WELCOME TO AC LIVING MAGAZINE PUBLISHER | EDITOR IN CHIEF Alice Sexton

Well Hello Spring! It finally stopped raining here in the north Georgia mountains (double jinx) and we’ve had typical spring weather– fresh air, sunshine and Daffodils. Perfect days for sitting outside at one of our local dog-friendly breweries soaking up some much-needed vitamin D. One of the greatest things about living in a small mountain town is that you almost always run into someone you know– and if not– just sit down at any table and make some new friends. Maxine and Billy Zoom love going to these places, meeting new people, getting Maxine and Billy Zoom posing with the attention and of course, treats. Daffodils on our daily hike. Spring surely It really is that simple around is in full bloom. here! With spring just about over and summer right around the corner we’ve included some great tips in this issue from ACE hardware in Ellijay on prepping any type of garden for the coming season, from Ellijay & Williams Tire Company about getting ready for that big road trip and from Power Solutions Unlimited to keep your home safe during spring and summer storms. We have also featured the awesome Ellijay Coffeehouse owned by JoAnn Antonelli and Rick Lucas. Their unique style, whimsical design, great coffee and scrumptious food make this is a must stop for anyone visiting the area. The fireplace and leather couches, books and board games have made this the “Living Room” for many locals and tourists alike. Although this time of year the sunny patio does beckon. If you’re thinking about building your dream home here in the mountains and are not so much into the log cabin style, Covered Bridge Estates is surely a place you should check out. Their modern take on Craftsman Style homes is unique to this area. Bringing you the best of both worlds– gorgeous mountain views and a clean yet rustic style- what could be better? Also, in this issue is our famous list of Spring & Summer Festivals and Fairs. We pretty much double-dare anyone to try and get to them all! Just remember to check before you travel as you might guess, things around here aren’t carved in stone, you know, we’re on mountain time! Coming up in the next issue we’ll be featuring summer activities and some of our more unique shopping experiences for those rainy days or even just a break from the heat. While the boys are out fishing or golfing, the girls go shopping! Ok, not all girls, I know plenty that are pretty darn good fly fishers and golfers too, but you get the idea. We sure hope you have a great time up here in our neck of the woods. Looks like our local Bobcat has recently crossed my driveway. Or is that track too big for a Bobcat? Hmm...

KNOCKED OUT Landscape & Garden Editor Kevin Johnson Explains why Our Favorite Knockout Roses Might Just Get Knocked Out
R
Roses, cherished for their beautiful blooms and fragrance, are commonly used in our yards and landscapes. Anyone who has grown roses understands how challenging they can be to maintain, often requiring lots of time and effort to produce, thus enhancing their intrinsic value. The introduction of the Knockout Rose –Rosaceae rosa “Radzazz”– roughly 15 years ago made rose lovers happier than ever as this new variety is known for being easy to grow, extremely disease tolerant, drought resistant and ever blooming. Now the bad news– Knockout Roses are in trouble. Over planting and overuse has made them highly susceptible to the spread of insects and disease. Rose Rosette Disease (RRD) may well spell the end of the Knockout Rose as well as several other varieties of roses. RRD or Witches Broom as it is often called because of the way it causes new shoots to grow straight up and close together in broom-shaped clusters, is a viral rose disease spread by a tiny insect. The primary vector of this virus is spread by the Eriophyid mite, which is invisible to the naked eye. The wingless and microscopic mite is carried on the wind, which means mass plantings are particularly susceptible. The virus is spread from plant to plant as the mites feed on the tender new growth of the rose. And while Knock Out roses are its most famous victims, the disease is a threat to all commercial hybrid roses, including favorites such as hybrid tea roses, floribundas, grandifloras and old-fashioned varieties. RRD can also be spread through lax pruning and grafting practices with the mites moving from plant to plant on tools that have not been cleaned or disinfected between use. Once infected, this disease can be fatal to the plant. I have seen firsthand how devastating the Rose Rosette virus can be, so learning to identify this disease is critical. This spring, it will be extremely important to inspect your roses. Plant symptoms of RRD include a thickening of the stems, the foliage to have an abnormal red color, and rapidly elongating- Witches Broom- shoots. Flowers and buds will also become deformed and the plant APRIL/MAY 2019

