Experience DOWNTOWN Asheville Welcome to Downtown Asheville Surrounded by the majestic Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains, Asheville is known for its natural beauty and many outdoor activities, its mild four seasons, a fantastic culinary scene, vibrant entertainment and an eclectic and historic downtown shopping district. Its diverse culture is highlighted by the many artists displaying their work and performing throughout downtown Asheville. The season’s change can be felt by the brisk, cool evening air - a sign that the calendar turned to October. This weekend is the perfect time to revisit the galleries, shops, theaters and restaurants with the final Gallery Walk of the Asheville Downtown Gallery Association planned for Friday, Oct 3 from 5pm until 8pm. The Asheville Downtown Association invites local residents to join regional visitors to the downtown experience during Downtown Fall Nights. Selected merchants are joining the galleries this Friday night and next staying open until 8pm, adding to the enjoyment of your downtown experience. And, to encourage you to drop in, the coupon on the adjacent page will give you an opportunity to return to downtown Asheville to redeem gift certificates from many merchants. Use this guide to find your way to the Gallery Walk, and to find merchants open until 8pm. Galleries, shops, restaurants, theaters and parking options are located on the map for your ease. Look for the leaf waving Downtown Docents who will be available to help you navigate your way to the galleries, shops and restaurants closest to your parking location. They will also be happy to collect your registration coupons to enter you in the drawing for the downtown shopping spree compliments of downtown merchants.

Asheville Independent Restaurant Association The Asheville Independent Restaurant Association (AIR) formed in fall of 2002 as a volunteer organization dedicated to fostering a stronger business environment for Asheville’s locally owned and operated independent restaurants. On April 14, 2004 AIR was recognized as a 501(a) non-profit organization. In 2008 the AIR Foundation was formed to fund culinary scholarships.

Mission To cooperatively promote the common interests of and contribute to the well being of those locally owned independent restaurants and individuals engaged in the food service/hospitality industry in Asheville, North Carolina.

AIR Foundation The AIR Foundation is the community support arm of the Asheville Independent Restaurant Association. In 2007, AIR finalized its AIR Chefs of Tomorrow Scholarship for culinary students at A-B Tech in Asheville. This effort was expanded in 2008 through a variety of efforts and AIR formed a separate Foundation to dispense funds across a broader base. They raise money for the AIR Foundation via annual fundraisers and through donations from generous individuals, AIR members, sponsors and associates who make direct AIR financial contributions.

195803-600

“Chef’s of Tomorrow” Scholarship Fund Currently, AIR offers scholarships for culinary students at A-B Tech through their “Chef’s of Tomorrow” scholarship program at A-B Tech. Annually, AIR donates two $1,000.00 scholarships to culinary students from Buncombe County. AIR sponsor, FRS Equipment, partners to provide a start up kit of knives and uniforms for the recipients of AIR scholarships. Other AIR sponsors and supporters have made direct financial contribution to the scholarship fund within the Foundation. Many AIR sponsors and associate members have also supported this scholarship fund through in-kind donations. Non-financial donations such as gift cards for school supplies, chef’s coats, culinary ‘gear’ that AIR student recipients need are also welcome. Contact AIR at P.O. The 62nd Asheville Holiday Parade The Art & Heart of Giving Saturday, November 22 at 11 am Sponsored by The Asheville Downtown Association in partnership with the Asheville Merchants Corporation and the City of Asheville. The Asheville Holiday Parade has entertained children . . . and kids at heart for 62 years! This year the Parade baton has been passed to the Asheville Downtown Association from the Asheville Merchants Corporation who produced the Parade since 1946. Along with the new sponsor are a few new twists: The 2008 Holiday Parade theme is dedicated to the many artists, performers, volunteers and businesses who put their hearts into giving every day in Asheville. Pritchard Park will be the center for many holiday festivities including a visit from Santa every Saturday morning from 9:30-10:30 where he will pick up his mail at the “North Pole Express” post office box.

A Parade with Heart - This year’s Parade will start at 11 am leaving time to enjoy other holiday events scheduled downtown on Parade Day. The Parade will end at Pritchard Park where Santa will be on hand to sing a few holiday songs and meet the kids, followed by a concert by the Biltmore Baptist Choir and Youth Music Ministries. The theme of the Parade — The Art & Heart of Giving — sets the tone for the day. Many Parade float sponsors will be representing charitable groups… Parade attendees are encouraged to bring donations to the Parade… Downtown merchants and restaurants identified by a Candy Cane Heart poster in their window will give a surprise gift to patrons on Parade Day… and the circle of giving will be complete. The list of charities and items that will be collected will be on the Parade website — Asheville Parade.org — and in upcoming holiday inserts in the Asheville CITIZEN-TIMES.

195806-600

replaced this year with locally designed and crafted giant puppets — a moving forest of Christmas trees… a dancing snowman… a Nutcracker… and of course… Rudolph, the favorite reindeer of all. Rudolph doesn’t have to go solo this year if eight sponsors step up to adopt a reindeer! Interested businesses or individuals that would like to help the Parade bring Rudolph’s friends to life, can ADOPT A REINDEER for $500. There’s Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen. Adoptive “parents” will be given a “birth” certificate along with recognition in the Parade program, holiday inserts and on the Parade website at ashevilleparade.org.

To be in the Parade - The Parade is a great way to connect with the heart of our community. The deadline to submit an application to be in the Parade has been extended to October 7. An application can be downloaded at ashevilleparade.org or by calling 628-2403. All applications will be reviewed by the Parade committee and evaluated for creativity and representation of theme. People walking or riding in the Parade must be festive and entries must be holiday themed — representing Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Kwanza, Christmas or New Years. A list of local charities is available at ashevilleparade.org for those who wish to represent a non-profit or charitable cause.

For more information, visit ashevilleparade.org or call the Parade helpline at 828 628-2403. Sandie Rhodes, Parade Director 828 628-1422 (direct) 828 280-8270 cellinfo@ashevilleparade.org
