The Problem — For Humans, Animals and the Environment
Institutionalized animal cruelty and environmental degradation are issues without national borders. Wherever they occur, these problems affect us all. The industrial abuse and exploitation of animals is accelerating in many areas, including factory faming and fur processing. Environmental and social issues in society are also growing exponentially.
The Solution — Humane Education
Humane Education, a new concept in China, is based on the recognition that humans, animals and the environment are interrelated and should be treated with respect and consideration. ACTAsia is pioneering a new approach with the CARING FOR LIFE program in kindergartens and primary schools in China. We are training teams of professional Humane Educators to teach children compassion for animals, kindness towards people and respect for the environment. Our Work in Humane Education We are teaching 5 to 8 year old Chinese school children, with over 3,000 students enrolled in the program for the 2013/2014 school year. A “Memorandum of Understanding” is signed with each school so the course is endorsed and supported by school management. The year-long course contains five subjects – Web of Life, Animal Sentience, Kids Interacting Safely with Dogs, Responsible Animal Guardianship, and Developing Compassion and Empathy. A ‘teacher’s pack’ of humane education resources and activities has been developed through research and the review of materials from many parts of the world, adapting them to suit the Chinese culture and education system. Each year ACTAsia organizes CARING FOR LIFE workshops to train primary school teachers and university students to become humane educators.
