GALLERY SHOWS TURNER WINTER BLOCKBUSTER

Experience the taste of locally grown black Perigold truffles at the Canberra & Capital Region Truffle Festival from 21 June through to early August. This hands on festival which is now in its fifth year invites visitors to participate in truffle hunts, tastings, dinners and cooking demonstrations. It takes in the area stretching from Robertson in the Southern Highlands to Thredbo and Guthega in the Snowy Mountains and everything in between. trufflefestival.com.au

The must-see exhibition this winter is the National Gallery of Australia’s Turner from the Tate: The making of a master. It draws from the Tate’s extensive collection of JMW Turner’s work and will comprise 45 oil paintings, complemented by a further 70 works on paper including sketches and watercolours. nga.gov.au

MEMORIAL’S MEMORIAL’ EMORIAL S CLOSING CEREMONY TO REMEMBER EMORIAL’ In a moving tribute commemorating those who lost their lives in conflicts, the Australian War Memorial has recently expanded its Last Post closing ceremony and now streams it live via webcam. You can see it live daily at 4.50pm. On the first and third Wednesdays of each month, the Last Post ceremony includes the presence of Australia’s Federation Guard. At 4pm a catafalque party mounts a vigil at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Solider at the Hall of Memory. There is a change of guard at 4.30pm followed by the entire catafalque party participating in the Last Post ceremony. awm.gov.au

WATCH THE BRITISH & IRISH LIONS CLASH See international rugby in the capital when the British & Irish Lions take on the Brumbies at Canberra Stadium on 18 June. GET YOUR WINTER SKATES ON An outdoor ice skating rink transforms Garema Place in the city centre into a winter wonderland this July. Skating sessions go late into the night. Grab a hot chocolate or bite to eat from nearby cafes and restaurants while watching the frosty fun.

FROLIC BY THE FIRESIDE The annual Fireside Festival (1–31 August) is the perfect excuse to embrace the cold with a glass of cool climate region red wine sipped by a crackling fire. SEE HOW ONE MILLION TREES INSPIRED AN ARTIST One of the many specially commissioned Centenary year projects may be seen at the National Library of Australia from 5 July. UK artist Jyll Bradley’s multi-disciplinary project City of Trees was inspired by the founders of Canberra who planted one million trees in the capital 100 years ago. nla.gov.au

The National Museum of Australia’s Glorious Days: Australia 1913 takes a step back in time to glimpse life 100 years ago. Head to the National Archives of Australia to see Design 29: Creating a Capital, the original Canberra designs created for the 1911 Federal Capital Design Competition.
