CANBERRA EVENTS Spring 2014
Spring events
Celebrate spring with a weekend getaway in the national capital. Explore more than one million blooms at Floriade, taste handcrafted beer at Canberra’s microbreweries, cheer on the Australian cricket team at Manuka Oval, and shop up a storm at local markets.
NIGHTFEST LIGHT SPECTACULAR The festival atmosphere of Floriade comes alive after dark for five nights only as Commonwealth Park transforms into an illuminated wonderland for the ticketed twilight event, Floriade NightFest (24 to 28 September). Enjoy fantastic food and wine, brilliant lighting designs and bustling night markets, as well as performances from world renowned comedians, including Luke McGregor and Tom Gleeson, roving entertainers and more. floriadeaustralia.com/nightfest
WESTSIDE AT ACTON PARK
BOUTIQUE BREWERIES
A pop up village at West Basin, a short walk over the footbridge from the trendy NewActon precinct, is the city’s newest lakeside destination opening in time for Floriade. It features buildings made out of shipping containers and bars, coffee, retail start-ups and a large entertainment space known as Stomping Ground which will be used for cultural and sporting events. There is a viewing platform offering some great new vantage points of the city and free public WiFi. The project is managed by the Stomping Ground Collective who are behind the popular Braddon cafe Lonsdale Street Roasters — a local coffee chain which continues to pop up at various locations across Canberra. Open Thursdays–Sundays. westsideactonpark.com.au
Explore Canberra’s microbreweries and sample a variety of locally-made handcrafted boutique beer. One of Australia’s most respected and awarded brewers, Richard Watkins, recently opened Bentspoke Brewing Co. in Braddon with Tracy Margrain. With the brewery on full display you can watch the head brewer hard at work on the next batch as you try the latest brew and enjoy pub-style food. BentSpoke Brewing Co. joins Zierholz Premium Brewery and the Wig & Pen Tavern and Brewery offering handcrafted beer in Canberra. Sample a variety of German food and beer and celebrate Oktoberfest with music and performances. (1 to 4 November). visitcanberra.com.au

INTERNATIONAL CRICKET CLASH Manuka Oval in Canberra will host a one-day international cricket match between Australia and South Africa on 19 November. Australia’s clash against South Africa will be just the second time the national team has played in Canberra. The highly anticipated match will take place under lights at the refurbished oval and is part of a five-game series between the sides. ticketek.com.au
SHOP UP A STORM Pick up a bargain, taste local produce or find a gem at Canberra’s thriving markets. The multi award-winning Old Bus Depot Markets in Kingston is a Sunday institution, renowned for handcrafted jewellery, art, clothing, furniture, toys as well as regional food and wine. Visit the award-winning Handmade Market (4 to 5 October) at the National Convention Centre and browse Australian designers’ ware. Be tantalised by the array of fruit, vegetables, plants, pastries, meats, cheese at Canberra’s fresh produce markets, including the Capital Region Farmers Market, the Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets or Belconnen Fresh Food Markets. visitcanberra.com.au
FAMILY DINING Take the family out to some of the many family friendly cafes and restaurants. Enjoy Chinese/Malaysian at Timmy’s Kitchen in Manuka or Turkish at the Turkish Pide House in Woden and the city. Wagamama in the North Quarter of the Canberra Centre caters for ‘mini noodlers’ with Asian-inspired kids’ meals. For pizzas and other Italian fare, Bicicletta in NewActon is popular. La Cantina, in Narrabundah, also offers family friendly Italian dining. For budget dining, try the Food Court Family Restaurant in Dickson, where the buffet features seafood, pasta, Chinese, salads and dessert, along with free soft drink refills. visitcanberra.com.au
EXPLORE THE BOTANIC GARDENS Picnic on the manicured lawns while watching native birds and water dragons at play or take a stroll through the rainforest gully at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Set on 40 hectares, you can walk among more than 70,000 native plants and see many endangered species, including the rare Wollemi Pine. Be transported to the outback with the new Red Centre Garden which features plants and landscapes from the dry Central Australian region. The cafe is a great spot to recharge with a bite to eat. anbg.gov.au
PASSION INSPIRES FLORIADE Inspired by the theme, Passion, Canberra’s national award-winning spring festival returns with more than one million blooms throughout Commonwealth Park (13 September until 12 October). Be amazed by stunning garden beds, horticultural workshops, engaging demonstrations, kids’ entertainment and NightFest. Floriade will kick off with Arts and Culture week and The Edible Balcony author Indira Naidoo. You can unearth the capital’s most creative treasures, participate in a life drawing class or try flower arranging. Sip some of the capital region’s wines, sample the best local produce and try bush foods as week two focuses on Food and Wine with Miguel Maestre. Floriade promises hours of entertainment for kids and adults alike as week three explores Family Fun with Bindi Irwin, while week four is the perfect time to rediscover Outdoors and Adventure with Barry Du Bois, sustainability workshops and gardening tips from experts. floriadeaustralia.com