Above: Knockout Rose with Rose Rosette Disease. may have many distorted and dwarfed leaves. If you think your roses have been infected, don’t waste your time and money spraying with insecticides, fungicides and miticides. I’ve tried this approach with little success. Remember we are dealing with a virus that becomes systemic throughout the entire plant. Sadly, RRD is not curable. My advice is to completely remove the entire plant from the landscape, including all of the roots. This may prevent the disease from further spreading to healthy plants. I know this doesn’t sound fun, but it’s the best approach. Once the infected plants are removed, or if your roses are not showing signs of RRD, it is extremely important that pruners be completely disinfected with a water/bleach solution after

each use to discourage the spread of the disease. In the June/July edition of AC Living Magazine I plan on covering the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid as it threatens the survival of this valuable tree species. If you have hemlocks growing on your property, you need to know about this devastating insect. So see you next issue! Rooms With A Mountain View Style & Design Editor Cindy Trimble Explores New Window Shades for the Mountain Modern Home
O
One of the final details added to our projects are window treatments. Whether to add window treatments or not to home with beautiful architecture and spectacular views always creates a debate with our clients. During the daytime, everyone wants to maximize the views that our area is abundant with. But when the night falls, with our wonderful mountain “dark skies”, the vast and expansive windows become “black holes” giving the open modern spaces a cold feeling. Even though everyone knows that on top of a mountain, there is complete privacy outside your windows (unless an unsuspecting drone flies by), there is still an uncomfortable feeling that maybe there is someone out there???? We hear this all the time. And it is always a good idea to have window treatments of some sort on all windows facing streets, or where someone can see in the house when you are not home, simply for security. With large windows that face east or west, without an exterior roof structure that provides sun screening or shading, there is a problem with too much sun during certain times of day. Homeowners need sun screening but again they do not want to block the beautiful views. Harsh sunlight will fade building materials and furnishings and can make it impossible to see TV’s. This is also a concern for the solar gain and heat build-up that comes with harsh sunlight. Even though window treatments are the last element to be installed in our projects, we are thinking window treatments throughout the design and construction process so that we have proper trim to support blinds, electrical where needed to power blinds, depth of window sills to house blinds and enough area on either side of large windows for stacking of drapery. We also try to locate HVAC ducts where they will not interfere with window treatments. Luckily there are a lot of new window treatments that provide window covering that help solve these dilemmas. There are window treatments that APRIL/MAY 2019
Cindy Trimble and Will Reed, owners of Blind and Shutter Worx of Blue Ridge, GA– a local Window Covering Design Studio– recommend considering your window treatment options early on in the design process. New generations of pleated shades provide different levels of opacity for every budget, and fold up to nearly nothing on the top of the window frame. can be activated when needed and closed and minimized when not needed that do not distract from the beautiful architecture or outside view. There are new generations of pleated shades that are made from stiffened fabric that unfold easily to cover windows (and can range from light filtering to blackout) but when raised and put away, they fold up to nearly nothing on the top of the window. They usually are within the frame of the window so there is zero glass covered by them blocking any of the view. There are all sorts of solar shades that are made from a woven fabric that has different levels of opacity, that block the light and UV rays, but still allow you to see through and admire the views. The new materials the manufacturers are using to create the vast array of window treatments are as diverse as the mountain architectural styles are that we are working on. The new mountain home ranges from ultra-rustic with heavy logs or timbers, to traditional with heavy moldings and details to ultra-modern with flat sheetrock walls with wide spans of glass. Our new company

Celebrate Earth Day with the folks at “Keep Gilmer Beautiful” On Saturday April 27th join the Gilmer County community in the big clean-up. Last year, over 200 county residents participated, and this year, you could too. The folks of Gilmer County come out in force; schools will participate on their grounds (including cross-country trails,) the mountain bikers on their trails, families, scouts, church groups, and just about everyone who loves our beautiful mountain community are welcome to join in the fun. From 8am to 2pm in the Gilmer County Courthouse parking lot there will be bands, food, fun and T-shirts for those who participate. And of, course big dumpsters set up nearby. Keep Gilmer Beautiful also has an “Adopt a Road” program where businesses, organizations, families or just about anyone are responsible for picking up trash on that road at least four times a year. In return you’ll get your name put on one of the county’s “Keep Gilmer Beautiful” signs. How cool is that? From April 15-30 residents may also participate in “Tire Amnesty.” Non- commercial residents can drop off tires at the Tower Road Convenience Center: 456 Tower Road, Ellijay. For more information on these events and “Keep Gilmer Beautiful” you can find them on Facebook: www.facebook.com/keepgilmerbeautiful or call Jay Zipperman at 706. 273.1474.

