PRODUCT – RANGE - DISTRIBUTION Statement of Intent Rationale (200 words) What do you want to do and why? An overarching statement of the direction of your own design practice, areas of interest and what this will allow you to explore……. AND WHY? My design practice focus is certainly edging towards type and layout regardless of what form it takes. I want to use my new knowledge gained from the typography module as a basis for my development. I am sure I want to create some sort of packaging design, because I want to create tangible product appose to a poster or magazine spread. My experience of packaging graphics has been unbalanced as I have had good and bad experiences and now I want to attempt it again. I have an interest in both design for the entertainment industry such as music, film, and tv but also clean, sharp graphic design, which at times both are contrasting. I don’t have a set design approach or style as of yet, but I feel my work is totally reflective of myself although I have enjoyed what I have done so far. I feel now is the time to really find out what I want to do. Statement of Intent (200 words) What do you intend to do in order for you to fulfil your rationale, creative intentions and individual ambitions? PRODUCT I want to create DVD artwork for a one off re-issue of a film. RANGE I want to create a range of DVD artwork for a series of films. DISTRIBUTION I want to deliver the DVD’s as a special edition boxset. What will you produce and what will you propose? I want to produce DVD packaging for a series of comedy films starring Jim Carrey. The films will be presented in a Special edition boxset. The films will pay homage to Carrey’s career and will be a celebration of the actors success. The artwork will be sequenced and relevant but there will be an overlaying design aesthetic running throughout that will tie the collection together.

BRIEF (200 words)

In order to achieve this what brief will you be responding to (attach a copy ) and how will this fulfil your intentions?

This brief will fulfil my intentions as it will add to the diverse range of work in my portfolio but will also give me an opportunity to work with type and layout.

3.

RESEARCH

In responding to this brief what areas of research will you have to undertake? What activities will this involve? What material will this research generate? PRIMARY SOURCES/MATERIAL SECONDARY SOURCES/MATERIAL My research will take on more secondary source material however; I will collate a series of films based on the opinions of others. I will look at existing artwork for each film and see if I can take inspiration from those as well as contemporary DVD packaging.

4.

PRACTICAL DEVELOPMENT

In responding to this brief what practical skills, workshop facilities and production methods will you use? What activities will this involve? At what point in the brief will you use them? What will they help you to achieve? I would like to do some sort of screen printing but I believe that digital printing this artwork could be more beneficial to me, as I will be creating one off artwork. I may make use of the laser cut facilities should my packaging become technical. I also plan to create a small publication for the films, which will include an actors biography and writes up on the films. I also wish to use other print production techniques such as foils and embossing. 5.

RECORDING, DOCUMENTATION & EVALUATION

What methods will you use to record , document and evaluate your progress practical and contextual investigations in response to this brief? How will you get feedback? How and when will you evaluate your progress and what will you evaluate your progress against? My design practice blog will become my main source to document my development and photography will be used to record my paper-based work. The blog will become a record of all the work I create for the brief with on-going analysis and evaluation. I will also use the design context blog as a way to display my ongoing inspiration into all aspects of the design process. Crits will be the main source of feedback from tutors and peers and I will also review the work in progress against the criteria set in the brief and module brief to ensure I am fulfilling all criteria. I will continually review my progress through the use of blogs to make sure I am always making informed decisions.
