Building skills, building futures
A guide to apprenticeships in Wales
For employers
Apprenticeships offer a fantastic opportunity for businesses to bring new talent to their organisation, as well as upskill their current workforce.
Whether you’re looking to recruit or simply improve the skillset of your employees, work-based learning allows employers to ‘grow their own’ when it comes to a knowledgeable and productive workforce.
An apprenticeship means that workers gain new skills specific to their role and your operations, instilling a strong ethos centred around your company and what you do. It also showcases your long-term investment in their talent.
Investing in an apprenticeship directly contributes to the positive future of not just your business, but your industry.
Apprenticeships may feel like a daunting undertaking but by working with a training provider, you will be guided through the process every step of the way and your learners will receive high quality learning that will ultimately boost your business.
Give future talent their first taste of the world of work
As well as apprenticeships, providers ACT and Itec offer Jobs Growth Wales+, a programme for 16 to 19 year olds that bridges the gap between school and an apprenticeship.
Employers are key to the success of JGW+, offering vital placements to learners and giving them their first work experiences.

For learners
Apprenticeships can be the stepping stone or even the launch pad to a well-respected career.
They can also help you hone the skills you’ve already gained in your job. Whatever your sector, wherever you are in your career, there is an apprenticeship for you.
Combining a mix of practical on-the-job training with traditional study, work-based learning offers the chance to gain new skills as well as a recognised qualification, all within working hours for a better work-life balance.
As an apprentice you’ll earn your own wage while gaining the key skills you need to progress in your career.
Not ready for an apprenticeship just yet?
If you are 16 to 19 years old looking to leave the classroom but want support finding and securing a role that’s right for you – Jobs Growth Wales+ (JGW+) can bridge the gap between school and work.
JGW+, currently delivered by ACT and Itec, gives learners the skills, qualifications and experience to progress onto an apprenticeship, set up their own business or land their dream role.
Learners also get paid up to £60 a week on top of a meal allowance of up to £19.50 a week.
