WELCOME TO AC MAGAZINE

Yowza– spring just blew by us here on the mountain! We got more than our share of big thunder, pounding rain and ever-close lightening. Now that my broken ankle is mostly healed and I can hike again, the dogs and I climbed to our favorite big rock to take in the storms. Booming thunder, waging wind and sideways rain so close around us, there’s nothing like it. Luckily for me, Maxine and Billy are always game for my crazy ideas and seemed to enjoy the weather as much as I did. But boy, we sure did get wet! On the other side of that, I took a break and went on a city vacation, visiting friends from my college days at Carnegie-Mellon University who live in NYC. As much as I feel at home on my little mountain, I do miss big city life. Shoe shopping, Indian food, Thai food, the Ramones exhibit at the Queen’s Museum and a Santigold concert– I was pretty busy. Visiting the 911 Memorial for the first time was very moving since the Towers were still standing when I lived there in the early 1980’s. Took a hit of culture shock coming back to reality and Blue Ridge and then scrambling to put together this issue. Contributing to her second issue now is award winning interior designer Cindy Trimble, ASID and the owner of Studio Trimble, Inc. Based here in Blue Ridge where she is NCIDQ certified and a Georgia Registered Interior Designer. Trimble recently accepted the American Society of Interior Designer’s Georgia Chapter Silver Award of Excellence for her design of Chester Brunnenmeyer’s Bar and Grill that was featured in our April May 2016 issue. Congratulations Cindy and welcome to AC Living Magazine! Summertime is here and in this issue we hope you find plenty of things to keep you busy. Ready to build your dream log home? Our cover story, Satterwhite Log Homes gives you a good place to start by visiting their model log home in Ellijay. Six of our local shops give us great ideas to gussy-up our outdoor spaces. Take the whole family to Blue Ridge Mountain Trail Rides at Hell’s Hollow and Adventure Outpost, where you can trail ride, zip line, fish in the pond, or go on wagon ride– take a picnic and spend the whole day. To top that off, we’ve got some cool and peachy summer recipes. Aahhhh. Summer. Fall will be here sooner than you know it, and as always our very popular August/September issue, will have the most complete listing of the area’s fall festivals and fairs. While we think that you shouldn’t miss ANY of our magazines, this one is always a keeper. We sure hope everyone enjoys the summer and our little slice of Appalachian Mountain bliss. See y’all this fall!

