Our Name WHAT DOES THE WORD ACUMEN MEAN? ACUMEN ; (ˈækjʊˌmɛn, əˈkjuːmən) The word is a Latin word from the 1530s which means "a point, sting," hence "sharpness, shrewdness," from acuere "to sharpen" . ACUMEN is the ability to judge well; keen discernment; insight ACUMEN means quickness, accuracy, and keenness of judgment or insight. BUSINESS ACUMEN is keenness and quickness in understanding and dealing with a business situation in a manner that is likely to lead to a good outcome. [1] The term "business acumen" can be broken down literally as a composite of its two component words: Business literacy is defined in SHRM's Business Literacy Glossary as "the knowledge and understanding of the financial, accounting, marketing and operational functions of an organization” [2] The Oxford English Dictionary defines acumen as "the ability to make good judgments and quick decisions". [3] Given these textbook definitions, a strictly literal definition would be "keenness and quickness in understanding and dealing with a business situation” http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Business_acumen

3. Cruciferous vegetables: The family of Cruciferous vegetables includes cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, turnip, Brussels sprouts, radish and watercress. Cruciferous vegetables assist the body in its fight against toxins and cancer. You should try to consume at least 115g/40z(of any one or a combination) of these vegetables on a daily basis. If possible, eat them row or very lightly cooked so that the important enzymes remain intact.

4. Whole meal pasta and rice:

Top 10 Anti-Aging Foods

Complex carbohydrates provide a consistent supply of energy throughout the day and should make up the bulk of your diet.

The general guidelines for the anti-aging diet are: keep your calorie consumption and saturated fat intake down; eat plenty of wholegrain, oily fish and fresh fruit and vegetables; and cut down on salt and sugar. In addition to these general guidelines, there are specific foods that have a roll in antiaging and that you should regularly include in your diet.

Whole meal pasta is an excellent complex carbohydrate. It is high in fiber and contains twice the amount of iron as normal pasta. Brown rice is another recommended complex carbohydrate, which is high in fiber and B vitamins.

1. Avocado: This fruit, which is usually eaten as a vegetable, is a good source of healthy monounsaturated fat that may help to reduce level of a bad type of cholesterol in body. Avocado is a good source of vitamin E and can help to maintain healthy skin and prevent skin aging (vitamin E may also help alleviate menopausal hot flushes). It is rich in potassium which helps prevent fluid retention and high blood pressure.

2. Ginger: This spicy root can boost the digestive and circulatory systems, which can be useful for older people. Ginger may also help to alleviate rheumatic aches and pains.

5. Soya: Menopausal women might find that soya helps to maintain estrogen levels. Soya may alleviate menopausal hot flush and protect against Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis and heart disease. Look out for fermented soya products, which are more easily digested, therefore more nutritional, and do not generally cause food intolerances. You may want to check that soya products have not been genetically modified. Soya should not be confused with soya sauce, which is full of salt and should be used sparingly, if at all.

TOP 10 ANTI-AGING FOODS black grapes contain phytochemicals known as flavonoidspowerful antioxidants which help to protect the body against damage caused by free radicals and aging.

6. Garlic: Eating a clove of garlic a day (row or cooked) helps to protect the body against cancer and heart disease.

9. Water: Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day in order to remain healthy.

The cardio protective effects of garlic are well recorded.

Water helps us to get rid of the toxins and unwanted waste materials from your body.

One 1994 study in Iowa, USA, of 41,837 women between the age of 55 and 69 suggested that women who ate a clove of garlic at least once a week were 50 percent less likely to develop colon cancer.

Don't rely on thirst; this sensation diminishes with age. Drink often and choose from nutritious liquids, including 100% fruit and vegetable juices, skim or low fat milk, broths, sparkling water, and teas.

Another study at Tasgore Medical college in India suggested that garlic reduced cholesterol levels and assisted blood thinning more effectively than aspirin, thus helping to reduce the risk of heart disease.

7 TIPS TO FINANCIAL FREEDOM Most of us want Financial Freedom to be free from debt and to have the financial ability to be free to do whatever or go wherever we want. Here are 7 quick Tips to Financial Freedom.

1. Set a SMART Goal. Your first goal doesn't have to be big. Your goal should be Small, Meaningful, Accomplishable, Reasonable & Timed that will put you in a better financial position than you are right now. Making your goal too big or too difficult may make you feel defeated if you don't or cannot reach it. For example, start by trying to save $500 in 6 months. Once you reach your goal, work towards the next one.

