Hey- so what happened to spring? Here in the north Georgia mountains we went from freezing to over 90 degrees in record speed. One day we had snow, the next day we were all wearing shorts!

Azeleas, Forsythia and Wisteria were blossoming early– so beautiful. Three days later–bam– another freeze that killed all of those lovely blooms. Kinda put a crimp in our otherwise glorious mountain springtime.

June and July brings the full greening of trees and weather warm enough for a float down the river. Kids get out of school and “summer locals” arrive to enjoy the Maxine and Billy hanging out mountain air. Our quaint small towns with their pals at the Blue Ridge Brewery. Joanne is Maxine’s swell with the tourism which makes favorite. And, no, they’re not our economy thrive. Dowtown Historic begging– not MY dogs!

Districts host 4th of July parades, fireworks and picnics serving up good old fashioned Americana. It’s no wonder the north Georgia mountains are so popular.

Summer is also when we start on those cabin and home projects. It’s the time of year when we like to make our summer living easy. In this issue you’ll find some good ideas for upgrading your outdoor spaces. Adding new porch screening, porch flooring or railings will surely spruce things up. Replacing your old patio furnture with new bright and fun– or cush and comfy– pieces can be transformative. There’s even great deals on generators to keep you up and running during sumer thunderstorms. Benton MacKaye Trail Association Experience Hiking the Road Less Traveled This Summer with the Benton MacKaye Trail Association

I

It’s no secret that there are gorgeous, scenic views around almost any bend in the north Georgia Mountains. Amazing vistas, towering and flowering trees, mountain-fed streams, cascading waterfalls and lovely wildflowers await those who choose to get out and experience nature’s wonder.

Each season the Benton MacKaye Trail offers its own unique opportunity for hikers to enjoy the diverse scenery of the mountains. In winter there are many mild hiking days, and with the leaves gone from the trees, one can enjoy the widesweeping panoramas and spectacular long-range views. Spring and early summer are peak times to see an abundance of colorful wildflowers, rhododendrons and flowering trees. And only by hiking in the fall, can you witness up close and personal the vivid red, yellow and gold leaves that adorn the autumn trees.

But how do you learn about these places? The Benton MacKaye Trail Association (BMTA), founded in 1980 is here to help. Not only does the BMTA maintain the trails, offer trail guides and maps for those wanting to explore the BMT on their own, but organized hikes are available as well. The best way to optimize your experience and feel comfortable being in the woods is to hike the trails with other like-minded people. If you ever wanted to start exploring the beautiful mountains in this area, join one of the monthly group hikes. Most of the hikes are considered easy to moderate and upcoming hikes are listed on the website BMTA Activities Calendar page.

The BMT more closely follows Benton MacKaye’s original proposed routing for the southern portion of the Appalachian Trail and is considered a more natural and wild trail, with less foot traffic than the Appalachian Trail. On many sections of the trail, one may hike all day or even several days and never see another hiker. Those that hike the BMT say they like the more remote and primitive feel and the challenge of hiking in these conditions. That said, persons venturing out on remote sections of the trail should be exJUNE/JULY 2018

Regulations require that no blazes be allowed in the wilderness areas.

BMTA, a nonprofit 501c3 all-volunteer organization dedicated to the maintenance and preservation on the Benton MacKaye Trail. The members’ tireless efforts are not only appreciated by those that use the trail, but the Association has been endorsed by the National Park Service and three National Forests. Volunteers are always in high demand as the needed work is constant.

They have been fortunate to have Boy Scouts, Youth Conservation Corps, Trout Unlimited and other organizations supplement their member volunteers. With their help, the BMTA has been able to accelerate completion of many projects over the years.

As with most trail organizations, the BMTA is comprised of a volunteer group of trail maintainers and avid hikers who are dedicated to “leaving a footpath for generations to follow.”

Maintaining the trail to ensure that it is sustainable, ecologically sound and consistently in APPALACHIAN COUNTRY LIVING

the best possible shape to accommodate those that seek to enjoy hiking its trails takes constant vigilance and hard work. The Association relies on the generosity of volunteers to keep the trails clear of fallen trees and other debris, rerouting trails as necessary and rebuilding sections of the trail as conditions dictate. If you are a hiker or outdoorsperson who would like to give something back to the wilderness resource, one of the best ways to contribute is by attending the monthly work trips. It’s not all work and can be very rewarding.

