BOSTON POPS ON NANTUCKET 2017

Nantucket Island Resorts, Jill & Stephen Karp

Message from the President Margot Hartmann, MD, PhD

Greetings and welcome to Jetties Beach! Thank you for joining us at the 21st annual Boston Pops on Nantucket concert to benefit Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Over the past two decades, this event has evolved to become an indispensible source of support that allows us to remain an improbable amount of hospital on a remote island, 30 miles out to sea. It is our largest and most important fundraiser, and is critical to our ability to care for island patients around the clock, 365 days a year. This evening gives us an opportunity to acknowledge the incredible relationship Nantucket Cottage Hospital has forged with the island community over the years, one of mutual support and commitment. While we share many of the same challenges facing all small, rural hospitals across the country, we have something in our corner that most of our counterparts could only dream of: an incredibly generous community of year-round and seasonal residents who share their time, talent, and treasure with us year after year. The Pops is the embodiment of that commitment, and an evening I look forward every summer – looking out on the faces of 7,000-plus steadfast supporters from the stage is an incomparable privilege! This year’s concert is taking place during a momentous time for Nantucket Cottage Hospital. We have just broken ground for our new facility, a dynamic new hospital for the island that will serve Nantucketers for the next 50 years and beyond. Many of you have generously donated to our campaign. But it is your presence here tonight that supports our day-to-day operations and will allow us to sustain our talented staff, critical programs and services, and culture of compassion in our new building when it opens. On behalf of everyone at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, thank you. Sincerely,

Margot Hartmann, MD, PhD President & CEO, Nantucket Cottage Hospital

Message from the Chairs Mary Jane & Glenn Creamer

Welcome to the 2017 Boston Pops on Nantucket concert! We have a spectacular evening of entertainment planned for you tonight, yet it is important to pause and remember that this event is an opportunity to celebrate our community hospital and everything it does to support life as we know it on the island. Our health and wellness, especially in a remote location like Nantucket, should never be taken for granted. Your presence here tonight helps sustain Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s commitment to its patients and the critical role it plays as the safety net for our community. The Boston Pops on Nantucket also represents the one summer gathering that brings the island population together in a way that no other event can do. What other concert can boast the breathtaking backdrop of Jetties Beach paired with a group of musicians known affectionately as “America’s Orchestra”? The Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra has set an incredible standard of excellence both regionally and across the nation, and conductor Keith Lockhart is in his 23rd season leading this musical institution. They will be joined this evening by our special musical guest, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, The Beach Boys. We are honored to serve as chairs of the 2017 edition of the Boston Pops on Nantucket and help steward this island summer tradition, now in its 21st year. We also want to recognize our co-chairs Laurie and Bob Monahan and the hundreds of volunteers who are the key to making this event such a success year after year, as well as the support of our major underwriters, including presenting sponsors Jill and Stephen Karp, and Fidelity Investments. Thank you for joining us tonight, and please enjoy the 21st Boston Pops on Nantucket! Sincerely,

Mary Jane & Glenn Creamer Chairs, 2017 Boston Pops on Nantucket

Keith Lockhart, Conductor Having celebrated his twentieth anniversary as Boston Pops Conductor in 2015, Keith Lockhart is the second longest-tenured conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra since its founding in 1885. He took over as conductor in 1995, following John Williams’s thirteen-year tenure from 1980 to 1993; Mr. Williams succeeded the legendary Arthur Fiedler, who was at the helm of the orchestra for nearly fifty years. Keith Lockhart has conducted more than 1,800 Boston Pops concerts, most of which have taken place during the orchestra’s spring and holiday seasons in Boston’s historic Symphony Hall. He has also led annual Boston Pops appearances at Tanglewood, 42 national tours to 146 cities in 35 states, and four international tours to Japan and Korea. The annual July 4 Boston Pops concert draws a live audience of 800,000 to the Charles River Esplanade and millions more who view it on television or live webcast. In 2017, with Eaton Vance as presenting sponsor and Bloomberg exclusive media partner, the Pops organization presented its first self-produced Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. The list of more than 250 guest artists with whom Mr. Lockhart has collaborated is a virtual “who’s who” of performers and pop culture icons. He has led eight albums on the RCA Victor/BMG Classics label, including two—The Celtic Album and The Latin Album—that earned Grammy nominations. Recent releases on Boston Pops Recordings include A Boston Pops Christmas–Live from Symphony Hall and The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers. Released at the beginning of the 2017 Pops season, Lights, Camera…Music! Six Decades of John Williams features Keith Lockhart leading the Boston Pops in a collection of Williams’s compositions from the 1960s onward, some of which can be considered rarities.

