Tours will meet at the Swannanoa Valley Museum at 223 West State Street in Black Mountain and run every 30 minutes beginning at 5 p.m. The last tour will leave the Museum at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 for members of the Museum and $35 for non-members. “MIstER ROgERs’ nEIghbORhOOd” is visiting the Swannanoa Valley this year in a display of show video excerpts, rare photographs, and artifacts. Fred rogers was an ordained Presbyterian minister who developed one of public television’s most successful children’s shows that continues to air in reruns 10 years after his death in 2003. The Fred rogers Company has provided the Heritage Center with photos and videos from six television shows, which aired nearly 900 original programs from 1968 to 2001. The Fred rogers display is part of “On the Air: The History of Presbyterians in Broadcasting & Communications” exhibit, which highlights Presbyterian innovations, such as 1910 telephone call-ins to listen to weekly sermons; the first religious u.S. broadcasting station; radio programming including “The Protestant Hour,” and motion picture films.

Want to be an archaeologist, or just Indiana Jones? There will be free opportunities to uncover and assemble replica Biblical era pottery pieces on the second Saturdays of the month october through december, and February through April. The archaeological “digs” will held from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. on the selected Saturdays. Visitor’s efforts to reassemble oil lamps and storage vases will be temporarily displayed at the PHC. There also is an exhibit of authentic 2,000 - 5,000 year old pottery from the Holy Land. “go Into All the World: Missions to the near East” exhibit opens in late october and will feature rare photos and will document various mission efforts over the past 200 years in the eastern Mediterranean countries. “Joyful, Joyful: We Adore thee” exhibit features rare psalters and hymnals for the past 500 years, audio music samples on touch-screen kiosks, use of hymns in movie clips, and much more! Among north Carolina towns, black Mountain stands as an enclave for the arts. Around the world, that reputation came about largely through Black Mountain College, which existed here from 1933 to 1956. Within the region that distinction is now due in part to a local institution, the Black Mountain Center for the Arts, located in the renovated old city hall at 225 W. State Street. The mission of BMCA is “to bring arts to the people and people to the arts.” Through theatre, concerts, exhibits, festivals, workshops, classes and outreach, this community arts center offers to both visitors and residents opportunities to participate in and enjoy the arts. incorporated in 1995, the Center is well into its second decade as a non-profit arts institution serving the eastern part of Buncombe County and the communities of Black Mountain, Swannanoa, Montreat, and ridgecrest. it is not an affiliate of county or town governments, but is a stand-alone organization responsible for raising its own funds and promoting its own programs. The residents of our community pull together each year to support the Black Mountain Center for the Arts through arts events and fundraisers, class tuition, donations, grants, and more. When a group of local residents found that the original city hall, c. 1920s, was to be torn down, they chose to rally around the stately brick building at the west end of downtown, to raise money to save and renovate it, and to turn it into a center for community arts that everyone could use with pride and excitement. once the funds were raised, the orange shag carpet, pine paneling, and truck entrance were MIKAM

removed, the former holding cell jail was turned into a visual art classroom, the upper level town library was refurbished into a gallery, the town council chambers were restored into an acoustic concert/theater room, the firemen’s sleeping quarters became a reception room/dance classroom, and the city garage was recycled into a functional clay studio. Today, classes and workshops open to the public are held every weekday in one of the various areas of the fine arts – music, visual arts, pottery, writing and dance. Arts events including concerts, theater productions, summer camps, gallery openings and exhibits are scheduled on a regular basis. A garden with sculpture by local artists in the back yard is adjacent to the clay studio, which has murals installed by nationally recognized artists on both the east and west walls - public art that enhances Black Mountain’s downtown. A tile wall located in the ground level was part of the original fundraising for the building renovation and includes tiles painted by school children who will some day raise their own families in this Valley. each year the Black Mountain Center for the Arts sponsors annual events that bring people in to hear live music, see visual art, view theatrical performances, take home locally produced art, visit local gardens, and meet others in the community. Art Comes Alive At The red House Studios And Gallery By Susan Shaw

