JAMES TURRELL: A RETROSPECTIVE

A bumper events calendar places Canberra on a global stage this summer. Canberra Stadium is the venue for six pool matches and a quarter final of the AFC Asian Cup in January, while the historic Manuka Oval comes alive with world-class cricket when it hosts three ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 matches in February and March. Don’t miss the day-night match when the Prime Minister’s XI team of talented young cricketers takes on England under lights on 14 January. A packed Manuka Oval is also expected on 28 January when Canberra hosts the T20 Big Bash League final. visitcanberra.com.au

Experience 50 works tracing five decades of American artist James Turrell’s career from early light projections and holograms through to immersive light installations at the National Gallery of Australia. Exclusive to Canberra, the exhibition will feature spectacular installations purpose-built in Canberra, plus new acquisitions, drawings, prints and photographs from 13 December to 8 June. Visitors to the National Gallery of Australia will recognise Turrell’s work from the stunning Within without space which opened outside the gallery in 2010. nga.gov.au/JamesTurrell

CELEBRATE AUSTRALIA DAY

LIGHT UP FOR CHRISTMAS

Australia’s capital is home to some of the nation’s biggest Australia Day celebrations. The lawns of Parliament House is the place to be on 25 January, with the Australia Celebrates Live concert featuring some of the hottest names in Australian music and the announcement of the Australian of the Year awards. Commonwealth Park by Lake Burley Griffin is the venue for a day of festivities on Australia Day, 26 January, which culminates with a fireworks finale. events.act.gov.au

Throughout December Canberra’s city centre will be a spectacular site illuminated by millions of lights in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest LED image display in the world. From London Circuit through to Bunda Street, visitors to the city will be witness to the most spectacular display of lights the world has ever seen, including the city’s iconic merry-go-round which will be decorated in 200,000 lights. This charitable event from Friday 28 November until New Year’s Eve will create a magical backdrop while raising funds for SIDS & Kids ACT. inthecitycanberra.com.au

CINEMA EXPERIENCE OUTDOORS Summer is the season for outdoor cinema in the national capital. The Sunset Cinema Canberra will return to the Australian National Botanic Gardens from 14 November to 20 December with a fantastic range of films. Summer weather makes this outdoor cinema perfect for picnicking under the stars while watching family flicks, action films, love stories and blockbuster new releases. The annual short film festival Tropfest will be screened live via satellite on 7 December at Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park. The Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinemas at the Patrick White lawns, National Library of Australia, is also a crowd favourite, from 18 January to 22 February with a stellar line-up and the popular Sundae Sessions. visitcanberra.com.au

MEMORIAL MARKS FIRST WORLD WAR CENTENARY To mark 100 years since the declaration of the First World War, the Australian War Memorial is running a Roll of Honour Soundscape and Roll of Honour Name Projections. Recordings of school children from across Australia saying the names of each of the 62,000 Australians who died during the First World War will play at the Memorial’s Roll of Honour for the next four years. The Roll of Honour Name Projections will see those same names projected onto the exterior of the Hall of Memory. These programs are powerful additions to the Australian War Memorial’s rich collection and fascinating exhibitions including a redeveloped First World War gallery. awm.gov.au
