Happy New Year
A new year is just around the corner – and where will New Year’s Eve find you?
At a party, dancing un l the early hours?
At home with family or friends, staying awake just long enough to crack open the bubbly to see in the new year?
Or in bed, asleep, just like any other night?
Many of my New Year celebra ons have been here at Noetzie where the Henderson family held “open house” on New Year’s Eve at their Noetzie Castle. Everyone was invited, a gathering of the community in a beau ful se ng, all genera ons present.
Some of my best jolling New Year par es were when I was a young reporter in Durban. We had par es for the whole journo community it seemed, and danced ll dawn.
I love singing Auld Lang Syne, but like most of you I suspect, I know only the first verse and the chorus. It always gives me a happy-sad feeling: happy because of the people I am with, and sad because of the people I miss.
It was wri en in 1788 by Sco sh poet Robert Burns.
The literal meaning of the words Auld Lang Syne is “old long since”, but in prac ce it means both “old mes, especially mes fondly remembered”, and “old or long friendships”
Wiki says “for auld lang syne” can be loosely translated as “for the sake of old mes”.
Interes ngly, Burns didn’t write the original Auld Lang Syne song, but wrote his lyrics around those of a much older Sco sh folk song whose origin has been lost in the mists of me.
New Year is a big celebra on in Scotland, where it is called Hogmanay, with fireworks and partying in the streets. One of the Hogmanay customs is the prac ce of “first-foo ng” which refers to the first person to cross your threshold a er midnight.
Tradi onally the person should bring a gi of coal or fruitcake or whisky – and most people prefer the first-foot to be a tall, darkhaired man.
The first-foot is supposed to set the luck for that household for the rest of the year – and as it is in the middle of the icy northern winter, I imagine in the old days coal would have been as welcome as the food and drink.
It is thought that the reason New Year celebra ons became so important in Scotland was because Christmas was banned there for about 400 years. A er the Sco sh Reforma on in the 16th century, when Scotland split from the Catholic Church, the Protestant Kirk was suspicious of anything related to Catholicism, including Christmas celebra ons. In 1640 the Sco sh Parliament made Christmas illegal, punishable by jail.
New Year is so big in Scotland that January 2nd is also a public holiday – like the Tweede Nuwe Jaar we used to have in the Cape that sadly we have lost.
