Exchanges fosters cultural and global connections through art. DAVA youth created a variety of art objects for trade that reveal their cultural traditions. A snail mail art exchange project open to public participation adds another activity to the exhibition. The exhibit with an opening reception on opens July 11, 4 - 7:30 p.m., and will be open to the public until Aug. 29, 2014. After examining the purpose of cultural exchanges and global trade, DAVA middle school students researched important objects and designs that reflect their cultural heritage. They created games, kites, kitchen ware, wearable items and musical instruments to be used during the show or to be traded with others after the exhibition. We will jump into medieval times as we explore the land of castles, knights and dragons. Boys and girls alike will enjoy this exciting workshop filled with adventure. We will draw a variety of characters and items familiar to this time, including knights in armor, jesters juggling, jousters, catapults and more. We will even take our castle theme and enter the funny land of cartoons as we illustrate the humor of the time. Two large scenes will be created including one of a large castle with a moat and the other of a fiery dragon full of detail and color. Join us this summer for many adventures from this long-ago time. 14TH COLORADO DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL

The Colorado Dragon Boat Festival (CDBF) celebrates its 14th year on July 19 and 20, 2014 at Sloan’s Lake Park in Denver. New features include a Culinary Dojo with cooking demonstrations and a Lion Dance Extravaganza. The festival will spotlight the Philippines, to raise awareness for 7
the ongoing recovery efforts from last fall’s Typhoon Haiyan. CDBF is the largest pan-Asian festival in the country and the premiere summertime family event in the Rocky Mountain region, attracting over 110,000 guests every year. Visitors can enjoy 100 performances on five stages, including traditional and contemporary culture and cultural exhibits and demonstrations. They will also find fun shopping and authentic dining in the Asian Marketplace, two Taste of Asia food courts, and activities for kids in Dragonland. And of course, there will be two days of actionpacked dragon boat racing, featuring our fleet of six Hong Kong-style dragon boats! The festival this year is being held a week earlier than previous years, because of a conflict at Sports Authority Field. For several years, Grand Design, Inc. has hosted its annual Street Parade and Ice Cream Social at the Boettcher Aurora Boys and Girls Club. The purpose of the Street Parade is similar to a neighborhood block party—letting the neighbors know the club exists, showcasing some of the disciplines, including choir, drumming, ballet, tap, hip hop, precision movement and piano, and getting to know some of the businesses along the East Colfax corridor. The youth will parade from the Boys and Girls Club along East Colfax (with a police escort) to Fletcher Plaza where they will demonstrate what they have learned through the performing arts disciplines. Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Northglenn Youth Theatre program with this collaboration 9
between Northglenn Youth Theatre and History Hunter Youth Project. Written by Richie Castro; directed by Kimberly Jongejan and Richie Castro. Travel with the History Hunter through time to bring to life the forgotten true stories about a collection of heroes from a variety of cultures. Along with their sprite guides, led by Scout, they discover the power of the magical “sikulis.” Using the History Hunter’s mysterious and enchanted guitar, stories transform into marvelous song and dance, bringing historical characters to life.
