WINTER 2021

Dear Friends It is a great pleasure to write this letter to you for our annual report. I am thoroughly enjoying my tenure at the helm of this great institution and am pleased to report that the American Civil War Museum had a good 2021, despite many, many challenges! Although the pandemic and its effects are still with us, the beginning of 2021 saw the Museum emerge from its enforced slumber and cautiously reopen. Gradually restrictions loosened until we were close to pre-pandemic operating levels. The challenges of the Delta variant, of course, impacted our efforts but, with the safety of our patrons and staff always being central, we adapted and saw good visitation at all three of our sites throughout the year. Our online programming proved to be extremely popular, and we have maintained good levels of participation in addition to starting the return to inperson programming. Of course, fundamental to our ability to do anything is the support of loyal and generous supporters. As you can read in the following pages, despite all the challenges of the pandemic our constituency has continued to support our efforts to tell the story of the American Civil War as only we can. Our annual fund finished the year at $333,933 while our membership totals ended up at $121,930. In addition, strong support from the Commonwealth of Virginia meant we finished the year with a $370,545 operating surplus. Looking ahead, we have much to be excited about. Our strategic plan, designed to take the institution to the next level of recognition at a national stage and strengthen all our existing efforts, will be completed in early 2022

and set the course and direction for the next five years. In addition, the opening of the new Robins Theater will see our fantastic new immersive film take center stage and that, in addition to our new ambitious multi-year program entitled ‘The Civil War and the Re-making of America,’ will serve to cement our reputation as the preeminent Civil War institution. All in all, our future looks very bright indeed, and I both thank you all for your support and look forward to working with you in the years to come.

Rob Havers President & CEO

As we fought through the pandemic, the American Civil War Museum became stronger and more effective. Remarkably, our mission of telling the whole story of the Civil War became more important than ever and our performance of that mission excelled. Strong executive leaders, a brilliant staff, and engaged Board members rose to the challenges that confronted our nation these past two years. We have made creative use of online communication and have skillfully restored in-person activities. We have emerged in excellent financial condition thanks to generous support from COVID relief programs, the Commonwealth of Virginia, foundations, donors, and our members. In the coming months, we will debut our muchanticipated Robins Theater and new state-of-the-art immersive film. We will also roll out an ambitious forward looking strategic plan. We will host our annual Symposium in-person at the Tredegar Foundry on February 19, 2022.

Southern AMBITIONS 10

WINTER 2021

Exhibit Opened By Christopher Graham Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the American Civil War Museum in July 2020 opened the second temporary exhibition in the second-floor gallery of its Tredegar site. “Southern Ambitions” explores what policymakers, statesmen, and journalists envisioned for their nation in the international community after the Confederacy won its independence. Exhibit visitors follow the transformation of Confederate ambitions over the four years of war – from their brightest hopes to their greatest fears about their nation’s place in the world – and encounter the core tenets of Confederate ideology, including their progressive view of global economic integration and their racially conservative approach to the problems of labor in their modern world. Along the way, the exhibit invites visitors to consider the place of supply chains, free trade, and constitutional republics in a radical world, and, finally, to consider whether any Confederate ambitions survived the defeat of the slaveholding republic. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funded “Southern Ambitions.” A team from the American Civil War Museum developed the project, and Solid Light, Inc. of Louisville, Kentucky, designed and built it. The exhibit is based on the scholarship of Dr. Adrian R. Brettle (University of Virginia, Ph.D. 2014), Lecturer at Arizona State University, which is now published as Colossal Ambitions: Confederate Planning for a Post-Civil War World (University of Virginia Press).

A diverse collaboration of people have been working from across the country to create the Museum’s new immersive film in its Robins Theater, opening spring 2022. We are eager to bring this film experience to our Historic Tredegar location and transport visitors through the causes, course, and aftermath of the Civil War in ways that make the rich, complex, and deeply human stories of the era come alive. Excited to see the film in person? Stay tuned for more information, including official opening dates in spring 2022.

Kansas City, MO: Staff from the Museum and the film’s creator, Solid Light, filmed live-action sequences on a soundstage in Missouri with period film production experts, Wide Awake Films. Seasoned filmmakers and historians alike were particularly moved by the performances of the actors, and the anticipated impact of the scenes will have layered with all of the film’s other components.