Keith Lockhart’s increased focus on musical theater has attracted leading Broadway artists to the Pops stage. He has worked closely with hundreds of talented young musicians, including Fellows of the Tanglewood Music Center, college students from the Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music, and area high school students. He introduced the PopSearch talent competition and the innovative JazzFest and EdgeFest series, featuring prominent jazz and indie artists performing with the Pops. In addition to occupying the Julian and Eunice Cohen Boston Pops Conductor chair, Keith Lockhart currently serves as principal conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra in London, which he led in the June 2012 Diamond Jubilee Concert for Queen Elizabeth II, and as artistic director of the Brevard Music Center summer institute and festival in North Carolina. Prior to his BBC appointment, he spent eleven years as music director of the Utah Symphony, which he led at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. He has appeared as a guest conductor with virtually every major symphonic ensemble in North America, as well as several in Asia and Europe. Prior to coming to Boston, he was the associate conductor of both the Cincinnati Symphony and Cincinnati Pops orchestras, as well as music director of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, Keith Lockhart began his musical studies with piano lessons at the age of seven. He holds degrees from Furman University and Carnegie Mellon University, and honorary doctorates from several American universities. Visit keithlockhart.com for further information.

About the Boston Pops In 2017 the Boston Pops enters its 132nd season of entertaining audiences in Boston and beyond. Boston Pops Conductor Keith Lockhart marks his 23rd year at the helm of the orchestra. In 1881 Civil War veteran Henry Lee Higginson founded the Boston Symphony Orchestra, calling its establishment “the dream of my life.” From the start he intended to present, in the warmer months, concerts of light classics and the popular music of the day. From a practical perspective, Higginson realized that these “lighter” performances would provide year-round employment for his musicians. In May 1885—a little more than a month before the inaugural “Promenade Concert”—German-born conductor Adolf Neuendorff, under the aegis of the BSO, conducted a series of “Popular Concerts” in the Boston Music Hall, where the audience sat in typical concert seating and no refreshments were served. On July 11, 1885, Neuendorff—who became the first conductor of the Pops, before that name was officially adopted—led the first official “Promenade Concert,” distinguished from “Popular Concerts” by virtue of seating (tables and chairs instead of auditorium-style rows), program format (three parts divided by two intermissions, during which patrons could promenade around the concert hall), and the availability of food and beverages. For the rest of the 19th century, although formally called “Promenade Concerts,” they continued to be referred to informally as “Popular,” which eventually became shortened to “Pops,” the name officially adopted in 1900. The following year the orchestra performed for the first time in its new home, Symphony Hall. There were seventeen Pops conductors—beginning with the aforementioned Adolf Neuendorff—who preceded the legendary Arthur Fiedler (1930-1979). The first American-born musician to lead the orchestra, he established the Boston Pops as a national icon. When John Williams (1980-1993) succeeded Fiedler in 1980, he was the most highly acclaimed composer in Hollywood, and today, with 50 Academy Award nominations, he is the most-nominated living person in Academy history. With the Pops, Mr. Williams made a series of best-selling recordings, broadened and updated the Pops repertoire, and entertained audiences with live orchestral accompaniment to film clips of memorable movie scenes, many of which featured iconic music from his own scores. Keith Lockhart (1995-present) has led concerts spotlighting artists from virtually every corner of the entertainment world, all the while maintaining the Pops’ appeal to its core audience. He has made 79 television shows, led 42 national and four overseas tours, led the Pops at several high-profile sports events, and recorded fourteen albums. Mr. Lockhart’s tenure has been marked by a dramatic increase in touring, the orchestra’s first Grammy nominations, the first major network national broadcast of the July Fourth concert on the Charles River Esplanade, and the release of the Boston Pops’ first self-produced and self-distributed recordings. In 2017 the July Fourth concert opened a new page in its history, as the Pops organization presented its first self-produced Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, with Eaton Vance as presenting sponsor and Bloomberg exclusive media partner.

