The ARC Board Members Have you ever wondered who leads ARC? In this edition of the newsletter, you can get to know the ARC Board. You can also learn how to get involved.
Dorene Petersen ARC Chair Dorene Petersen has served as Chair of the Aromatherapy Registration Council (ARC) since 1999. As Chair, Dorene helps to ensure minimum standards of training and safety knowledge of registered aromatherapists. Dorene holds a BA in Archaeology and Anthropology from Otago University, New Zealand, a Diploma in Natural Therapeutics from the South Pacific College of Natural Therapies in Auckland, New Zealand, and is a certified acupuncturist with specialized training in Chinese herbal medicine and moxibustion. Dorene is President and Founder of the American College of Healthcare Sciences. Founded in 1978 in New Zealand, it later opened additional branches in Australia and Hong Kong. Today, though, ACHS is housed entirely on the U.S. campus located in Portland, Oregon. In addition to her work as President of the College, Dorene also teaches courses for ACHS and leads the annual ACHS Summer School study-abroad programs to Greece, which explore holistic health, Mediterranean nutrition, and aromatherapy distillation, among other topics. She
is an eCollege certified online instructor and is a faculty member meeting the qualifications prescribed by the Oregon Office of Degree authorization. She stays abreast of current methodologies through various trainings with the Distance Education Training Council and by regularly attending conferences about online learning, including the CITE conferences in Denver in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Dorene regularly lectures about medical herbalism, aromatherapy, and iridology, including appearances at: The South Pacific College of Natural Therapies (NZ), the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) and the Aesthetics Institute, both in Portland, Oregon, and at the Birthingway School of Midwifery in Oregon. In addition, Dorene has appeared on various TV and radio shows, including Good Morning Oregon and the National Radio Show Voice of America, and has presented papers at: The Herb Growers and Marketers Conference in Hyannis, Massachusetts; at the International Scientific Aromatherapy Symposium in Grasse, France; and at the International Herb Association Conference in Portland, Oregon. Her articles about aromatherapy have appeared in publications worldwide, including: Alternative Therapies in Clinical Practice, The News Quarterly, Making Scents, The Herbarist, and on Blogcritics.org. Mynou de Mey ARC Board Director Mynou de Mey (owner of Les Herbes, LTD) has a Master’s Degree in Medicinal Herbology, an International Certification in Aromatherapy, and is a Certified Educator in the field of Aromatherapy. Her extensive training in Aromatherapy and Herbology has greatly contributed to her excellent professional profile. Director of the American Institute for Aromatherapy and Herbal Studies, Mynou offers both correspondence and live certificate courses. She teaches Aromatherapy worldwide, has appeared on television, and contributes to news articles for health-oriented publications. Mynou has served as Vice-President of NAHA (National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy), an association concerned with the education and ethics of aromatherapy in the United States, and previously served on the Educational Committee and the Ethics Committee. Mynou is a co-founder, and actively serving as a Board Director for ARC (Aromatherapy Registration Council,) a non-profit organization involved in promoting education in the field of Aromatherapy. Mynou was selected by the US-AID program in Washington, to be sent to Russia to teach Cosmetologists and Doctors about the practice of aromatherapy and the business of aromatherapy in the American context. There, she introduced to those professionals many essential oils that were unknown or/and unavailable to them. Mynou worked as a consultant for a well-known National Football League, making blends specifically designed for athletes, their success, self-confidence, and the locker room! She served as a consultant for some known Cosmetic product designers and reviewed the accuracy of their marketing lingo, medical claims, and safety use. She is proud to have many students in the US and in Japan, who, under her guidance, have started their own Aromatherapy business, or teachings. She has had several celebrities learning with her and continues to seek students that want to spread the word about Aromatherapy responsibly. Today, she still sells essential oils and teaches Aromatherapy, but is also involved in many different projects and other businesses: making mosaics, handpainted clothing, and ethnic jewelry, owning a store called Gopooja (Praying to the Sacred Cow), living alone in the Catskills, New York, missing her old Aromatherapy friends...but finding them now on Facebook. Her favorite saying is, “May all your steps be scented.�

Lori L. Barr ARC Board Director Lori L. Barr, M. D. is an internationally recognized health and wellness expert and practicing partner radiologist with ARA Imaging in Austin, Texas. She helps physicians and patients decide on safe, effective imaging studies that support the patient's wellness. In her radiology practice she performs and interprets those studies. The American College of Radiology bestowed her the honor of Fellow on September 11, 2001 for clinical, teaching and research excellence in the field of diagnostic imaging. She has published 35 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 11 book chapters, and the Handbook of Pediatric Imaging to date. Lori began the study of biology at 16 in Nashville, Tennessee at Lipscomb University. Environmental Biology taught her the skills of the field biologist. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and a Chemistry Minor. Even though she pursued a career as a medical doctor, she continues to support sustainable family farming in the southern United States and in tropical locales worldwide. Global study of the relationships between plants and animals set the stage for interest in aromatherapy. In her second year at Louisiana State University School of Medicine at Shreveport, Lori realized that not everything she was learning in medical school was true. She called her mother, a career speech pathologist who had worked with thousands of stroke patients to help them speak again, and told her what she learned in neuroanatomy class. Lori said, "If you have a stroke that affects Broca's speech area, you will never speak again." Lee Barr, her mother, laughed. Lori was puzzled. "Lori, you know that is not true. Look at all of the patients I treated in New Orleans who had strokes affecting Broca's area that learned to speak again. Not everything you are going to learn in medical school is true! You rarely know what capacity a person has to heal until you really start working with them." At that point, Lori resolved to be open to all methods of integrative healing and to teach individuals how to safely take care of themselves. Lori was formally introduced to Aromatherapy in 2001. She became a Registered Aromatherapist in 2005 and came on the ARC Board in 2007, where she provides a medical perspective. Lori is a frequent aromacouncil tweeter. She is an active advocate for KISS (keep it safe and simple) when it comes to healing. She encourages individuals to just say "no" to synthetics when a naturally occurring substance or change in habits will do the same or a better job. Lori and her business partners formed the Texas Aromatherapy Institute in Austin, Texas in 2007. They focus on teaching individuals to safely use essential oils to bolster health and vitality. Specifically, they work to educate consumers about oil quality, safe handling and prudent administration. Lori continues to educate individuals inside and outside of medicine about taking responsibility for all aspects of their being. She teaches individuals to declare their health freedom and decide which integrative health specialists will best serve them on their wellness team. How you can get involved There are many ways you can get involved with ARC activities. One of the easiest ways is by writing test questions for an upcoming ARC examination. You may also participate in an ARC item review session to review potential test questions. In addition, you may write articles for the ARC Newsletter.
