Recently, we had the privilege of witnessing the incredible talent of our Year 13 Visual Arts students during the DP Art Exhibition held on March 19th. This showcase represented the culmination of two years of immersive learning and artistic exploration, where students like Deandra, Dima, Sarrah, Zara, and their peers, brought their personal narratives and cultural heritage to life through their art.

DP Art Exhibition from Year 13 Visual Art Students

Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, including the profound works of renowned artists and their own unique backgrounds, our students created a mesmerizing exhibition that spoke volumes of their journey, creativity, and the depth of their connection to the world around them. The success of this exhibition is a testament to the unwavering support of our community and the resilience and passion of our students. It is a reflection of what ACG School Jakarta stands for - fostering creativity, innovation, and problem-solving through dynamic learning experiences. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the artists and express our deepest appreciation to everyone who has supported them on this remarkable journey.

IB Evaluation Visit

Adding to our reasons to celebrate, we recently concluded a significant chapter in our school's ongoing story of growth and self-improvement with the successful completion of the IB Evaluation visit. This intensive review, encompassing both the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP), offered us invaluable insights into our practices, highlighting our strengths and identifying opportunities for further enhancement.

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE PRINCIPAL & PYP COORDINATOR

Dear Parents, Caregivers, and Students,

The month of March saw us completing an important milestone in our school’s journey towards becoming a better IB World School. On the last three days of Term 3, we hosted a PYP-DP Evaluation Visit Team, composed of IB educators (2 PYP teachers and 2 DP teachers from other IB schools), trained according to global IB policies and are members of the IB educator network.

The visit team reviewed our documents and completed an evaluation visit:

Engaged our school community in reflective conversations about ongoing programme development, by meeting with teachers, school leaders, students, parents, and two members of our governing body,

Asked us to share our self-study process, reflections and transferable learning,

Assessed the development of each standard by visiting classes and viewing the school facilities, in addition to the meetings, Identified requirements that are not in place, and, Supported the school in applying and transferring our learning on the programme development process areas for future or further programme development.

The visit was an opportunity for the evaluation team to:

Understand and discuss with our school leadership and other members of the school community the development of the IB programme(s) in the school

Provide feedback to our school to inform its future programme development efforts, and,

Verify that the implementation of the programme(s) in the school meets IB requirements.

The aim of the visit is to provide meaningful feedback on programme development, as well as to note areas where programme requirements are not in place. The process does not appraise or assess individual teachers or school leaders. We were pleased with the positive oral feedback and feedforward given by the visit team at the conclusion of the visit, and look forward to receiving the written report from the IB before the end of May. It will boost our efforts to improve learning in our school

This external evaluation, which began in September 2023, complimented our school’s self-study which began in October 2022. Our motto for the process was that we are:

A community of compassionate and entrepreneurial learners

Inspired by IB programmes, we reviewed how

We foster young people as “agents of change”, and how we inspire learners, as global citizens, to make a difference and contribute to society. We aimed to promote the importance of “principled action”: making responsible choices and exploring the ethical dimension of decisions to act or not to act.

At our school, students are encouraged to explore global and local issues in ways that empower them to be beyond just aware: we engage our students in thinking, planning, acting, and reflecting collaboratively about issues. They are encouraged to explore their own agency what they themselves can do to make the change the world needs.

Both self-study and external evaluation processes included gathering feedback from students, parents, teachers and support staff It is clear from numerous surveys and meetings conducted as part of those processes, that several opportunities for growth and development exist for ACG School Jakarta

There are certain areas that we need further build upon to grow our successes and achievement as a school. However, one thing is very clear: Our school community members feel proud, confident, and most importantly, valued at ACG School Jakarta, and reflect the same in their behaviour towards others.

Schools are all about supporting students to achieve, and ACG School Jakarta’s work is not done until every student is experiencing success, in every class, every day. We want our students to succeed in every area. Most importantly, we want them to succeed in being proud, confident, respected and respectful members of the society. We want them to own their power to make a positive change in their own life and in the world. Our students may or may not be able to move mountains, but pride, confidence and respect will give them a solid basis for future success for themselves, and for the world.

