Shannon Bichard currently serves as an associate professor and chairperson for the Texas Tech University Department of Advertising & Brand Strategy in the College of Media and Communication. She has been a faculty member at Texas Tech since moving to Lubbock in 2001. As a born and raised Floridian, the transition was challenging, but ultimately the people of West Texas and the integrity at Texas Tech took hold of her heart. She now considers herself a true Texan with a deep love for wide open skies, tortillas, and the Red Raiders.
Her academic journey began with the pursuit of an undergraduate and then master’s degree in Communication from the University of Central Florida. During this time, Shannon was introduced to teaching and fell in love with the process of educating others. She went on to obtain her Ph.D. in Mass Communication with an emphasis on Advertising at the University of Florida. She became intrigued with the Advertising industry as it blended her love for creativity, strategy, and thinking outside the box. When Texas Tech offered her a job opportunity, Shannon knew that a faculty position in Advertising was a perfect fit.
Since arriving at TTU, Shannon has aspired to achieve balance while pursuing excellence in teaching, research, industry engagement, student
advising, and administration, as well as honoring her family, faith, and friendships. Shannon teaches a variety of advertising courses, but her deepest passion is her work as the advisor for the AAF National Student Advertising Competition. As faculty advisor, she has worked with over 350 students on 20+ clients, won 1st place three times in District 10, and finally secured the national championship in 2022!
She continues scholarly research focused on advertising, consumer behavior, and social media. During her 20+ years as a communication scholar, she has published 1 book, 3 book chapters, 33 journal publications, and delivered 64 conference presentations. Shannon has also received multiple teaching and research awards, including induction into the prestigious Texas Tech Teaching Academy, the TTU President’s Excellence in Teaching Award, the TTU Mortar Board Apple Polishing Award, the College of Media & Communication Outstanding Researcher Award, and the AAF 10th District Educator of the Year Award.
Shannon Bichard has built her career in advertising by embracing the opportunity to support and encourage the success of others. As a teacher, colleague, advisor, and mentor- she has given her heart and soul to inspire those around her to reach their fullest potential. And she’s just getting started.

The Price Group is a full-service advertising and branding agency. With our 50th anniversary approaching, we decided it was time to update our identity. The previous company logo (below) was functional but didn’t reflect the creative reputation for which our firm is known. Several years ago we developed a labrador retriever mascot, Linc, and wanted to feature him more prominently in our identity, but update him to appear more assertive and energetic.

American Advertising Federation, Lubbock 84 Evermore West Texas Grit, Issue 2 TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY ILLUSTRATION SPRING/SUMMER 2022 No 27 No 26 EVERMORE Magazine Meating the Demand In 2005, Texas Tech opened a store on campus for retail meat sales. Since then, Raider Red Meats has grown significantly. It features a wide variety of beef, pork, lamb and fully cooked products in store, plus shipping is available to all 50 states. Beyond offering products, Raider Red Meats provides hands-on, real-world experiences for students in the Meat Science and Muscle Biology Program and supports scholarships for students throughout Davis College. A range of Raider Red Meats products are available in Lubbock-area United Supermarkets and Market Street locations. But keep an eye out at your local store; they may be headed your way in the future. National Champions Texas Tech’s student teams continued to wreck the competition this year, bringing home four separate national championships. In September, a three-person team from the School of Personal Financial Planning came out on top in the 2021 Financial Planning Challenge, hosted by the Financial Planning Association®, Ameriprise Financial and the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. Ansleigh Brister, Valerie Carpenter and Laura Werner comprised the university’s first all-women team. It was Texas Tech’s third national championship in four years. In November, two teams representing the Department of Animal & Food Sciences in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources returned victorious. The Horse Judging Team captured its first national title since 2006, at the Farnam American Quarter Horse Association World Horse Judging Contest, and the Meat Judging Team won its 16th national competition during the 2021 American Meat Science Association International Meat Judging Contest. The victory marked not only the third straight national crown for the Meat Judging Team, which also won in 2019 and 2020, but also the second time Texas Tech’s team has been a back-toback-to-back national champion – it first accomplished the feat from 2011 to 2013. The Wool Judging Team also claimed its second straight national championship in March. RED RAIDERS STEP UP WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH WEST TEXAS GRIT ILLUSTRATIONS BY RONY DIXON BY GLENYS YOUNG While working toward his master’s degree, Satchell will complete two internships as part of the fellowship, one at the State Department in Washington and one at a U.S. embassy somewhere in the world. Throughout graduate school, he’ll have a mentor in the Foreign Service and, in the fall of 2024, he’ll enter the Foreign Service himself. “I studied Middle Eastern foreign policy, so I would prefer the Middle East or Northern Africa,” Satchell notes, “but I like to say I’m a global citizen. So wherever I’m needed, whatever may occur, wherever I’m sent, I’ll be happy to be there because I can learn so much from each post that I’m serving.” Beyond the next seven years, Satchell isn’t sure where his path will go –but he does know where he will end up. “I don’t really know how I will get to Secretary of State,” Satchell laughs, “but someone described me as having ‘global ambition,’ and I love keeping that in the back of my head to describe my drive. “I don’t have a set plan in place. It all depends on who the president is, who they select as ambassadors and secretary of state, and networking – a lot of factors come into it. But I know if I continue to be driven and ambitious, and I stick to my goals and my plans, I will get there. It will happen.” After all, history has its eyes on him.