Another option is becoming a Section Maintainer by adopting a length of trail. This requires a higher level of commitment - approximately 12 hours work per year per mile. Yet another way is available to any who are willing to tackle high-priority items, such as large blowdowns, by joining the Quick-Response Crew.

Becoming a member, assisting with administrative needs, serving on the BMTA board of directors, and/or making a financial donation are all ways in which you can lend a hand. It’s easy to join and when you keep your membership current, you’re helping us maintain and improve the trail. Lastly, donations can be targeted specifically toward trail maintenance. The BMTA heartily welcomes your help. Bagworms Can Ruin Your Summer Landscape & Garden Editor Kevin Johnson Shares Three Ways to Control This Perennial Pest

Years ago when I was just getting started in the green industry, I noticed a Blue Spruce standing dead on a property which we cared for. All that was left was what appeared to be small pine cones hanging from the limbs of the dead tree. Under closer examination we discovered that they were not Blue Spruce cones, but the cone-shaped bags of a pesky caterpillar called bagworms.

Bagworms, Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis (Haworth), not to be confused with the Eastern Tent Caterpillar, are a type of caterpillar that feed on many evergreen shrubs, especially conifers such as arborvitae, juniper, pine, spruce, and many other evergreen species, including Leyland cypress. It also attacks certain deciduous trees such as black locust, honeylocust, and sycamore.

Bagworms are identified by the bag or case the caterpillar forms, which they hang from their host plant. The bag is made of silk and foliage from the host plant. The foliage is woven into the silk bag and helps disguise this clever caterpillar. As the caterpillar matures the bags will increase in size from 30-50 mm long.

The spread of the bagworm is slow since adult females are unable to fly and never leave the bag.

She is worm-like lacking eyes, wings, legs, and a mouthpart. The male is black and moth-like with transparent wings.

Females lay 500-1000 eggs in each bag during the fall. Their ability to produce this many eggs can be deadly to the host plant.

Eggs hatch in late spring or early summer. The larva crawl out of the bags and feed on the host plant for several weeks. Some plants can handle defoliation while others will die. The larva then pupate for roughly 4 weeks at which time the males crawl out of their bags and find females to continue their life cycle.

Keep in mind that bagworms are a perennial pest, year-round vigilance will help keep them from destroying your trees and shrubs. Late spring and early summer is a good time to get ahead of the game.

There are three means of controlling these perennial pests.

If you notice your prized evergreen tree is suffering, at the same time there are peculiar cones hanging from the branches, you may have bagworms. ACLM

While I was supervising the ground department at Y.H.C., I had the crew remove bagworms by hand from a prized Blue Spruce in the presidential walkway. Pick off the bags during the winter and destroy them. This must be done before the eggs hatch in June. When too many plants are involved, to make hand picking practical, sprays are in order.

Bacillus thuringiensis, often called Bt, is a type of bacteria that only kills certain insects and does not affect humans or animals. Bt must be applied between mid-June and mid-July because it works well only on young bagworms.

Commercially available under the following common brand names: Dipel, Thuricide, and others, Many of these brands are sold in local hardware stores and garden centers.

Chemical

If chemical control is absolutely necessary, a registered insecticide should provide control if applied thoroughly to all infested plant foliage after July 15. Check the label on the pesticide to be sure bagworm and the type of plant you wish to spray are listed. Pesticides are poisonous. Read and follow directions and safety precautions on labels. Bunking Up and Down Style & Design Editor Cindy Trimble Offers Ideas on How Custom Designed Bunk Beds Can Make Cabin Life Easier There are many things to consider when adding bunk beds to your cabin. With store bought bunks adults hit their heads and ladders can be dangerous. There’s often no storage or a place to charge your phone, let alone pug in your tablet– and very little privacy. Custom bunks can easily solve these problems!

Bunk beds in homes, especially 2nd or rental homes have been popular for years to help create more sleeping areas in beds (not on pull out sofas) for guests. We have helped clients maximize sleeping arrangements and storage in so many different situations and conditions. There are advantages and disadvantages with bunk beds that everyone who has slept in one or made one up knows about. Bunk beds can add interest to a room, can be very artistic – even a focal point.

