Scurvy Makes a Come Back

I have a clear memory of a primary school teacher Miss Marn teaching us about vitamins.

She told us which vitamins were found in diﬀerent foods and the diseases you got if you didn’t eat enough of these foods: rickets from lack of vitamin D; beri-beri from lack of vitamin B and scurvy from lack of vitamin C.

I don’t remember anything about beri-beri, but I remember rickets made the leg bones weak and you would struggle to walk properly

But it was scurvy that grabbed our 10-year old minds. Miss Marn told us graphic tales of sailors in the olden days who didn’t have fresh fruit and vegetables on their long sea voyages, so had no access to vitamin C and fell ill with scurvy

They got thin, weak, their gums bled and their teeth became loose.

And if they ran out of raons altogether, some sailors were so starved that they tried to eat the leather around the ropes, she said.

I had never heard of leather around ropes, but had a vivid image of an emaciated, pony-tailed sailor gnawing on a piece of leather around the end of a rope, blood seeping from his gums as he desperately tried to get some nutrients from the salt-hardened leather.

It made a big impression on me. Our young imaginaons were acve.

Sailors died like ﬂies and esmates are that over two million died of scurvy between the 16th and 18th centuries.

One arcle said scurvy was so common that ship owners assumed a 50% death rate of sailors on a long voyage.

Then in 1747 Brish naval surgeon James Lind, who experimented with diﬀerent diets among 12 sailors who had scurvy, found that those that had been given oranges and lemons “made a remarkable recovery”

Lind published his results, but it took another 42 years before the Royal Navy issued orders for lemons and limes to be distributed to sailors.

This is apparently where the nickname “limey” for Brits comes from.

The cure has been around for centuries, so I was surprised to read in Harvard Public Health recently that cases of scurvy had surfaced in the US. Who would have thought?

The author called it “a disease long forgoen by the medical profession”

There have also been cases in other rich countries – Australia and Canada.

The doctor in the US wrote that her paent had come to her with painful feet and hands, swollen gums, bad teeth and wounds that wouldn’t heal. He had scurvy.

But no one in the health care system had recognised that he had malnutrion - for 30 years!

She said she had treated 655 people with scurvy in Michigan over the last 10 years, all from poor areas with limited access to nutrious food.

A course of vitamin C cured them all.

“Why aren’t doctors talking about this? Or does the health care business model neglect problems that cost so lile to treat?” the doctor wrote.

Darn good queson.

Hippocrates apparently said: “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.”

Good advice. But they didn’t know about junk food in ancient Greece, so perhaps modify his moo a bit.