It’s hard to talk about the Ellijay Coffeehouse without first meeting Rick Lucas and JoAnn Antonelli this dynamic duo has been a team since 2005 when they met…fell in love and began their extraordinary journey. Rick brews beer and is an amazing photographer his work is displayed throughout the Coffeehouse and his studio is located on their farm just 2 miles from town. Rick’s attention to detail, his ability to capture the depth, texture and color of his subject is what makes his work so beautiful it is often confused as a painting. He prints images on window shades & canvas. To see his portfolio visit his web site at ricklucasimages.com JoAnn is a lifelong serial entrepreneur her history has revolved around being an artist, designer, merchandiser, small business consultant, gardener, numerous start-ups …she is a creator of extraordinary ideas. In 2007 they bought an 18-acre homestead just 2 miles from the Coffeehouse located 16
in historic downtown Ellijay, which became known as ‘The Martyn House’ The plan for this beautiful and remote sanctuary surrounded by lush nature and saturated with eclectic charm was to create a transformative experience. They wanted guests to connect with the earth and its natural food sources so they began by hosting farm-to-table dinners. Their vision included the vibrant local art community which included artist studio tours and retreats. The Martyn House quickly became Rick and JoAnn’s passion; a physical manifestation of their everevolving creative energy. Desiring to spend more time on the property and to immerse themselves in their own creative pursuits Rick and JoAnn shifted their attention toward the untapped potential still left in The Martyn House. While in India for a merchandising photo shoot, JoAnn purchased a luxury-sleeping tent to serve as a guesthouse on the property. This was the catalyst for the reinvention of The Martyn House into a unique Bed and Breakfast; one

where guests could embrace the peace and quiet of nature, while still enjoying all the comforts of home. The luxury sleeping tents provided a glamorous camping experience, where patrons slept in real beds with fine linens, and enjoyed gourmet meals. Today it is known as Glamping. The property soon offered rooms in their 1930’s Farmhouse, a converted barn became an Artist Studios, a workshop became a cottage and they added four luxury sleeping tents all part of the Bed and Breakfast. Often the entire property was reserved. Featured in Southern Living in 2010, and voted 1 of 88 best getaways in the US in 2012, The Martyn House was well on its way to sustainability. The Farm was the inspiration to create a community centric coffeehouse in 2012 when Rick and JoAnn made another bold move and purchased a 1940’s building in historic downtown Ellijay. They spent a year meticulously renovating the property, re-purposing old wood to give the building a APRIL/MAY 2019
warm, rustic nostalgic feeling. When the project was completed, the 5,800 sq. ft. building housed two lofts upstairs, a studio, an art gallery, and a unique coffeehouse unlike any local gathering place in Ellijay. Originally named The Martyn house In Towne today it is simply known as the Ellijay Coffeehouse. The coffeehouse and its unique design have made it anything but simple. There is a cozy lounge with a fireplace and leather sofas, which encourages people to settle in and enjoy visiting with friends or meeting a client. It has become known as the Local Living Room. It’s a specialty coffeehouse serving delicious coffee by the cup, by French press, aero press or pour overs and if you are new to the coffee culture their baristas are experts and can walk you through the world of coffee explaining many of the ways coffee can be served and you won’t want to miss their talent to make beautiful latte art designs. Their open kitchen serves Panini’s made with their own artisan bread & APRIL/MAY 2019
house made spreads served with their yummy pickles. Their quinoa salad is delicious as well as their soups. The pastries include scones and cookies. Be sure and try the parfaits made with their own granola. And on your way out you will definitely want to grab a bag of their beef jerky, a lb. of coffee, bag of granola or jar of pickles! Today The Martyn House is no longer a Bed and Breakfast; it is Rick and JoAnn’s private residence, a sustainable homestead and an Artist Residency. Together they travel … create spaces… inspire community connection and yes they throw a darn good dinner party! They love Ellijay, the Mountains and seek Adventure in their down time whether hiking, kayaking or simply exploring what the world has to offer. ! Rick and JoAnn remind us that life is a journey of constantly creating, live with intention….. believe in the unbelievable!! ACLM