This IB Evaluation helped us get a deeper understanding of what we are doing well, and what we need to change, to ensure we are truly “ a community of compassionate and entrepreneurial learners”. Many thanks to our school community for being active participants in the process.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

At the end of February, our Dance and Drama teacher Brenda Septiasari, Primary Teaching Assistant Lia Pardede and Kindergarten Teaching Assistant Ria Agustina, participated in a virtual PYP workshop titled Making the PYP Happen: Implementing Agency.

In March, Primary Teaching Assistant Monica Gulo completed an online workshop with the same title. This meant that even our newest teacher has received official IB training

Four other staff members, Primary Art Teacher Rahmad Wibowo, Music Teacher Shinta Valentine, Kindergarten Teaching Assistant Ria Agustina and Kindergarten Special Teaching Assistant Hanifah Neneng participated in job-alike sessions organized by IB Dunia Network in Indonesia at the beginning of March. Ms Ria’s reflection on this professional development event was published in the on the IB Dunia blog: https://pypduniablog.wordpress.com/category/acg-school-jakarta/

Referring to the words of the founder of Reggio Emilia educational philosophy, Loris Malaguzzi, who said there are three teachers of children adults, other children and their physical environment, Ms Ria wrote:

As teachers, we should not underestimate the power of the physical environment you create. Even small details can have a significant impact on learning. The key is creating diverse spaces for active, meaningful, joyful learning through play and exploration. The environment is the teacher!

In the last week of March, our Primary Vice Principal and PYP Coordinator Selda Mansur completed a Behaviour Support workshop on person-centred, verbal and non-verbal anxiety de-escalation skills and positive behaviour strategies, to develop a better understanding of behaviour, support children and young people, and respond to their behaviour in a way that is reasonable, proportionate, necessary and respectful

Our staff-only in-school professional development day on 15 April, the day before Term 4 begins, will see our teachers sharing their new learning with colleagues.

Essential Agreements

In the words of a young child,

Essential agreements are like rules and wishes, but they are better than rules because everyone has to agree to do them Rules are things that adults tell you to do, like keep your words nice. Wishes are things you really want to do, like eat chocolate at school. But essential agreements are good to have because it helps you remember how to look after each other and keep everyone learning. Maybe if adults had essential agreements they would learn more and not do all the fighting on the news (Anonymous)

As in many PYP Schools, at ACG School Jakarta, Classroom Essential Agreements are a class consensus that guide behavioural and learning expectations throughout the year, which,

Refer to how something is done, and are, Few in number (realistic and achievable)

Concisely written “We ... ” , Binding on all participants, Agreed to by all participants, and, Reviewed as needed

Throughout February and March, our Primary Student Council members led their classmates to review our existing school bus rules, and we now have an ACG School Jakarta School Bus Essential Agreement, negotiated and agreed on by our StuCo and Transport Team, and announced to the Student Community during a weekly Assembly

MESSAGE FROM IB DIPLOMA COORDINATOR

Dear Caregivers and Students,

I hope this message finds you well and I wish all families celebrating Easter and Eid a wonderful holiday and celebration.

Year 12 Update

Our Year 12 IBDP students have finished their first 3 terms in the IB program and are having a welldeserved break! Just a reminder for those doing Kings Interhigh or Pamoja courses, please check their holiday dates as they are different with ours and keep up with your tasks. The Year 12s have made good progress in their Extended Essays. They should all have a supervisor and be working on developing their Research Question. After this, they will start their research to build their knowledge of the topic before starting their writing

It is important for everyone to stay on track, as completing this on time will reduce the pressure of the academic year ahead. Please ensure that everyone is keeping up their attendance and punctuality, as this is a significant factor in academic success.

Year 13 Update

It is the busiest and most demanding time for the Year 13 students of their IB program. The IB exams are not far away, beginning on April the 24th. The students have just completed their Mock Exams, so it’s extremely important for them to take the feedback from the exams and target their study accordingly.

Most of the Internal Assessments have been completed and uploaded, therefore students should be spending their remaining time preparing for their examinations. Thankfully, DP teachers have been working tirelessly, including after school and on weekends to support the students and I applaud them for their dedication.

Please check my email to all parents and students, sent via Managebac with the examination schedule and guidance. Below are a few tips for their study leave.

Exam Preparation

Study leave is an important time to revise and to practice any areas of improvement. Use the guidance from your teachers and feedback from Mock Examinations and Summatives.