If you’ve ever been to Blue Ridge, Georgia, chances are you’ve heard of Toccoa Riverside Restaurant. A legendary eatery established in 1993, Toccoa Riverside Restaurant is a favorite destination for those looking to get an authentic taste of Appalachia. Guests are treated to a one-of-a-kind dining experience, with seating options available inside the cozy dining room or outside under the canopy of trees, just feet from the Toccoa River. After a tragic fire damaged the restaurant in 2012, Toccoa Riverside Restaurant was re-opened in 2013 with a revamped menu and a renewed dedication to providing guests with the highest quality cuisine in the North Georgia Mountains. One of the most popular items on the new menu is the Applewood Smoked Trout, which is lovingly prepared and smoked in-house and served with two sides, hot rolls and plenty of butter. If you love trout but aren’t too keen on the smoke, you can have your fish fried, broiled, crusted with almonds, pecans or stuffed with crab. If you prefer turf over surf, Toccoa Riverside Restaurant also serves some of the best steaks in Georgia, using Certified Black Angus beef which is grilled to perfection however you like. Also, after you’ve had a chance to relax near river with a tasty adult beverage or two, make sure to stick around for dessert. Diners come in droves for Everyone’s Favorite Cobbler, a family recipe handed down from the original owner of the restaurant, made with fresh fruit and served piping hot with a dollop of delectable ice cream. AC LIVING LANDSCAPE & GARDEN
Boxwood Blight Landscape & Garden Editor Kevin Johnson Warns of a New Disease Threatening One of Our Most Beloved Shrubs
T
The Boxwood (Buxus) is considered our oldest garden ornamental. Introduced in the US in the 1600’s, Buxus is extremely hardy, resilient and trouble-free. These attributes earned the English Boxwood top honors, which is why you’ll find this evergreen rubbing elbows with royalty in select palace gardens around England. Boxwoods typically do well in drought situations and require little fertilizer. They have many uses from hedges to individual specimens, they’re also grown in containers, used in topiary and in bonsai gardens. And now one of our favorite plants is in trouble. Boxwood Blight, caused by the fungus, Calonectria pseudonaviculatum (syn. Cylindrocladium pseudonaviculatum and Cylindrocladium buxicola) has been confirmed in multiple commercial and residential landscapes. Often the source of the introductions is unknown. In some cases new boxwood plants already are diseased, in others cases, the disease may be spread from pruning or other garden maintenance operations. Boxwood blight was first identified in the USA in the fall of 2011 in NC and CT. Since then, it has been identified within nurseries and/ or landscapes in numerous states (AL, CT, DE, FL, GA, KS, KY, MA, MD, MO, NC, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, RI, TN, VA, WV) and several Canadian provinces. The disease is spreading to new states each year (FL and WV were added to the list in 2015). Spread is most likely through the movement of infected plants. The disease has been known for over decade in the UK and Europe. Once a plant becomes infected with this pathogen, the disease can be very damaging. The American Boxwood and Dwarf English Boxwood are very susceptible to the disease. Causing rapid defoliation of the leaves, the disease leaves the plant severally damaged or dead. There are no fungicides that can be applied to help this problem once the plant has become infected. Preventative fungicides may work but this approach is not always practical. Boxwood JUNE/JULY 2016
Above Left: Boxwood Blight begins initially with circular tan leaf spots with brown or purple borders. Blackening of the stems is also common. Above Right: A healthy Boxwood. One of the most prized ornamental and foundation plants due to it’s hardiness. Left: Not Boxwood Blight! This is damage from dog urine. Disease identification is key. Blight begins initially with circular tan leaf spots with brown or purple borders. Blackening of the stems is also common. Humid, warmer weather promotes the spread of this disease. This pathogen requires 24-48 hours of leaf wetness to infect the plant. As the disease progresses, the leaves will turn tan and fall off the plant. This disease in readily transferred in many ways because the spores of the pathogen are very sticky and can stick to worker’s tools, clothing, or even animal fur (cats, dogs, rabbits, etc.) that may move through the garden. Once introduced, the disease can be devastating to boxwood in landscapes and nurseries. Here are some tips if you’re concerned about your Boxwoods. • Proper identification is important. If you suspect Boxwood Blight, take a cutting to your county extension agent. They can send a sample to U.G.A. for testing. • Be sure not to introduce this disease through new nursery stock. Be sure the plants that you’re purchasing are disease free. • Don’t allow landscape maintenance companies to prune your plants with contaminated tools.
• Implement a preventative fungicide spray program. • If discovered, remove infected plants and leaf litter from your property. It is recommend that you also remove the soil that the plant was growing in. Fungicide efficacy trials have shown that those containing chlorothalonil (Daconil, Spectro, Concert II) and fludioxonil (Medallion, Palladium) provide the best control. Fungicides containing azoxystrobin (Heritage), pyraclostrobin (Pageant), trifloxystrobin (Compass), and thiophanate methyl (Cleary 3336) provide fair to good preventative control. Spraying after the disease is present will not control it. ACLM Kevin Johnson is the owner of Green Leaf Lawn and Ornamental, LLC, based in Blue Ridge. AC LIVING STYLE & DESIGN
Designing for Living with Pets Style & Design Editor Cindy Trimble Considers Pets to be Just as Important to Clients as Designing for Kids
A
Anyone who has visited my studio knows we love dogs and have met our corgis. My assistant Kit Miracle and I both live and work with our dogs as do many of our clients, friends and business associates. The health benefit of living with pets has gained a lot of attention over the past decade especially as we are all living longer and enjoy the company and benefits of living with pets. Just like designing for living with children, or for someone with special needs, my studio has dedicated a lot of effort on designing for living with pets. For almost 20 years now, scientists have linked patient’s ability to lower their blood pressure to their having 4 legged house mates. Coming home at the end of a day to a wagging tail is a very happy event that is rewarding to both human and pet. But having an animal living in your house should not add more stress to your life because of damage to your furnishings or home. To support our designing for living with pets we search for manufacturers of furnishings, finishes and home products that are pet friendly and machine washable. Most of us baby boomers are living longer, and many of us will see our children grow up and move on leaving our homes for us and our pets to “age in place” together in. Most of my design clients are retired (or soon to be) and have either cats or dogs. They could not imagine life without their pets. So as we begin the design process, some of our first questions relate to how they live with their pets: where do the sleep? Where do they get fed? Where do they go in or out? Pets are just as important to many as their human children and many have pets rather than children! So when building a new home or renovating an existing home, it is critical to integrate the pet “creature comforts” into the design. We have integrated kitty litter boxes in wall closets where there are cat doors to the inside, but the litter boxes are cleaned out in a garage JUNE/JULY 2016
Top: Cindy’s corgi Lucy supervising a very important photo shoot. Left: Bob and Pam Via with their Papillion pups, Higgins and Moby. Below: Randy and Sally Weimer with Rocky and Marco. or outdoor room. We have built in doggy feeding bowls as pull outs in kitchens and built in doggy showers so the humans can wash their doggies more easily. We have a special collection of fabrics, rugs, bed linens and furniture covers that are all machine washable and pet friendly. And when designing laundry and mud rooms, we make sure there are hooks for leashes and a place for wiping off muddy paws. Due to the love and popularity of pets, we have started a category on www.thenewrustic. com just for pet owners that includes all sorts of dog and cat products. From near slaughter, and various forms of abuse, to living out full lives, horses, mini-horses, donkeys, burros, and mules find loving, adoptive homes with people who care. This rescue is happening in north Georgia through the untiring efforts of Equine Advocates of North Georgia, Inc. (EANG), established in 2010, as a charitable non-profit 501c3. Stories abundant with anguish tell the history of these beautiful creatures before their rescue by EANG. Have you ever heard of a Premarin Farm? This secretive industry is mostly located in Canada. Premarin is the commercial name for a compound drug consisting of conjugated estrogens made from pregnant mares urine (prescribed for women to relieve menopausal symptoms—and there are synthetics that are not associated with this cruel industry). The foals are unwanted by products that are sold for meat exported to such countries as Belgium, France, Japan and elsewhere. Fantastic love stories happen because of EANG’s efforts. One such story is this: at six months of age, rescue came to Sweet Georgia Brown, a Belgium Cross (Draft horse and thoroughbred) and 63 other foals, slated for slaughter, which were saved by outbidding meat packing companies in Manitoba,
Above: Sweet Georgia Brown was rescued by EANG from slaughter at four months old with 61 other foals from a Premarin farm in Canada. After months of TLC she was adopted out and became a Georgia State Grand Champion.