2. Control Spending. Overspending is the assassin of savings and keeps us in financial bondage. Controlling our spending through a spending plan or budget will help us make better purchasing decisions. Also do small things to avoid miscellaneous spending that takes a big chunk of our budget. For example, avoid getting that $5 cup of coffee every morning; bring your lunch to work instead of eating out every day; look for season sales where you can get 50-75% discounts for clothes or technology; and cook dinner instead of eating out every night. You will see that you will save a heap of change over time.

3. Save with Passion. Passion is the key to success for everything, including savings. Passion about savings will be the catalyst for real substantial and sustainable progress. Saving towards your passion of getting your first home or getting a new car will make it less likely for you to want to tap into your savings. Saving without a Purpose & Passion will leave your savings account and saving plan vulnerable to spending temptation. By building and laying your financial foundation now & delaying short term instant purchase gratification, this will allow you to enjoy long term financial freedom.

4. Avoid Expensive Mistakes. It's that one big financial mistake that can sabotage a financial future. We all have or will make at least one big financial blunder that turns into an expensive lesson. Try to avoid expensive financial mistakes by staying focused on your Goals, Purpose & Passion for savings.

5. Invest Intentionally. Start investing by opening a 401k with your employer if they offer it. If they don't offer a 401k, open an IRA (Investment Retirement Account). Start by making small contributions each pay period. Most companies will match your contribution. The younger you start, the bigger your nest egg for your retirement. For bigger investments, consult with an investment advisor or wealth manager. Think Compound Interest!!!

6. Timing is Everything. Bad timing in finances can be devastating. Moving ahead too quickly making a purchase of a big ticket item before you can really afford it can be detrimental. Timing is crucial with purchasing and investing. For example, when purchasing a vehicle, go shopping in October close to the end of the month. This is when most dealerships are trying to get rid of their current year inventory to make room for next year's inventory coming in November. Think Sales!

7. Multiple Streams of Income. Identify at least 3 or more ways that you can create revenue. Work on each one by establishing a plan of action, seek assistance, and execute. Then work on the next one. Streams of income could include Employment income, investments, home-based business, etc. This is powerful because if one of your streams of income is stopped or reduced, you will have the others to fall back on.

Helpful Hint: Be creative!!! Remember all great new businesses or ventures start with one small creative idea. Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple Computer started his business by selling his car for supplies and building his first computers in his parent's garage.

Amos Johnson Jr, PhD has a passion for helping

Don’t get mad if people don’t see the value in buying your products or services

Christians develop God-

inspired businesses because he strongly believes that financial prosperity comes through faith In God & Business.

The longer I am in business, the more I realize how simple business is. We make business more complex than it needs to be.

His ministry is a Christian Entrepreneurship Ministry to help you develop your God-inspired business from a Biblical viewpoint.

1.

You create a product or service that people want to buy,

To fulfill the mission of this Christian Entrepreneurship Ministry

2.

tell them you have what they want,

3.

and then sell them what they want.

 He created his website www.amosjohnsonjr.com as a free resource (articles, videos, and podcasts) for you to learn how to start and grow your business from a Biblical viewpoint.

And really that’s it. If your business is not working, then either you are selling something people don’t want or you have not found the people who want what you are selling. Here is the deathblow of success ... You lock yourself in a closet and dream up this great product or service that "YOU" want.

 He offers free phone-advisement sessions to personally assist you with your specific business God has called you to do.  He conducts free and low cost workshops to teach biblical business principles. So visit his website and get the information you need to develop the business God has called you to do.

And really that is actually selfish. You need to create something that "Your Customers" want. Business is about serving other people's needs and wants, not yours.

And if you need to talk, just schedule an appointment with him.

So don’t get mad ... If people don’t see the value in buying your products or services. It is your responsibility to find out what they want, and convince them you have what they want. It’s not their responsibility to buy, just because you are selling.

Legal Life Lessons Business Strategy VS Business Tactics Know the difference So…I have a M.B.A. from Kennesaw State University (go owls!) and one of the most commonly misunderstood terms, I think, by entrepreneurs is “strategy” and “tactics”. So let me break it down for you and assign you some homework this NEW YEAR!

