hanks to an unprecedented island-wide effort, our capital campaign for the hospital part of our campus is now complete. We are now on the homestretch of our

efforts to raise $20 million for a dedicated housing facility for traveling nurses, visiting specialists, consultants and a wide range of medical personnel. The shortage of quality affordable housing on Nantucket can best be described as critical. Virtually every institution on this island is feeling the effects of the lack of available housing within the budgets of their staffs and NCH is no exception. Without the ability to provide quality employee housing we simply cannot attract and retain the quality of talent we need to service what will be a cutting-edge medical facility.

The new housing complex will be situated on land we already own behind Holdgates Cleaners and will enable employees to simply walk across the street to get to work. Not only will the building provide incredible convenience versus the scattered locations that we now have but the buildings themselves will be environmentally sensitive and operationally efficient. We could not be more excited about showcasing the new hospital to the island in the coming months and beginning the final leg of our campus plan with a badly needed housing amenity.

Sincerely,

Bruce A. Percelay Chairman, Capital Campaign

designation as a rural health clinic, which will improve the hospital’s finances by achieving a higher reimbursement rate from Medicare and Medicaid.

With the exterior construction largely completed, construction teams are currently working to finish the interior floors, wiring, lighting, and other fixtures. New equipment is arriving and being installed, tested and calibrated in preparation for the extensive inspection process by local and state agencies ahead of the grand opening.

When the new facility opens to patients in January, the final phase of the project will commence including the demolition of the old hospital and the completion of the final site work, parking area, and landscaping. This phase is expected to be completed by June 2019.

Construction crews are also working toward completing the new helipad for MedFlight transports, which will be located in the northwest corner of the property close to the emergency department to allow for safer and more efficient transfers. Meanwhile, the hospital staff is engaged in an extensive transition planning effort to prepare for the move into the new building. Logistics, staffing, and safety are all being considered with a consulting team that specializes in hospital moves. The clinical team is also preparing for a transition to a group practice, which will allow all NCH primary care physicians and visiting specialists to come together under one roof to better serve patients. This feature of the new building will also allow NCH to earn a

At the time of this publication, the hospital has made great progress on its $120 million capital campaign, with just $4.5 million to go to complete the campus with critical hospital housing. This fundraising campaign, the largest in island history, will create the foundation for our future with one of the finest community hospitals in the country at the heart of a healthcare campus that can help accommodate our unique staff housing challenges. The funds raised during this campaign go directly toward these projects to cover the one-time expenses associated with the construction of the new hospital and the housing component. Through the extraordinary generosity of the Nantucket community, the new hospital will be funded entirely with private donations, debt-free, and without taxpayer dollars. We look forward to welcoming the island community into our new hospital in 2019.

World-Class Cancer Care Has Never Been Closer

ith its connection to the Mass General Cancer Center, Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s oncology program has grown extensively in recent years, allowing more Nantucket patients to receive the care they need on-island and close to home.

Erwin and Stephanie Greenberg. Since 2013, Swim Across America – Nantucket has raised millions for cancer care on the island that has been donated to Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s oncology program and Palliative & Supportive Care of Nantucket.

In the new Nantucket Cottage Hospital, the Cancer Care and Infusion Center will have an expanded base of operations that will improve the patient experience and deliver enhanced privacy.

Beyond the benefits of the cancer and infusion center, the expanded treatment area in the new hospital also reflects the growth of the cancer care program. Under the leadership of Elizabeth Tracey, MSN, ONS, the program has grown to include full-time oncology nurse practitioner Ugne Aleknaite, MSN, along with clinical nurse leader Gretchen Buchmann, BSN, infusion center nurses Kristen Chenard, BSN, Joan Macallister, BSN, ONS, and Lisa Lacoursiere. Originally spearheaded by Dr. Bruce Chabner, the director of clinical research at the MGH Cancer Center and a former NCH Trustee, the team is currently caring for nearly 150 patients in different stages of disease, with 20-30 in active treatment.

The current hospital has one room with two chairs for its non-malignant infusions and chemotherapy administration. In the new hospital, that area will expand to include five private infusion bays overlooking conservation land off Vesper Lane, as well as a full nurses’ station for staff. This wing of the new hospital will be named the Swim Across America Infusion Center in recognition of the substantial support the program has received from the local open water swim event that takes place every August. The naming of the infusion center for Swim Across America was made possible by a gift from

Nantucket weekly. As an MGH Cancer Services provider, the team has a direct connection with the multidisciplinary teams at MGH, including thoracic, breast, and lymphoma specialists. Nantucket Cottage Hospital’s program sets itself apart from other community hospital oncology experiences by connecting patients with oncologists specializing in their particular disease and maintaining that relationship throughout the course of their treatment. “We are committed to patient-centered care rooted in continuity and collaboration with oncology specialists, nurses, pharmacies, local primary care providers, and the patient, that brings the same level of care to Nantucket as patients have come to expect by going to Mass General,” said Aleknaite. “Year-round and summer residents can get chemotherapy and immunotherapy right here on the island. The whole team links its hands to care for the

patients from the initial diagnosis, through cancer treatment and long range follow-up.” Aleknaite received her oncology nurse practitioner training at MGH, rotating between different cancer groups, learning about the latest treatments and research, while seeing patients with MGH oncologists and nurse practitioners. From Nantucket, she is able to connect remotely with the monthly MGH nurse practitioner meetings to continue her education, as well as participate in on-site oncology training opportunities. “Cancer diagnosis is devastating for the whole family and it turns people’s lives upside down,” Aleknaite said. “Any sign of normalcy can bring a sense of relief. Our patients can get chemotherapy and pick up their kids from summer camp on the same day.” 7

