H ow to use th i s gu i de The Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation: A Tradition of Excellence in Sport and Recreation The Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation has a long history of offering a variety of first-class programs that reflect our excellence in teaching and research in physical education, recreation, sport and kinesiology, and the winning tradition of our Golden Bears and Pandas sports teams. Excellence is at the heart of all of our sport and children’s activity camps, where we provide quality instruction, and employ the most up-to-date research to teach the fundamentals, techniques and systems in each sport or activity we offer. Our instructors include talented, qualified staff. Golden Bears and Pandas coaches and athletes are among our cadre of camp leaders and teachers. We strive to provide the best possible learning environment in our camps, by teaching cooperation and good sportsmanship and an appreciation for physical activity in all its forms. We want participants to have an outstanding experience!
How to use this brochure 1. We offer individual sport camps, multi-activity camps and specialty camps. Multiactivity camps include two or more sports and activities 2. Multi-activity camps are marked with a star (H) 3. Locate the camp of your choice in either Sport, Multi-activity or Specialty sections and note the camp code 4. Enter the code on the registration form. 5. Select an alternate camp. This will allow us to place you or your child in a second choice camp if your top choice is full 6. The registration form must be completed in its entirety, including the informed consent section, before it can be processed
Supervised Lunches for most Full Day Camps • All full day camps offer supervised lunch breaks • Lunch program available for all South Campus camps at Saville Community Sports Centre. See lunch program details in the guide. • Participants are responsible for purchasing or providing their own lunch each day. • Peanut-free snacks and meals would be appreciated. • At some locations, a bagged lunch is necessary; at others there is access to facilities to purchase lunch.
Equipment and clothing • Unless stated, all equipment is provided • Camp participants must come dressed appropriate to their activity • Camp T-shirt or jersey included in camp cost

It should be understood that there are risks associated with participation in our programs/activities, and that there are risks/dangers which are inherent in each specific activity. Location: Saville Community Sports Centre, 11610-65 Avenue. Campers can create their own full-day combo camp at the Saville Community Sports Centre. Choose from a variety of half-day camps at Saville Centre. Build-Your-Own Sport Camp at Saville
s p o r t
Activity Camps and Combo Camps offer a single activity or combination of two or more activities and sports. They provide a wide range of recreational opportunities for children and teens who like to try new and different activities, or want to combine two or more interests in one camp. Activity camps are suitable for all skill levels and provide an opportunity to sample a range of exciting recreational pursuits in a high-energy, inclusive environment. Camps are listed alphabetically. The star next to the camp name denotes a camp that has two or more activities. Camps take place on the University’s North Campus and South Campus (Saville Community Sports Centre and Foote Field). For all Activity and Combo Camps: – No experience necessary – Activities take place at indoor and outdoor facilities – campers should dress appropriately – Participants must wear comfortable athletic wear and if the camp involves swimming bring a swim suit, towel, and goggles – Bring a peanut-free snack and water bottle each day – Supervised lunch breaks – Include a camp tee-shirt – Extended hours for drop off and pick up: supervised early drop off is available at 0800, and late pick up until 1700 at no extra charge – No camps on Monday July 1 and August 5 2013

CAMP-4-FUN! (6-12 years) Location: North Campus. Meet at E-19, lower level of the Van Vliet Centre. A high-energy, multi-sport camp includes activities in a variety of athletic environments each day. All activities are geared toward each participant’s level, in a fun, exciting, learning environment! Rotate through the following facilities and activities each day: – Aquatics Centre • Pool activities, including swimming strokes, basic diving, games and more! Gymnastics Fun and Fitness Combo (5-11 years) Gymnastics Team Sports and Fitness Combo (7-14 years ) Location – S outh Campus, Saville Community Sports Centre and Foote Field. Jointly offered by the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation and Ortona Gymnastics Club. – Introduces a range of activities, games and skills in a fun, friendly, safe environment – Full and half day camps are available

Gymnastics Team Sports and Fitness Combo: – Features a different team sport each day. These may include soccer, rugby, basketball, field hockey, Ultimate, and track and field – Campers also participate in fun, fitness-oriented activities such as dodgeball, relay races and wide games, in addition to introductory gymnastics activities – Artistic • Artistic gymnastics falls into two main categories: men’s artistic gymnastics and women’s artistic gymnastics. The first comprises six apparatus: floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bar • The second comprises four apparatus: vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor. Students will be exposed to all of the above – Rhythmic Gymnastics • This sport uses five apparatus to develop coordination, flexibility, strength and grace. The ball, the hoop, the clubs, the rope and the ribbon are all manipulated in intricate and complex maneuvers to create a visual spectacle – Trampoline and tumbling • There are three events: trampoline, tumbling and double mini. Students will be challenged with basic skills such as handstands and cartwheels. On the trampoline, they will be taught safe landing positions and various safety skills • Using the double mini trampoline students will be challenged with skills to the feet onto mats and also into the foam pit. We work on skills based on the athlete’s level from beginner to advanced – Gymnastics Combo • Kids experience circuits of fun in artistic, rhythmic trampoline and tumbling skills Saville lunch program available or bring your own lunch

Location: North Campus. Meet at E-19 (Dance Studio), lower level, Van Vliet Centre. Have fun and experiment in a camp filled with a variety of fitness and recreation activities just for girls! This camp may include a wide variety of activities e.g. indoor wall climbing, kayaking, dance, resistance training, mind-body group exercises, self-defence, aerobics, and a nutrition presentation.

