ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER
Vol 14, Term Three, Week One, 26 July 2019
Dear ACG Sunderland Community I hope like me, you had some quality time with your family and friends over the three week break. I did hear many had escaped the wet, cold winter and headed off for some sun, well done to you! What’s in this issue:
The school is in great spirits and with us now having formally joined the Inspired group of schools. I am now in a position to share with you some of the plans we have in place for ACG Sunderland over the next year or so. 1. A new purpose built Preschool is going to start construction later this year, with a capacity of 70 children.
ACG Sunderland 0800 222 199 | 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland
2. A café is to be built in the Atrium this year. 3. A new turf is to be constructed below the Gymnasium, this will be an all-weather space to play Tennis, Soccer, Hockey, and to do have timetabled Physical Education classes. 4. There are also plans to put astro surface down on our existing hard surfaces in the College These are obviously very exciting times for Sunderland and I will certainly keep you up to date with progress. Due to Sunderland’s growth in recent years, we have decided to expand the number of Houses from four to six. The two new Houses are called Waitakere and Whenuapai. Waitakere will be orange and Whenuapai teal. With this growth it will mean that some current students will need to change Houses. We will let students know how this process will work. During the holidays a group of students travelled to South Africa, an article is included in this newsletter however, I wish to share the words from Mrs Barlow describing how well the trip went. I cannot believe that it is now all over! I would just like to say what a great trip this was and how well looked after by the company we were. The staff went out of their way to make us all feel at home and even provided us Operation Wallacea with many extra’s.
Back Row: Leo Li, Aaran Kumar, Jack Feng, Niket Shah, David Li and Mr O’Connor Front Row: Mrs Pollock’s Sister, Robson Smith, Ms Pollock (visiting the team), Mrs Barlow and Rufang Luo
Also in the holidays, Eesha Ranchhod competed in the National Karate Championships, winning gold in her class: Kata Female 12/13 years premier division. Well done Eesha. To add to this, Flynn Jameson won silver for his 5 metre platform dive, gold for his 3 metre and 1 metre springboard dives along with gold and bronze in the Syncro competition the boys and mixed teams he is a part of. Well done Flynn.

On Tuesday 23 June, Sunderland was again the home of ‘Rock’ when twelve bands entertained an audience of nearly three hundred which included parents, students and staff at our annual Battle of the Bands. It really was a wonderfully entertaining afternoon and a celebration of the music ethos that Mr Daniel O’Connor has been able to develop and sustain for more than a decade. This year the judges were the Head Boy and Head Girl, Chase Leathard and Stephanie Weatherill, a very big thank you to them. The results: Talented Musician: Max Kingston Best Original Song: Moon Children Third Place: 5 Minute Band Second Place: Hex First Place: Moon Children
South Africa Trip 26 June to 14 July 2019 What a wonderful experience we all had. The company really looked after us all. The first week we completed our terrestrial activities at Dinokeng Reserve. We went out early each morning to look for organisms and complete surveys to assist with the development and maintenance of this unique reserve.

Our water based snorkelling and scuba diving was based in the Sodwana wetlands. This was a more relaxed week with plenty of time to make new friends and enjoy being on the beach.
Teresa Barlow Faculty Co-Ordinator Youth Parliament
Youth Parliament was an initiative set in place to ensure that young people had a voice in Parliament by working closely with the MPs that selected them. I had the opportunity to represent the Hon Phil Twyford (or as I like to call him Uncle Phil), share his seat in the debating chamber and attend events with him which allowed me to form connections with people and organisations he works with . He has taught me how to overcome the nerves of being in the public eye and how to be myself. I saw how passionate he was and how much he loved people. He saw something in me that I will probably never see, but I'm grateful that he did because this entire experience has been amazing and he is absolutely awesome. The two day event took months of preparation, gathering information from not only the young people in my peer group, but also my electorate on what issues they wanted to be addressed. The common issue that I found was that young people were concerned for the future of their culture and that if action was not taken to preserve it, then we would become the "lost generation." Hence why this became the topic of my speech in the general debate. I was also on the Primary production select committee where we had representatives come and talk to us about the effect that climate change is having on farming.

I got the chance to meet various MP's more notably Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern, Rt Hon Trevor Mallard and Dame Patsy Reddy just to name a few. Meeting these people, people I look up to, was nothing short of a privilege. Having real, down to earth conversations with young people who share such an immense love for politics with me, made me feel at home, as I am aware that joining a political party at the age of 17 is not common. But I would have to say the best part of this entire experience was talking to everyday people. letting them know that i heard them, and that I cared for them and their opinions. People want to feel included and feel like someone is looking out for them. not like a number or a demographic. So they tell you things, and many of these things are heart-breaking. But that's just a part of the job, and so I've learnt that you need to keep pushing so that meaningful change can be created to ensure that these people can live a life worth living.
I loved every bit of the experience, making new friends and meeting future potential colleagues. The greatest minds of the future sat in that chamber alongside me, and I am proud to say that the future of our country looks bright. The goal for me personally is to get back into Parliament as a member of the House. Roaming the halls was nothing short of inspiring. All 120 youth MPs were asked what mattered most to them, and my answer was exactly the same as theirs. He tangata, he tangata he tangata, it is people, it is people, it is people.