AC LIVING RECIPES Strawberry Basics Strawberries are sugar-sweet, affordable, and omnipresent – even if you can’t pick your own, you’ll find pints and quarts of them at roadside stands and red seas of them in the produce aisle. These berries are delicious on their own, sprinkled with sugar, or in breakfast recipes, desserts, and even salads. In Season: Fresh strawberries are available year-round in many regions of the country, with the peak season from April to June. What to Look For: Buy strawberries that are bright red (with no white or green around the stem), fragrant, and plump, with no soft spots. How to Store: If using right away, it’s best not to refrigerate them. Otherwise, lay the berries flat on a paper-towel-lined plate and refrigerate for up to 2 days. Do not rinse or hull until ready to use.
Strawberry Cake with Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients 1 cup butter 3 cups dices fresh strawberries Whole strawberries for decoration as desired 1 cup sugar 4 egg whites 1 cup strawberry puree (Fresh or 1 cup thawed frozen strawberry & 1-2 tbsp water in blender) 2 teaspoons baking powder 3 cups all purpose flour 4 egg yolks 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 1 tablespoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup white sugar 2 tablespoons flour Pink food coloring *Room temperature ingredients are ESSENTIAL for this recipe. Preparation 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare three 8-in round cake pans. 2. Whip four eggs whites in mixer until soft peaks form. Add 1 cup sugar, 1 tbsp at a time, whipping to maintain soft peaks. Pour whites into large bowl (This was about 5 cups in volume after whipped) and set aside. 3. Without fully cleaning the mixer bowl, cream room temperature butter and 1 cup sugar until fluffy. Add vanilla and almond extract. Add egg yolks one at a time, beating after each addition. APRIL/MAY 2019
4. Sift together 3 cups flour, baking powder, & salt. Alternatively add flour mixture and 1/3 strawberry puree to batter until fully combined. (Flour, 1/3 cup puree, flour, 1/2 cup puree, flour). Add food coloring to achieve desired color. Batter will be thick. You should have 1/3 cup puree LEFT OVER. (This will be brushed on cake later) 5. Fold in egg whites. 6. Coat diced strawberries in 2 tbsp flour and gently add to batter. Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If using two 8-in cake pans, bake for 45-50 minutes. 7. Remove cakes from oven and use a pastry brush to spread remaining strawberry puree over warm cakes. Cool until ready to assemble cakes. TIP: If you want to use all of your strawberry puree IN the cake, feel free to brush cakes with a simple syrup after they have baked. This is a dense cake, so it does need the additional moisture added. Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients 8 oz cream cheese, softened 1 cup butter, softened 4 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon coconut extract 2-3 Tablespoons heavy cream Shredded coconut Preparation 1. Beat cream cheese and butter together. 2. Add in powdered sugar one cup at a time and

beat until creamy. 3. Add the vanilla or coconut extract and heavy cream and beat until smooth. 4. Frost cake and cover with shredded coconut. TIP: Turn mixer on high and let it go for 4 minutes to get some air into the frosting.
Strawberry and Cream Biscuits Ingredients 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon table salt 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold 1 cup chopped very ripe strawberries. Cut strawberries into about 3/8" dice, halving very small berries, quartering medium, and then dicing large berries. 1 cup heavy cream Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. In the bottom of a large bowl whisk flour, baking powder, sugar and salt together. 3. Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles a crumbly meal with small pea-sized bits of butter. 4. Gently toss in strawberries, just to lightly coat in the dry ingredients. 5. Stir in heavy cream gently, just to moisten the dry ingredients but not over work the dough. 6. Knead once or twice in the bowl, to form a WWW.ACLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

somewhat shaggy, but cohesive mass. The dough won’t be even – the key here is to be gentle! 7. Generously flour your counter or work surface. Transfer dough to the counter, generously flour the top and flatten with your hands or a rolling pin. 8. Gently roll or press the dough out to a 3/4 to 1-inch thickness. Cut into 2 1/2-inch circles with a floured biscuit cutter, pressing straight down and not twisting as you cut. 9. Carefully transfer scones to prepared baking sheet, spacing at least two inches apart. You can re-roll the scraps of dough; things will get a bit messy but they will still be perfectly tasty. If you’re so inclined, sprinkle with a little sugar to finish them off. 10. Bake the scones for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden and the juices start to bubble a bit and thicken. Cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack. Serve warm or at room temperature. Makes 16-20.