Celebrating Nantucket Natives

W

ith an all-time record number of babies born at Nantucket Cottage Hospital in recent years, the growth of the island community underscores the need for a first-class maternity unit in the new building. And that is just what has been designed for Nantucket moms and their newborns in the new hospital. Overlooking a serenity garden, the next iteration of The Birthplace includes three labor and delivery rooms, a labor/exam room, a post-partum room, an expanded jacuzzi tub for laboring mothers, and a state-of-the-art nursery. A stunning skylight is another new feature in the unit where the next generation of Nantucket Natives will be born. Under the direction of Drs. Margaret Koehm and Kristy Acosta, as well as long-time LDRP

(labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum) Nurse Manager Penny Kirk, the new Birthplace will provide island families with an environment of comfort and safety, and even greater amenities before, during, and after one of life’s most exciting moments. When patients and families visit the Birthplace in the new Nantucket Cottage Hospital, they will also be greeted by a new Wall of Nantucket Natives. Since 1999, Nantucket Cottage Hospital has honored Nantucket Natives who were born at the hospital with bricks that make up the Wall of Natives. Located outside The Birthplace, the wall includes bricks engraved with the native’s name and date of birth. For a $100 donation, the bricks have become a beloved ritual for many island families with new babies.

One of the new hospital's Labor and Delivery rooms overlooking the Old Mill. Furniture and equipment will be installed over the next month.

8

This tradition will continue in the new hospital, with all the names being transferred from the old wall to the new, and the bricks being replaced by tiles. The bricks in the current hospital are unable to be relocated to the new hospital building. After the new hospital has opened, NCH will set a time for people who

are interested in taking a photo and doing a stone rubbing of their brick in the old building to do so. In the meantime, NCH is accepting pre-orders for new additions to the Wall of Nantucket Natives, but their names will not be displayed until the new hospital opens.

One of the hopes for the new hospital, beyond all the improvements it will bring for patient

care and privacy, was that it would help attract

new physicians and providers by giving them a state-of-the-art facility in which to practice. Over the past year as the new hospital has

taken shape, that theory has already proven

to be accurate. In that timeframe, Nantucket Cottage Hospital has successfully recruited

and hired several new medical providers to expand access and allow patients to stay on-island for more of their medical care.

it’s likely not the silver bullet that will solve all of our recruitment challenges, we had hoped

that it would help us attract the next generation of clinicians and we’re cautiously optimistic that is already happening.”

One of the new additions to the medical staff, full-time surgeon Dr. Frank O’Connor, has

said repeatedly that without the promise of the new operating rooms and surgical capabilities in the new hospital on the horizon, he likely

Gordon & Lulie Gund’s Philanthropic Commitment In the world of philanthropy, the Gunds are well known for founding the Foundation

Fighting Blindness, which funds research to

identify and develop preventions, treatment

and cures for people suffering vision loss from retinal degenerative diseases like retinitis

pigmentosa, Usher syndrome and macular

degeneration. This family of diseases affects more than 10 million people in the United

States and many times that number worldwide.

G

ordon and Lulie Gund first came to Nantucket in the late 1960s to visit

family and friends on vacation. The

charm of the island brought them back again

and again, and Nantucket eventually became the Gund family’s summer retreat where

their children and grandchildren spent their summers growing up.

“Nantucket is special to us for its natural beauty and the sea around it, and the joy we have in being there with our family,” Gordon Gund said.

Gund, who last year was featured with Lulie in

the film The Illumination at the Nantucket Film Festival, went blind at the age of 30 due to a degenerative eye disease known as retinitis

pigmentosa. Yet the adversity at a young age did not stop him from launching a successful

career in business, finance, philanthropy, and as an artist.

12

Locally on Nantucket, the Gunds identified

Nantucket Cottage Hospital as one of their primary philanthropic priorities.

“It plays a critically important role in making

Nantucket a special place to visit and to live,” Gund said.

And it’s why the Gunds decided to contribute a $1 million gift toward Nantucket Cottage

Hospital’s capital campaign for the island’s new hospital.

“We were inspired by the importance of having an up-to-date, more fully technologically

equipped medical facility that can effectively and efficiently respond to and treat most

illnesses and injuries and is able to stabilize patients long enough for transport to

specialized care off island,” Gund said. “Also,

very important to us, is to have a hospital staff as capable, caring, and wonderfully positive as has been the hallmark of the Nantucket

Cottage Hospital as long as we have been coming to the island.”