“From the small things, like how I interact with people on campus, what I’m doing has an impact and molds my character as I pursue a diplomatic career.”
to her, I think the appreciation factor is just through the roof. I think she just had that moment where she’s like, ‘Man, these people are not going to forget me anytime soon.’”
For Beckie, bringing a gold medal back to her alma mater meant the world.
“My heart was so full when I was surrounded by those people,” Beckie says.
“It was really nice to be able to share that moment, especially with people who deserve a lot of credit for where I am in my career.”
When asked about the transformation he’s seen in Beckie over the years, from the fastest kid in Colorado, to a fiery straight-laced freshman, and now an Olympic gold medalist, Stone pauses for thought.
It’s a journey, he says, that transcends sports and gets to the very heart of who Beckie is.
“Losing your dad when you’re 7 years old, that’s tragedy. But she had to get through it, and the journey that followed made her who she is.
“And at any time, she could have shut it down. She’s got a great degree from Texas Tech, she’s super personable, and I think her job in communications would be immediate anywhere. But soccer is the path she chose, and continues to choose, and she’s been a raving success.”
Beckie’s life took another turn in April when she signed a three-year contract with Portland Thorns FC. To Stone, the choice indicates that Beckie has taken charge of her career path and – as usual – she is opting into a challenge.
“She could have stayed at Manchester City and continued to be an integral part of that program, but she wanted to come back and play here,” he says. “She could have asked to be on a team that
doesn’t have the history of winning that Portland does, but she knew she was going into a team where it’d be harder to make a contribution – and she stepped right in to play right away.
“She deserves happiness. She’s worked hard. But she’s not done yet. I think this journey’s got many chapters left and a lot of stories still to tell.”
Beckie agrees.
“No one ever knows where they’re going to be when it’s all said and done,” the gold medalist says. “A lot of people start out with a dream and that dream develops and it turns into other things. My dream was to be an Olympic soccer player. If you feel like your dreams are just as crazy, I think that’s a good sign.
“I don’t really know where my path is going to lead,” she adds. “I see more challenges, hopefully, in my future because that’s how we continue to grow. But, you know,
85 Evermore West Texas Grit, Issue 3 TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY EDITORIAL SPREAD OR FEATURE DESIGN No 52 EVERMORE Magazine COMING HOME When Beckie returned stateside, one of the first things she did was call Stone. Since turning pro in 2016, she had come back to Texas Tech multiple times. While playing for the Houston Dash, the Sky Blue Football Club of New Jersey and Manchester City in England, she kept returning to Lubbock in the offseason for practice sessions with her former team. She later worked on the team staff while earning her 2017 bachelor’s degree in media strategies. She and Stone stayed close throughout it all. After celebrating her gold medal with her family in Colorado, Beckie wanted to celebrate with her Red Raider family, too. Stone had a surprise waiting for her on arrival. “He said, ‘There’s some media that want to talk to you and then we’ll celebrate as a staff afterward,’” Beckie laughs. “I walked in and would have never expected what I saw.” The media were waiting for her at John Walker Soccer Complex–alongside Beckie’s friends and former teammates, the entire Red Raider women’s soccer team and the complex’s namesakes, John and Lisa Walker. The applause was thunderous. “Janine never asks for appreciation,” Stone says. “She doesn’t ask for admiration. She’s not begging for a compliment. So when you give it
we’ve checked gold medal off the list. So, now it’s one day at a time and I’ll see what happens next.” Centennial Champion Texas Tech has a new horse to go along with its new century. Just after the university launched its centennial celebration in August, the Masked Rider’s new steed was given a timely stage name. Centennial Champion, as he’s now called, has stepped into the hoofprints of the 14 horses before him and acclimated admirably to a job that’s not only unfamiliar but can be downright frightening for horses when they begin. For more on that, re-read Issue No. 2. So, who is Centennial Champion? He’s a generally calm, trusting 9-year-old quarter horse gelding from Lubbock. His past jobs included working cattle, roping events and general recreational riding – and now he’ll be one of the most recognizable faces of Texas Tech. How fitting it is that, after a nationwide search, the right horse for the job was already right here on the South Plains? It just goes to show: From Here, It’s Possible. RED RAIDERS STEP UP WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH WEST TEXAS GRIT BY GLENYS YOUNG FALL/WINTER 2022 No 53 Tom Stone and Janine Beckie pose in the John Walker Soccer Complex. Heppert came to Texas Tech in 2017 as the university’s new Vice President for Research & Innovation, he spoke of the challenges faced throughout academia. While Texas Tech’s total and restricted research expenditures were seeing steady growth year after year, its federal research expenditures had been trending downward since 2014. The erosion of federal support for research, he explained, was affecting universities across the country, and yet, he was optimistic because of the vitality and diversity of scholarly and creative activities he found on this campus. Five years later, Heppert’s optimism seems particularly prescient. In 2022, the university topped $220 million in total research expenditures – up from $184.3 million in 2017 –and exceeded $43 million in federal research expenditures for the first time in school history, up from $31.3 million. Texas Tech also received a record total of nearly $65 million in federal awards overall, highlighted by the university’s largest grant ever. Initially $26 million from the National Science Foundation to launch the Engineering Research Center for Advancing Sustainable and Distributed Fertilizer Production, or CASFER, the grant could be renewed for a total of $51 million. We applaud the work of Texas Tech’s faculty and researchers in achieving these benchmarks and look forward to seeing how these advancements will benefit our world. ILLUSTRATION BY RONY DIXON
PRAIRIE DOG TOWNS EVERYWHERE CAN TRACE THEIR ROOTS TO LUBBOCK.