Gardening with Ace Hardware in Ellijay! Is Your Garden Ready? ACE Hardware in Ellijay is Here to Help You Get Any Type of Garden in Tip Top Shape.
There are gardens and there are gardens: vegetable and flower gardens, some done organically. There are large and small gardens; patio gardens, and container gardens. Everything you’ll need to start can be found at ACE Hardware in Ellijay. They supply everything from tools, to soil preparation, to plants, landscape materials, and even advice. For 20 years, Bob Wright has operated the Garden Center at ACE and he’s there to help gardeners of all levels. He knows his business— and his products— and can make experience backed recommendations based on your needs. Wright suggests starting with a soil test, which can be done at your local University’s Cooperative Extension. Once you’ve determined the condition, APRIL/MAY 2019
you can prepare the soil as needed. ACE carries a wide variety of fertilizers, compost and soil conditioners for any use. While top soil is a good filler, Wright does not recommend that it be used on it’s own. Nature’s Helper Soil Conditioner is good for trees, and shrubs (advice ½ bag per fruit tree). For the smallest of gardens in pots, he suggests that you use potting soil, along with Miracle Grow Moisture control. Trees love mushroom compost. For Organic compost, use one cubic foot per tree. Peat moss is nothing short of a gift for the organic gardener and landscaper. It has amazing water-retention abilities, easily retaining more than 10 times its weight in moisture, and also keeps in essential nutrients. ACE Hardware carries local distributor's fruit trees: eight varieties of apple, four of peach, Bruce plum, and Bartlett pear. Wright says that the fruit trees usually sell out, so get yours early. There’s a large selection of annuals and perennials including herbs, veg-

