Michelle was a remarkable human being, extraordinary in her own demure way. She was colour, light, stillness, peace, and beauty. She spoke like I’ve never heard anyone speak before, so much calm, reassurance and patience. She had a fire within her that would kindle away, yet it conquered and engulfed the highest of mountains. She won you over with the biggest smile and the best-looking teeth I had ever seen, it’s one of the first things I remember about her.

Albeit quiet and not always outspoken, her whisper could start and end a war. Up until the end, she raged against the dying of the light, in the end she found her voice of roaring thunder. I’m privileged and proud to have called her my dearest friend, a kindred spirit and a sister in arms. Fly free with the butterflies and ride your unicorn into the sunset of what lies beyond. Please don’t ever forget her, speak of her often, smile when doing so and every time you see a butterfly or unicorn, or even a unicorn butterfly, be happy that you have had the absolute pleasure of being touched by such a beautiful soul.

As many of you now know, our dear friend and colleague, Michelle Smart, sadly passed away recently. Lynnemari Gagiano-Davies, who was Michelle’s very close friend and worked with her in the Health & Social Care Team, wrote the following words in her memory.

The Minister for Economy gained first-hand experience of our Jobs Growths Wales+ (JGW+) programme, attending group sessions and speaking with learners and staff, during a special visit, on Tuesday August 23.

Our care group took part in mock working environments, giving them a taste of careers in childcare and adult care. Some learners, from our Engagement strand, were busy working on budgeting and managing money, in preparation for when they become employed. ACT’s World of Work team also conducted mock interview

Determined ACT staff took on a marathon walking challenge to help Samaritans (South Wales Valleys). Each one walked the distance of a marathon during July, for the charity’s “Samarathon” challenge. Modern recycling bins arrive in centres!

Easter Shutdown –You have spoken!

New colour-coded recycling bins can now be found at our Barry and Aberdare centres, as part of a green-waste scheme for all our sites! The modern bins are loudly labelled, to make it very clear what can be put in each one. As part of our Environmental Strategy, similar bins will appear in even more locations soon.

Thank you to everyone who voted in the Easter Shutdown Survey. P&D received 220 votes from ACT staff, with 171 in favour of a two-week shutdown period and 49 against. So, from 2023 we will continue to have a two-week shutdown for Easter (in line with School holidays) with three days annual leave (pro rata) being used for this, along with an additional day's leave (pro rata) being gifted by ACT.

The Systems Development team have been busy collaborating with the Curriculum team to develop a new website for our delivery staff. The new app, Snippets, has been designed to allow our assessors, tutors and teachers to create collections of resources, which can then be shared with learners and colleagues. It is not exotic, but I’ve always had a passion for France. I have travelled to many locations in France, from the north of Normandy to the French Alps. It’s a fantastic country to drive across, with beautiful landscapes and small villages. It has the most relaxed culture I have ever experienced and I’ve always found the people very friendly. Of course, you cannot visit France without a stop at Disneyland Paris!

What is the last album you listened to?

About 15 years ago I took up climbing and I have been hooked ever since. I climb both indoors and outdoors and since having children I have also got them into the sport from the age of six. It is a fantastic way to stay fit and build confidence.

When I first left school, I struggled to find work and the only options available to me were factory work or shop work. I decided on shop work and ended up working in a frozen-food cold store. It was back-breaking, uncomfortable work in minus 25 degrees. I would regularly have ice forming on my eye lashes and my hands and toes would get painfully cold. That was probably the lowest point of my working career.

If there was one thing I have learned from 20 years in this industry, it’s to never take negative things to heart. Young people will often say and do things that they don’t really mean, people will at times let you down, but it’s important not to take any of the negatives home with you and remember that tomorrow is a new day.

Tell us a little bit about your role, and what the average day looks like…

What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?