The Beach Boys, Special Guests You can capsulize most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they’ve had and how many millions of albums they’ve sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you’re assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. To be sure, this band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt. Happily for us all, The Beach Boys continue to create and perform with the same bold imagination and style that marked their explosive debut over 50 years ago. And now in 2013, their Capitol Records release, Sounds of Summer (RIAA certified triple platinum with over three million in sales and climbing), and its companion The Warmth of the Sun marks a resurgence in Beach Boys interest that has again rocked the world. Even more than the Beatles, The Beach Boys found through their music the key to unfading youth—and they made copies for everyone. To these guys, the beach isn’t just a place where the surf comes to play—it’s where life is renewed and made whole again. Captained by Mike Love, The Beach Boys play an astoundingly busy schedule of concerts, averaging 150 shows a year, ranging from sundrenched summer festivals to gala New Year’s celebrations and special events worldwide. In 1974 Mike Love’s concept album Endless Summer ignited a second generation of Beach Boys fans and stirred a tempest that rocked the music world. Grammy-winning songwriter Bruce Johnston, [Barry Manilow’s “I Write the Songs”], joined The Beach Boys in 1965, replacing Glenn Campbell, who filled-in for Brian Wilson, on vocals/ bass, when he retired from touring. Highly regarded as a singer-songwriter, Johnston’s vocal work with such legendary artists as Elton John and Pink Floyd firmly established him among rock’s elite artists. Had this remarkable band been less committed to its art and its fans, it could have retired from the field with honor at dozens of points along the way, confident that it had made a lasting contribution to world culture. It could have rested on the success of the epoch-

shifting Pet Sounds masterpiece in 1966 . . . or after recording Love’s co-written Golden Globe nominated “Kokomo” in 1988 and seeing it become its best selling single ever . . . or after being inducted that same year into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame . . . or after watching its worldwide album sales blow past l00 million . . . or after winning the NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001 [along with The Who, Bob Marley, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr. and Les Paul]. And still, The Beach Boys continue to have fun, fun, fun, with no end in sight. In 2012, The Beach Boys scheduled a 74 concert date limited 50th Anniversary Reunion Tour which was scheduled as a limited run reunion tour and ended in the U.S. July 15 and internationally on Sept 28th in which the original members reunited and released "That's Why God Made the Radio," the album debuted at # 3 on the Billboard charts, their highest chart position in 37 years and an unprecedented milestone. The Beach Boys are led by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston, who along with Jeffrey Foskett, Brian Eichenburger, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill and Scott Totten continue the legacy of the iconic American band. This tour will not feature Brian Wilson, Al Jardine or David Marks. Few, if any, acts can match The Beach Boys’ concert presence, spirit and performance. They were center-stage at Live Aid, multiple Farm Aids, the Statue of Liberty’s 100th Anniversary Salute, the Super Bowl and the White House. On one day alone—July 4, 1985—they played to nearly 2 million fans at shows in Philadelphia and Washington, D. C. Love’s role as the band’s front man sometimes overshadows his stature as one of rock’s foremost songwriters. “Surfin’,” The Beach Boys’ first hit came from his pen. With his cousin, Brian Wilson, Love wrote the classics “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “California Girls” and the Grammy nominated “Good Vibrations.” Years later, he showed he still had the lyrical chops by co-writing the irresistible and chart-topping “Kokomo.” On The Beach Boys’ near horizon is another national/world tour and continued charity activities through Mike Love’s Love Foundation, which supports national environmental and educational initiatives. Love and The Beach Boys’ recent efforts raised over a quarter of a million dollars for the Red Cross to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina and made additional contributions to the disaster relief in Haiti. The band appeared on countless worldwide TV shows throughout the years including: The Ed Sullivan Show, Dick Clark’s American Bandstand and The Tonight Show. Other television appearances include performances on Don Imus’ MSNBC show Imus In The Morning, TNT’s NBA All-Star Game, NBC’s Macy’s Day Parade, The Today Show, PBS’ A Capitol Fourth, Good Morning America, Weekend Today, The O’Reilly Factor. In addition to founding Beach Boy Mike Love (lead vocals) and Beach Boy-vet Bruce Johnston (vocals/keyboards)—Jeffrey Foskett (guitar/vocals), Brian Eichenburger (bass/ vocals), Tim Bonhomme (keyboards/vocals), John Cowsill of The Cowsills (percussion / vocals) and Scott Totten (guitar/vocals) round out the band.

THANK YOU

The Nantucket Cottage Hospital Foundation thanks the following businesses and individuals who helped to make this year’s Boston Pops on Nantucket concert possible.

