CANBERRA EVENTS Autumn 2015
Autumn events Fantastic festivals, blockbuster exhibitions, new dining delights and celebrations on a national scale set the stage for an action-packed autumn in Canberra.
ILLUMINATED CAPITAL The Parliamentary Triangle will transform into a vibrant hive of activity for the Enlighten festival, all set against a backdrop of stunning architectural projections, which will shine a light on some of Australia’s most iconic attractions. Over 10 illuminated nights from 27 February to 7 March visitors can enjoy free and ticketed events including blockbuster exhibitions and rare film screenings, live music and performances, stand-up comedy, thrilling tours into the depths of national attractions and exclusive dining experiences. Adding to the feast of illumination is the new Enlighten Night Noodle Markets, where visitors will tuck into authentic Asian eats. enlightencanberra.com
REMEMBERING THE ANZACS
SPECTACULAR BALLOON FESTIVAL
Canberra’s Anzac Day Dawn Service is one of the nation’s most moving ceremonies. Gather with thousands of Australians at the Australian War Memorial in the pre-dawn light on 25 April to commemorate the first military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Experience the emotion of the lone bugler playing The Last Post. Leave a poppy on the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier. After the ceremony, gain a true understanding of our Anzacs’ experiences and explore the Memorial’s new First World War exhibition, Australia in the Great War, commemorating the centenary of the First World War. awm.gov.au
See the Lawns of Old Parliament House fill with a flurry of colour and movement from 7 to 15 March, as giant hot air balloons inflate around iconic attractions and slowly drift into the Canberra sky. Held over nine days, pilots will begin laying out and inflating their balloons on the lawns of Old Parliament House before they ascend into the sky to create an exhilarating back drop to our national attractions within the Parliamentary Triangle. Canberra is one of the few places in the world where hot air balloons can fly close to houses of government and buildings of national significance. events.act.gov.au

CANBERRA’S AUTUMN COLOURS
CANBERRA TAKES CENTRE STAGE
In autumn, the brilliant reds and oranges of the deciduous trees in the suburbs are stunning and one of the best ways to experience their beauty is from above. Drive, cycle, walk or even run up Mount Ainslie to get a magnificent perspective of Canberra’s buildings, monuments and natural beauty. At Red Hill, look out over many of our national icons south of the city centre. Follow one of the walking tracks on Black Mountain for picture perfect views or explore the National Arboretum Canberra for a fantastic outlook across Lake Burley Griffin and west towards Mount Stromlo. visitcanberra.com.au
The Canberra Comedy Festival returns from 17 to 22 March with an even bigger lineup. Some of Australia’s favourite comedy acts including John Safran, Peter Helliar, Cal Wilson and the Umbilical Brothers will take to the stage. The Australian Ballet celebrates its first performance on the Canberra Theatre stage 50 years ago with the classic romantic ballet Giselle in May. Le Noir — The dark side of Cirque in May offers a special theatrical experience featuring 20 of the greatest circus performers on the planet, many former stars of Cirque du Soleil. canberratheatrecentre.com.au
GET ACTIVE IN THE CAPITAL
TEMPT YOUR TASTEBUDS
Why not get active in Canberra this autumn and take part in some sporting challenges? The inaugural CBR100 Challenge will see teams of three tackle a 25km, 50km walk/run or 100km run for solo competitors while taking in some of the capital’s most extraordinary sights and locations along the brand new Centenary Trail on 21 and 22 March. For keen runners the 2015 Australian Running Festival returns on 11 and 12 April and caters from a 5km run to a 50km Ultra Marathon. visitcanberra.com.au
Canberra’s ever evolving food scene welcomed some new additions. In the city centre, Akiba brings ‘New Asian’ cuisine. Braddon has French favourite Les Bistronomes, Frugii Dessert Laboratory in the new Ori complex, and the Hamlet — an urban village for street food vendors including BrodDogs, Nookie Espresso and Mr Papa. In Canberra’s south Chifley’s Bar and Grill opened in the historic Hotel Kurrajong in Barton, the popular Pressed Juices is in Manuka and Japanese arrived in Barton with the new Lilotang. outincanberra.com.au