For me, a key part of what we do is breaking down barriers with learners, to help them to succeed. The young people we work with have various support needs and when these needs are met, they flourish, there is no greater reward than to be part of that.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I am the JGW+ Delivery Manager for Aberdare. Summing up the job role is very difficult as no two days are the same. However, the one key feature of every day is that everything I do revolves around making this a great place for the learners and staff to be. In addition to this, I am also supporting to develop a new suite of Health and Wellbeing qualifications.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself…

I love the outdoors, so if I’m not in work and if the weather permits, I love to get out walking anywhere I can. I have a habit of wandering off the beaten path as I love to explore new places and I prefer peace and quiet, away from crowds. It does sometimes get me a little lost and often up to my ankles in mud, but I always find my way home!

Where is the best place you have travelled to?

What would be your top tip for colleagues?

Meet the TeamDevelopmentSystems

Responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of digital systems to assist with data processing in line with ACT procedures, as well as delivering support and training to staff related to systems and application processes.

The Systems Development team are responsible for the development and maintenance of both in-house and third-party solutions to ensure the effective, smooth running of the business. This includes everything from large systems such as Vision and OneFile to smaller one-off projects to provide essential business data.

The GCSE learners at ACT Schools are jumping for joy, after bagging some absolutely amazing results! The Class of 2022 scored an array of remarkable grades, in everything from Maths and English to Health and Social Care.

Overjoyed learner Kyle Matthew also praised teaching staff, saying: “Since I have been here, I’ve had really good communication with teachers and they are all kind and respectful. Thank you for the time you’ve given to me.” Delighted Charlie Keeping echoed this, adding: “I’d like to thank all staff at ACT for helping me achieve my results in my GCSEs.”

Kelly Rowlands, Head of Education, praised the successful learners. She added: "As a school we are incredibly proud of what our young people have achieved this year. We wish them all the best of luck in their future education and employment and are grateful for having the opportunity to help them on their journeys."

The ACT Schools teaching staff, who pulled out all the stops to help them along the way, passed on their congratulations and shared in their celebratory moments! Antony Leach, Pontygwindy Centre Manager, praised all who worked hard to help secure these amazing results. He said: “I am proud of the team who work tirelessly, including through the pandemic, to support the pupils. A special mention to the support staff (HLTAs) who often provide pastoral support when needed. Without this, the pupils would not be able to engage as well and may not have achieved their GCSEs.”

The hard work - during a very challenging time - paid off, much to the delight of the learners and their families.

Gracie Slyvier, whose GCSE passes included Art, English and Maths, attended Jamie’s Farm during her time with ACT. Now her next stop is a course in Equine Care! Upon seeing her great results, her chuffed mother remarked: “I am so grateful for all the support Gracie has had while at ACT.”

Aaron Al Adli passed all his GCSE exams and is now off to college to study a carpentry and tiling course. His mother said: “Aaron would not have been able to get his GCSEs if it weren’t for the staff at ACT. He was so close to giving up and would have not have finished the year if it wasn’t for ACT”. Macey Boulton also passed all of her GCSEs: Maths Numeracy, Health and Social Care, Art and English.

The GCSE achievements at ACT Schools this year are even more remarkable, when you consider the difficulties of the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on everyone. But any such struggles were a distant memory for the bright learners who cheered and hugged each other on the big day, at our Pontygwindy and Ocean Park House centres.

Eager learner Paige Patterson was particularly grateful for the help the ACT Schools teachers gave her. She said: “Thank you to all the teachers for what they have done. If it wasn’t for these teachers I don’t know where I would be. I’m happy with my GCSE results and I want to thank all the teachers for all the help they have given me.”

The prestigious WorldSkills UK awards challenge talented young people to take part in competitive assessments. The honours are partly funded by the Welsh Government and run by a dedicated network of learning providers and colleges.

In the past, we’ve had ACT Learners from Childcare and Social Care recognised by Worldskills UK! The WorldSkills UK National Finals will be held across six venues in the UK, including Cardiff and Vale College.

Categories also include Health and Social Care, Digital Media Production and Automotive Technology.

