Winter 2017
Winter wonderland
As the temperatures dip, take some time out in the capital to experience one good thing after another. From warming eats to cultural pursuits and winter wonderland adventures, it’s all waiting for you in Canberra.
TRUFFLES GALORE
CULTURE VULTURES
Now in its ninth consecutive year, The Truffle Festival — Canberra Region is the first and largest festival of its kind in Australia.
Canberra will inspire your creativity this winter as it welcomes exhibitions, performances and festivals that celebrate the arts.
Each year from June to August more than 250 individual events are held across the Canberra region highlighting French Black Winter Truffles. Participating venues offer a range of opportunities to taste and experience the magic of these highly-prized gems. Indulge in the special flavours and aromas of truffle dishes at local restaurants and cafes. Join a hunt and see for yourself how the talented dogs unearth truffles. Learn from the chefs and other truffle experts at a cooking class or demonstration or pop along to a farmer’s market. It’s the ultimate foodie festival.
The Canberra Writers Festival (25–27 August) returns with a jam-packed program of authors with works spanning genres and the globe. Opera aficionados, symphony orchestra enthusiasts and chamber choir fanatics will be spoiled for choice as a series of galas and performances take place in awe-inspiring locations including the High Court of Australia, National Gallery of Australia and Llewellyn Hall at The Australian National University. Expect the high calibre of performances to continue on stage as the Canberra Theatre Centre brings world-class performance to the nation’s capital, including 1984, Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Bennelong and Sarah Blasko’s The Soloist Tour. Make your way around Canberra’s galleries and museums to see diverse exhibitions from woodblock prints used to illustrate novels at Melodrama in Meiji Japan at the National Library of Australia, to an installation that will have you wrapped in blankets taking in videos by Pipilotti Rist at Worry will vanish revelation at the National Gallery of Australia.

THE MEETING PLACE FOR RECONCILIATION This year the nation reflects on two significant anniversaries in Australia’s reconciliation journey — 50 years since the 1967 referendum, and 25 years since the historic Mabo decision. National Reconciliation Week (27 May–3 June) will see special events held at several national attractions, including a special viewing of the Federation Gallery at the National Archives to see the Constitution Alterations (Aboriginals) Act 1967 (Cth) and Defying Empire: National Indigenous Art Triennial at the National Gallery of Australia. Return later in the season for NAIDOC Week (2–9 July) to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. At the National Library of Australia, view some of the earliest records of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages within its manuscript collection. Prevailing Voices — Indigenous Australian Parliamentarians at Parliament House brings together works from the Parliament House Art Collection, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and the National Portrait Gallery of Australia for the first time. The exhibition recognises and celebrates the contributions of Indigenous parliamentarians to the Australian Parliament.
INDULGE AND RECONNECT Winter is the perfect time to escape with your loved ones and enjoy a luxurious mini-break in Canberra. Begin your day with a serene hot air balloon ride above Canberra as you take in the sweeping views from all angles. After that, grab a coffee from The Cupping Room or one of the ONA establishments — home to reigning Australian Barista Champion Hugh Kelly and National Brewers’ Cup title winner Sam Corra. Spend your day learning a new skill like glass making at the Canberra Glassworks, meandering through one of Canberra’s markets or taking in the sights at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Catch a flick at Palace Electric Cinema or a cult Aussie classic as part of the NFSA Restores series at the National Film and Sound Archive. Enjoy a fireplace feast with seasonal local produce at one of our award-winning restaurants in the Braddon, NewActon or Kingston Foreshore precincts. And what would a romantic escape be without some vino? Sample the best of the Canberra district’s vineyards straight from the source by exploring regions such as the nearby Yass Valley, or head to a wine or cocktail bar to find your perfect drop.
Spoil yourself with a horse ride and Canberra district wines at Burnelee Excursions on Horseback.
GET OUT AND ABOUT Head out and explore the bush capital over winter. Corin Forest is Canberra’s home of snow — just a 45-minute drive from Canberra and you’ll be able to enjoy tobogganing, skiing and more — an experience the whole family can enjoy (snow conditions permitting). Got energy to burn? Stromlo Forest Park is a world-class mountainbiking facility only 15 minutes from Canberra — expert riders will love the new Vapour Trail, but there’s also plenty for beginners to cut their teeth on.
Enjoy a scenic horse ride and lunch with Burnelee Excursions on Horseback, a unique way to enjoy the Canberra region. And sports fans, there’s plenty for you to get excited about. Get warmed up for the Rugby League World Cup’s Canberra matches (29 October–10 November) with Canberra Raiders winter home matches at GIO Stadium Canberra as the Broncos, Cowboys, Dragons, Storm, Panthers and Knights come to town. The stadium will also see the Plus500 Brumbies take on the Rebels in June. GWS Giants hope to continue their stellar season as they play host to Melbourne Demons at UNSW Canberra Oval in Manuka.
What’s on throughout winter There’s fun for all the family at Corin Forest in winter.
