ACG SUNDERLAND
WINGS NEWSLETTER Vol 14, Term Three, Week Nine, 20 September 2019 Dear Parents and Friends of Sunderland
What’s in this issue:
On Monday morning over one hundred parents and students enjoyed each other’s company and experienced a wonderful speaker, Alexia Hilbertidou, at the annual College Parents and Friends Breakfast. Alexia is 20-years-old, just recently finished high-school, yet her love of Women’s empowerment and STEM (Science, Technology Engineering, and Math) has led her to a level of influence well beyond her years. She established GirlBoss New Zealand, an organisation which encourages young women to embrace STEM, Entrepreneurship and higher leadership. In 3 years, GirlBoss has 12,000 members and its programmes have been implemented in 55 schools across New Zealand, Australia and the Cook Islands.
Alexia’s own mission is to get women to the table - the boardroom table that is, and she believes the decisions made while young are crucial in paving the way.
As a National finalist for the Eureka Science Competition, at 17, she was the youngest person to lead a research project at the New Zealand Treasury. At 18, she was selected by the US Embassy and NASA for the NASA SOFIA Southern Deployment. She is New Zealand’s first Eisenhower Youth Fellow and has represented New Zealand at the International Future of Work Summit and the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. Alexia’s passion for gender equity is why she was named a Top 30 Global Teen Leader, a Top 5 Young Leader by the New Zealand Government, The Most Creative in Education at the Idealog Creative Awards, and the most influential New Zealand woman under the age of 25 at the Westpac Women of Influence Awards.

In 2018, Alexia was personally awarded a Queen's Young Leader Award for Services to the Commonwealth by Her Majesty, The Queen at Buckingham Palace. She was selected from over 20,000 nominations and is the youngest Commonwealth Citizen to hold this honour. Alexia was a fabulous speaker and the entire audience enjoyed her message. On Tuesday, the Primary school also enjoyed the same excellent breakfast, and then experienced an entertaining question and answer format by up and coming Silver Fern, Michaela Sokolich-Beatson. Following a breakthrough year in 2016, talented young defender Michaela Sokolich-Beatson has continued to enhance her credentials in leaps and bounds. Named for the first time in 2018, the talented 22-year old is an example of the next generation of Silver Fern ready to create a legacy of their own in the black dress. A product of Whangaparoa College, Sokolich-Beatson was first chosen for the Northern Mystics in 2016 and is where she has remained for the last four seasons. An impressive 2019 season saw her efforts recognised with inclusion in the wider Netball World Cup programme. An outstanding athlete, Sokolich-Beatson is a tireless and effective defender. Skilled both in the circle and out on wing defence, she offers versatility and a fierce determination for the ball. Her strong leadership skills held her in good stead as the captain of the triumphant NZU21 team at the Netball World Youth Cup in Botswana in 2017. Fresh off their championship at the Netball World Cup last month, she’s looking forward to sharing her thoughts with your students about goal setting and how it’s taken her (and the Ferns) to the pinnacle of international netball sport. Michaela was able to pitch and entertain the audience superbly. Everyone really enjoyed her honesty and message.

Then in the afternoon of both Monday and Tuesday ACG Sunderland held their annual Talent Shows. Firstly, on Monday the College, and then the Primary on Tuesday. Both events were outstanding with student, staff and parents alike loving the entertainment. Perhaps what is so refreshing is the confidence of the performers and respect of the audience that just encapsulates the Sunderland Way. I personally was so very proud of everyone. Congratulations to the following students: Primary • Frist: Ray Chung – Magic Show • Second: Fabian Villars – Guitar and singing • Third: Dong Chen – Dance performance College: • First: Martin Li – Rap • Second: Cassandra Pauling-Munro and Erin Geraghty - Singing • Third: Doyul Ki - Singing A huge thank you to the judges, backstage crew and everyone who made these two events happen. A big thank you to Mr O’Connor too, for his leadership in this area.
Then on Thursday, over twenty of our performers travelled to the Vodafone Events centre in South Auckland to be part of the ACG Concert held biannually to celebrate our music and performance skills across all four New Zealand schools. It really was a fabulous evening and again, congratulations to Mr Daniel O’Connor for his passion here.
Aspire. Succeed. Respect.

World of Mathematics Session On Monday we were very lucky to have World of Maths visit our school. They had set up some fantastic hands-on maths activities that challenged us. We had lots of fun and learnt a lot at the same time. The problem solving activities really made us think about how maths is all around us. Have a look at our fantastic photos:

Borneo Trip
ACG Sunderland 0800 222 199 | 09 838 7070 6 Waipareira Ave, Henderson, Auckland
In December 2020, a group of 15 college students and 2 teachers will be going to Borneo to participate in a community service trip. The main focus of the trip involves a community project, such as building a bus shelter, a school block, a toilet block or a water well. To participate in such activities, we need to fundraise for the materials used in the construction process. We have thought of many ways in which to fundraise for the community project, such as sausage sizzles, bake sales, selling Eco Store soap, specially designed t-shirts/tote bags and many more that are yet to be announced. Our most consistently available method of donation is our GiveALittle page, and we would very much appreciate any donation given on that page, as it is essential that we raise enough money to provide infrastructure to the developing village that we will be staying with in Borneo. Please have a look at our page. Our team, along with the people in Borneo, will be more than grateful! https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-us-provide-schoolinginfrastructure?fbclid=IwAR2BPmTfiu_j_YaVkEZIo5HpuKKLLQTP7CDwH8s71U5ERQpEzcut9jbguBk Ecostore soaps are available from receptions, or one of the Borneo team students, for $2.50. A dollar from each soap will go directly to the community project. Keep an eye out for our next exciting fundraising venture.

ACG University Advice Link
The ACG University Advice link has been live for 2 and a half months, and it is great to see ACG students and parents from all our schools use it. We have users from year 10 right up to Year 13’s using the link. The link is located on your MYACG Page and is called ACG University Advice. ACG University Advice now links to 31 pages of information and sites that we hope will provide information and confidence to students planning their post ACG life. In August we added 8 new pages, one for each of New Zealand’s Universities. Another page that has been updated is the Parents page. We have added a link to a resource AUT have created, ‘Parents Hub”, and it is helpful to parents of students leaving home and going to University. Making the best choice relies on having the best information, and that is one of the main reasons we have introduced the University Advice link. The ACG University Advice link is not a stagnant database, it is an evolving resource aimed at giving our students and their parents access to important information that can help them make one of the biggest decisions they have faced so far, choosing the degree and university that is the best fit for them. The most popular pages used so far are: 1) Personal Statement 2) NZ Universities 3) Australian Universities 4) Asia/Pacific 5) US Universities 6) Scholarship Information 7) Otago University 8) Auckland University 9) UK Universities 10) Parents Page. If there is a page you think we should add, please feel free to email your suggestion to me: Guy.mills@acgedu.com It will help us work out what we may wish to add next.