Remember that you have many resources in order to practice and prepare. Make use of Kognity, InThinking, Questionbank, Quizlet and your textbooks. If you require outside assistance such as tutors, please let us know and we may have some contact numbers for you.

Remember that school is open to you after the break, even while on study leave. If you are more focused at school, you are welcome to attend and study in the library or study room. Your teachers should be available during your lesson times to provide support if required, so please ask them.

This is a stressful time, so please reach out to your advisory teacher, Mr. Wilson or me if you require any support.

Be as prepared as you can be :)

I’m confident that the students will work diligently over the break and their study leave and make us all proud. They are not required at school at this time, however, if they feel more productive at school, they are most welcome to attend.

Keep up the fantastic efforts everyone. The finish line is not far away!

COFFEE MORNING

Thursday, 7 March 2024, marked another successful and engaging monthly parent meeting at ACG School Jakarta, where parents were updated on school agendas and had the opportunity to participate in a special painting workshop. What made this workshop truly remarkable was the enthusiastic participation of dads, adding a unique and memorable element to the event.

The painting workshop was a hit among parents, who eagerly embraced their creative sides and produced stunning artworks. It was a heartwarming sight to see parents, both moms and dads, fully engaged in the artistic process and enjoying every moment of it. Many parents discovered hidden talents for painting, showcasing a wide range of styles and expressions.

The workshop not only provided a fun and relaxing activity but also strengthened the bond between parents and the school community. Parents were delighted to be able to bring their paintings home, proudly displaying their creations to their families. The positive feedback and excitement from the parents highlighted the success of the workshop and left everyone looking forward to future creative endeavors.

PI DAY

CELEBRATION!

What great fun we had on March 14! Our entire school was part of the international mathematics Pi Day celebration, which occurs every year on Thursday, March 14 since 3/14 correlates to the first three digits (3.14…) of pi, a beautiful number with infinite digits.

Leading up to Pi Day, year levels were competing against each other trying to make the longest Pi Paper Chain. During our special Pi Day assembly, Year 4 took home a delicious Pi Apple Pie for creating a paper chain that is almost 50 meters long!

Jeong-Hyeop Lee in Year 8 won a Pi Apple Pie as well for reciting an astounding 121 digits of Pi from memory!

Our youngest students in Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 showcased their amazing Pi related artworks and Y12 performed with great enthusiasm the song ‘Oh Number Pi’. We ended Pi Day with a math house competition, where students from all four houses had to answer challenging math questions in Kahoot.

MATH WORKSHOP

On March 4, 2024,

Our Y12 students received a visit from Professor Jeff Anderson and Amy Lin from the University of Waterloo in Canada. They are a part of the Centre for Mathematics and Computing (CEMC), the largest Mathematics and Computer Science outreach organization in North America. During a two hour long session, the students participated in an interactive math workshop. The workshop challenged our students to think critically and creatively as they stretched their mathematics muscles in the classroom.

In a group setting, Professor Jeff lead the students through a variety of math problems with tips and tricks for how best to approach them. He described free resources for students to enrich their math knowledge and explained why math education is so important in today’s global economy. Afterwards, Amy informed our students about the University of Waterloo and answered questions about life after high school. Overall, it was a very successful visit!

The school assembly on March 19, 2024, was a vibrant and lively affair, filled with excitement and celebration. The assembly began with the announcement of the winners of several competitions held during Literacy Week The winners of the Harry Potter Quiz, Story Buddies Maker, Fresh Fairy Tales, and Creative Writing competition were announced, showcasing the creativity and talent of the students.

Following the winner announcements, the assembly was treated to a series of delightful performances from students. The Kindergarten students stole the show with their adorable performance of the classic tale, "The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf " Year 1 students showcased their dancing skills, while Year 2 students charmed the audience with their rendition of popular songs like "Balonku Ada Lima" and "Burung Hantu." Year 3 students also impressed with their musical drama performance, captivating the audience with their talent and enthusiasm.

In addition to the performances, there was an announcement about a preloved thrift sale for donation, with all profits going to the Mirfad Islamic Center Foundation. The sale, scheduled to take place from April 16 to May 10, aims to raise funds for a worthy cause while promoting sustainability and community engagement