The Lesson “Strategy” is the long term planning and execution for a business goal. “Tactics” are short term objectives for a business goal. For example, my Firm’s “strategy” for becoming the premier business law firm in Georgia is to become known among those heavily involved in the business community as a leader in business legal services. However, our everyday tactics are to meet and connect with business partners for coffee once a week, host networking events once a quarter, and provide helpful information to our clients, partners and leaders on a weekly basis. Think of it as saying ―I want McDonald’s for breakfast.‖ Your overall goal may be to get McDonald’s breakfast without paying for it. Your strategy to do this would be to have your spouse go with you and pay. However, your tactics would be to tell your spouse how much it would mean for them to go with you, prepare their clothes the night before and set the alarm and mysteriously forget to bring your purse. (It’s amazing how creative my mind works) The reasons that it is SO important for businesses to know the difference between these terms is in the decision making process. Each day, as entrepreneurs, we make HUNDREDS of choices that affect our businesses–a lot of these choices decide tactics we will use to affect our overall goal. However, if we are making choices that don’t fall in line with our overall long-term strategy, our goals can become harder to achieve.

Legal Life Lessons The Legal Life Lesson For example, I had a client whose overall goal was to pay off the debt of a building. The strategy to do this was to cut costs, mostly costs from legal claims from employees or those on the property (By the way—do you have premises liability insurance?). When the client obtained a new employee, instead of having me review the employee contract, the client drafted their own. Additionally, when the new policy came in from the insurance company, instead of having me review it, they entered into this agreement with the insurance company with terms that were less than ideal and didn’t offer enough coverage. Short term tactics (daily decision making) like were OUT OF LINE with their strategy for cutting costs from legal claims. As you can imagine, that story didn’t end well six (6) months from that time. What can I say? I’m just a business attorney with an M.B.A.

“Call to Action” Today, I invite each of you to do:

1. Make a list of goals.

2. Make a list of strategies (ways to obtain) those goals .

3. Make a list of things to do short term (daily, weekly, monthly) that align with your strategy to achieve those goals You’re WELL on your way towards success! Good luck & Have a Happy New Year!

Coca Cola knows full well the power of the Feel Good Factor. When your brand makes people feel good, they spend their money with you! The better they feel, the more they spend, and keep coming back because they love that funky feeling! Not necessarily because your product is the best or most affordable but because you make them feel good. Or better. Or best! And that is basically what everyone really looks for and buys, a good, better or best feeling! So, how can you up the Feel Good Factor in your business for 2013? 10 Ways to Get and Keep Clients by Making Them Feel Good!

1. Exceed your clients' expectations. Don't just do what you say; do more. Delight them!

10

Ways to Get and Keep Clients;

Aesthetics! Aim to please your clients by the way things look in your business e.g. the visual presentation of all your communications, your appearance and that of everyone representing you, your packaging, your office space and venues. Some patterns and colors are pleasant to look at while others are aggravating. Aim to always look and sound professional as this will go a long way to engender trust.

Note: Free email addresses such as @hotmail.com. @gmail.com or @yahoo.com or free blogs such as blogspot.com look very amateur and unprofessional. You run the risk of putting people off with this kind of branding, undermining all your hard work and marketing efforts. I know people who will never hire such businesses and I avoid them myself.

with aesthetics, what pleasant sounds, smells, tastes and feelings can you add to the mix? Pay more attention to the background music in your media and at your events; be meticulous about hygiene at your work spaces and venues plus personal hygiene so that you either have no smell or you smell great! Go easy on the perfume and room fresheners though! Flowers could look and smell great but remember that some people are allergic to them. The same goes for perfumes and air fresheners. If you serve food and drink at events, aim to please! Could your marketing materials have a pleasant textured feel or smell? Have you noticed how adverts often feature music from the past? The advertisers know that, for many of us, yesteryears music holds a special nostalgia, taking us back to good times and pleasant memories. And when we feel good, we spend more!

2. Provide peace of mind (e.g. with guarantees, testimonials, recommendations, tasters and demonstrations, FAQs, clear instructions and guidelines, easily-accessible support, continuity services so that the clients' on-going needs are served without the inconvenience of having to keep looking for them;. Connect clients to your trusted and preferred partners who provide other services they need, but which you do not offer (saves them from searching, introducing them to someone you trust)

4. Please the other senses too! Apart from pleasing the eyes

5.Show client appreciation.

Rather, get a paid-for email address, blog and website which can actually cost very little and is really a wise investment.

Send thank you notes when they buy from you or pass on a referral. Hold client appreciation events. Look like you appreciate them when you meet in person! Show enthusiasm as you serve them.

Ways to Get & Keep Clients

By Making Them Feel Good!

