AUBERGINE GRIFFITH | MODERN AUSTRALIAN | $$$$ With two chef hats under its belt once again, Aubergine prides itself on using seasonal produce with a creative flair. Chef Ben Willis has been at the helm of the suburban restaurant since 2008. After returning from working in London, he saw a hole in the market for fine dining with a more casual twist. And it’s proven to be a winning formula. Aubergine sources produce locally, and the four-course $90-per-person menu changes constantly. Examples of dishes are spiced duck breast with caramelised endive, carrot and orange puree, kingfish steamed with kaffir lime, and brown butter ice cream with hazelnut praline. Plus, the wine list is exceptional. (02) 6260 8666 aubergine.com.au

INSIDER INTERVIEW
CREATIVE ENDEAVOURS
As director of Canberra’s National Portrait Gallery, Angus Trumble knows a thing or two about art. Here he reveals his favourite creative experiences in the capital.
I can spend hours at… The National Library of Australia ((02) 6262 1111, nla.gov.au) in its marvellous Treasures Gallery, or peacefully hunting for items of obscure knowledge. I still trust books, mostly old ones. I love heading back in time at… The National Museum of Australia (1800 026 132, nma.gov.au) and exploring the exhibitions and objects. The same is true of the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House ((02) 6270 8222, moadoph. gov.au), where, just now, you can see Sir Edmund Barton’s amazing coatee which must have been run up for the Coronation of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1902.
I learn something each time I go to... The National Portrait Gallery ((02) 6102 7000, portrait.gov.au) and envision what it’s like to be a visitor and what impression our institution makes on somebody who might be crossing the threshold for the first time. The collection is the perfect combination of social history and art, though I say it myself! More Australians should visit the… House of Representatives at Parliament House ((02) 6277 7111, aph.gov.au). We are pretty tough on our elected representatives, but you almost always leave the chamber having formed a far better impression than the one you glean from snippets on the news.

TIDBINBILLA NATURE RESERVE
Indigenous BUSHWALKING TRAILS There’s no better place to begin an exploration of Canberra’s Indigenous heritage than at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve ((02) 6205 1233, tidbinbilla.act.gov.au). Located at the foothills of the Australian Alps, just 40 minutes’ drive southwest from Canberra, the reserve contains several sites of Aboriginal significance and a couple of trails you can walk on your own. The Birrigai Time Trail (3km) is an easy walk across grassland to the Birrigai Aboriginal Rock Shelter, where you can see an ancient hearth dating back more than 20,000 years to around the time of the last Ice Age. Tools used during the Pleistocene
epoch have also been unearthed here. A quicker walk (500m) takes you to Hanging Rock, an undercut granite boulder once used as shelter. Alternatively, you can sign up for one of the ranger-guided activities, including walks led by Indigenous rangers, that are conducted on weekends, public holidays and select days during school holidays. Expect to see native animals like kangaroos, koalas, wombats and emus along the way. Tidbinbilla adjoins the larger Namadgi National Park (environment.act.gov.au) which, at more than 100,000 hectares, comprises 46 per cent of the ACT. Aboriginal people have had a long association with Namadgi and there are many Aboriginal heritage sites there, including rock art, stone tools, quarry sites, stone arrangements and campsites. Find out more about the region from an Indigenous ranger on a Murumbung Yurung Murra cultural tour. There are also plenty of walks throughout Namadgi, ranging from ones suitable for day-trippers to the 650km Australian Alps Walking Track.

TIDBINBILLA NATURE RESERVE are more than 7500 works by Indigenous people, starting with the foyer’s display of 200 hollow log coffins. Created by 43 artists from Central Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, in 1988 to represent the previous two centuries of European occupation, the display is a memorial to the Indigenous people who lost their lives during this time. As you venture inside the gallery, you’ll find artworks and artefacts from a range of sources and eras, including Western Desert paintings, watercolours by the Hermannsburg School and contemporary pieces by Aboriginal artists working in urban settings.