etables, shrubs, bedding plants, hanging baskets—and one of Bob Wright’s favorites—“toe-ticklers,” plants that are fill-ins between paving stones such as creeping Jenny and creeping Thyme. He also is partial to Coral Bells, Heuchera sanguinea, a perennial plant that lasts through winter and comes in a variety of foliage colors. Wright also suggests using three inches of mulch to keep in moisture and protect roots. ACE Hardware carries Cypress mulch, Pine bark mulch/ nuggets, Red bark mulch/nuggets; one is not considered better than the other, it’s simply up to your design preference. He adds that any colored mulch should hold its color about two years. Whatever your gardening needs, ACE Hardware is there to help. Ellijay Tire & Williams Tire Time to Get Your Vehicles Ready for Those Summer Road Trips. Preventative Maintenance is the Key.
CMYK / .eps
Spring. It’s the time when trees start budding, grass turns green, winter clothes are put away and people start planning those spring and summer vacations! Planning that vacation takes a lot of thought - where to go, when, what to pack, etc. Then the day to leave comes and you can finally load the car and hit the road for some much needed R&R. But did you ever think about making sure your vehicle is also ready to hit the road? Some things to check are fluid levels, wipers, brakes, and tires. Ellijay Tire and Williams Tire checks your fluids when you get an oil change. To get the best wear out of your tires, keep an eye on your tire pressure and they need to be rotated every other oil change (or every 6-8 thousand miles). Not rotating your tires will result in uneven wear and cause them to wear out faster. The mountains are beautiful, but the curves can also wear out your tires faster. Our shop offers a road hazard program that covers rotations, tire repairs and if the tire is unrepairable we will replace it! APRIL/MAY 2019
Air pressure is another important thing to check periodically. Did you know that the correct air pressure for your vehicle is on a sticker on your door frame? You should check the air pressure in your tires every few months. Air gauges aren’t that expensive and can easily fit in a glove box or with your spare tire. And while we’re talking about spare tires, checking the air pressure in your spare is always a good idea! Another good thing about spring is that spring is usually when tire manufacturers start having their rebates! If you’re needing tires, spring is one of the best times to buy them. Not sure if you need tires yet? Check your tread depth with a penny. Hold the penny so that Lincoln’s head is touching the tire. If there is no tread touching Lincoln’s head, then you need to replace your tires. If you’re still not sure, feel free to stop by our store and we will be happy to check them for you! From checking your tire pressure for you (air is always free at Ellijay Tire and Williams Tire!) to doing your alignment, oil changes, and tires, we are always happy to serve you. Feel free to contact us via email at ellijaytirecompany@ gmail.com, call us at 706-635-2322 (Ellijay Tire) or 706-946-2322 (Williams Tire), and check us out online at www.ellijaytire.com. Generators are quickly becoming a must-have for peace of mind, especially as homeowners learn of their affordability and simple installation. History Editor Leslie Barker Thomas Digs Deep Into Our Rich Cultural Past with This Ongoing Series About Our Native Ancestors
The Forming of The Georgia Guard
G
Georgia’s governors had grown paranoid over what was going on inside the Cherokee Nation of Georgia. Prior to the discovery of gold, the US Government had installed Federal Troops to work with The Cherokee Light Guard in protecting the Nation’s properties. The original treaties allowed for the Cherokees to retain their lands and mineral rights, but once gold was discovered in 1827 on Cherokee Nation land, the infiltration of gold seekers ran rampant. The Cherokee Light Guard headed up by Stand Waite, began been attacking all the intruders coming into the Cherokee Nation who did not have permission from the tribe to be there. The Light Guard were burning these trespassers’ crops and houses and stealing their livestock. There were no controls other than to institute measures for expelling these trespassers. As Congress passed the Indian Removal act of 1830, Georgia’s government formed a new Guard, thus replacing the Cherokees’ Light Guard and expelling the Federal Troops from the state, leaving the Cherokee nation without an advocate. The Guard consisted of 60 militia men, who were often referred to as the Georgia Guard (not to be confused with the Georgia Guard renewed during the Civil War) or just the term “militia” in records and letters between representatives of the Cherokee Nation and Georgia’s government. The Georgia Guard were ineffective at maintaining the peace between the Cherokees and the literally thousands of men coming from Tennessee and North Carolina into the Nation with gold fever. Indian Agent Colonel Hugh Lawson Montgomery reported estimations of nearly four 46
thousand white trespassers on Cherokee land by mid-1831. Within six months, the number of white trespassers seeking gold climbed to over seven thousand. Laws against these trespassing squatters’ intrusions were virtually unenforceable. Agents and Guardsmen could arrest a few of them, but there was no entity to enforce the penalties or fines. The trespassers were escorted from the lands, only to return two-fold the next day. In addition to gold, these interlopers were stealing the Cherokee’s horses and livestock. The paperwork battles for removal of the Cherokee intensified. Georgia was prompt to invoke measures to dissolve the sovereignty of the Nation and lay claim to the lands that contained the gold. Dozens of legends enveloped the Nation as they were thought to have hidden vast amounts of gold wealth and would one day return to claim it. Hundreds of maps appeared over successive decades telling of these vast hordes and where they might be found. These maps sold for a hefty price and some of them are still circulating today. Legends contend that most of the mixed-bloods that had been removed west, returned under cover of darkness to retrieve the family treasures. The drama intensified as there were protagonists on both sides of the Georgia government land grab and Indian removal issue. The taking of Cherokee lands involved an assortment of Indian agents, guardsmen, tradesmen, and missionaries and of course dozens of Cherokee Leaders trying to protect their land. Settlers were greatly divided on the issue of removal. Families that had lived in the Cherokee Nation before the Georgia Gold Rush tended to be more supportive of the Cherokee. One reason for the strong bond was the acceptance of them by the tribe. The Cherokee had invited struggling early settlers into the Nation in their time of need, teaching them various trades such as wagon making and blacksmithing. However, in general, Georgians viewed the Cherokee as only somewhat higher on the social level than slaves, but not much. The struggle to remove the Cherokee Nation lasted through three presidents, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. It covered the governorships of five terms, John Forsyth, George Rockingham Gilmer (18291831 and 1837-1839), Wilson Lumpkin, and William Schley. ACLM