Canada. With tender loving care (TLC), she was placed in a paddock with an older, gentle horse until she was old enough to be turned out with other horses. She became a grandchampion jumper in Georgia. EANG advocates for stricter horse protection laws such as the following three of many others (1) Humane Care for equines act code 1981 4-13-1 enforcement, (2) federal law enforcement of 9CFR commercial transportation of Equines to Slaughter, (3) The wild and free-roaming horses and burros act of 1972 enforcement. Such laws help prevent stories like Sweet Georgia Brown’s--and that of Chief, who today is happy living in Ball Ground on pastureland. The 13-year old Appaloosa suffered from osteoarthritis in fetlock and pastern joints, three-legged lame. After investigation for cruelty by the Department of Agriculture, Chief also found rescue with EANG. To see the before and after photos of these abused, neglected, and unwanted horses is amazing. TLC is the major ingredient in their recovery. But often
it also takes thousands of dollars for major surgery to help them, as with Chief. The donations of caring citizens of Georgia help make rescue for them possible. All the rehabilitation work is done at the rescue farm, 2260 Flatbottom Road, in Ball Ground. EANG provides a six-fold protection for equines: rescue, rehab, sanctuary, advocacy, adoption, and education. Lynley Edwards, who works full-time as a paralegal and is founder of the 100-percent volunteer efforts of EANG notes, “We work on advocating with our local congressmen for stonger equine protection laws. We have several compassionate vets and farriers who help with the horses.” She tells that each week feed, hay and medical supplies must be purchased. “We do ongoing fundraisers to pay for these necessities.” Edwards says that EANG does community outreach work at various locations such as Sackett’s. EANG also hosts visitation events for groups to see the handsome rescue animals, “We’ve hosted Girl Scouts, and the Starbucks Community Service Employee Program, and employer/employee events family days at the Ball Ground farm. And we’ve displayed our horses at the north Georgia Fair, with photo opportunities.” WWW.ACLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