And when well designed, they can be very inviting for guests.

However, there can be challenges that have to be addressed. They can be difficult to make up, especially on the top bunk. Many bunk beds, especially the freestanding, store bought ones do not have enough head room between the top and bottom bunks, so adults or taller people will bump their heads on the bottom of the upper bunk when they sit up. Also, filling rooms with bunk beds does not leave a lot of extra wall space for storage furniture, which is desperately needed when a room is going to hold a larger number of guests. And the difficulty to climb to the top bunk in some bunks have made that aspect dangerous for adults because ladders and steep steps can be difficult and dangerous to use, especially in the dark.

We have custom designed many bunk beds over the past few years to help make living with bunks easier and to maximize sleeping capacities and storage. Bunk beds can be designed to fit in very small spaces. Our custom designs have safer and easier to navigate ladders (or steps) making them easier to climb and much safer. We also allow for more space between the bunks, so adults can sit up on the lower bunk and not hit their head. Incorporating larger size beds, such as double or queen size, many times on the lower bunk, allows larger people, couples or adults more comfort than the typical twin bed size.

Bunk beds can be detailed in so many ways.

They can be totally open, they can be built into a niche making them more private. We have added curtains in many designs to maximize privacy. Every inch in and around the bunk beds are designed for storage, whether a niche inside the bunk with a light and electrical outlet for phone charging and to place a water bottle.

To help simplify the making up dilemma, some clients prefer to use sleeping bags on the upper bed. There are several companies making sheet sleeves, that are like sleeping bags specifically for bunks. These do help simplify making up the top bunks.

You Do! Vegetable Curry with Spiced Rice and Raita

This versatile dish will spice up any summer occasion.

Vegetable Curry Ingredients 2” piece of fresh ginger finely diced 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp turmeric ½ tsp cayenne pepper or 2 fresh hot peppers Salt to taste 4 cups assorted fresh vegetables chopped (can use squash, pumpkin, potatoes or whatever is to hand) 1 cup vegetable broth ¼ cup cashews or peanuts 1 cup plain Greek yogurt JUNE/JULY 2018

Preparation Saute ginger and peppers until browned.

Add cumin, turmeric and stir for ½ a minute.

Add chopped vegetables and stir.

Add broth and simmer covered until vegetables are tender (about 10 minutes.

When tender add yogurt and nuts and heat through. Serves 4-6 people.

Vegans replace yogurt with canned or fresh chopped tomatoes.

Spiced Rice The perfect match for vegetable curry.

Add cinnamon and raisins.

Raita A great side dish especially if you make the curry hot.

Ingredients 1 large cucumber ½ cup plain Greek or regular yogurt Preparation Peel and de-seed cucumber. Chop into small pieces. Add enough yogurt to cover fully. Add salt to taste.

Nightshade Summertime Eggplant Sandwich Who needs bread when you have some gorgeous eggplants from your garden?

Ingredients ½ c all purpose flour 2 large eggs beaten 1cup panko bread crumbs 1 medium eggplant cut into ½ inch thick rounds 30

½ cup canola oil ½ tsp Kosher salt 4 leaves romaine lettuce 2 medium tomatoes sliced 4 oz goat cheese ½ cup fresh basil Preparation Place flour eggs and panko in separate shallow bowls. Dip eggplant in flour, then eggs and finally panko. Press panko in so that panko sticks to the eggplant.

Heat half the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium high heat.

Cook half the egg plant until golden brown and crisp – 2 to 3 minutes on a side. Transfer to paper towel or newspaper lined plate. Wipe out the skillet and repeat with remaining oil and eggplant.

Sprinkle with ½ tsp salt.

Layer eggplant, lettuce, tomatoes, basil and goat cheese to form sandwiches with eggplant on the top and bottom of each stack. Knife and fork optional!

Soulful Summer Black-eyed Pea Salad

The perfect cold summer salad for those oh-so-hot southern days.

Salad Ingredients 1 ½ Cup cooked black-eyes peas (1 15 ounce can) drained and rinsed ¾ Cup chopped green pepper ¾ Cup chopped celery ¼ Cup chopped sweet onion ½ Cup chopped red onion Dressing Ingredients ¼ Cup Vegetable oil ¼ Cup Sugar 2 Tbsp Cider Vinegar 1 Clove garlic, minced ½ tsp salt ½ tsp pepper ½ tsp hot sauce Preparation In a large bowl combine salad ingredients. In a small bowl combine dressing ingredients. Pour dressing over salad ingredients and toss.

