How to choose vinyl replacement windows All windows consist of a frame, glass insulating system, seal system, and components like cam locks, rollers, etc. For a window to be efficient, it is crucial to pay particular attention to the quality of the glass. Various factors can affect the performance and energy efficiency of a window unit. This article will focus on educating you about some of the basic elements that make a good replacement window.
Q:
How do you choose a good replacement window?
Well, once you know what makes up a good energy efficient window you will be better equipped to make an informed purchasing decision. Here are some simple steps in choosing a good window and replacement window company.
A: •
Know the characteristics of a good energy efficient window.
•
Choose a reputable company that installs high quality energy efficient vinyl windows.
•
Check out the references of that company to see if others are happy with the products they are selling.
As mentioned earlier, you should know what an energy efficient window is comprised of, since this will guide your purchasing decision. Energy Star qualified windows have the following in common:
High Quality Frame Vinyl frames add insulating value to the frame surrounding the glass further increasing the windows performance. A good quality replacement window will feature fusion welded corners. Welders range in cost from a couple hundred dollars to a million dollars or more. The million dollar welder does things the cheaper welders cannot do. Hydraulics simultaneously line up all four corners precisely and the automated welder welds through the entire frame, effectively welding the internal chambers as well. This type of structural welder increases the longevity and strength of the window. Regular welders often only weld the outer edges that you see, not the internal structure.
Low-E Glass Low-emittance (Low-E) coatings are microscopically thin, virtually invisible, metal or metallic oxide layers deposited on a glazing surface primarily to reduce the U-factor by suppressing radiative heat flow. The principal mechanism of heat transfer in multilayer glazing is thermal radiation from a warm pane of glass to a cooler pane. Coating a glass surface with a low-emittance material and placing that coating between the glass layers blocks a major amount of this radiant heat transfer, thus lowering the total heat flow through the window. Low E366 glass is very helpful to keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
Gas Fills Between the spaces of some double paned windows, a special type of gas is inserted, filling the window unit and thereby improving its overall thermal performance. An inert gas is used because it reacts more favorably. It has a higher resistance to heat flow than air does and this decreases the window’s U-Factor. The U-Factor is the measurement of how well and window prevents heat from escaping. The rating can be anywhere from 0.2 to 1.2. Argon and Krypton are typical types of gases used for this purpose. A lower number means a more efficient window. The NFRC is a non-profit that develops and publishes standards for fenestration performance. Windows, doors and skylights are then labeled with a sticker.
Edge Spacers Energy efficient windows often employ super spacers having “warm edge technology”. (Spacers refer to the material used to keep the two panes of glass apart while also providing an air tight seal.) “Super Spacers” keep the windows warmer around the edges where condensation often occurs. By eliminating aluminum which transmits heat rapidly (1416 BTUs per hour) and replacing it with a foam insulator, dramatic improvements are made, both in energy performance and in reducing condensation along the glass perimeter. Planning to buy, build, or remodel?
Begin with the Home Show: Three days of information, products and seminars. by Clay Johnson
Asheville’s rite of spring, the Annual Home Show, held Friday –Sunday, March 19, 20 and 21, is back at the Civic Center and is expanded to include more seminars! The 35th annual Western Carolina Home Show is now being co-sponsored by Western Carolina Productions, Inc. and Peak Productions, Inc. This premier home related event in Western North Carolina since 1976, fills all three levels of the Asheville Civic Center. John Patterson, President of Western Carolina Productions, Inc., is especially happy to welcome Peak Productions, Inc. as a co-sponsor of the show this year. “They provide new ideas and a new approach. It’s working out quite well for everyone.” For those who have a vision of a dream home, the WNC Home Show includes “everything you can think of for the home, both inside and out,” notes Patterson, who then adds that “things you wouldn’t even think of are there as well!” Held historically on the first weekend in spring, the WNC Home Show is an idea factory. With spring “finally cracking and budding open after this past winter, there are great landscaping ideas as well,” adds Patterson. The Home Show features all of the latest technology and techniques in the construction and building industry including new energy related items. “We build green building,” notes exhibitor Bill Fagan, owner of Timeless Mountain Homes, builder of True North Log Homes and other high end custom homes, “and I feel The Home Show is an excellent place to showcase our products!” This year’s show features a special green building section, populated with companies involved in all aspects of green building. “We’re working closely with the Green Building Council this year,” notes Clay Johnson, President of Peak Productions, and quite a few members of the Green Building Council are exhibitors in this year’s show. Maggie Leslie, Program Director for the Green Building Council, was thrilled when she was approached by the Home Show. “We have long wanted to promote green building, and the Home Show reaches so many people,” adds Leslie.