We post adoptable horses on our Facebook page, and network with other rescues to match the horse with the best person.” Returning to some of the cruel treatment of equines, Edwards, points out, “People think that when they take their horse to the auction house that it will be sold to some nice family for a child to ride. OUTDOOR SPACES: SUMMER BECKONS IN APPALACHIA
WORDS : ABIGAIL SUMMAR FOR BLONDE ANARCHY
As leaves unfurl on their branches and flowers bloom and blossom, cool breezes temper the hot Southern sunshine. Birds flit between towering pines, maples, and magnolias, while clear mountain creeks crash in sparkling cascades over mossy rocks. Warm weather has finally arrived in Appalachia. Outdoor enjoyment is as Southern as sweet tea and barbecue, and we pride ourselves on creating beautiful outdoor spaces where we can laugh, drink, cook, and entertain. We build lovely patios and gardens, arrange comfortable seating, hoist brightly colored hammocks between trees, hang string lights, and even construct outdoor kitchens for the ultimate grilling experience. Spring and summer mean life itself, and nowhere is this more true than in Appalachia, home to innumerable coolly shaded watering holes, smoky barbecue joints, midnight hoedowns, and illicit distilleries. In short, we have elevated outdoor living to an art form, such a crucial part of our culture that we take it for granted that just about every party, every dinner, every social event from Memorial Day until Labor Day will take place outside. But although a love of outdoor living comes naturally to every true Southerner, we aren’t always clear on how to create the most comfortable, beautiful, and functional spaces. Here are some local businesses that have mastered the craft and are eager to share it with you. Outdoor Living, Indoor Comfort
If there’s one thing Julie Heinsman knows a lot about, it’s how to best enjoy the great outdoors in our Appalachian mountain climate. The owner of Outdoor Living, Indoor Comfort specializes in creating comfortable, clean spaces that stay clean with minimal effort, all year long. With custom-designed outdoor enclosures that have been engineered to withstand everything from rough spring weather to seasonal pollen dumps, Outdoor Living, Indoor Comfort can turn an outdoor porch into a space that has the charm and fresh air appeal of a porch, with the comfort and cleanliness of a living room. Their enclosures are not made of glass, like traditional sunroom panes. Instead they are made of a clear, vinyl-like material that is both strong and easy to clean. And unlike regular glass, it filters UV light, providing an extra level of protection against the sun’s most damaging rays. The panes can be easily removed and cleaned individually, eliminating the need for professional window washers or precarious ladders. In addition to custom porch enclosures, which can be designed to fit virtually any outdoor space, Outdoor Living, Indoor Comfort offers an impressive selection of patio and outdoor furniture. With beautiful, high end pieces in wicker, aluminum, marine grade polymer— which won’t rot, splinter, warp, or fade—and cast iron, they have a look for every style and 20

