, Week Five, 15 November 2019 Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland I have just completed my Yearbook report, which is always a great summary of the year. We really have had a wonderful year. We only have two and a half weeks until we have an opportunity to celebrate our successes at Prizegiving. I look forward to seeing you all there. I am now in a position to announce staffing for 2020. We are farewelling two members of staff. Mrs Susan Sherwen is leaving to spend more time with her family and grandchildren. I personally thank her for all her energy both in the Science Department and Mathematics classroom. Mr Pavel Granger has decided to move back to Mt Roskill Intermediate School, into a management position. I have appreciated his enthusiasm in and out of the classroom, particularly his passion for sport and in getting flipper ball underway again in the Primary School. We will miss both these excellent teachers.

Also, Miss Christiana Fleming has decided to spend a year back in the Philippines, volunteering at a school not far from where her parents live. She will be back in 2021 and we all wish her the very best with her wonderful experience. Therefore, I have employed six new staff to cover staff departures and to teach new classes too. This is a very exciting period for ACG Sunderland. I wish to also highlight the Year Six Graduation dinner held last night. I have included my speech from the evening.

‘Good Evening Parents, Friends and Special Guests of our graduating Year Six Class of 2019. I would like to thank at the outset Mr Granger and his team of helpers for this wonderful event they have put on for you, and to Mrs Chartrand for her assistance too. This will be Mr Granger’s second Year Six graduation, I would like to recognise the contributions he has made to Year Six class and ACG Sunderland in general. I wish to acknowledge our guest speakers, Stephanie Weatherill and Chase Leathard, our Head Girl and Boy, we are all so very proud of these young people. This culture of graduation from Year Six into Year Seven, I believe, is a very important one and marks some significant milestones in your educational journey. It also gives us an opportunity to reflect on your Primary years and on Sunderland. Many of you are part of the school for six years; you have all grown physically but as importantly, you have grown academically, emotionally and socially. The committed staff here at ACG Sunderland have also enjoyed this journey you have been on and share a great deal in the highlights you all have experienced. • • • • • • • • • • •

The quality of teaching and learning The first day of each academic year The special flavour of the Primary assemblies The Prizegivings The Sport The Arts Festivals and Productions Grandparents Day Book Week and the Book Parade The Disco’s The Camps And the upcoming trip to Northland.

You will now be able to add the Year Six Graduation Evening to that list. Moving into Year Seven in 2020 will be exciting and new for you all. Different teachers, classrooms, playing fields, uniform, you even get a locker. This makes it challenging and interesting and a lot of fun too. At Sunderland there is also a lot that is the same, Houses, values, friendships and high expectations. From the experiences of our other graduates moving into the College, I’m completely confident you will have a seamless transition and love the process. Enjoy the rest of this very special evening Year Six and remember don’t forget where you have come from and the wonderful experiences you have all had here at ACG Sunderland Primary.’ Aspire Succeed Respect.’ It really was a fantastic celebration of the children’s time here at school.

KEY:

Traffic flow for ACG Sunderland before and after school is going well with the new changes. However, we do need to respect our business community around our school. We do realise that we cannot control this but blocking driveways, dropping your child in other car parking premises and having your child running across a carpark is not safe for anyone.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

Borneo Trip

In December 2020, a group of 15 College students and 2 teachers will be going to Borneo to participate in a community service trip. The main focus of the trip involves a community project, such as building a bus shelter, a school block, a toilet block or a water well. To participate in such activities, we need to fundraise for the materials used in the construction process. We have thought of many ways in which to fundraise for the community project, such as sausage sizzles, bake sales, selling Eco Store soap, specially designed t-shirts/tote bags and many more that are yet to be announced. Our most consistently available method of donation is our GiveALittle page, and we would very much appreciate any donation given on that page, as it is essential that we raise enough money to provide infrastructure to the developing village that we will be staying with in Borneo. Please have a look at our page. Our team, along with the people in Borneo, will be more than grateful! https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-us-provide-schoolinginfrastructure?fbclid=IwAR2BPmTfiu_j_YaVkEZIo5HpuKKLLQTP7CDwH8s71U5ERQ pEzcut9jbguBk Fundraising

Ecostore soaps are available from reception, or one of the Borneo team students, for $2.50. A dollar from each soap will go directly to the community project. Sausage

Term Four Charity – NorWest Care Trust In Term Four, the Student Leadership team is supporting the NorWest Care Trust. The NorWest Care Trust works to ensure that everyone in our local community can enjoy the holiday season, by hand making and delivering Christmas hampers for the families who are in need. We are excited about the difference that we could make to our local community through the work of the NorWest Care Trust at this important time of year.

Alongside the Christmas tree decorations, we will also be running a mystery bucket game. The aim for the students is to fill up the House boxes at reception with donations. The Leaders of the box that is the fullest every two weeks will get dunked at lunch time. This fun game will give students the opportunity to donate to a worthy cause. Six donation boxes will be left in the Reception area and labelled with McDonald, Tong, Fleming, Whenuapai, Waitakere, and Findlay. Please place all non-perishable food donations in the box of your choice. Thank you for all your support
