Course codes are for registration purposes. Please ensure you have this code when registering or inquiring about a class. All times are listed in military (24 hour) format: (1300 = 1:00 pm). The Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta strives to provide awareness of risks associated with each program/activity it offers. It should be understood that there are risks associated with participation in our programs/activities, and that there are risks/dangers which are inherent in each specific activity. These risks include, but are not limited to, loss of personal property, the possibility of personal injury and physical injury to others, such as muscle strain, broken bones, concussions, soft tissue damage, infectious diseases, cardiac arrest, etc., including the possible risk of severe or fatal injury. It is each individual’s responsibility to ascertain whether he/she has any health conditions which make it inadvisable to participate in that activity. We strongly recommend an annual physical exam prior to the start of any program or activity and that additional information is sought at any time a person’s health status changes. Such actions are designed to ensure that participation is within one’s health status/limitations. THE FINE PRINT waivers, class cancellations and drop-in passes Waiver – All participants are required to sign a yearly waiver before beginning the program. The waiver is available on line at www.recservices.ualberta.ca and www.activityreg.ualberta.ca, as well as at the Activity Registration Zone and the Recreation Services service desks.
Class changes and cancellations – We make decisions about class cancellations because of low enrolment the day before the class begins – Minimum enrolments must be met by this time for classes to run. – Under some circumstances, classes with low enrollment may run the first week to encourage registration, but may be canceled in the second week – Although we make every effort to run all classes listed in the Activities Guide, classes may be cancelled because of unforeseen circumstances
Drop-In Passes Drop-in passes provide flexibility in experiencing a smorgasbord of fitness classes. Purchase these at the Activity Registration Zone, Recreation Sports Office, or the Service Desk at Saville Community Sports Centre to attend select classes.

Drop-in Participation – Terms of Use – – – – –
Drop-in passes are available for all fitness development classes as well as many other formats Drop-in pass must be presented with picture ID to the instructor before each class Drop-in participation is on a first come, first served basis and at the discretion of the course instructor Registered participants for a particular class will have priority for attendance over drop-in participants Owing to the popularity of our classes, it may be difficult to gain admittance to certain classes during the first two weeks of the term. However, after the first two weeks of a session, we can generally accommodate all drop-in participants – Passes are non-transferable and non-refundable once purchased. Drop-in passes cannot be exchanged for a credit towards registration in a class.

learn to swim program descriptions Parent and Tot (Children 6 months to 3 years) – Structures in-water interaction between parent and child to stress the importance of play in developing water-positive attitudes and skills – Activities and progressions are based on child development, so parents register in the level appropriate for their child’s age – Lifesaving Society Water Smart® tips complement skills learning Swim for Life Preschool Program (3 – 5 years) – Gives children a head start on learning to swim – Develops an appreciation and healthy respect for the water – Progressions ensure children become comfortable in the water and have fun developing a foundation of water skills – Incorporates Lifesaving Society Water Smart® education in all preschool levels Swim for Life Swimmer (Children 6 years and up) – Children learn how to swim before they get in too deep – Progressions accommodate beginners and swimmers who want to build on basic water skills – In-water practice develops solid swimming strokes and skills – Water Smart® education is part of every level – There are six swimmer levels that flow seamlessly into the Canadian Swim Patrol program to make a nine-level comprehensive program

PROGRAMS Adult Classes (13 years and older) – For beginners or swimmers who want help with their strokes – Participants set their own goals to develop water confidence and smooth, recognizable strokes – Water Smart® education is part of all levels – Instructors adapt lessons to accommodate the needs of adult learners and provide the flexibility for them to select the skills they want to learn to achieve their personal swimming goals Fitness Swimmer (13 years and older) – For swimmers of any age who want to improve their overall physical fitness in the water. – Fitness Swimmer provides a structured approach to improve physical fitness based on accepted training principles and practices including interval training – Participants learn to use pace clocks and timers and reach their target zone. They also create workouts and set fitness goals Private or Semi-Private Classes (8 years and Older) – Instructors will work one-on-one with participants on skills they identify. Suitable for children or adults having difficulty in a particular area of swimming