In the beginning...on october 6, 1967, 16 women met at the Monte Vista Hotel to form the Swannanoa Valley Arts League (SVFAL), the area’s oldest group of community artists. Author Patricia Cornwell’s mother, Marilyn Pat daniels, was among the first members, as was Mary McMurray, still an active member of the league. Membership zoomed to 41 by March 1968. The meetings and shows were held at various places - the beautiful new library (March 1968), Asheville State Savings and Loan, Swannanoa Community Center. There were Tuesday morning “Paint Togethers” at the red Coach (State Street and Montreat road). The league sponsored arts education in local schools. in 1991, the league found a home in the green house behind the medical center on old u.S. Highway 70. Many classes and workshop have been held there, along with groups of artists who met to paint together. MIKAM

Coming Full Circle Those 16 women who met 46 years ago to form an art league would be delighted to know that SVFAL moved in February 2012 to the red House next to the Monte Vista Hotel, where it all started. The red House was originally known as the Farmhouse, and is the oldest structure on the Monte Vista property, built in 1926. Some know it as the Annex, housing overflow guests from the Monte Vista. it is on the National register of Historic Places because of its age and association with the hotel. First year in the Red house From fall 2011 to March 2012, the league completed an extensive renovation of their 4,000 sq ft. including a new roof, extensive rewiring, and combining of rooms. Volunteers spent countless hours scraping, caulking, priming, and painting the 16 rooms. The finished product includes a three room gallery space, 2 large workshop spaces, a library, and seven artists’ studios with 16 artists. The grand opening was in April 2012, with a wonderful exhibit titled “Give us Your Best.” during this past year, membership has ballooned from 88 to 183. The prime reasons for this are the wonderful opportunities for artists to display their work. Three lovely, well-lighted galleries have hosted 9 shows over the past 12 months. The works range from 2d paintings in every medium to 3d including ceramic sculpture and wood creations. The two large classrooms have ongoing weekly classes plus workshops by members and outside artists on a regular basis. They have had several hundred visitors to their lovely red House this past year, including attendance at the receptions held for each new show. They will have a new exhibit every other month through April. As part of SVFAL’s outreach, they are a part of BAr (Black Mountain Arts and restaurants). Through BAr, they are placing artists’ paintings throughout Black Mountain in participating BAr restaurants. The Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League invites you to visit their Red House Studios and Gallery, located at 310 State Street next to the Monte Vista Hotel. Hours: Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday Noon - 4 p.m. The fall-winter hours go into effect in November. BLue to BLACK Art Weekend By Staff Reports
More than 40 artists, studios and art venues from the bLUE Ridge Parkway at U.s. highway 70 heading east to bLACK Mountain and beyond will be open to the public for the bLUE to bLACK Art Weekend Art stroll & studio tour.
The weekend kicks-off Friday, November 15, 5 - 9 p.m. at the Monte Vista Hotel with an artist reception and preview of featured works and continues throughout the weekend with the Art Stroll and Studio Tour. BLue To BLACK Studio Tour hours are Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. with extended hours as offered per individual artist. Black Mountain art venue/ gallery Saturday hours are 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. with open House-Artist receptions at each participating downtown art venue/gallery daily throughout the weekend.