Vaughan Gething, the Welsh Government’s Economy Minister, said: “The WorldSkills competitions bring together some of the most creative, skilled, and driven young people in Wales. I wish all the competitors the best of luck, both in this important competition and for their future.”

Since the new process and categories were introduced, we have seen an increase in the number and variation of nominations.

The new process encourages departments to interact with each other and nominate staff members from outside of their route/department.

The People & Development Team recently reviewed the Staff Recognition Award Policy. This was done to encourage participation and streamline the process for all staff, and update the policy, to utilise the Kudos function on Iris HR.

After struggling to thrive within the traditional education system, Callum Fennell joined Bethany Residential Care Home as a Carer at just 16 years of age. Since he began working at the Chepstow-based care home, his confidence and career prospects have soared!

He finally recognises his own capabilities and can see first-hand the positive impact his role has on those around him. Care work offers huge job satisfaction and Callum is providing vital care and support to some of the most vulnerable members of Thesociety.UKisan

Through work-based learning, Callum is earning while gaining essential practical experience on the job and is discovering a whole range of skills.

Callum explained: “I really feel I have developed as a person since starting my qualification. I have learned new skills and I am more than happy to ask for help or advice when I need it.

CallumCaring finds perfect role

ageing population with an estimated 15 million individuals over the age of 60. As such, there is a demand for quality elderly care and with that lots of career opportunities. As well as learning a whole host of practical skills on the job, Callum’s apprenticeship qualification is helping him progress his career within the Care Sector, while receiving invaluable support along the way.

Now aged 18, Callum is a Care Assistant and is undertaking his Health & Social Care Level 2 qualification with ACT. In his role, he ensures all the residents are provided with the one-to-one care and support they need and assists them with any additional tasks they need help with.

“When I was in school I found it very hard with the discipline that was in place,” he said. “I struggled with the teachers as they didn’t understand me and this impacted on my grades. I find the apprenticeship route much better for me.”

Callum Fennel, Health & Social Care Level 2 learner “

After a difficult start at school, Callum is now excited about his career prospects and feels his Health & Social Care Level 2 qualification is just the beginning for him. With his eyes firmly fixed on the future, Callum knows exactly where he is heading!

He added: “My manager has already asked me to begin my Level 3 after I complete my Level 2. This has been a big boost to my confidence! My goal is to eventually become a Medicator. Now I am 18, I can start the required training, which will enable me to administer medication, lead a team, deal with emergencies and liaise with outside professionals. If I had not been given this chance to work when I was 16, I don’t know where I would be today.”

I really feel I have developed as a person since starting my qualification. I have learned new skills and I am more than happy to ask for help or advice when I need it.

I work within a team environment and my peers always look out for me. They encourage me through each challenge I face and are there to support me.”

Tŷ Hafan has provided care and support for more than 1,100 children with life-shortening conditions and their families in Wales, since it first opened its doors in 1999. It now costs £5.2m a year - equivalent to £14,500 a dayfor it to stay open and provide these care and support services.

All ACT staff are entitled to take four paid Volunteer Days each year, letting you spend time helping out a deserving cause. Like many of us, I was aware, but couldn’t decide which of the many worthy charity groups to support. After all, we’re still reeling from a global pandemic and organisations are under more pressure than ever.

When I attended the Tŷ Hafan site in Sully, on the day before the Fun Day in July, there was a lot of preparation to do. On arrival, I was met by friendly staff and other keen volunteers, including ACT Facilities Manager Emma Page.

Each year, Tŷ Hafan holds a Family Fun Day to collect much-needed financial support, at its main hospice site in Sully. It’s always a massive celebration and an important fundraiser, but due to the Coronavirus pandemic, it couldn’t be held for three years. Once I found out it was returning for a special event this year, I jumped at the chance to offer my support!

However, once ACT joined up with Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice and named it as an official charity partner, I was in no doubt about who I wanted to help first.