CULTURE
INSIDE OR OUTDOORS, CANBERRA OFFERS MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF AUSTRALIA’S INDIGENOUS PEOPLE
Arts & Culture BRINGING CULTURES TOGETHER The National Museum of Australia (1800 026 132, nma.gov.au) has a variety of exhibits of significant Indigenous items ranging from 1970s dot paintings to Evonne Goolagong Cawley’s Wimbledon singles trophies and the sketchbook of a 19th century Aboriginal man. The First Australians is the largest gallery in the museum, offering different stories and experiences, while the Torres Strait Island gallery focuses on the history and vitality of Australia’s most northerly region.

you to imagine what life in Canberra was like 20,000 years ago. The trail begins at the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre ((02) 6205 6645, communityservices.act.gov.au/atsia/ cultural_centre) and takes you past locations of significance to the Indigenous inhabitants, ending at the Mt Ainslie Lookout (13 22 81, canberratracks. act.gov.au). Information placards along the route explain the importance of the locations, which were used for a variety of purposes – from hosting neighbouring clans to marriage and initiation ceremonies.
ABORIGINAL TENT EMBASSY It started off as a beach umbrella and sign erected opposite Old Parliament House by four Aboriginal men – Michael Anderson, Billy Craigie, Bertie Williams and Tony Coorey – on Australia Day, 1972 to protest the rejection of land rights by the then government. Quickly, support for the “Aboriginal Embassy” grew, especially when footage of police violently dismantling the tents aired on the evening news. Destroyed again by a storm in 1974, it also faced an arson attack and various relocations, before being re-established in its original position in 1992. Now, the Aboriginal Tent Embassy has been given heritage status and remains a symbol of the struggle by Australia’s Indigenous population to have their native title recognised and to bring about an end to discrimination.
INSIDER INTERVIEW
NATURAL SELECTION
Regional manager of Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and Namadgi National Park, Brett McNamara, shares some of his favourite natural (and man-made) spots in the Canberra area.
The most fascinating place is… The Wetlands Sanctuary at Tidbinbilla. To spend some time observing a playful platypus is simply majestic. The perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. My favourite way to blow off some steam is with… A rigorous walk up Stockyard spur within Namadgi National Park. There’s nothing better than getting the heart rate up while taking in the sheer beauty of the Brindabella Ranges. If I want a sweet treat, I visit… Red Brick Espresso ((02) 6285 1668, redbrickespresso.com.au), a wonderful little boutique hideaway nestled in
amongst the Curtin Shops. They know how to make coffee dreams come true. For a last-minute gift I go to... The Pialligo precinct. With a fantastic array of speciality shops – from smokehouse gourmet delights to unique little garden nursery treasures – you’re sure to find something special. There is always a feel-good atmosphere at… The National Arboretum Canberra (13 22 81, nationalarboretum.act.gov. au). There is something just wonderful about immersing yourself in this environment with stunning views across our beautiful bush capital.

TIDBINBILLA NATURE RESERVE Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is an iconic place to encounter native wildlife in their natural setting. Nestled at the base of the Tidbinbilla Range, the reserve is only a 40 minute drive south-west of Canberra’s city centre. Located within the reserve is a Wildlife Sanctuary Area of five ponds and weirs abundant with wildlife including platypus. There is an over 80% chance of seeing these rare and usually elusive animals! Other native animals you may encounter include koalas, emus, pelicans, brolgas, kangaroos and many bird and reptile species. Tidbinbilla is also a leader in conservation with a Threatened Species Breeding Program focusing on the Northern Corroboree Frog, Southern BrushTailed Rock-Wallaby and the Eastern Bettong.
The landscape of the reserve is spectacular and varied with mountain ranges, peaceful dry eucalypt forests, woodlands, sheltered streams, majestic open grasslands and calming wetlands. Facilities include the Visitor Centre, barbecues, picnic tables and playground. You can explore the reserve and experience all it has to offer by joining one of our popular ranger guided activities. Tidbinbilla has a rich cultural landscape dating back over 25 000 years and is the traditional Country of the Ngunnawal people. The Tidbinbilla Valley also reflects the European history of the area with historic homesteads and evidence of farming scattered throughout the reserve. Unique accommodation is available at one of the historic homesteads, Nils Desperandum.

