No New Year Peace and Goodwill for Millions

Hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year

While doing some last minute Christmas shopping in a small Knysna shop I overheard the cashier ask the elderly customer in front of me what he wished for in the coming new year

“I wish next year will be as good as this year!”

We all smiled and I said how nice to hear a wish like that.

Not everyone is as fortunate of course, something that was brought home to me in a text message from a friend, Linda, who teaches English online.

In her ﬁrst lesson of the year she asked a Ukrainian student: “What is your New Year’s resoluon?”

“To survive the year,” he replied.

Quite a shock to hear something like that, which brings home how many millions in the world live horrible lives through no fault of their own.

Linda’s student is 27, married, and works in IT. He needs to improve his English because he has internaonal clients.

“He doesn’t live in Kyiv, so it is not as bad as it could be, but they do have air raids and they live knowing they can have a bomb dropped on them any me.”

It is three years since Russian invaded Ukraine and the war shows no sign of ending.

Linda’s message led me online and I found a video made on New Year’s Eve by a Ukrainian man living in Kyiv

It was bleak. Deserted streets, no fesve lights or Christmas decoraons, no people celebrang – in fact no people at all.

The narrator said before the war there had always been a brightly lit Christmas tree on the square, fesve lights, food courts, ﬁreworks on New Year’s Eve and crowds of celebrang people.

“Now the streets are empty, every day. There is also no snow At least snow can decorate the streets.”

“No ﬁreworks, but there are bombs and missiles, even this night. Ten to twelve air raid sirens yesterday”

As he walks with his camera along the streets, he ﬁnds a tree that someone had strung with lights.

“It is really cool. At least we have this.”

Fieen minutes before midnight the Ukrainian says: “For us it was a horrible year. Let’s pray next year will bring at least something good for us and let’s hope this war will ﬁnally end.”

Just then a piercing air raid siren goes oﬀ. You hear a so groan. Another raid, another trip to the air raid shelters. He ﬁnishes his video.

“Happy New Year everybody. Stay safe.”

Ukraine is not alone in war. The Geneva Academy lists all world’s current armed conﬂicts: 45 in the Middle East and north Africa; 35 in sub-Saharan Africa; 19 in Asia; seven in Europe and six in Mexico and Colombia. Hundreds of millions of people in these countries live in constant fear and have seen family and friends killed.

This is not meant to depress you, but rather to highlight a fundamental that is so easy to forget: how lucky we are to live in a country at peace.

Many South African lives were lost to achieve this peace. We must cherish and defend it.