If prairie dogs live in a zoo or park near you, you may well have stopped to watch the chubby rodents’ playful antics and hear their yipping barks. But you probably don’t know there was a time the animals were hunted, nearly to extinction, or that their survival is largely attributed to one pioneer on the plains of West Texas.
It was 1935. For 10 years, Lubbock resident Kennedy N. Clapp had read the headlines predicting the extinction of the black-tailed prairie dog. Ranchers saw them as pests whose vast towns defoliated the land, making it too barren for grazing, and whose burrows posed a risk to cattle, since a broken leg was a death sentence. To eliminate the threat to agriculture, representatives of the U.S. Biological Survey poisoned hundreds of thousands of the rodents. A professional cotton buyer, Clapp was intimately interested in the prairie dogs’ fate. After all, his livelihood was tied to the success of Lubbock’s agriculture. And personally, Clapp was an avid gardener; his home on 13th Street was known citywide for its rose garden. So, perhaps it doesn’t make sense that Clapp became the rodents’ biggest advocate – but he did. As the federal government was looking to wipe out the prairie dogs, Clapp was working to save them. Luckily, he was unusually well positioned to do so. As chairman of the Lubbock Parks and Recreation board, Clapp carved out a section of the newly established Mackenzie State Park for the creatures. With the help of a friend, Clapp trapped two pairs of black-tailed prairie dogs and released them into their new enclosure. The rodents went to work, making the area now known as Prairie Dog Town their home. They dug burrows and birthed one new generation of pups after another.
In 1937, the newspaper made the grim announcement that prairie dogs were almost extinct around Lubbock – but not in Prairie Dog Town. Within five years, it had become world famous and one of the major attractions of Mackenzie Park
in 1963, the prairie dogs became not only the city’s chief tourist attraction but also its most appreciated export.
Clapp once said, “The man who gets the most out of life is the one who contributes most to his city and his neighbors.”
If that’s so, Clapp certainly got the most out of life.
Thanks to his efforts, prairie dog towns can now be found in zoos throughout the country – from Boston to San Diego, Minneapolis to Fort Worth, and everywhere in between.
The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum offers prairie dog “adoptions.” The rodents are present in the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, in Washington, D.C.; at Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming; Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota; and even Pairi Daiza, a privately owned zoo and botanical garden in Belgium. And it all started here – as a true Lubbock original.

People were traveling to Lubbock from across the nation just to see them. As their population grew, the prairie dogs began tunneling out of their enclosure. Any animal not in Prairie Dog Town was fair game for extermination, so the parks department installed an underground fence to keep them where they would be safe. But it was impossible to ignore that Prairie Dog Town was bursting at the seams. Unwilling to poison or shoot the animals, Clapp and his successor, A.C. “Stumpy” Hamilton, found another solution. They put out a call to zoos, museums, parks and wildlife refuges the world over: Any that could meet strict requirements for the rodents’ care would be eligible to receive a shipment of prairie dogs, absolutely free. Judging by the immediate, overwhelming response, many people did not see prairie dogs as pests, and more than 1,000 residents of Lubbock’s Prairie Dog Town were soon relocated. They became the founding residents of new colonies from coast to coast and even at the royal zoo in Morocco. As the Lubbock newspaper noted

The usual vibrancy around his house had been muted – and he didn’t know why. After months of anticipation, Darrick and his 4-year-old sister, Roxy, had been so excited as they welcomed their newborn sister, Laurie, just weeks earlier. But today, his mother couldn’t stop crying. “It changes your world as a kid, when your mom’s struggling to keep it together,” he recalls. “I just remember being really worried; I was sensitive already, and that kind of thing bothered me.” Finally, Darrick’s father broke the news. “He told us they had just learned Laurie couldn’t hear or see,” Wade recalls. “He told us that was a big deal, and it would be changing the way we live.” And it did – but not only in the ways the Wade family expected. Growing up with Laurie enhanced her older brother’s natural senses. He learned to experience the world differently, giving just as much power to touch, smell and taste as to sight and sound. That shift in perspective made all the difference in Wade’s career as an architect. His unique focus on sensory design sets him apart from his peers in an overwhelmingly visual field. Now the assistant dean for external affairs in Texas Tech University’s College of Architecture, Wade credits his sister for helping him break away from the rest of his field. DARRICK WADE’S SISTER TAUGHT HIM TO SEE THE WORLD DIFFERENTLY.