GOLD CREEK VILLAGE An unexpected delight in Canberra’s north, Gold Creek Village has something for all the family. If you’re looking for family fun, you’ve come to the right place — there’s plenty to fill a whole day in Gold Creek Village. It’s been around for nearly 40 years, but Cockington Green Gardens ((02) 6230 2273, cockingtongreen.com.au) never goes out of style. You could spend hours marvelling over the highly-detailed miniature buildings and figurines, with sound and movement bringing scenes to life. Step through the mouth of a giant Tyrannosaurus Rex and be swept up in a prehistoric adventure where dinosaurs roam free at the National Dinosaur Museum ((02) 6230 2655, nationaldinosaurmuseum. com.au). From fossils to robotic dinosaurs, exhibits trace Earth’s dynamic geological history. The guided tours are great fun (no matter how old you are!) Follow the Poacher’s Way for a taste of what the area has to offer. You’ll be accompanied by experienced instructors, who’ll point out the local wildlife. You can even have a go at mustering sheep and cattle! BRAIDWOOD YASS
ALPACA PRODUCTS AUSTRALIA

1300 554 114
ALPACAS COMMUNICATE USING A VARIETY OF SOUNDS, INCLUDING CLICKS AND SNORTS, BUT ARE BEST KNOWN FOR THEIR HUMMING, WHICH IS SOOTHING TO ANIMALS AND HUMANS.
After a few minutes in this picturesque place, which is just over an hour east of Canberra, it will become obvious why Braidwood was the first town added to the NSW State Heritage Registry in its entirety. Historic buildings like the Braidwood Museum (186 Wallace St, (02) 4842 2310, braidwoodmuseum.org.au) and the Royal Mail Hotel (145 Wallace St, (02) 4842 2488, royalmailhotelbraidwood.com), which was used as a location in the 1970 film Ned Kelly (and is home to the odd ghost, reportedly!), line the streets, while local antique shops provide another glimpse into the town’s past. And the annual “Airing of the Quilts”, in November is a must for craft lovers.
UPPER LACHLAN Heading north for just over an hour will bring you to this region. Visitors flock to the stunning Wombeyan Caves, estimated
Beyond Canberra to be between 400 and 430 million years old. Another highlight of the area is the alpaca farm at Alpaca Products Australia (24 Reservoir Rd, (02) 4832 2907, alpacaproductsaustralia.com.au), five minutes from the town of Crookwell where you can enjoy a hands-on experience with these remarkable animals.
GOULBURN-MULWAREE Australia’s first inland city, Goulburn, lies around an hour northeast of Canberra. Soak up the local history or, for more modern entertainment, head to Wakefield Park (4770 Braidwood Rd, Tirrannaville, (02) 4822 2811, wakefieldpark.com.au) and drive a race-prepared vehicle around the circuit – accompanied by a professional, of course. Thrill seekers might also want to visit Adrenalin Skydive (59 Airport Rd, Brisbane Grove, (02) 9042 2000, askydive. com.au) for a bird’s-eye view of the region.
QUEANBEYAN-PALERANG Fifteen minutes east of Canberra and just outside the ACT border is the region of Queanbeyan-Palerang, an important centre during the 1850s gold rush. Queanbeyan itself is home to a number of historic buildings and museums, including the 1880 brick cottage that houses the Queanbeyan Art Society Gallery (6 Trinculo Pl, (02) 6297 8181, qarts.com.au) and holds art classes