Revive Us Again
Spring is in the air, with summer quickly approaching, and it’s time to start enjoying the beautiful Appalachian great outdoors. Just as we wish to adorn and decorate our inside environments, we can do the same with our outdoor spaces. One way to do this is with fun folk art. Enter Around Back at Rocky’s Place. This wonderland of outdoor folk art, which dubs itself “the Ultimate Folk Art Gallery,” offers art for yards, patios, decks, and screened porches. Rocky’s Place has metal sculptures created by several different metalsmiths, including Chris “CEB” Beck, Jeffrey Merritt, Tom Touchstone, and Ironman. Collectors and admirers of Chris Beck’s work have seen his current pieces at the major folk art shows around the country, but Rocky’s Place has his early work, which is very primitive and raw. Jeffrey Merritt’s work can be seen not only at Rocky’s, but also around Atlanta’s corporate downtown offices. Tom Touchstone, a gallery favorite and a man of many mediums, includes several ironworks among the gallery’s collection

of his paintings and pottery. And what is an authentic Southern garden without a bottle tree? Rocky’s Place has them, created by Ironman, in a variety of sizes, along with other metal works by this legendary local artist. To decorate a more intimate screened or covered area, there are paintings on tin by John “Cornbread” Anderson, Scott Peppers, Lisa Pirkle, Jason Smith, and John Sperry. Around Back at Rocky’s Place even offers a way to share art with our feathered friends, with a unique birdhouse made from a variety of mediums, wood, clay, or tin. For those who love folk art in all its forms, this one-of-a-kind gallery is a must-see.

When building a family business meant to endure, the strength must come from the foundation up. Making a conscious choice to create a long-lived company is the first step in building a strong foundation. It takes some luck to survive for generations, certainly, but these things don’t happen by accident either. It starts with your intentions. For 42 years, Sam and Travonda Satterwhite have done just that. Here Sam shares his passion for family and his family business, Satterwhite Log Homes. 26

Satterwhite’s Mountain Laurel model in Ellijay is one of the finest in the log home industry. But the grand opening in April 2008 came at a very difficult time.
A
After a career in log homes that goes back 42 years (so far!), I find myself reflecting back a lot and considering more and more on the things that really matter. Faith, family, friendships, integrity, patriotism, obligations. These are on my short list. Like most folks, I hope to leave a family (and a family business) well grounded in the things that matter. As a grandfather, it is a fervent desire that the grandkids grow up with pride instead of shame in their family and their family business. A family business like ours expands our family, not by blood, but by relationships. We share each other’s joys, births, birthdays, graduations, and all the happy milestones. We also share the sad times with each other. Customers become close friends and so the family grows. Our business and family began back in the mid-seventies. The smartest thing I ever did was marrying my first secretary, Travonda. Maybe the second smartest was to stay with my instincts about our fledgling log home company. We began by using dry logs to build log homes because it made sense then. It has continued to make sense for all these four-plus decades. We are a major producer of house logs and lumber products from dead-standing timber, timber killed from bark beetle epidemics in high elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Because of economies of scale, lighter shipping weights, and our business philosophy, we can ship across the entire country and still be extremely price competitive with the rest of the log home and lumber industry. Satterwhite Log Homes is the most radical company in our industry when it comes to moisture content. At our mill in Utah, every log destined to become part of a log wall is oriented through the mill top first. We do this so that the wettest end, the butt, is always on the same end through the entire process. That way the moisture testing station always checks the wettest end of each piece. And every timber sawed is tested, not every JUNE/JULY 2016
other, not a random sample. Every piece is moisture tested. And if it is too high, it is sent back through the mill to be sawn into 1, 2, or 3" thick lumber so that it will never have a chance to be a house log. What difference does that make to a homeowner or builder in the Blue Ridge Mountains? It means our logs move less and are more stable in your log home, when it’s built and for the future of the families that live in it. Something we are very proud of is that, because of our dry logs and how our houses go together, we have never yet had one of our homes blown down or the log walls pulled apart by tornado or hurricanes. Consider that most of our homes are in “tornado alley,” (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas & Missouri), and have survived up to F5 storms, so you can rest easy that they are solid and strong. Back in the eighties I traveled the southeast frequently calling on builders and other log home companies we sold logs and lumber to, and I fell in love with North Georgia and the entire southern Appalachian region. I wondered many times how my family could leave Pine Mountain Georgia in 1856 to go to Texas. Many of my cousins headed back East to fight in the war between the States, going back to their new home of Texas afterward. Our family and family business has been blessed beyond measure for all these years in spite of dumb things I do. I picked the worst possible time to stake our claim in Ellijay in 2006. North Georgia, and Ellijay in particular, was a major hub of log home activity. We never feared competition, rather they feared us, and we were itching to compete when we came. We just didn’t know the boom was about to bust when we opened our new facility in April ‘08! Timing could not have been worse yet many in our business said we had built the best, most beautiful office and model east of the Mississippi. Through hardheaded determination we held on through some tough times, times that sank most of our competition. Without our dedicated