6. Provide excellent support. Anticipate client needs and meet them before they ask. Be easily accessible. Survey your clients and target market often so that you know what they want and are able to provide it. Give them what they want, not what you think they want, which is often different.

7.Provide Feel-Good experiences! These could be competitions, open days, fun activities, presentations, surprises in the mail, themed events, venues or activities or even a Welcome on Board/ Thank you phone call from a member of your team. These experiences could be targeted at your customer or at someone/ something dear to them. For example, if your clients are parents, your feel-good event could be family oriented. Or if your clients are animal owners, you could do something to make their animals happy!

8.Do what YOU love! Make sure you are in a business or offering a product or service that you genuinely love! Your enthusiasm will show, rub off and brighten up your client experiences! And when you feel good about what you do, your clients and prospects are more likely to as well.

9.Provide exclusivity. Have an exclusive club, membership forum or benefit for your VIP customers. Some people will up-grade to premium products and services just because they feel good about the exclusivity! .10. Celebrate with them! Send clients and prospects birthday, anniversary and congratulatory cards. Give them a call or send an email when they cross a milestone. Attend their weddings, children’s graduations or their Christmas dinners. Show that their happiness is important to you! In the same manner, share their trying times too. Send get-well-soon cards in times of illness or success cards before an exam. This could also be as simple as a quick tweet, Facebook "like" or a LinkedIn message. www.acumenbusinessmag.com

11. Bonus point: SMILE! Smile when dealing with people in person, on the phone and internet (e.g. in webinars and videos) and even smile as you write your articles, emails and other communications! Smile at networking events, on stage as you present and smile at both the people you know and at strangers! A smile can put people at ease and is often contagious. People can feel you smiling when they read your "smiley communications" and listen to you virtually. I know from personal experience that a smile and a sunny disposition can open doors and "close" sales! My clients often comment about the warmth in my communications and how it influenced them to buy from me. Now, go through your operations and think of ways to make your prospects, clients, past clients and referral partners feel good! Include these in your operations manual and company policy. Educate your team and representatives about your Feel Good Policy and train them to deliver it. Then write in to share your ideas, what has worked for you and any great client experiences you have had with other businesses. All the best! Now, smile! MEET Voncile Belcher

Voncile BELCHER was born in Ozark, Alabama. Coming from a strong religious family, she enjoyed singing and her father

a noted minister and her mother a well-respected missionary, with deep gospel root encouraged her will to sing . Her love for singing gospel music has awarded her many opportunities to minister thru music, which will remain with her always. Her opportunities have enabled her to perform with small, medium, and large ensembles, which have included professional choirs. Many of these performances have provided the honor of being the lead soloist. In 1968, she and her family relocated to Rochester, New York. There she became affiliated with the City of Rochester Mass Choir, which was an occasion to perform on the professional level. In 1974, she and her family returned to their roots in Ozark, Alabama. Upon her return she was then associated with the Gospel Music Workshop of America – Alabama Chapter. This association would prove to be the catalyst to her first recording venture. The recording venture was with Harris Temple Church of God in Christ, under the direction of Keith Ellison, to whom much credit is given. Recording “Do You Know Who Jesus Is” became a blessing and inspiration to many. In 1985, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia. There she transferred her GMWA membership to the Atlanta Chapter. She was welcomed with open arms as well as the Georgia Mass Choir. Her versatility won her acclaim as she portrayed the “Old Lady” on the track “Look Where He Brought Me From”. This track was on the GMC album entitled “We’ve Got the Victory”. “Look Where He Brought Me From”, became a hit on the gospel charts. This success enabled her to expand her ministry to include booking performances outside of her local area, across many state lines, and entertaining audiences at each venue along the way. With this accomplishment, she embarked on a solo career. This leap of faith lead to the release of her first album entitled “Be Strong”. This compilation blessed the hearts of many. After the success of this album, she engulfed herself into her second recording project. “What a Time” presented her the chance to expand even further into the area of writing, arranging, and co-producing. Once more God has smiled on her and granted the opportunity to record her third project. This project titled Kourageous was released summer 2010. It blessed the hearts of many people. Her latest album titled “ The Power “ was released at the end of 2012 and is now on sale . This is only the beginning for such a phenomenal talent. She also lends her vocal skills to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and performed at the Battle of the Bands. It is her desire to continue to minister the Word through song so that all may be HEALED, DELIVERED, and SET FREE. CONTACT INFORMATION: Mail: P.O.
