ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 13, Term Two, Week Five, 31 May 2019
Dear ACG Sunderland Community What a wonderful Grandparents and Special Friends Day we had today. A real celebration of the values ACG Sunderland was built upon.
What’s in this issue:
Grandparents in 2019 play more of a part of their families lives than ever before. Many cultures globally have always had developed, extended family groups and we certainly see many of these characteristics now present in our West Auckland families too. Grandparents are doing the pickups, drop offs, attending sporting events, assisting our class trips and some even assist with fees. The children, families and the ACG community acknowledge the contribution the extended family are making in the education of our current young people here at Sunderland. I wish to share the speech I gave at this morning’s Special Assembly where all the Primary classes performed in front of our guests.

Good morning and a huge welcome to our thirteenth Annual Grandparents and Special Friends Day here at ACG Sunderland. Grandparents Day is one of our very special days of our year and I know the children have been so looking forward to you all attending our school here at Sunderland this morning. We all know that one of the greatest things children can have in their lives is a grandparent. I thought I would start with a little story: Like most of us here, my Grandparents had a real impact on my life. Perhaps my siblings and I were more fortunate than most, as my Grandparents actually lived with us on the same property while we grew up (not sure what my parents thought about it all) but as children we had a fantastic time. What it meant was we had adult support 24/7 - on all school trips, to all sport games, on tramping trips, making trolleys and perhaps the one very strong memory I have is the support my Pop gave me with homework. He was an avid reader. He was like Google before the internet. If there was a problem then we would always ask Pop. He had the time and the patience to support us in all that we did. Unfortunately, my Grandparents are no longer with us but the impact that they had has made long lasting impressions on mine and my siblings lives. Therefore, you will not find a greater supporter of Grandparents and Special Friends Day then me. An opportunity/a window into the lives of your grandchildren or special friend here at school. It is my absolute pleasure to host you all here at Sunderland on this very special day. I know all these wonderful young people have been practicing a great deal for you all, so let’s get the day underway.
