On Wednesday, the School undertook its annual earthquake drill and most students were very quick to get under the desk and hold on. Drop – Cover – Hold The best were our Preschool students who were outside enjoying the sunshine when I arrived and declared there was an ‘earthquake’. Straight away their teachers said ‘turtle’ about fifteen little children got into the middle of the playground and made little turtle slopes covering their heads. We were super impressed! Conversations in the staffroom this week did question the need for an earthquake drill in Auckland – being a long way from a Faultline, but the geologist in me could not resist to ask them how sixty eight volcanic cones had appeared in the Auckland isthmus, assuring them that when an eruption occurs, there will be earthquakes.
