How to enrol

Once you have chosen your course/s, you can either enrol on our website or by phone.

1. Online

Visit www.aclessex.com and create an account. You can then either search for the course title using the search box or browse our website.

Once the course has been selected, you will be asked to fill out an enrolment form (non-qualification) or asked to enrol onto an assessment session (qualification).

2. PHONE

Call 03330 607 002 and you will be put through to a member of our customer service team. Before calling, please make a note of the course title or course code.

Our phone lines are open Monday to Friday, from 8:30am to 5pm, unless otherwise stated.

Here at Adult Community Learning Essex (ACL) we pride ourselves on finding the very best ways for people to learn, to fit with their personal preferences and treat everyone as an individual.

The types of learning opportunities have increased rapidly over recent years, giving greater access and flexibility alongside the changes to work and life within the modern world. Here is a brief explanation to the ways that ACL delivers learning:

Traditional Classroom

Whether at an ACL centre or in an outreach venue our traditional classroom approach remains the core of our teaching and learning.

Within these settings we deliver to small groups of adults the subjects selected to study using an individualised personal approach. ACL believes and supports the huge benefits of collaborative learning and encourages our learners to share and explore their learning with their fellow students. Live Online Learning

The Live Online Learning is a new experience for most of us.

These courses are delivered using a web-based platform (Microsoft Teams) where we have created a virtual classroom that retains the core features and high-quality experience of a physical classroom. The features we use include video cameras so that learners can see their tutor and each other, microphones to talk with each other as well as a text chat function, break out rooms for small group discussions or tutorials, class notebooks for jotting down ideas, presentations provided in real time with discussions in the moment with the tutor and fellow learners. All of this from the comfort of your own preferred location.

Self-led Online Learning

Our self-led courses apply a blended approach to learning.

Our programmes are flexible and enable learners to experience a range of learning and support opportunities in a variety of formats such as in the workplace by observation, online or at a local ACL centre. Dependant on the course, the learner may have a dedicated tutor who they will meet (online or face to face) once a month or online resources and tutor support where required. Additionally, there may be additional workshops included in the course. This will support the learner to be able to expand on their new knowledge and develop new skills.

Hybrid Learning

A brand new style of learning for 2022/23, ACL has invested in a suite of state of the art hybrid technology classrooms across our centres. These provides the opportunity for learners to either join the course in the physical classroom or remotely live online. Combining all the features of our traditional classroom and live online learning by sharing the learning experience with those in the classroom and those who are accessing from their own location.

At locations across Essex including ACL centres and Libraries, we are introducing the Skills Hubs. These purpose-built rooms will allow individuals to access technology, complete online courses and initial assessments, and improve their digital skills. A facilitator will be available to help with any technical difficulties or questions that may arise.

We also offer Microsoft Office and Cyber Security courses to help you improve your career prospects and feel more confident.

English and maths play a vital part in our daily lives. Whether applying for a job, helping children with their homework or just reading a newspaper or online article. Our free* English and maths courses will help to blow away the cobwebs, improve your confidence and gain a qualification. Whatever your reason to improve your English or maths, we can help! Support for all the family

If you’re a parent, grandparent or caring for a child or young person in Essex, we have support for you. Paying for your course

There are several options available to help reduce financial barriers to learning. Our teams are always on hand to answer any questions you may have.

ACL receives funding from the Education and Skills Funding Agency to deliver courses to Essex residents. This funding could cover some or all the costs of your course depending on your circumstances or prior achievements. A few examples are below but please come and talk to us so we can see what you may be entitled to.

• Maths and English courses including GCSEs could be free if you don’t already have a C/4 grade or equivalent

• Essential Digital Skills programmes could be free for those with basic IT skills assessed below level 1

• If you are unemployed or earning a gross annual income of £18,525 or less you could be eligible to complete a level 2 accredited course without charge

• The new level 3 entitlement means that adults without a full level 3 qualification like a Diploma or A-Levels could undertake an accredited course that’s fully funded from the National Skills Fund

• Advanced Learner Loans are available for courses at levels 3 to 6 and are only paid back once you start earning £27,295 a year (before tax and other deductions)

• Support with travel costs, childcare and course materials including books, laptop loan and WiFi could be available whilst you study if you have either a gross household income of less than £32,000 per annum (not including house shares, or where rent is paid separately) or a personal gross income of less than £18,525 per annum.

• If you are in receipt of certain benefits or earning a gross salary of less than £18,525 you could receive a 50% discount on non-accredited courses

• In addition to the above we have a dedicated team that provide financial advice and guidance to learners during their course should they need it.

Nurseries and Preschools

Our Ofsted registered preschools and nurseries care for children aged 3 months to 5 years old. Childcare services are available to both the local community and ACL learners. Financial support could be available to support you during your studies to pay for childcare (see page 10).

A place for our learners to relax and unwind, our cafes are open throughout the week in centres across Essex. Our cafés are run by our on-site staff and Supported Learning learners who are completing their employability training. Grab a cuppa and connect with fellow learners whilst you study with us.

Hair & Beauty Salons

We’re pleased to let you know that our salons are open and looking forward to welcoming back customers. All our salons follow government guidance to ensure they are clean and safe for staff, learners and customers. You will be able to access a fantastic range of treatments in one of our nine salons. All treatments are carried out by ACL learners under the supervision of their tutors.