The Green Building Council is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the community on green building, working with homeowners, architects and builders. In addition to a booth, the Green Building Council will offer 14-15 classes and seminars where the community can learn many aspects of green building from retrofitting your home to taking advantage of the current financial incentives. “We are a resource for the community,” adds Leslie. “We can provide information on NC HealthyBuilt homes and information on certifying your house as built to a green standard.” Last year’s show boasted over 200 exhibitors, including remodelers, builders, architects, kitchen and bath experts, flooring and other material companies, landscape and exterior companies, bankers and insurance agents, green building experts, and much more. “The show includes just about anyone you can imagine involved in a house,” notes Patterson who feels that the exhibitors and offerings will be equal to if not larger than last year. In fact two seminar rooms were opened this year to expand the seminar offerings! Quite a few exhibitors will also be talking about tax rebates and energy. From windows and insulation to tax experts, there will be a professional on hand to answer your tough questions.

The show also offers a special night for builders. Thursday March 18 from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. is builder’s night for contractors and developers only. Come peruse and get ideas! Patterson notes that for anyone planning to buy, build, or remodel, this year’s show from March 19, 20 and 21 at the Civic Center offers a fountain of contacts and information!

Green and Growing
by Maggie Leslie, Program Director for the WNC Green Building Council
Green buildings are not just good for the environment, Green building represented just 2 percent of the construction market they are simply better buildings. The growth in the green building industry can be attributed to the fact that by building green, everyone wins- the environment, the economy, the consumer and the builder. Consumers get a more comfortable, healthier home with lower utility bills and less maintenance requirements while builders can often sell the homes more quickly and for more money. According to a recent survey by Professional Builder Magazine, 74 percent of the respondents said their customers are willing to pay a premium for a certified-green home.
in 2005, but is expected to comprise as much as 20 percent of the residential construction starts and 25 percent of commercial starts by 2013, according to McGraw-Hill Construction’s Green Outlook 2009 market intelligence report. In Western North Carolina, we are seeing similar trends. In 2008, 12.5 percent of housing starts in Buncombe Ccounty were registered NC HealthyBuilt. According to Ecohouse Realty, 45 percent of all homes sold in the city limits in 2008 were built green.
As of today, almost 400 homes have been certified by the NC In the absence of a universally approved definition of green, certification HealthyBuilt Homes Program. With 175 registered builders in the NC HealthyBuilt Homes program, and 85 percent of the green certified programs have emerged to prevent green-washing, and to provide homes in the state, WNC is leading the way to a green future. Buyers can a marketing edge for builders who are willing to make human health find green homes in affordable to high end price ranges. The US Green and environmental sustainability top priorities. In Asheville, there are three main certification programs for green building: Energy Star Homes Building Council’s LEED-Homes Program is also becoming more popular in WNC. Two LEED-Homes have been certified to date, (National), N.C. HealthyBuilt Homes (Statewide) and Leadership one in Polk County and one in Madison. Two other projects in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Homes (National). one in the city of Asheville and one in Haywood County are pending Energy Star homes focus just on energy efficiency while both NC HealthyBuilt and LEED for Homes also address healthy indoor air quality, certification while 12 other projects are currently under construction. (continued on p.12) water efficiency, site impacts and resource conservation. Each program is third party inspected for quality assurance and designed to be a road map to help consumers and builders make educated decisions while weighing the cost benefit of different green upgrades. Green homes cost on average of 0-6 percent more depending on how green you go. Most often the increased cost in mortgage payments is offset by the savings on utilities starting the first month. Then add the reduced maintenance, healthy indoor air and comfort on top of that.