daily. On the first Saturday of the month (except January), the Captains Flats Country Markets are well worth a trip. captainsflat.org/markets.htm
HILLTOPS Less than one hour west of Canberra is the Hilltops region, which each year attracts crowds of foodies and wine lovers keen to sample the local specialties. A highlight of the Hilltops calendar is the annual National Cherry Festival, held in Young on the first weekend in December at the height of the cherry-picking season. Key events include the cherry pie eating contest and the street parade. visithilltopsregion.com.au
BUNGENDORE You can easily drive to this town, which lies around 30 minutes east of Canberra, or you can make the journey on the restored vintage train that regularly makes the trip ((02) 6232 6405, canberrarailwaymuseum. org/the-stockmans). Once in Bungendore, which served as a crossroads for those travelling between the coast, Goulburn, Queanbeyan and the Snowy Mountains, you’ll find a laidback town full of local galleries like Bungendore Wood Works Gallery (22 Malbon St, (02) 6238 1682, bungendorewoodworks.com.au) and Bungendore Art Connection (33 Gibraltar St, (02) 6238 1500, bungendoreart.com.au).

NATIONAL PARKS & RESERVES TIDBINBILLA NATURE RESERVE See some of Australia’s most iconic creatures in their natural environments just 40 minutes’ drive south of Canberra. Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (Paddy’s River Rd, (02) 6205 1233, tidbinbilla.act.gov.au) can be explored independently along one of the 22 marked trails or on a ranger-guided tour. Close by is the alpine playground of Corin Forest (Corin Rd, Tidbinbilla Range, (02) 6235 7333, corin.com.au), which offers a snow experience on Canberra’s doorstep. Don’t miss the Alpine Slide!
NAMADGI NATIONAL PARK
MONSTER KITCHEN
BURNELEE EXCURSIONS ON HORSEBACK
A range of outdoor activities are on offer at this expansive national park. Mountain bikers will love the more than 400 kilometres of formed vehicle trails, some of which are also open to horse riders. In winter, be sure to check with the Namadgi Visitor Centre (Naas Rd, Tharwa, environment.act.gov.au) about any sections of the park that might be snow covered. Fishing is also permitted in some Namadgi mountain streams (although not in the dams), but make note of seasonal closures. There are three designated campgrounds at Honeysuckle Creek, Orroral Valley and Mount Clear. Book online or at the Visitor Centre.

Beyond Canberra THE SLOPES SNOWY MOUNTAINS It doesn’t have to be winter for you to enjoy the wonders of the Snowy Mountains. Obviously, there’s much fun to be had during the snow season, but the region, which forms part of the Australian Alps, is also well worth a visit during the warmer months. In spring and summer, the snow melts to form clear alpine streams full of fish that flow into the lakes of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme, where water sports are popular pastimes. Bushwalkers will enjoy the challenges of the rugged mountain terrain on Mt Kosciuszko and Main Range, and marvel at the carpet of wildflowers which burst into bloom. From Canberra, it takes two or three hours (depending where you are headed) by car to reach the ski slopes, but, with plenty of towns to stop off at along the way, there’s no rush.
THREDBO
Never skied before? You’ll find Thredbo the perfect place for your first time on skis. And with more than 20 bars and restaurants, it’s also the best resort for après-ski. 1300 020 589 thredbo.com.au
PERISHER Boasting more than 3000 acres of skiable terrain and 47 lifts across its four resort areas, Perisher is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest alpine resort. Skiers of all capabilities are catered for and snowboarders are looked after with Australia’s only Superpipe. perisher.com.au
CHARLOTTE PASS A 45-minute snowcat ride from Perisher is the only way to access this snowbound resort for most of the season, making it less crowded than other destinations. Perfect for those wanting off-piste skiing. charlottepass.com.au