We were happy to do our bit, carrying tent poles, plastic sheets and weights, so goods could be sold. We covered each stall in green weather-proof plastic, adorned with the Tŷ Hafan logos and branding. Acorns Nurseries, South Wales Police and Principality building society were among those to claim a stall and assist with raffles and more.

In all, an estimated 1,500 people attended, so the annual Tŷ Hafan Family Fun Day is officially back! Playing a part in this important event was highly rewarding, educational and, most of all, fun! Now the only thing left to do is choose my next Volunteer Day!

There was a busy fairground for children and us volunteers assisted by putting up colourful signs. Welsh rugby star - and Tŷ Hafan ambassador - Leigh Halfpenny even made an appearance and was happy to pose with delighted fans for photos. For petrolheads, a procession of supercars were on display, includinga McClaren racing car, a Lamborghini and even an Aston Martin!

Following a tour of our skills centre in Cardiff, Nico knew this was where he wanted to be. He signed up for the Jobs Growth Wales (JGW+) programme and hasn’t looked back since. JGW+ is a training and development programme specifically for 16–18-year-olds looking for the skills, qualifications, and experience to get a job or into further training.

"I found lockdown so hard, I was just stuck in my bedroom, sat on my bed,” he added. “Now I’m curious to learn again and have had so much support from ACT to explore what I want to do next. JGW+ is definitely helping to make me more employable for the future.”

The pandemic was challenging for many people, not least those in education. Nico, 17, from Cardiff struggled with online learning and like many young people started to disengage from school. “I found lockdown very difficult, especially not being able to go out and see friends. I just started to withdraw.”

The change in Nico since joining ACT has been enormous and it isn’t just Margaret who has noticed the shift. “My family and friends can’t believe the change in him as a person. Some friends I know are worried about the future of the young people in their lives, so I recommend ACT to them straight away. They’re fantastic."

Learners find new sense of confidence after joining ACT

With a bright future ahead of him, it isn’t just Nico who is happy about his career prospects. His grandmother, Margaret said: “Nico has always been a smiley person, but after Covid he lost that for a while. We are delighted to see him happy and excited about his future again and are so grateful for all of ACT’s support in helping him on his journey. We’ve got Nico back smiling again.”

Following the pandemic, there was a period of time where Nico wasn’t sure where his future lay. Now, he feels he’s back on track.

Concerned about his future, Nico’s grandmother Margaret, a member of the Royal Voluntary Service for 44 years, reached out to us at ACT.

“From the moment he walked in, he knew he was in the right place” Margaret comments, “he felt totally at home and was excited by the different routes available to him.” Nico adds, “I was really quiet when I first joined ACT but over time I started talking to people more. My confidence has shot through the roof. I love it here.”

How have you and your team adapted to Covid-19?

What’s the biggest challenge your team faces?

Supporting learners, particularly in Health and Social care settings, to balance the working pressures with their qualification achievement and further motivating them to progress within the sector. Equally, working with employers on recruitment and retention of learners in this sector, which continues to have its challenges.

My team and I have applied mitigation successfully, incorporated a personcentred blended learning approach and revised and implanted new learner journeys.

Our best practice includes working together as leaders in safeguarding. Also the “Managing Learners at Risk” policy, plus getting the SER to you on time.

Who are you and what’s your role in your organisation?

To continue to attend Quality and Best Practice meetings, getting involved with the ALN Panel, attending and promoting CPD and using the partner network newsletter to keep the company informed of ACT and partner activities. We’ll utilise BPM and partner meetings to understand the challenges we face and how other partners are addressing the same/similar challenges. A “peer inspection” will be undertaken ASAP.

I am a very proud Listening Samaritan (11 years service) and am currently on a sabbatical from my three- year role as Director of the Bridgend branch (mandatory role rotation). I will be resuming listening duties (four-hours shift per week), plus other roles within the branch in October. I will also take on the role of the Regional Training Officer for Wales in September (after the SER is submitted!).
