Late Music is dedicated to promote the rich and diverse sound world of today’s music, programming the music of living composers only. We are also dedicated to affordability with a maximum ticket price of £10/£8 only. All Late Music concerts take place at York’s beautiful Unitarian Chapel in St Saviourgate, we hope to see you there.

Peyee Chen Saturday 6th November, 1.00pm Peyee Chen presents an intriguing recital which explores the connection between words, sounds and music. The recital includes two works by the flamboyant, even playful sound world of Greek composer Georges Aperghis, Roger Marsh’s deeply moving, A Little Snow, and features a very rare outing for the great Samuel Beckett’s Not I.

Juice Vocal Trio Saturday 6th November, 7.30pm Love Labour Loss: the innovative vocal trio, Juice (Kerry Andrew, Sarah Dacey and Anna Snow), have commissioned ten diverse UK composers/songwriters to write a three-minute‘love song’.These include Gavin Bryars,Anna Meredith, Damien Harron, Errollyn Wallen, Jim Moray award-winning folk artist and Mica Levi of internationally-acclaimed artpop band Micachu and the Shapes to create a three-minute new work.

Richard Casey Friday 3rd December, 7.30pm Opening with Richard Whalley’s response to M.C. Escher’s print lithograph,Three Worlds, the programme interweaves pieces by composers based in Manchester and York. Richard Casey’s piano recital is framed by two works by John Adams, and at the centre, a Late Music commission by Composer-in-Residence, Michael Parkin.


Upcoming events for 10/11 York St John University recital Saturday 4th December, 1.00pm Late Music welcomes back the Third Year YSJU students specialising in performance to host this lunchtime recital.The programme will involve an eclectic mix of solo, ensemble, original compositions and improvised performances.

The Chinese Calendar Unfolds Saturday 4th December, 7.30pm To celebrate composer Chris Gander’s 60th birthday, Late Music is staging his magical musical theatre work,The Chinese Calendar Unfolds.The work is based on the characters in the Chinese calendar, making twelve short movements in total. Using a variety of delicate instruments – guitar, mandolin, accordion, Chinese and Latin percussion as well as piano and voice and masks, the group Panoply will musically narrate the story, bringing to life the personal characteristics of each animal.

Matthew Jones (violin/viola) & Michael Hampton (piano) Saturday 5th March, 7.30pm Matthew is professor of violin, viola and chamber music at Trinity College of Music, London, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Charterhouse International Music Festival. He has recorded six CDs: two Bridge Duo recordings of English music, one of Hilary Tann’s chamber music, one of Haflidi Hallgrimsson’s chamber works, one of Welsh violin works and most recently a Prokofiev disc for Naxos.

Jazz featuring the Paul Baxter Trio Friday 1st April, 7.30pm The Paul Baxter Trio, featuring IDST’s Jonny Tomlinson on piano,Threads Orchestra’s Kris Wright on drums and Paul on double Bass, will perform a collection of original, contemporary jazz compositions.

David Ward MacLean Saturday 2nd April, 1.00pm Local singer/songwriter, David Ward MacLean, performs his latest collection of original songs.

Paul Carey Jones (baritone) and Jane Samuel (piano) Saturday 2nd April, 7.30pm Paul Carey Jones makes a welcome return to Late Music, and once again composers will be invited to set York poets, continuing the partnership with the York Literature Festival.The concert will include readings and a pre-concert talk by one of the composers.

Lunar Saxophone Quartet Saturday 7th May, 1.00pm LSQ performances span a wide range of occasions and venues including Bryn Terfel’s Faenol Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Deal Festival, Cambridge Summer Music Festival and the Welsh Proms as well as recitals at established chamber music venues such as Lauderdale House, Wales Millennium Centre and The Warehouse plus TV and radio work with BBC Radio Wales, BBC Wales Today and BBC Radio 5 Live.

The Bingham String Quartet Saturday 7th May, 7.30pm The BSQ takes innovative programming - premieres, cross-cultural and multimedia works, electronics and new technology - and combines it with many years experience and familiarity with the great classical string quartet repertoire, thereby fusing together the fragments of these colliding worlds. BSQ programming is tremendously varied, making use of its vast range of repertoire, and aims to defy the perceived barriers of the string quartet by juxtaposing differing musical styles and languages to provide an“edge of the seat”experience.

Ian Pace Saturday 4th June, 7.30pm Ian Pace’s extensive repertoire of classical works includes in particular the Sonatas of Beethoven and Schubert, Liszt’s original works and operatic transcriptions, the works of Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Debussy, Ravel, Ives, Janacek, Bartok, Stravinsky, Schoenberg and many others. Renowned for exciting and engaging performances of the most demanding and intricate music of today, Ian also regularly appears with the Arditti Quartet, having performed the piano quintet Spur by Beat Furrer in Vienna, Frankfurt, Strasbourg and Cheltenham.