They focus on a particular sport or sports and offer players a chance to learn or develop their game. Coaches promote teamwork, cooperation and a spirit of good sportsmanship and all take place in a fun, inclusive learning environment. Combo camps include instruction in two or more sports.
Aquatics Competitive Swimming (7-11 and 12-19 years) Focuses on improving basic components of the four competitive strokes, turns and starts for competitive swimmers. Includes: – Stroke drills and technique training; concentration on proper stroke mechanics and on stroke efficiency – Dry land sessions focus on strength, co-ordination, flexibility and reaction time – Aerobic training in the pool and on land – Utilization of underwater video software Swimming sessions and dry land training are lead by current or former Golden Bears or Pandas swimmers with NCCP coaching certification in swimming. For over 20-years we have been introducing children and youth to the sport of tennis through our Golden Bear Summer Sports Camps. Co-ed camps cater to beginner to advanced players. Camps Include: Tennis instruction by NCCP certified coaches & Golden Bear and Panda tennis team members, a modified tournament, and an official camp t-shirt Players may bring their own racquet, or we will supply a racquet if needed. Girls’ and Boys’ Volleyball Development Programs (12-18 years) Location: Saville Community Sports Centre – 11610 65 Avenue The University of Alberta is proud to work in conjunction with the Alberta Volleyball Association to run our volleyball development programming. Our volleyball development program focuses on: – Developing and refining the fundamental individual skills of the game – Learning skills that are used within the constructs of team systems, concepts and game play – Volleyball Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model. Each participant will undergo gross and fine motor skill performance measures and will receive a report card indicating his or her individual strengths and weaknesses Coaches include current and former members of the Pandas and Golden Bears volleyball teams and various quality community-based coaches. Sport Performance Camps The Saville Community Sports Centre Fitness Centre at South Campus and the Fitness and Lifestyle Centre at North Campus are Accredited Fitness Appraisal Centres. Instructors are current Fitness and Lifestyle Centre employees. All hold certifications as AFLCA resistance training leaders or as Certified Personal Trainers and Exercise Physiologists (CSEP).
Kids’ Sport Conditioning (8-11 years) Location: S outh Campus. Saville Community Sports Centre, 11520 - 65 Avenue, Edmonton Meet at the Saville Community Sports Centre Fitness Centre Teaches young athletes the foundational components of athleticism in a fun, dynamic and motivating environment. Children between the ages of 8 and 11 are at the peak stage for nervous system development. Registration, cancellation, refund and transfer policies Registrations – Separate registration forms required for each participant – one per child – Parents/guardians must sign an informed consent agreement for each participant before camp begins – Informed consent agreement must be completed and returned to U of A prior to camp beginning. No participation is possible without this being done. – Please provide alternative choices. While we will try to accommodate your first choice request, this may not always be possible. – If a camp is full, your child can be waitlisted for a class; we will contact you if a place becomes available. Cancellations – Cancellation requests must be received by the Activity Registration Zone prior to the start of the camp. Effective June 15 2013 – Conditions: • 25 percent cancellation fee levied on cancellations received five or more working days prior to the start of the camp • 50 percent cancellation fee levied on cancellations received zero to four working days prior to the start of the camp • In case of illness or injury: – Prior to camp, a request to cancel must be accompanied by a medical certificate. Refund in full, less a $15.00 administration fee. – No refund if injury or illness occurs after camp starts – No refund for no-shows Once the applicable cancellation fee has been levied, you have the choice of receiving a refund or credit: Refund – a $15 administration fee will be assessed for all refunds How you’ll be refunded: – If the original payment was by credit card, the refund will be credited to the card used for the original payment – If the original payment was by cash or cheque, you will be refunded by cheque. This takes 3 – 6 weeks – If the original payment was by debit card, the fee will be refunded to your debit card if you request the refund in person, or by cheque Credit – The camp fee will be credited to your account and may be used towards camps or other programs and services offered by the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation. DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES The following activities that your child may participate in during the Children’s Sport and Activity Camp are: • Crafts – cut and paste, painting • Curling – on ice sliding, brush work technique • Fitness Instruction – stability, strength, plyometrics, flexibility, cardiovascular training • Gymnastics – apparatus work, trampoline, tumbling • Swimming – scuba diving, synchronized swimming, kayaking/paddling, stroke development, diving, underwater hockey, waterpolo, leadership skills, aquatic games and activities • Team Sports/ Cooperative Games – Basketball, Hockey, Golf, Volleyball, Track and Field. Football, Soccer • Tennis –swing and serve techniques, games and activities • Wall Climbing – bouldering, harnessed high wall climbs, rappelling, skateboarding, and outdoor games ASSUMPTION OF RISKS In consideration of my child’s participation in the above noted Camp and all related activities, I and my child acknowledge that we are aware of, appreciate and accept the inherent physical risks and the other possible RISKS, DANGERS, AND HAZARDS associated with being a participant, including the possible risk of severe or fatal injury to my child or others. These risks include but are not limited to: a) all manner of injuries resulting in muscular injuries and soft tissue injuries including bruises, scrapes, cuts, etc, from executing strenuous and physically demanding physical techniques, collisions with the wall, floor, uneven playing surfaces, contact with other participants (including spotters whose role is to enhance safety and learning) and failure in proper use of equipment either by my child, or other participants of the University; b) all manner of injuries resulting from the mechanical failure of apparatus/equipment; c) all manner of injuries resulting in dislocations, concussion, hematomas, whiplash, contusions, sprains, pulled or strained muscles, knee injuries, and broken bones; d) transmission of diseases in various ways and types from contact with other participants resulting in death, disease or other illnesses; e) all manner of head, neck, spinal, facial, eye, nose and/or dental injuries; f) all manner of injuries resulting from heat cramps, and heat stroke during hot summer days; g) all manner of injuries and/or death that may result from transition between facilities h) that my child’s risk of injury increases as they become fatigued;. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . In case of an accident or incident, I agree to release Ortona Gymnastics Club, its directors and/or instructors from any responsibility for recovery or loss or damage resulting therefrom.