When the market turned, repos sold, and folks started building again, we were ready! Having experienced bad times, our company family has been humbled, and appreciates our customers more than we ever have. That humbling has made me a better person. I say “Thank You” to folks for buying a 2x4 just like I do to someone who spends a million dollars. As our business began to improve in the last two years, we have had low points, too. Last November, our close friend and Georgia manager, Don Estes, was taken by cancer. We have missed him tremendously, but Ron Lomonaco stepped up and is doing an exemplary job running “Satterwhite East.” Ron was an outstanding young man when we first ran into him, a friendly, happy young builder who was drawn to our log homes. His first assignment was to go (at age 22!) to New Zealand to train “Kiwis” to build our log homes. Afterwards, Ron came to our sales team and what better person to guide you through the building process than one who knows the JUNE/JULY 2016
project and process from the ground up? Ron and his sweet wife Britney are Ellijay natives who know the area well. Their roots run deep. To round out our Georgia family, Cindy Key, our office manager, will meet you in our Ellijay office. Cindy is friendly, helpful, professional, and her winning smile will put you at ease as soon as you come through the door. Whether it’s around the office, loading lumber on your truck, or delivering to your jobsite, James Aaron will always greet you with a smile, and a booming voice. This bear of a man makes everybody comfortable. He and I call each other “cousin”, and even if we aren’t, we ought to be! Recently joining our group is Ron Cheslock. Just like us, he and wife Amy fell in love with the mountains, and built a Satterwhite log home near Ellijay, moving from Roswell. A Navy veteran, he brings a client’s perspective to our team. Travonda and I are so fortunate to have such a great group of people in our company family, whether they are in Texas, Utah, or Georgia! Family Matters! ACLM

Blissfully Sweet Peaches a Summer Peach Galette Filling Ingredients 1 lb peaches, about 4 medium, not overly ripe 1/4 cup sugar 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract 1/2 Tbsp butter Crust Ingredients 1 1/4 cup flour 1 1/2 tsp sugar 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup very cold butter (Chill the butter in the freezer for at least 20 minutes) 4 to 6 Tbsp ice water 1 egg Sprinkling of sugar and ginger for the crust Dough Preparation In a food processor with the blade attachment, pulse 1¼ cups flour, 1½ tsp sugar and ½ tsp salt until well mixed. Cut cold butter into small (1/2-inch) cubes and add it to the food processor. Push the pulse button 8 times. Your butter should become pea-sized. Add ice water 1 Tbsp at a time and pulse between each addition. Your dough should be ready when it just begins to clump. I used 5 Tbsp of ice water. Form the dough into a disk. Don’t overwork it, just pat it into a disk shape, dust with flour on all sides and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 45 minutes to 1 hour then Preheat the oven to 425°F. Filling Preparation In a small bowl, beat the egg and set aside. Slice peaches into ½” thick slices. Place peaches in a medium bowl and sprinkle with flour, sugar, ginger and vanilla. Stir gently with a spatula just until combined. Discard any excess juices from the peaches, or your galette may overflow. JUNE/JULY 2016