SCUBA Diving Certification PADI Scuba Diver Training – One of the most widely recognized scuba certifications in the world. These classes fulfill the pool and theory components for PADI certification – The theory will be taught online prior to the start of the pool sessions. PROGRAMS First Aid Courses Recreation Services offers several Red Cross First Aid courses and can arrange additional Standard First Aid Certification or Recertification courses to meet the needs of your group. PROGRAMS Fitness Leadership Certification – Certification to become a nationally recognized certified fitness leader. – After completing the requirements of the Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Program, fitness leaders may lead many different types of fitness classes – Certification involves 1. Completing the AFLCA Exercise Theory course 2. Completing a fitness specialty course (and designation if applicable) 3. Pass mark of 80 per cent or higher required on exams 4. Practical assessment OR 1. Proof of approved academic course work 2. Exam challenge with a passing grade of 80 per cent or better 3. PROGRAMS indoor cYcling – Takes place on specially-designed indoor road bikes – Based on exercises and cycling techniques used by outdoor race-enthusiasts – Includes interval training, strength drills and endurance rides along with guided imagery to climb hills and race in sprints, accompanied by energetic, motivating music – Intensity is self-monitored and no inherent coordination is required making cycling classes a great exercise for everybody from beginners to tri-athletes – Wednesday’s 1900 class will include five arm ergonometers generously supplied by the Canadian Paraplegic Association access procedures and policies – Number of participants is limited – To ensure a drop in to the class, pick up a cycle token at the Recreation Services Programs Office (Room W-90) prior to each class – Tokens are available 30 minutes prior to the class start time – Photo ID required (e.g. ONE card) to receive a token – Give the token to the instructor to claim a bike Also see Fitness Fusion for Cycle/ Strength (Ride Strong), and Cycle/ Yoga (Chill Ride) Combinations – In these classes participants remain on the bikes for approximately the first 50 minutes, allowing for cycling options with your drop in access. – If the class starts before 1000 or runs on the weekends, please go directly to W-95A – Drop-in participants must already have a drop- in pass. Judo consists of throwing techniques, ground holds, choking and arm lock techniques, and teaches the use of controlling balance and body movement to defeat an opponent. Safety is paramount, and learning how to fall safely is an important first step. Taught by Gord Okamura and Kelly Palmer, both with fifth degree black belt and advanced certification under the National Coaching Certification Program. Gord and Kelly are multiple Canadian champions and are world ranked in Judo Kata. – Uniforms are not required initially but are needed later when learning advanced skills – Students can enhance their learning and skills by signing up for both Monday and Thursday beginner classes

Yoga for Breast Cancer Survivors – For those who are post-treatment and are looking to regain or maintain range of motion, improve breathing and learn meditation – Sequencing of postures specifically to safely increase joint mobility, alleviate effects of surgery and cancer treatment, aid lymphatic drainage, and restore energy balance – Classes will include the use of props to adjust poses individually while safely strengthening and stretching muscles – Breathing and mediation techniques will be taught to promote relaxation – The instructor has a PhD in exercise science with a specialization in health and physical activity behaviour, as well as an MSc in kinesiology and an MA in psychology. She has completed her postdoctoral fellowship in exercise oncology, is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and has completed over 300 hours of yoga instructor training, including training specifically in yoga for cancer survivors – Her teaching experience has involved community-based interventions to increase physical activity in sedentary populations, and more recently she was involved in research examining the benefits of yoga on immune function, mood and memory in advanced vs. novice yoga practitioners, and breast cancer survivors code

INTRAMURAL intraMural recreational sports Recreation Services offers a wide variety of Intramural activities also known as Recreational Sports. These activities are offered throughout the academic term and are offered in three program areas, Co-Rec, Men’s and Women’s. Co-Rec activities are activities where men and women compete together on the same team. Most activities are also structured with different levels of play to accommodate all skill and experience levels. who can participate? Student Led – Student Delivered – Student Focused The mission of the Sport Clubs Program is to provide a sustainable group structure by providing a framework for transparent, fiscally responsible, student led activities; engaging and assisting groups in selecting safe and appropriate environments for physical activity; fostering an atmosphere of leadership development through peer education by providing diverse opportunities to learn and lead though physical activities; fostering personal and social growth through extracurricular group activities; and developing groups to act as ambassadors of the University of Alberta. As an integral component of the Recreation Services program and the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation, the Sport Clubs program strives to meet the recreational and competitive needs of the University of Alberta community in a wide variety of sport activities. Clubs are run for students by students; however limited membership is open to University of Alberta alumni, staff and faculty. FACILITIES The climbing wall offers three types of climbing on some of the tallest climbing walls in Canada. 1. Bouldering: over 100 feet of continuous traversing to a maximum height of three metres 2. Top-roping: 11 ropes on four separate climbing walls to a maximum height of 15 metres 3. Lead climbing: four lines on two of our main climbing walls The climbing wall is a supervised indoor climbing complex offering drop-in access, group programming options as well as scheduled instructional programs. We will not have instructors on hand to belay for drop-in climbers. access requirements Access Cards: Bouldering, Top Rope, or Lead Card – Bouldering Free (annual re-test n/a) – Top Rope Test $3 (annual retest $0) – Lead Test $6 (annual retest $0) Important – All climbers must check in at the climbing wall customer service desk – All climbers must present their picture ID and valid access card before entering the complex – Although the access card is a one-time annual cost, payment of an admission fee is required each time you climb – All access cards are valid for one year from date of issue. There is no charge for the reissuing of access cards; but retesting is required along with a newly signed waiver – If you do not pass the annual retest, the standard test fee will be applied to a subsequent retest – Climbers over the age of 13 can obtain a high wall card if they are successful in the Top Rope test which can be administered during regular operating hours – An appointment for a lead test is required to obtain a lead card, email: leadtest@ualberta.ca to arrange your test – It is not necessary to have your top rope card before taking your lead test – In all cases, climbers 15 years or younger must be supervised by an adult – Children 15 and under may be belayed by an adult who has successfully completed the high wall check, but children are not permitted to belay an adult without their top rope access card – All climbers are required to have their top rope access cards in order to belay each other, except in the above circumstance