MT SELWYN This family-owned and operated resort is popular with parents thanks to Snow World where kids can be eased onto the slopes as well as take part in indoor educational activities. The Snow Sports School allows beginners of any age to sign up for group or private lessons. 02 6454 9488 selwynsnow.com.au
JINDABYNE The four resorts all offer on-site accommodation, but many skiers choose to stay in nearby Jindabyne, which is busy year round. In winter, skiers converge on the town for its range of accommodation options and its nightlife. During summer, keep active by going sailing or water skiing on Lake Jindabyne, mountain bike riding or walking along the foreshore. destinationjindabyne.org.au

THE SURROUNDS As you drive from Canberra to the snowfields, you’ll pass through historic Cooma, the gateway to the Alpine region. Looking for a quaint town for a lunch stop? Bredbo, Berridale and Numeralla are all a short distance from Cooma. Northwest of Cooma in the mountains themselves is Kiandra, which is known as the birthplace of skiing in Australia. A walk around the former gold mining town will take you past relics of a bygone era. Continue north from Kiandra for half an hour and you’ll reach the Yarrangobilly Caves, where you can explore the limestone caves on a guided or self-guided tour, see frozen waterfalls and swim in a natural thermal bathing pool. Further north again and just on the other side of the mountains is Tumut, the perfect place to unwind for a few days. (02) 6454 9597 nationalparks.nsw.gov.au

The top of Kosciusko with a full moon. Thredbo Resort offers fullmoon walks – it’s more a summer thing. You have a nightcap when the full moon rises. It’s beautiful. If friends come to visit, where’s one place you always take them? My favourite bend on the Thredbo River near Diggings Campground (Kosciuszko Rd, Jindabyne, (02) 6450 5600, nationalparks. nsw.gov.au). You can drive in and walk to it, but there are numerous beautiful spots you can access by mountain bike on the Thredbo Valley track. Which local shops are worth checking out? Flynn’s Wrecking Yard just outside Cooma (408 Snowy Mountains Hwy, Cooma, (02) 6452 1866). It’s an amazing place – there are all these old car bodies. It’s an untapped tourist destination. All three op shops in Cooma are pretty damn good, too.

SOUTH COAST Not far from Canberra is the spectacular South Coast of New South Wales. A scenic two-hour drive is all it takes to reach stretches of unspoilt coastline, pristine beaches and all manner of wildlife-viewing opportunities.
EUROBODALLA COAST
MONTAGUE ISLAND, OFF NAROOMA
BATEMANS BAY The gateway to the Eurobodalla Coast, Batemans Bay is a popular holiday destination for Canberrans. From here, you journey north to the small village of South Durras with its private beaches and rich forests, the first stop you’ll want to make on the Coast itself.
MOGO ZOO
NELLIGEN A short distance up the Clyde River from Batemans Bay, this tranquil village is worth keeping in mind for bushwalkers who want to take on the challenging Corn Trail or those of us who’d prefer to kick back on one of the houseboats you can rent locally.
MOGO Ten minutes away from Batemans Bay is Mogo, which dates back to the 1850s gold rush. Local theme park The Original Gold Rush Colony (26 James St, (02) 4474 2123, goldrushcolony.com.au) recreates that era, while Mogo Zoo (222 Tomakin Rd, (02) 4474 4930, mogozoo.com.au) is home to more than 42 rare and exotic animal species.
MORUYA This relaxed country town on the banks of the Moruya River comes alive every October with the annual Moruya Jazz Festival. At other times of the year, you can explore the nearby beaches or the forest terrain of the Deua National Park. granitetown.com.au
NAROOMA If you’re in this picturesque coastal town between September and November, a whale-watching tour is a must. The Mill Bay Boardwalk, which extends over the water, offers more opportunities for sea life spotting.