Fold the edges of the gallette up and over the peaches, pinching the overlapping edges together to form a nice seal. Try to patch up any cracks in the dough. Brush the crust with beaten egg and sprinkle with ginger and sugar. Bake for 18-22 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the peach juices are syrupy. Let sit 15 minutes before serving. so deep in nature that for a while, the trail’s attendants enjoyed the company of a curious bear who would sit in the trees and enjoy the fresh air with his human friends. At Blue Ridge Mountain Trail Rides, friendship, hospitality and a love for the great outdoors are all a huge part of a mission and passion for horseback riding. Join the trail guides as they guide you through a variety of relaxing rides. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert; want a short trip or an all day adventure, our guides are sure to take great care of you. No matter who you APPALACHIAN COUNTRY LIVING
are, big or small, rookie or pro, Blue Ridge Mountain Trails at Hells Hollow will make sure you feel safe and relaxed. Owner of the trails, Wade Whelchel couldn’t be more thrilled with the success and popularity of the trails. Having purchased the business in the 1990’s, Wade has not only built the business; he has also built a warm reputation to go along with it. When Wade found the barn years ago, it was in great need of repair. Wade saw the potential and poured his heart into making the trails what they are today, a place for individuals and families to escape, relax and have a great time. In fact, the trails have expanded to bring more welcome to their younger guests. Wade explains, “We’ve been working toward family rides.” For the enjoyment of younger children, the trails now offer a PonyGo-Round. Kids will absolutely love their first riding experience. It is also great exposure which may enable them to grow into more experienced riders. Along with the trails and pony rides, WWW.ACLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

While picnicking in the Hollow, little ones can try their hand at barb less fishing in the pond where they can catch and release sun brim or catfish. Or simply feed the fish, kids absolutely love watching the beautiful fish leap up and out of the water to grab the food. At the trails, every animal is respected and cherished. The horses on the property are very well cared for and loved. All the attendants believe the relationships with the horses have a major impact on each guest’s experience. The barn manager explains, “We go the extra mile. We show the horses love, and we get a loving attitude in return.” Because the horses are so happy and well cared for, they can be knowledgeably matched with a rider. Classic OPTION FOR TRANSPORTATION THE
IN NORTH GEORGIA
O
WORDS: RAY HIGGENBOTHAM PHOTOS: BLUE RIDGE MEDIA GROUP
One of the most sought-after destinations in Georgia lies just an hour and a half north of Atlanta, where verdant pastures lie atop rolling hills and warm smiles are as abundant as trout in the Toccoa River. Often called the gem of North Georgia, Blue Ridge has plenty of exciting activities to experience that the whole family will love. Trouble is, driving to all of your destinations can be a hassle. The solution? Classic Transportation and Tours, the premiere shuttle service in North Georgia and the Tri-State area. Classic Transportation and Tours is the brainchild of David Hopes, who opened for business in 2001. It was during a weekend retreat as a Senior Auditor for a Fortune 500 company that he came to North Georgia for the first time in 1993. David fell in love with the area almost immediately, and decided to make Mineral Bluff his home. As a new resident Mr. Hopes became 38
an important part of the community as a supporter of higher education for adults, and was an instructor with the Fannin Literacy Action Group (FLAG Adult Education) for eleven years. He also served on the Board of Directors as Treasurer, and helped set up the Hopes-Peck-Meckel Trust to help GED applicants pay for exam fees. Unlike run-of-the-mill taxi cabs, David’s fleet of vehicles range from limousine vans to party buses that are equipped with air conditioning and are always smoke-free. Comfort and convenience come standard, but it’s Classic Transportation’s dedication to safety that sets it apart from similar businesses. “Client safety is top priority, and preventive maintenance is performed on our vehicles by a certified garage. We drive defensively and stay within five miles of the speed limits,” Hopes said after I asked him about his business. “Our drivers have to have two years of professional driving experience. Our

commercial insurance has to review their driving history before adding them to our policy. They are backgrounded and of course given a driving test and extensive training.” Often times David will go out of his way to accommodate clients out of the good of his heart, as well. “We try to go the extra mile for our clients with early morning as well as late night transports. We work with a local church-based organization to get displaced individuals in Atlanta transportation home at discounted rates,” said Hopes. Classic Transportation specializes in shuttle runs for a number of different events. One of the most popular reasons clients call David and his crew is for transportation during weddings. They offer premuim service to shuttle your guests to and from any venuew in the area. Let’s face it – the last thing on your mind leading up to your wedding is how your family and friends will get to and from your JUNE/JULY 2016