Refrigerate over night.

Makes 5 1/2 cup servings.

Country Creamed New Potatoes & Green Beans

growing up, so mom was forever thinking of new ways to use the things from the garden. This is her recipe and my sister and I always loved it. Delicious, fresh and so country!

Ingredients New potatoes Green beans 3 tbsp butter 3 tbsp flour Milk as needed Salt & pepper to taste

A summer favorite here in the south, what a great dish to serve at your backyard barbeque party.

Delicious Down-Home Corn & Peach Salad

Preparation Scrub new potatoes and cook in salted water until tender.

Steam new green beans whole or broken in two.

In a skillet, make a roux for a white sauce. Melt three tablespoons of butter and stir in three tablespoons of flour.

Mix together and cook over medium heat, letting the roux bubble, but not brown. When it is very thick, start to slowly add milk to thin it out and make a white sauce.

Pour the white sauce over the beans and potatoes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Mix and cook together for a few minutes before serving.

On a hot and humid southern evening this delicious salad can be a healthy side or a served as a cool dinner entree.

Ingredients ¼ Cup Orange juice 2 Tbsp lemon or lime juice 1 Tbsp honey 1 ½ Tbsp thyme leaves ½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground garlic ½ tsp salt 1/8 tsp ground red pepper 2 Cups cubed peaches (or nectarines) 2 Cups corn (3 ears fresh corn, grilled and cut from the cob) 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed ¼ Cup finely chopped celery

Farm Fresh, Authentic Tomato Sauce

Wondering what to do with all of those tomatoes? Look no further.

Ingredients 3 1/2 pounds of garden tomatoes 2-3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 small or 1/2 large onion, diced 1 medium carrot, diced 1-2 cloves garlic, chopped salt and pepper to taste 1-2 sprigs thyme 1-2 stems of parsley 1-2 dried bay leaves fresh basil to taste Preparation Have a pan of boiling water and a large bowl of ice water prepared. Cut an X into the bottom of each tomato, lower it with a slotted spoon into the boiling water until the peel begins to pull away from the flesh, about 20 seconds.

Remove tomato from boiling water and place in ice water until cool enough to handle. Remove skin, core tomato and squeeze to remove seeds. When all tomatoes are peeled, cored and seeded, crush them with your fingers.

Heat a heavy bottomed deep saucepan on medium heat. Add olive oil, onions and carrot. Cook until onions are translucent. Add garlic and cook until fragrant. Add tomatoes, bay leaf and thyme. Simmer on low for about 30 minutes or until thick, adding basil near the end of cooking time.

Cool slightly, remove bay leaf, parsley and thyme stems.

Process in batches in a food processor or food mill. Use for any pasta or pizza dish calling for Italian tomato sauce.

Makes 5-6 cups. If not using immediately, cool completely and store in refrigerator for 3-4 days or freeze in 1 or 2 cup containers for about 3 months.

Spinach, Mushroom, Tomato and Goat Cheese Frittata

Breakfast, brunch, lunch or a quick dinner. Use your local farm fresh eggs and you’ve got a winner.

Ingredients 1 tablespoon butter 1 shallot, diced 1 clove garlic, minced 8 oz. mushrooms, sliced 8 oz. cherry or grape tomatoes, halved 2 cups, packed, fresh baby spinach salt, pepper, and cayenne to taste 6 eggs 6 tablespoons milk Preparation Preheat oven to 400ºF. Use an oven-safe skillet and heat it on stove top to medium. Add butter and shallot and cook briefly.

Add garlic, then mushrooms, salt to taste– stir once. Cook without stirring until mushrooms are brown before stirring again.

Add tomatoes and then spinach and cook until spinach wilts.

Meanwhile, whisk the eggs and milk in a separate bowl until they are fluffy, adding about 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of black and cayenne pepper if desired.

Making sure first that the vegetables are evenly distributed in the pan, pour the egg mixture over and do not stir. Drop goat cheese by teaspoons throughout the pan.

Transfer pan to the oven and bake until cooked through, about 15 minutes. Serves 4-6.