MONTAGUE ISLAND NATURE RESERVE Just off the coast of Narooma you’ll find wildlife sanctuary Montague Island, which attracts fishing enthusiasts keen to try their luck with the kingfish, marlin and yellowfin tuna that are in abundance. Hop on board a charter or rent a boat yourself to explore the pristine waters.
TILBA TILBA Home of TV series River Cottage Australia, the Tilba region abounds with rolling green pastures, quaint villages and delicious local produce. There’s plenty of the latter each Saturday morning at the Tilba Growers’ Market (Bate St, Central Tilba, (02) 4473 7231, visitnsw.com/destinations/southcoast/batemans-bay-and-eurobodalla/ tilba/events/tilba-growers-market).
BODALLA Famed for its cheese making and other dairy products, Bodalla’s most famous location is the Bodalla Dairy Shed, a cottage-style cafe that also offers accommodation. (52 Princes Hwy, (02) 4473 5555, bodalladairyshed.com.au) WHALE WATCHING OFF MONTAGUE ISLAND

SHOALHAVEN
If you have time to venture further north of Eurobodalla, you’ll reach the Shoalhaven Coast. At Jervis Bay, the white sand at Hyams Beach is truly spectacular, while other beaches worth a visit include Seven Mile Beach and Pebbly Beach. At Currarong, the Point Perpendicular Lighthouse and Lookout offers unparalleled views from atop a dramatic escarpment, and at Huskisson, you can head out on the water to enjoy a dolphin watch cruise or sea kayak excursion. Head inland to the popular towns of Berry, Milton and Kangaroo Valley, where you’ll find charming shops and gourmet cafes. The Berry market (berry.org.au/ berry-markets) on the first Sunday of the month (except February) attracts visitors from far and wide.
SAPPHIRE COAST
South of the Eurobodalla coast, you’ll find the Sapphire Coast, which is known for its wild unspoilt coastline. About 70 per cent of the Sapphire Coast (sapphirecoast.com.au) is national park and forest, making the region perfect if you want to get back to nature. In the north, fishing village Bermagui offers a range of water activities, while Cobargo is home to a thriving local arts
and crafts scene. In the many heritage buildings, local artisans produce and sell their wares, which include pottery, leatherwork and woodcraft. Further south is the former whaling territory in Eden. You can learn all about the practice at the Eden Killer Whale
Museum (184 Imlay St, (02) 6496 2094, killerwhalemuseum.com.au) or, between September and November, watch the whales swim past on the “Humpback Highway”. Fishing enthusiasts will want to continue to Wonboyn, which is known for some of the best game fishing on the coast.
JERVIS BAY
THE SAND AT HYAMS BEACH, JERVIS BAY, IS RECOGNISED BY THE GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS AS THE WHITEST IN THE WORLD. IT IS COMPRISED OF FINE PARTICLES OF QUARTZ.

SOUTH IS BEST FOR WEST
My favourite place to go and catch up with friends is… Mister Jones Espresso Bar in Bermagui. (1/4 Bunga St, 0403 755 672, misterjones. com.au). The best breakfasts are served at… The garden at home! Though, if I’m out and about, you can’t beat the three cheese toastie from Honorbread (8 Bunga St, Bermagui, honorbread.com). It’s the breakfast of champions.
River Cottage Australia host Paul West has certainly made himself at home on the South Coast, where he runs a sustainable farm in Central Tilba. These are his favourite local spots.
There’s always a lot of fun to be had at… The beer garden at the Dromedary Hotel (Bate St, (02) 4473 7223, dromedaryhotel. com.au) on a sunny Sunday afternoon. When I want to dine out, I go to... Il Passaggio at Fishermen’s Wharf,
Bermagui (5/73-79 Lamont St, Bermagui, (02) 6493 5753, ilpassaggio.com.au). The best beach is… There are so many to choose from. Any beach in Eurobodalla or Mimosa Rocks National Park would be my pick. My favourite place to unwind is… In the water at one of those beaches. The best country drive is... Across the Monaro, down Brown Mountain and up to Tilba! One thing a lot of people don’t know about the South Coast is… The water is warmest at the end of autumn.