Guide to Level Progression

Level 1

These courses help you gain the skills to move onto an intermediate qualification.

Level 2

Intermediate level for new entrants or those moving on from a Level 1 course.

Level 3

Advanced level which assumes prior achievement at level 2 or previous study/work in relevant subject area.

Levels 4&5

Higher level programmes are designed for those already working in the sector and looking to develop their skills up to degree level.

The Nightingale Bursary

The Nightingale Bursary, funded by Essex County Council, aims to help those who work within the Health & Social Care sector to progress within their careers.

The bursary will fund the training of Health & Social Care employees and personal assistants, including those who work as unpaid carers. Top-up training is also available to support continued professional development and financial bursaries to provide equipment, travel expenses and resources for new entrants into the workforce.

An exciting Fast Track Management programme is included which will support the recruitment of new Care Managers across Essex along with ambitious plans to increase the uptake of apprenticeships in the Health and Care Sector. Taster/Short Courses

A short course for people wishing to try learning a language before committing to a longer course. No previous knowledge is necessary.

Starter

For complete beginners who have no previous knowledge of the language. By the end of the course you’ll have the knowledge and confidence to ask and answer simple questions, and will be familiar with a handful of useful everyday expressions.

Improvers

You should have studied the language for at least a year or be able to ‘get by’ in a limited number of everyday situations, such as basic shopping, ordering a meal and understanding simple directions and times. You will revise previous learning and will learn how to talk simply about yourself, your interests and gain further vocabulary and grammar language knowledge.

Intermediate

You should have studied the language for 2 or 3 years and be able to exchange basic information about yourself and others and state simply what you did. You will revise previous learning and will learn further past

You will learn to converse simply but accurately on a variety of everyday topics, read and understand short texts and write messages and short letters.

Advanced

For those who have studied the language for at least 4 or 5 years and who wish to consolidate and extend their skills. It may also be a suitable re-entry point for those who have studied at an advanced level in the past. Using a wealth of authentic materials, you will practise expressing your needs, wishes and opinions and will develop the ability to understand news items in the media and write letters and reports with confidence.

Circle

This is a high level course for those who have studied the language for at least 5 – 6 years who are already reasonably fluent. Language structures will be revised and communication skills practised in order to improve confidence and increase fluency and accuracy. You will gain a deeper insight into the language and culture. Using a wealth of authentic materials, you will practise expressing your needs, wishes and opinions and will develop the ability to understand and discuss topics of general interest.

Guide to Level Progression

Level 2

Intermediate level designed for new entrants into a subject area or sector.

Level 3

Advanced level which assumes prior achievement at level 2 or previous study/work in relevant subject area.

Levels 4&5

Higher level programmes designed for those already working in the sector and looking to develop their skills up to degree level.

You may be looking to gain your first step on the career ladder or be looking for a career change. A minimum of 6 hours per week will be spent in some form of ‘off job learning’ activity. We will work with you and your line manager to set up a programme and agree a learning plan.

The apprenticeship lasts from 15-24 months depending on the type and level being undertaken. If you do not already have grade C (or suitable equivalent) or above in maths and English, you will be required to do this as part of your programme. Apprenticeships are also suitable for people who are already employed but require additional skills to meet the needs of their role e.g. promotion or change of job.

Apprentices do not contribute to the cost of their programme – your employer will either pay the full amount through their apprenticeship levy or contribute towards the cost with the remainder funded by the government. Work Based Learning

You will need to be employed in the sector that you are looking to undertake your qualification in. Programmes are available at levels 2 through to 5 and are suitable for people wishing to develop their workplace skills. You may be required to attend some classroom sessions which could be outside of normal working hours.

You will have a dedicated tutor who will visit you in the workplace, set you work and observe your workplace practice. Funding could be available to help pay for your course e.g. Advanced Learning Loan or a bursary to pay for things like books or a laptop for the duration of your studies. Our offer includes programmes and courses that can be delivered online, in the workplace, as well as traditional classroom sessions in one of Essex based centres. There are opportunities for training to be delivered in the evening and on the weekend to meet business need.

Time for something new

Are you wanting to get back in to employment? Are you worried you do not have the skills needed to return to the workplace? Not even sure where to start. This one off workshop will explore all of these and give you hint and tips to help you.

An opportunity to be in control of shaping your employment choices so that this is your year! This is not just a course that looks at employability skills, but it gives you the chance to harness the skills you already have, develop additional skills and gain a Gateway Awarded Qualification.

These workshops will be on a series of topics that support parenting a child with SEND needs and what support, guidance and ideas we can share with parents experiencing similar dilemmas, battles or challenges.

Before, after and during a diagnosis, parents can feel quite overwhelmed, guilty, lost and isolated. These sessions allow parents to gain peer to peer support alongside strategies and tips from facilitators and parents on topics that are relevant to supporting your parenting journey.

Specialist Workshops

These one-off workshops cover a variety of topics, offering support for you and your family.

We also offer bespoke courses for schools, organisations and groups that are delivered either online or face-to-face. We are always looking at innovative ways to work in partnership to support Essex residents.
