Of Goellips and Tatta-bullies
I’m sure many of you have names for things that only you or your family use.
Like the word “goellip”. Ever heard of it? I’ll eat my hat if you have. I don’t even know how to spell it because I discovered some me ago that it is not a real word. But as kids growing up in Cape Town we used the word goellip all the me and assumed it was real.
What does it mean? Well, it’s our name for those li le hard things that fall off Australian flowering gum trees.
Everyone in our neighbourhood called them goellips. The other day I used the word when speaking to an old friend who had lived at the other end of our suburb and he didn’t know what I meant.
I explained what it was, then asked him what the neighbourhood kids in his neck of the woods had called goellips, and he said they didn’t have a name for them.
So ja, very peculiar. No one knows where the name came from, and I have never met anyone from outside our childhood neighbourhood who uses it. (Apparently Ozzies call them “gum nuts”.)
Anyway, goellips featured quite a bit in our young lives. We girls liked to play with them but the boys – my big brother included –used them as “ammo” for their catapults.
Good grief, those things hurt. I remember ge ng a big bruise on my thigh during one ca y fight where I was caught in the crossfire –or so the boys claimed - but I think it was far too well aimed a shot for that.
Then there is the word ta a-bullies. No idea how to spell it because it is also not a real word.
It was one my mother used and apparently she got it from my grandmother. She would say things like: “No, you children can’t go and play now, it’s too late.” If we pleaded she would add: “No, the ta a-bullies may get you.”
We used to ask her what ta a-bullies were but she never gave an answer. We weren’t sure if they existed, but weren’t brave enough to find out.
And have any of you heard of a Polly redstocking?
It’s what my family and some other Noetzie people called the African oystercatcher, those beau ful pitch-black birds with bright red eyes, beaks and legs. I heard the name oystercatcher only as an adult, and I have yet to meet anyone else who calls these birds Polly redstockings.
BTW – good news about African oystercatchers: their numbers have increased and they are no longer categorized as “near threatened”. The reasons for this conserva on success story include removing feral cats from breeding islands, introducing a beach-driving ban in 2001, and the rapid spread of alien Mediterranean black mussels along our shores. These now provide the bulk of the birds’ food.
Speaking of made-up words, I learned recently that Shakespeare made up many words that we use today, including bedroom, lonely, fashionable, cri c, eyeball, addic on and bedazzled.
No, my goellip, ta a-bullie and Polly redstocking words are not in Shakespeare’s league – but they are s ll quite fun, nê.