Wellness Found Here On Nantucket we’re bound together not only by the Atlantic but something even deeper: the sense of responsibility we feel for each other. It brings out the best in us. Challenges us to be more resourceful, more collaborative and more determined than ever to meet the healthcare needs of year-round and summer visitors alike. Here’s a brief update about some of our programs and services: Primary care: Joel J. Hass, MD, joined the hospital’s medical staff as a full-time, year-round primary care physician in June 2017. Dr. Hass, who signed a five-year commitment with the hospital and has purchased a home on the island, opened his new practice at Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s office at 4 Bartlett Road, and will eventually move into the new hospital building when it is completed in 2018. His practice is open to new patients of all ages, and Dr. Hass is already welcoming families and seeing island pediatric patients for their ongoing medical care. Dr. Hass joined the primary care group practice at Nantucket Cottage Hospital that includes Drs. Kristy Acosta, George Butterworth, Mimi Koehm, and Diane Pearl. His hiring demonstrates Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s continuing efforts to provide the island community with a full complement of physicians of varying specialties, and options for primary care. Behavioral Health: Nantucket Cottage Hospital and the Nantucket Cottage Medical Group are committed to supporting the behavioral health needs of the island community. New full-time, year-round psychiatric nurse practitioner Hannah Severns has an extensive background in the assessment and treatment of mental health issues and substance use disorders, and is embedded in the primary care physician offices to asses, diagnose and treat patients with a wide range of behavioral health issues. In collaboration with the island’s primary care physicians and therapists, Severns sees patients of all ages, from pediatrics to geriatrics. In this role, Severns offers psychiatric evaluations, level of care assessments, medication management, and provides recommendations and treatment. Diagnostic Imaging: Three-dimensional mammography is now available at Nantucket Cottage Hospital with the Imaging Department’s recent acquisition of a Genius 3D mammography unit capable of tomosynthesis scans. This new technology provides island residents with enhanced breast cancer detection, reduces false positives, and decreases the need for call backs. In conventional 2D mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. A 26

3D mammography exam includes a tomosynthesis scan that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect. This type of exam requires no additional compression and takes just a few seconds longer than a conventional 2D breast cancer screening exam. Healing Near Home: Recovering from surgery can require more than just the proper medical care, monitoring, and rehabilitation expertise. Sometimes it’s a state-of-mind, and having the support of friends and family nearby. Nantucket Cottage Hospital offers a federally-licensed surgical recovery and physical rehabilitation service known as our Healing Near Home program. This unique program is intended for patients recovering from a major surgery, stroke, injury or illness who require additional rehabilitation or skilled nursing regardless of whether you were first treated on-island or elsewhere on the mainland. Oncology with the Mass General Cancer Center: If you’re a cancer patient who calls Nantucket home, even for just a few weeks during the year, you’ll be both amazed and comforted by the cancer care at Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Developed in partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital and led by Mass General Medical Director Richard T. Penson, MD, our program brings a team of cancer specialists to the island every month for patient consultations. In addition, a Board Certified Advanced Practice Oncology Registered Nurse is on-site to see cancer patients five days a week. And, of course, we have our own community of doctors and clinicians working in tandem with the Mass General team to support you and provide treatment as well. Our program engages everyone on our staff to focus on the interaction with our patients. These are just a few of the ways we provide care at Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Learn more about our other programs and services online at nantuckethospital.org

“We want to be the best small community hospital in the country, and that starts with listening to our patients, responding to their needs, and providing as many programs and services on-island as possible. Your presence here tonight helps us to fulfill our commitment to the Nantucket community.” Raymond Rocco Monto, MD President of the Medical Staff

Progress Update: Nantucket's New Hospital Donning hard hats and carrying shovels, the Nantucket Cottage Hospital community came together on Saturday, July 1st for the official groundbreaking ceremony for the island’s new hospital. Hospital staff, Trustees, donors, and community members gathered at the construction site in the shadow of the current 1957 hospital to celebrate what will become one of the finest new community hospitals in the country. The ceremony represented an historic milestone for both Nantucket Cottage Hospital, as well as the island community at large. After many years of preparation, community outreach, fundraising, and enabling projects, workers have finally begun the construction of a new two-story, 106,000-square-foot facility that will serve the medical needs of future generations of Nantucket residents and visitors. The hospital campus is now a construction zone, one in which NCH staff and departments will continue providing care to patients uninterrupted through the completion of the project. Over the summer, the island will witness extensive construction activity around the site, with steel expected to begin rising this month. Completion of the new hospital is anticipated in late 2018. The journey to the groundbreaking ceremony on July 1st was both challenging and exciting, involving extensive dialogue and collaboration with the Nantucket community. It all began nearly five years ago when, after numerous studies and evaluations, hospital leaders decided it was time to replace the aging and outdated facility that opened on Nantucket during the Eisenhower administration. But the first order of business was to demonstrate to the community the need for the hospital. An extensive education campaign that included weekly tours of the current facility, community forums, and advertising, helped to build a consensus among island residents that the time had come to construct a new hospital. The next question was where to build it. Nantucket Cottage Hospital proposed several possibilities, including the relocation of the facility to Wyer’s Valley or utilizing a portion of Mill Hill Park on Prospect Street for the project. But after listening to the community and weighing all the options, the consensus was to build the new hospital on the current site. This required both a phased approach, and additional support from the community at the 2015 Annual Town Meeting. In April 2015, voters gave their unanimous approval to rezone the hospital campus, providing much-needed flexibility in terms of setbacks, groundcover, parking requirements, and building height, which allowed the project to move forward on the existing property at 57 Prospect Street. 28