The event, sponsored by AnTHM Gallery, Greybeard realty, Seven Sisters Gallery, and The inn on Mill Creek, is a chance to visit working artist studios and downtown Black Mountain art venues, and to take part in demonstrations, workshops, studio tours, children’s crafts, and live entertainment throughout the weekend. the joy of the season comes alive in downtown black Mountain each year during the frst weekend of december with the annual holly Jolly Christmas (Friday, december 6) and the Black Mountain-Swannanoa Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade (Saturday, december 7). Holly Jolly Christmas is an opportunity to get shopping done early in the quaint village-like town of historic Black Mountain. Holly Jolly features sparkling lights and sights, smells of hot chocolate and cider, Christmas cheer and music, and much more. There are street festivities and the shops stay open late. Many stores offer refreshments and have special sales for one night only. Santa and his sleigh kick off the event with a parade down Cherry Street followed by a photo opportunity for children of all ages at Santa’s wonderland. Holly Jolly is a wonderful opportunity to get in the holiday spirit, share in community festivities, and get started on Christmas shopping. The Christmas Parade sponsored by the Black MountainSwannanoa Chamber of Commerce takes place on Saturday, december 7, at 4 p.m. in downtown Black Mountain. The parade begins at Flat Creek road and proceeds through town to Cragmont road. This is an annual family event designed to bring the community together and celebrate the spirit of Christmas. Located at 225 W. State Street in the old city hall between the Swannanoa Valley Museum and Thai Basil restaurant, the BMCA has been lovingly restored and teems with activity even in the chilly months. The building is open to the public from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday. All year long the Black Mountain Center for the Arts has something for everyone including theater performances, concerts, gallery exhibits, classes, and historical interest. We support 10 gallery shows a year, which are free to the public. The Appalachian Pastel Society will have its juried show in the gallery during part of october into November. The Swannanoa Valley Museum The Museum is open to the public from mid-April until the end of October, Tuesday - Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. There is a modest admission charge of $2 per person. Members, students, and children are free. The Museum is located in downtown Black Mountain at 223 West State Street in the town’s historic fre house.

From earliest times, the swannanoa Valley has had a magnetic attraction for humankind. Native peoples found the food and materials necessary for their culture and livelihood. The first european settlers found a bountiful land that provided sustenance and a place to raise their children to a life of adventure and selfreliance. They were followed by those who developed its natural resources, those seeking the health benefits of the fresh mountain air, and those finding spiritual renewal in a place of rare natural beauty. Most recently, as people have become more mobile, increasing numbers have come to enjoy the scenic and recreational opportunities of the Valley. All of these groups have played an important role in shaping our community. it is the goal of the Swannanoa Valley Museum to acknowledge, preserve, and share the contributions of each. in so doing, we seek to build a bridge between the past, the present, and the future, and promote those qualities that make this a great place to work and live. Located in the historic district of downtown Black Mountain, the Swannanoa Valley Museum is recognized as the primary museum of general history in Buncombe County, the most MIKAM

populated county in Western North Carolina. The Museum has become a valuable resource for teachers, students, and researchers who use its collection, which now numbers over 10,000 artifacts and photographs, to learn about the history of the Valley and the growth and development of Western North Carolina. the swannanoa Valley Museum was founded in 1989 by a group of local citizens, many descended from the Valley’s original settlers, with the aim of creating a collection which vividly depicts the history, culture, and character of the Valley, serving both to celebrate the community’s heritage, and help visitors and new residents gain a sense of place. in 1989, the Town of Black Mountain deeded its original fire house, which had been vacant since 1984, to the Swannanoa Valley Museum. The fire house was designed in 1921 by the renowned architect richard Sharp Smith, who served for six years as the chief architect for the Biltmore estate. it is one of just two public buildings designed by Smith outside of Asheville. space from which to develop new programs to serve the cultural and educational needs of the community. Inside gallery exhibits include both artifacts and pictorial displays. Permanent exhibits show how earning a livelihood, transportation, construction, and social customs have evolved since the earliest times of human habitation. each year, one or more special exhibits are mounted which highlight a local activity or give a local twist to a regional or national interest. in the rear gallery, visitors can see many of the household items common to the early mountain home. in addition to the gallery exhibits, the Museum manages a large collection of original photographs and maintains a local library and files to aid local history researchers. The collection numbers over 5,000 objects. Outside, the Museum offers a variety of off-site activities, open to both members and non-members. Walking, hiking, rafting, and auto tours provide unique insights into the geography and cultural development of the Swannanoa Valley. Perhaps the best known of these is the rim Hike series. These 11 hikes traverse some of the highest and most remote parts of the Valley. They combine physical exertion and expert commentary, and were chosen a “must do” activity by “our State” magazine in 2012. The Museum’s programs were also highlighted on uNC-TVs N.C. Weekend program in August.
