Reinventing the Court Shoe with Lacoste Sport

This collaboration with Lacoste sport was a team project, devised to help gain experience in multiple areas of design. Working with fashion marketing we produced a concept that fit both within current market trends but also aimed to push the use of rapid prototyping techniques. During this project we explored, fashion trends, marketing, developing technologies and branding.

Pentland/Lacoste Placement April 2013 - July 2013 Due to confideciality reasons I am unable to provide my work that I completed during my placement at Lacoste. I can however provide two references from my line manager and senior designer who I worked with. Feedback: David Hickman - Senior Footwear Designer “Adam has a very good understanding of design. He showed that he understands the process required to produce strong design solutions. His research was very in-depth and wide ranging which greatly benefitted his final design as well as enthusing the team at his final Presentation. His is a very easy person to work with; he has a great work ethic and an easy going personality. Adam listened to advice and was open to alternative ideas. This open-minded approach showed a willingness to grow and learn which was demonstrated in his final design and presentation. I enjoyed having Adam as part of our team and he would be an asset to any team.”

Feedback: Brian Kutsch - Line Manager “It was a pleasure to have Adam on the Lacoste team. He approached his first work placement with professionalism and class. Adam worked on two footwear projects for Lacoste Sport. These focused on performance lifestyle nautical silhouettes for a consumer that is ahead of the masses with their style. He started a bit slow but as he went through the process he began to speed up to a good level. Adam approached these projects through sound research. He took this research and logically designed towards the set brief. All along the way, Adam took feedback in a positive light, which allowed him to continuously refine his initial designs. Combining the research and feedback, he was able to complete two final design solutions that were brand and market relevant. To complete the projects, Adam presented his work back to a group of nearly twenty product creation professionals, which can be a nerve-racking experience for any new designer. He took on the challenge and effectively communicated his design work to a Lacoste designer Level. Adam’s future growth should continue to focus on always learning to build his capabilities. For him to realize his full potential, he will need to break out of his comfort zone and interact with as many different professionals as possible. Adam has a bright future ahead of him. His willingness to be ‘always learning’ is his biggest asset at this point of his career. He has a good foundation approach to design from research to ideation sketching, which comes through in his final design solutions. As he gains experience and builds his capabilities, I’m confident he will blossom into a top-level designer and would recommend him for another placement.”

Present:

I am currently in my third year of study of Design for Industry at Northumbria University, Newcastle. I am required to complete varying design briefs which require both creativity but at the same time critical analysis in completing the task in an appropriate way. Time management is essential to keep to ridged deadlines as well as having to juggle multiple briefs at any one time. Many of the projects completed involve teams making my communication between peers vital in succeeding to answer the brief. Using visuals such as sketching and CAD work, as well as clear verbal communication being an attribute to this.

Skills & Leisure: Leisure:

Running and Cross-country Competing in the West Yorkshire cross-country championships (2006-2010), also many other competitions. Providing me with a focus in addition to education. I continue to run but not in the same competitive manor. I am qualified as an athletics coach and volunteer at my local athletics club (2006-2011), allowing me to develop an understanding of how to relate to a younger age group and work with their needs. Currently I am the vice captain of the University Water-Polo Team, this involves me having clear communication with both the coach and supporting the captain. Helping to maintain a strong team and keeping the team motivated for the several training sessions we have a week.

Software:

I am familiar with multiple 2D and 3D software packages such Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, Graphite, Solidworks 2013 and Rhino.

Life Experiences:

Travelled to Tanzania in the summer of 2011, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, which was one of my most physically challenging experiences. As a part of the trip, I work at a school, volunteering teaching maths and English as well as being apart of the team repairing the building.

My placement experiance:

Quick Overview:

During my time at Pentalnd I was required to regularly communicate to different members of the various brands in which Pentland owns. Making sure that I clearly understood what was needed from me. This was great as I was able to regularly attain feedback, being very useful to move designs on at a fast pace and complete tasks to a deadline. Projects undertaken for Pentland were branding projects for both Ellesse and KangaROOS. Producing a graphic that would reflect the brands accurately for a simple totem. While working with Lacoste I completed a shoe design project, developing a shoe for a new market that they are entering. This required me to attain the relevant market research and produce a concise development presentation from research to final concept. Unfortunately I can’t show the work online due to confidentiality, but I can show areas of the work at interview. The most rewarding part of my placement was the final presentation, presenting to 20 design professionals. Helping to improve my presentation skills and boost my confidence in understanding my development process and making it clear to my pears. Attaining useful feedback on how to improve my designs and also where I had succeeded in producing a credible final product.