SEPTEMBER

Richmond, VA: General contractor Whiting Turner began fit-out construction of the theater space, including reworking air ducts, building out walls and wiring, and adding drywall to the walls and ceiling.

Here is a snapshot of the wide range of work underway since our last update in April 2021.

Louisville, KY: Museum staff visited Solid Light’s offices to see a 50%-scale version of the film’s dual screens, as well as preview the film’s score, narrator, voice actors, animated maps, and preliminary edits. Staff were struck by the cumulative impact of the film’s components assembled together, especially the unexpectedly refreshing score, to make an already powerful story even more moving.

The Teacher Advisory Councils

Since 2014 the Education Department has

looked to teachers to help guide our work. After all, who knows more about what educators need in the classroom than those doing the work? In the last seven years, the Teacher Advisory Council has been invaluable as we navigated the consolidation of our museums, developed new education programs, and worked through a global pandemic. It is not an understatement to say that without the partnership developed by the teachers on the council ours would be a less effective and less focused department. Upon receiving a grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia last year, we decided to expand our Teacher Advisory Council by creating one that recruited nationally and another that focused on the specific needs of Virginia Teachers. This year we have gone a step further by partnering with the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. This new partnership in which the Virginia Council advises and works with both organizations has already yielded positive results, by reaching educator applicants whom we previously were unable to recruit. This year we had a record number of applications to join our councils, and making the final cuts was not easy. Of the 38 total candidates to apply, the

24 that have been selected are stand-out educators with a passion for the work. Each of the eight Superintendent’s Regions of the VDOE is represented on the Virginia Council, including Southside and Southwest VA. The National Council includes teachers from Arkansas, Vermont, Georgia, and Wisconsin, and, for the first time, California. It is both an exciting and trying time for education in the United States and in Virginia, but with the guidance of these exemplary educators, we are sure to shine!

By Kelly Hancock

After more than a year and a half of virtual programming, we are planning for the 2022 annual Symposium to be an in-person event. What is more, we will be holding the Symposium at Historic Tredegar for the first time. Utilizing the Foundry building (the former home of the American Civil War Center) as our lecture hall, we not only will have room for a socially distanced event but also have the advantage of being next to the Museum with all its amenities. For those too distant to travel or unable to attend in person, we will be offering a live stream option. As we delve into this year’s theme, “The Soldier’s Civil War,” we will examine how ordinary men, faced with violence, loneliness, fear, death, and, for Black men, racism, coped during the war and how the impact of war affected their postwar lives. Five sessions will explore aspects of soldiers’ experiences both during and after the war. To kick off the daylong symposium, Dr. Peter Carmichael (Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies, Director of the Civil War Institute,

Gettysburg College) will discuss letters written by Southern soldiers, whose education was so limited, they essentially spoke rather than wrote their letters. Carmichael, who spent nearly ten years writing The War for the Common Soldier (UNC Press, 2018), pored over numerous letters and records of soldiers from both the North and the South. Dr. Lesley Gordon (Charles G. Summersell Chair of Southern History, University of Alabama) will use her case study of the 2nd Texas Infantry to examine the impact of allegations of cowardice, a subject that until recently has gone largely unexplored. Discussing the escape of 3,000 Union prisoners of war, Dr. Lorien Foote (Patricia & Bookman Peters Professor of History, Texas A&M University) will explore U.S. soldier’s experiences in the final days of the war as well as the transformation of the Confederate homefront to the battle front. Closing sessions will examine the war’s aftermath. Dr. Holly Pinheiro (Assistant Professor of History at Furman University), will explore the impact of the war on African-American soldiers and their families, revealing how economic and social instability, introduced by military service, resonated for years and even generations after soldiers left the battlefield. Dr. Jonathan Jones (Assistant Professor of History at Virginia Military Institute) will conclude the symposium with a talk focused on the opioid crisis among Civil War veterans.

In partnership with UVA’s John L. Nau III Center for Civil War History and sponsored by Americana Corner, the Symposium will be hosted and moderated by Dr. Caroline Janney, director of the Nau center, and held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The registration fee is $75 for nonmembers, $50 for members, and $25 for students and educators. The streaming fee is $30. Visit our website acwm.org to register or call Kelly Hancock our public programs manager at 804-649-1861 ext. 121.