The best windows use less conductive materials such as foam and rubber. Some companies employ a double sealing technique whereby the foam seal is used to provide the highest insulating value and then a secondary rubber or polymer sealant is applied over that to prevent gas escaping and seals from breaking. Warm edge spacers can improve the U-value of a window by 10 percent and boost the edge temperature, thereby reducing condensation.
Multiple Window Panes Why are multiple window panes better than single paned windows? Multiple window panes increase energy efficiency of a window due to the fact that heat flow is resisted.

A Proud Heritage Hickory, North Carolina, can trace its furniture history back to the earliest part of the 20th century and a young merchant named George W. Hall. Standing in front of his general mercantile business on Hickory’s main street, Hall would watch the long freight trains rumbling through town, bearing load after load of southern lumber headed for furniture factories up north. North Carolina had only a few furniture factories at that time. In 1890 the state had only six furniture plants employing fewer than 200 employees. In 1901, Hall and a group of other Hickory businessmen and bankers decided that some of the region’s lumber should be used to build furniture in Hickory. When these entrepreneurs organized the town’s first furniture factory, Hickory Furniture Company, Hall was only 28 years old. Despite his youth, Hall successfully managed that first plant and within the year he helped to start the town’s second furniture manufacturing business, Martin Furniture Co. The natural trade routes along the rivers in the region provided an artery by which both designers and craftsmen flowed into the Catawba Valley region in the early years of the 20th century. With the craftsmen came the knowledge and skills to train the abundant and willing labor force available in North Carolina’s foothills. There was no unionization in the industry, and workers were plentiful and eager to work. By the 1920s and 1930s, more furniture plants were forming as the industry spread throughout Hickory and the surrounding areas. But the Depression years were especially hard on the industry because furniture was still considered a luxury and many people could barely afford food, much less furniture. Although some companies went under, others managed to stay afloat, due to smart mergers, frugal policies and loyal employees. With the end of World War II, the furniture industry experienced its biggest boom as returning military veterans looked for jobs that would enable them to build homes and buy new furniture for their families. Hickory area companies grew and split off, creating even more new furniture companies. As generation followed generation in the business of crafting furniture, Hickory and the Catawba Valley became the furniture manufacturing capital of the nation.
A Second Industry Is Born In 1960, a second industry arose to support the burgeoning furniture industry when a handful of furniture manufacturers gathered for the first time to display their products to retail dealers. This wholesale exhibition was held on the site of what is now known as Hickory Furniture Mart. And so it was that the Mart became the hub of the wholesale furniture exhibition business and would flourish for decades in western North Carolina. In 1985, Hickory Furniture Mart decided to open its doors — previously open only to wholesale members of the trade — to the public for the very first time. Within a short decade, the Mart was the nation’s leading manufacturer-related furniture center and one of North Carolina’s top visitor attractions. Today, Hickory Furniture Mart’s expansive complex is comprised of four-levels housing nearly a hundred factory outlets, stores, and galleries, representing over a 1000 premier manufacturers. In addition to the acres of professionally decorated furniture showrooms, the Mart complex offers an on-site pet friendly hotel as well as a gourmet café, coffeehouse gallery with Wi-Fi internet access and a wine gallery, all locally owned. The manufacturers represented throughout the Mart include every major quality domestic manufacturer as well as accessories, fabrics, imports, lighting, rugs, wall coverings and other home furnishings. People from every state and from many foreign countries visit Hickory Furniture Mart each year. Furnishings purchased at the Mart may be found in celebrity homes, apartments, condominiums, mansions and castles all around the world. The Mart has been highlighted in the New York Times, Newsday, Los Angeles Times, Woman’s Day and many other national publications. The Mart has also been showcased on TV’s “Oprah Winfrey Show” and the Discovery Channel’s “Interior Motives with Christopher Lowell. Hickory Furniture Mart is truly the ultimate furniture destination.
