BRADDON

1300 554 114
Nestled on the edge of the city centre, Braddon was a hospitality and shopping wasteland for decades. Historically home to car yards, workshops and light industry, the past 10 years has seen the precinct boom into a vibrant hub of contemporary fashion, dining and residential space. Lonsdale Street, the suburb’s major artery, has become a hotbed of day and night action. With boutique shops, bars and restaurants lining the road, a once tired and under-appreciated area is now a lively and popular destination. Few developments encapsulate the changing face of Braddon more than Ori, the mixed-use commercial space on Lonsdale Street that’s home to edgy retail outlets. Taking its name from Japanese origami that inspires its design, the industrial building is contemporary, yet acknowledges the neighbourhood’s blue-collar past.
Fashion shoppers can find everything they need in Braddon, from European style at Things of Desire to the latest threads at Rebel Muse and Pink Ink. Browse for vintage garments at Designer Op Shop and quirky items at itrip iskip, or find something special from local labels at collaborative boutique Assemblage Project. Children’s clothing is catered for at Tip You’re it! and Lellow Kids. Drop by the new Nibu x Palko buildings on Lonsdale Street for excellent food, fashion and homewares. Make sure you visit Bisonhome (bisonhome.com) and Kin Gallery (0431 052 214) while you’re there. Just a 15-minute walk from Lonsdale Street is Ainslie + Gorman Arts Centres (02 6182 0000, agac.com.au), a space for creative minds where visitors can enjoy arts and music. Featuring professional artists and heritage gardens, this tranquil setting is a city oasis where creativity flourishes.

Michael Liu works for cultural events company Dionysus and loves Canberra’s outdoors by day and the city’s finest food, drink and music by night Where is Canberra’s ultimate place to unwind? I love driving up Mount Ainslie to take in the whole city. There’s a fantastic walking track from the base of the mountain, just next to the Australian War Memorial. Also, when my family come down from Townsville, I take them on an early morning hot-air balloon ride. What are the best hidden gems? My two favourite Chinese eateries: Tak Kee Roast Inn (02 6257 4939) in Dickson, with their gorgeous roast duck and pork hanging in the window, and Happy’s (02 6249 7015, happys.com.au) in the CBD. Both are unassuming restaurants – but quick and delicious. Also, for a great collection of tasty street nosh, head to the ANU Pop-Up Reunion Village (pop-up.anu.edu.au). This hub of food trucks brings a buzzing atmosphere to the Australian National University on the edge of the CBD. Where is your favourite place to grab a drink? My second home, Knightsbridge Penthouse (02 6262 6221, knightsbridgepenthouse.com.au), where I DJ, has a great dance floor and makes a mean cocktail. I also enjoy kicking back with some wine and tapas at Parlour (02 6257 7325, parlour.net.au).

Myles Chandler, from Mocan and Green Grout café and the Goodspeed Bicycle Company in NewActon, shares his favourite Canberra hangouts Where are your go-to places to eat and drink in Canberra? Barrio Collective Coffee (barriocollective.com) is a cosy venue in the heart of Braddon that’s operated by brilliant coffee roasters and baristas. The Polish White Eagle Club (02 6248 8563, whiteeagleclub.com.au) at the O’Connor shops has a great atmosphere. We’re spoilt when it comes to these types of clubs in Canberra, with communities who share traditional meals. What other Canberra activities do you enjoy? I love cycling. Canberra has worldclass mountain biking facilities at Mount Stromlo and brilliant road cycling and cyclepath routes. The plant nurseries and landscaping businesses in Pialligo are also some of my favourite places to visit – the gardens at both Mocan and Goodspeed are very important to us. I enjoy the Capital Region Farmers Market in Mitchell (capitalregionfarmersmarket. com.au), as it makes me appreciate farmers and their produce.

Canberra Glassworks artistic director Jane Cush shares her top tips for visiting Canberra
ABOVE CENTRE: KELLY AND HORSE, 1946, BY SIR SIDNEY NOLAN, CANBERRA MUSEUM AND GALLERY
What makes Canberra a great city for art and culture? The diversity and quality of the national cultural institutions located within easy distance of each other. Then the smaller, cutting-edge organisations offer a plethora of choice. You could go to a new exhibition almost every night of the week! When is the best time to visit? Floriade in spring is an obvious time, but to limit a visit to just the tulip display means missing out on the region’s huge offerings. Our Winter Glass Market at Canberra Glassworks, for example, is on in mid-June.

PARKES • MINT • ADMISSION: $2
What is the one attraction every visitor to Canberra should see and why? The National Gallery of Australia with James Turrell’s Skyspace work Within without 2010. How does Canberra celebrate its Indigenous culture? I think Canberra was at the forefront of recognising Indigenous culture. Gough Whitlam and the Labor Party did a lot to make this happen. There isn’t much in the arts here that isn’t inclusive of Indigenous culture, from the teaching at universities through to the major art organisations and institutions.
This collection of government records traces the events and decisions that have shaped Australia. It includes documents from the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, the motion that could have saved the Whitlam government, records of wartime internment camps, colourful posters of World War II Beaufort aircraft and documents from postwar migrant families. There’s also plenty of fun stuff, such as board games played in the early 20th century, images of fashion throughout the decades, reports of UFO sightings in the desert and incoming passenger cards for The Beatles from their 1964 Australian tour. WHAT ABOUT THE KIDS? The interactive exhibit, Memory of a Nation, is always popular with children. (02) 6212 3600 naa.gov.au

TIDBINBILLA NATURE RESERVE
PADDYS RIVER • NATURE RESERVE • ADMISSION: $12 (DAY PASS – PRIVATE VEHICLE) In a beautiful valley between the Tidbinbilla and Gibraltar ranges on the fringe of Namadgi National Park, 40 minutes’ drive south of the city, this 54km2 area has recorded the highest density of Aboriginal artefacts found in the ACT. It was once a significant meeting place for neighbouring clans, where ceremonies, trading and marriages took place. The name Tidbinbilla is derived from the Ngunnawal word “Jedbinbilla” – a place where boys were made men. It is believed the area was highly prized for its supply of the Bogong moth, which was shaken and teased out from under rocky overhangs before being roasted. Visitors can do a guided walk with an Aboriginal ranger or hike the Birrigai Time Trail to the Birrigai Rock Shelter, which is one of the oldest in the region. Or walk along Hanging Rock Trail to see majestic granite tors once used as shelters by Indigenous people. (02) 6205 1233 tidbinbilla.act.gov.au

Jane Cay was born in Cooma and founded local store Birdsnest. Here she shares some of her favourite things about the area
What are some local highlights on the calendar in Cooma? The Cooma Sundowners Cup (racingnswcountry.com.au) in December is the top event on our race-day calendar. The Cooma Show (coomashow.com.au) and Cooma Rural Rodeo (coomarodeo.org.au) provide great family entertainment. The Cooma Rotary Markets (coomarotary.org.au/markets) are held on the third Sunday of each month and the Australian National Busking Championships (coomamusic.com.au) is held each November. When friends come to visit, where is the one place you take them? The Raglan Gallery (02 6452 3377, raglangallerycooma.com) on iconic Lambie Street. Where is your favourite place to eat? Rose’s Lebanese Restaurant (02 6452 4512, rosesrestaurant. com.au). All their produce is grown organically on their farm. What is one thing people often don’t know about Cooma? It’s the birthplace of multicultural Australia, thanks to the Snowy Mountains Scheme, which saw more than 100,000 people from all over the world come to Australia during the 1950s and ’60s.