T

This year, 2018, is the 180th year representing the Removal of the Cherokee from Georgia.

There’s a time line of events that precipitated the events leading up to this holocaust of our Native American ancestors. Dozens of books have been written to convey the historical trauma, the monumental volumes of shameful and regrettable losses imposed upon the Cherokees. It’s often a story of a suffering of a banished peoples, so we can develop an “understanding (of ) the past so that we can create a better, more equitable future, (this) is what the study of history is all about.” Dwight T. Pitcaithley, chief historianof the National Park Service 1976-2005.

Professor Andrew Denson, Western Carolina University attests in his writings “Acknowledging a history of injustice suggests we are better now”… we reassure ourselves that we will not commit similar mistakes in the present. Since the beginning of colonialization of America, there had been a conflict of effort to civilize the Indians of this continent. The early 18th century saw the British efforts to use the Indians for their own purposes in making the America a profitable venture. “It is always easier to destroy than to make over; and the early colonists were too busy with their own struggle for existence to pay heed to the welfare of those whom they regarded as foes.” John Daniel Hammerer 1740.

We can’t say it’s an anniversary nor even a celebration, more of a memorial to those who once walked the same pathways through our state of Georgia and tilled the same soil. The Revolutionary War 1775-1784 saw the Indians siding with the British in hopes of having the land that had been ceded returned. They knew nothing of ownership at the time when the foreign nations began confiscating their lands. The land had a soul. It had been lent to the Indians

to tend and care for it for all time. Land was “owned” in common with the tribe, with the clans. One of the first efforts from the intruders was to convey to the Indians the wonders of individual ownership at any cost.

The timeline is begun with a series of treaties for the ceding of vast amounts of lands.

Then moving the Indians further inland from the coasts to the frontiers. By 1802, after the loss of the Revolutionary War and basically the punishment for Georgia’s plight with the British, Georgia’s vast territory to the Mississippi River was divided out into states. America divided out ten million acres for the Cherokees and twenty million for the Creeks, the majority being in the now state of Georgia. Georgia protested the Federal Government and wanted the Indians moved west of the Mississippi.

The Federal Government disputed Georgia’s claim to the land, but in getting them to quit their claim to it, Thomas Jefferson secretly promised that the Federal Government would extinguish title to Cherokee lands within the reserved limits of Georgia as soon as it could be done. It took thirty-six years for this compact between the government and the state to come to fruition through a series of eminent domain claims.

Georgia became the guardian of the Indians within her boundaries. Georgia’s first act was the removal of the Creeks in 1827 from the state, which could not have happened soon enough.

Georgia was dismayed that the Cherokees became so successful in their endeavors to become civilized. They developed a government similar to that of the American government. They had a force keeping arm, The Light Guard, in conjunction with the federal government. They worked to keep intruders out of their Cherokee Nation East. Georgia evicted the federal troops

The State striped the Cherokees of any and all rights and implemented Georgia laws within the Cherokees’ boundaries.

The State put deadlines on removal of the Indians, and as each deadline passed without much happening, Georgia forced the issue with the federals to carry out the removal with the illegal treaties of 1830 and 1835 to speed up the process. The 1835 census estimated that only 5,000 had gone west. By the end of 1837 only 1500 more had joined their brethren in the west. On May 23, 1838 the infuriated Georgia government began in earnest to round up the remaining Indians. Troops showed up at the homes of the individuals with bayonets glistening, while families sat down to dinner.

The stories are horrific when told– of the blind and elderly left to fend for themselves. Of children playing in the fields beyond the sight of their parents, left to die from neglect. Of livestock left behind with no care. Of beatings and untold atrocities to women and children.

In three weeks’ time, most all had been removed beyond the Georgia state boundaries.

Although the government had promised physicians the majority were dentists with little or no knowledge of how to treat dysentery, births, miscarriages, whooping cough, or heat stroke.

Drs. Jordan and Lyde reported upwards of 1600 of their wards were sick and requested assistance of at least one more doctor, in a letter dated July 22, 1838. Dr. Jordan complained that the North Carolinian Indians would hide the dead children from them and refused to take or even give their children the medicines they had for them.

They were forced to eat what the soldiers had for them or perish. In some cases, these food stuffs were sold to the locals.