From there, the design process got underway in earnest, with hospital staff, patients, and community members all providing valuable insights and perspectives on how to create a new hospital that will meet the unique needs of Nantucket. Over the summer of 2016, Nantucket Cottage Hospital secured regulatory approvals from state and local permitting agencies, highlighted by a unanimous vote of the Massachusetts Public Health Council to approve the Determination of Need application for the new facility. Meanwhile, the largest and most ambitious capital campaign in the history of the island was in full-swing. The new Nantucket Cottage Hospital will be funded entirely through private donations, with no debt or taxpayer subsidies. The $120 million campaign, which will fund both the construction of the new hospital and a much-needed housing project for hospital staff, has garnered incredible support from all corners of the island. As of mid-July 2017, the hospital has received pledges and commitments of more than $102 million. With approvals in-hand, the enabling projects necessary to create a viable building site began last September. These projects included the relocation of the medical office building known as the Anderson Building to Prospect Street, as well as the move of the Founders Building to Vesper Lane. With those efforts complete, the 2017 summer season kicked off with a memorable groundbreaking ceremony and celebration.

Pillars of Philanthropy at Nantucket Cottage Hospital Nantucket Cottage Hospital relies on the generous support of the island community to provide an improbable amount of medical programs and services on an island 30 miles out to sea. The following is a general overview of how events like the Pops, as well as annual and planned giving, along with our capital campaign, support Nantucket Cottage Hospital in distinct ways: The Boston Pops on Nantucket The Boston Pops on Nantucket is one of the pillars of philanthropy for Nantucket Cottage Hospital. This event generates more than $2 million annually for the general operations of the hospital. These unrestricted funds are critically important to sustain our programs and services on a year-round basis, especially during the off-season when we continue to have high fixed costs, but low volume. The funds raised during the Boston Pops on Nantucket benefit all hospital departments, whether it is the emergency Department or the medical/surgical floor, social services or the laboratory, imaging or the Walk-In Care service. Moreover, the unrestricted nature of the money generated from the Pops event allows the hospital much-needed flexibility in responding to needs as they arise throughout the year. Capital Campaign for Nantucket's New Hospital Our capital campaign, Building Our Future, Committed To Care, will provide the funds necessary to build our island’s dynamic new hospital, as well as complete our campus with critically-needed hospital housing. This $120 million campaign, the largest in island history, will create the foundation for our future with one of the finest community hospitals in the country at the heart of a healthcare campus that can help accommodate our unique staff housing challenges. The funds raised during the campaign go directly toward these projects to cover the one-time expenses associated with the construction of the new hospital and the housing component. Through the extraordinary generosity of the Nantucket community, the new hospital will be funded entirely with private donations, debt-free, and without taxpayer dollars. The NCH Fund The NCH Fund is our annual appeal to the island community. Annual gifts to The NCH Fund support all facets of patient care at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and provide the funds necessary to respond to the unforeseen events and circumstances that occur throughout the year. The costs associated with staffing and operating a heavily regulated healthcare facility 30 miles at sea are always high, while the number of patients we serve fluctuates significantly throughout the year. The unrestricted funds from The NCH Fund allow Nantucket Cottage Hospital to meet those challenges, and expand services and programs in a way that responds to community needs.

30

The 1911 Society As a lasting legacy, many donors choose to make a bequest or other planned gift to the hospital. These gifts can often allow our supporters to give more and ensure the hospital can continue to be a center of health and wellness for future generations. The 1911 Society was created to recognize their gracious and visionary support. These gifts can be earmarked for a specific purpose, dedicated to a department, the hospital’s endowment fund, or sustain the hospital generally as unrestricted funds.

"What years ago may have seemed like a lofty far away dream - a new hospital - is now close to becoming reality. While we have made remarkable strides toward reaching our goal, the housing component remains the last piece in completing our campus. We look forward to the final leg of this campaign and we thank everyone who has helped create what we believe will be one of America's finest rural hospitals." Bruce A. Percelay Chairman, Capital Campaign

“For more than 105 years, the island community has generously supported Nantucket Cottage Hospital. Whether it’s attending an event like the Pops, a gift to the capital campaign, or contributions through annual or planned giving, this extraordinary philanthropy allows us to navigate the challenges of providing quality and compassionate care 30 miles at sea.” Reed Chisholm & Jeanine Borthwick Co-Chairs, Development Committee