Beyond their financial contribution to the

capital campaign, the Gunds also informed Nantucket Cottage Hospital President and

CEO Dr. Margot Hartmann that they wanted to

An Incredible Legacy of Generosity Hospital Thrift Shop Donates $500,000 to New Hospital

T

he Nantucket Hospital Thrift Shop’s

tradition of generosity stretches back 89 years, but the venerable island

institution recently completed perhaps its largest and most ambitious gift to date.

In July 2018, an incredible $500,000 donation from the Thrift Shop to Nantucket Cottage

Hospital’s capital campaign for the island’s new hospital was announced by Brenda Williams, the President of the Thrift Shop’s Board of Directors.

To think that any thrift shop, let alone one that is only open from May through October and

relies upon donated goods, could make such a significant gift toward the health and wellness of the island community is truly remarkable. “Thanks to the hard work and dedication of

our volunteers and staff and to all the people

who have brought donations to the Shop, we

were thrilled to be able to fulfill the pledge and present the check to the hospital in July of this year,” Williams said.

The genesis for the $500,000 contribution to the hospital’s capital campaign occurred in

2014 when former Treasurer Nancy Moylan

suggested the Thrift Shop set aside a portion of its income each year to form the basis of a

14

larger gift toward Nantucket’s new hospital. That year the Thrift Shop Board of Directors informed the hospital of its pledge to the capital campaign.

The thought among the Board of Directors

was to do “something that was substantial.

Something that would be remembered,” said

former President Cathy Ward. “This was a big decision for the board to make and we are all

very proud of making a stretch goal on behalf of the volunteers and donors and shoppers.”

So, even as the Thrift Shop continued to make

success: residents who donate gently used

for much-needed medical equipment and

volunteers who devote substantial time and

its annual gifts to Nantucket Cottage Hospital

other capital projects, it was also setting aside the funds that would eventually become the

incredible $500,000 contribution toward the

new hospital. It was an act of generosity much

in keeping with the Thrift Shop’s long tradition of giving back.

Back in 1929, a group of dedicated volunteers

items, shoppers who get great deals, numerous energy, and a manager and staff who run the daily operation of this thriving organization. It’s a tradition that continues to generate

great returns for the community by providing affordable goods and for the hospital by

providing on-going financial support that will benefit Nantucket patients into the future.

A Piece of History in the New Hospital 16

T

he former courtyard behind Nantucket Cottage Hospital looks a little different these days.

The Anderson Building has been moved, and the new hospital has risen in its place. The two beautiful beech trees that provided staff and patients shade in this area are gone too, but they weren’t simply cut down and forgotten. The old trees were instead skillfully milled by islander Sam Myers and have been cured over the past two years in the workshop of Barber & Sons, Inc., an island wordworking and building company. In an effort to repurpose these two beloved trees, the hospital has contracted with Nate and Beau Barber to use the milled wood to create custom furniture for the new hospital. The Barbers are now working to create tables and benches for the second-floor lobby and dining area of the new building. This furniture, handmade on Nantucket and generously funded through a donation from the Hospital Thrift Shop, will combine the old with the new, adding a unique touch to the island’s new hospital.

Nate Barber, Dr. Margot Hartmann, and Beau Barber, inspect the wood from the beech trees at the Barbers' Nantucket workshop.

Nantucket Cottage Hospital President and CEO Dr. Margot Hartmann, along with the hospital’s Art & Environment Committee and the Cannon Architecture interior designers, toured the Barbers’ workshop several times over the last two years to see the shade of wood and its progress and get an idea for where the pieces might fit into the new building. “While we were all sad to see these old trees go, we felt this was a fitting way to honor them and incorporate them into our new hospital,” Dr. Hartmann said. “We’re excited to see what Nate and Beau will be able to do with the beech wood, and we will make sure that staff, patients, and visitors know where this unique furniture came from.” While the old beech trees will be honored inside the new hospital, the NCH campus will also be transformed. The town-approved landscaping plan calls for the planting of more than 150 new trees, including dogwoods, American elms, white oaks, red maples, jack pines, white firs and honey locusts, among others. These trees are in addition to hundreds of new shrubs, perennials, ferns and grasses that will be planted around the NCH campus as part of the landscaping plan for the new hospital. 17

Touring the Construction Site At the end of August, Nantucket Cottage Hospital invited our major donors to the construction site for tours of the island’s new hospital. Hosted by Bruce Percelay, Campaign Chair, our donors saw a first-hand glimpse into the incredible progress toward completing the facility. After touring the construction site, guests enjoyed a reception, emceed by David Gregory, to celebrate the power of philanthropy and our generous island community. The new hospital will be funded entirely with private donations, debt-free, and without taxpayer dollars.

Margot Hartmann, MD, PhD President and CEO, Nantucket Cottage Hospital

Over the past year, I have watched in awe as our island’s new hospital has taken shape in the shadow of our current building. We are so excited to welcome the community into the new facility and share the results of this monumental effort by so many people that will be a gamechanger for our patients and staff. We expect to treat our first patient in the new building by mid-January. I want to thank you all for your support over the years as we secure the future of healthcare on the island we love.