history of indian georgia
– Educated Cherokees
History Editor Leslie Barker Thomas Digs Deep Into The Rich and Exciting Cultural Past with This Ongoing Series About Our Native Ancestors
G
Galigina/Kilakeena or Buck Watie, was born in Pine Log Georgia in about 1800. Buck’s parents were David Uwati (Watie) a Cherokee, and Susanna Reese a mixed blood Cherokee. Buck Watie was also a nephew of Major Ridge– a prominent leader of the Cherokee Nation. Buck was educated at Spring Place by the Salem Moravians who established the Spring Place Mission in northwest Georgia, near Chatsworth. During these vibrant years some of its students were the offspring of Cherokee leaders, who believed that the best way for the Cherokees to preserve their independent homeland was to create an educated elite class who could lead the efforts of the Cherokee Nation and fight to resist the persistent encroachment on their lands and resources. The Moravians took Watie to be a worthy student and convinced his family to send him east to Cornwall, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) school for higher learning in Connecticut to continue his education. While there, he visited with many high political persons including former presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. He also met Elias Boudinot who at one time was a high official in the United States government, holding the office of president for a year prior to the election of George Washington. Boudinot had found Buck Watie likeable and pledged him financial support to complete his education. In appreciation for the scholarship, Buck took his benefactor, Elias Boudinot’s name as his own. Buck, now Elias met Harriet Gold through the Foreign Mission School in 1818. Harriet Ruggles Gold 1805-1836 was the youngest of fourteen children of Colonel Benjamin and Eleanor Gold in Cornwall Connecticut. 46
Colonel Gold was a representative to the General Assembly and was frequently involved with governmental affairs in addition to being a deacon in the local ministry of the Foreign Mission school. Therefore Indian students were frequent visitors to the Gold household. Elias and Harriet’s engagement came amid a scandalous protestation over another mixed relationship between Elias’ cousin John Ridge and Sarah Bird Northup in 1825. Together these two women created a national racist scandal for marrying “savage Indians.” Harriet’s brother even burned her in effigy and she was forced to hide in the house from an angry crowd at one point. Harriet and Elias married in the Gold home in 1826 and returned to the Cherokee Nation of Georgia where they took up residence at New Echota. Harriet wrote her sister Flora that she never regretted her choice and loved her devoted husband for all the blessings they shared. Together they had six children. New Echota had been set as the nation’s capital and Elias soon found favor with missionary Samuel Worcester. Together they brought about the newspaper known as the Cherokee Phoenix, whereby information was written in both the Cherokee and English languages and disseminated to the nation’s peoples as well as supporters who lived in the eastern states. Boudinot believed strongly that the preservation of his people lay in the corporation and education of the group as a whole. He expressed this in a letter in the 1820’s “As long as we continue as a people in a body, with our internal regulations, we can continue to improve in civilization and respectability”. His honesty and integrity were to a fault as he tried to keep supporters up to date on the atrocities that his peoples were facing day in and day out. However his opinions supporting the Indian removal were at odds with those held by the majority of the Nation, including the General Council. He resigned as editor of the Phoenix in August 1832 but continued to take an active role in the removal crisis and even printed a pamphlet attacking anti-removal chief John Ross.

After Harriet’s death in 1836 Elias migrated with his children to Indian Territory. He became part of the Treaty Party and ultimately signed the New Echota Treaty (1835), which required the Cherokees to relinquish all remaining land east of the Mississippi River and led to their forced removal to a territory in present-day Oklahoma. Soon after moving west with his family in 1839, Boudinot and two other treaty signers (his uncle Major Ridge and cousin John Ridge) were attacked and stabbed to death in June of 1839 by members of the Ross National Party. The children went to live in Connecticut with their grandparents. Boudinot was inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame in 2005.
