COIMBRA 21 - 24 NOVEMBER 2018

13TH EDITION beaworldfestival.com

Where creativity meets business Another record edition of the Bea World Festival will soon be celebrated in the beautiful and charming city of Coimbra. A total of 303 entries, from 122 of the most important agencies in Europe and in the world, took part in the 13th edition of the most important and authoritative award in the field of events and live communication. Numbers clearly reveal thatthe Festival of Events and Live Communication offers an extremely successful formula, as it manages to combine a celebration of the premium quality of projects produced during the year with networking opportunities among participants, mostly top managers from both agencies and corporate clients. It also provides the opportunity to follow a programme rich in content, some of whichcertainly surprising, always of great inspiration for all participants. It is no coincidence that ‘Creative Thinking. The Art of Breaking Routines’ is the theme that inspires the programme’s content and, more generally, the Festival. Corporate clients are at the centre of this international platform conceived by Adc Group. They are the ones who will judge competing projectsas well as being the ones with whom the agencies, which aim to con-

quer the coveted Elephant awards, can deal with directly in order to develop business activities. This has happened in the past and we expect it to happen in the future. After all, the Festival’s claim is ‘Where Creativity Meets Business’. Among this year’snovelties I want to mention the introduction of the brand new Best Location Awards, reserved to a keycomponentin the success of an event: the place and the territory in which it takes place. This is certainly an important and courageous step in the evolution of Bea World, which will receive the attention it deservesin the near future. I wish all a great Bea World Festival!

An opportunity for sharing experiences and creating knowledge In Apecate, the Portuguese Association of Congresses, Tourism Animation and Events, our goal is to defend the interests of our associates, promoting and improving their knowledge and training, creating more sustainability. As co-organizers, for the second edition we wanted to demonstrate that Portugal is more than just Lisbon and Porto, two incredibly wonderful cities, but with an overload of events. Thus, we chose Coimbra as the Bea World 2018 host city, showing the world’s most influential event agencies and clients that we are indeed capable of organizing successful events outside of major cities. We know this event is an excellent opportunity for all participants, but also for Apecate, so it is an honor to be the co-organizer of Bea World Festival, promoting interaction between different agencies from around the world and the Portuguese, sharing experiences, developing concepts and creating knowledge through creative thinking and the art of breaking routines.

The success of the past two editions was only possible with the good support of Apecate associates, our institutional partners, Tourism of Portugal, Turismo Centro de Portugal and the Municipality of Coimbra, as well as many other partners that allowed us to provide you with this programme and to whom our special thanks go to. Apecate wishes you a wonderful stay in the Center of Portugal. Welcome to Coimbra! PRESIDENT APECATE

Bea World Festival, the beginning of a successful path As Vice-President of Apecate, I think that after two editions of this important international event, Bea World, we have walked a successful path. We have placed three destinations on the map of international events: Porto, Coimbra and São Miguel Island in the Azores, that welcomed the Bea World 2018 Advisory Board Meeting, providing several national companies with a network of international partners and demonstrating the unique hospitality and professionalism of the Portuguese. This is indeed an exceptional opportunity for Portuguese companies to position themselves in the global market. Coimbra and the Center of Portugal have provided our companies with a unique opportunity to affirm themselves before more than 600 representatives from international companies. Apecate took a risk when bringing Bea World to Portugal. Despite our small structure, we knew that we could take this step and count on the active participation of our associates and partners to produce two successful editions of the

event. To all international agencies, we want to say that Apecate has its doors open to help you bring your events to Portugal. Thank you to the Bea World team members, who worked hard to transform this project into a reality for all Festival attendees, and also a special thanks to the Apecate associates, to our institutional partners and to all the companies that joined this initiative. As the General Producer of Bea World 2018, I hope you enjoy the Festival. Welcome to Portugal!

The Centre of Portugal, a favorite destination for all visitors It is with great honor and satisfaction that the Centre of Portugal region hosts the 2018 edition of Bea World Festival. We receive this event at a time when this region has definitely become a preferred choice for visitors from all around the world. In 2017, the numbers of overnight stays and guests in the Centre of Portugal were historical, having surpassed all previous records. More and more visitors are discovering the unique charms of the Centre of Portugal, the largest and most diversified tourism region in Portugal. This is an unparalleled destination for those who want to try diverse experiences, as it reconciles World Heritage sites with Europe’s best surf coast, idyllic spas, world-known places of worship, genuine and picturesque villages and the almost untouched nature appeal, which invites to trekking or cycling. Experiences that are complemented with the food and the wines of the Centre of Portugal, resulting in a feast for both the body and the soul. This is also a region that knows how to welcome business. It

has attracted many large international events, of which the Bea World Festival is a classic example, thanks to locations with the quality of Convento São Francisco in Coimbra, where this Festival is taking place. The Centre of Portugal, named in 2017 as Preferred Destination for Ectaa (The European Travel Agents and Tour Operators’ Association), welcomes you with open arms! Enjoy your stay at Bea World 2018!

Convento São Francisco, an outstanding venue From November 21st to 24th, Convento São Francisco is hosting Bea World Festival 2018, bringing the best practices in the events industry worldwide and their highly skilled professionals to Coimbra. It is, therefore, an honour for the Municipality of Coimbra to receive an event of this dimension and to be partnering its organisation. We did not hesitate when the challenge was launched by Turismo Centro de Portugal and Apecate. It is an opportunity to learn from the best and also to introduce our city and region to those that will visit us in the context of this International Festival of Events and Live Communication.

The fact that Bea World Festival 2018 takes place at the Convento São Francisco, brings us added satisfaction. The Host Location

Coimbra & its venues The cradle of Portugal’s most beloved traditions, the region of Coimbra is the perfect destination if your desire is to be surrounded by the secrets of nature, travel through the memory of the most beautiful stories of our country and discover the treasures of Baixo Mondego. Enchanted woods, picturesque villages and refreshing beaches wait for you. Visiting Coimbra is to make times past come alive by participating in some of the oldest traditions of the Country and discovering the treasures of our past. In its seven centuries of heritage, the University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia played an absolutely indisputable role as the center of origin and conveyance of knowledge. In this particularly monumental case, part of the Unesco World Heritage List since June 2013, it is important to value not only the Patio of the Schools, the heart of the University with the Tower of the Goat proudly marking the horizon, but also Sofia Street and its colleges,

where the history of the University began to be written. From the most travelled Portuguese Way of Santiago, which passes through Coimbra, to the annual Serenade in what is known as the ‘City of Students’, the most curious travelers have the unique opportunity in this city to be part of history through secular rituals, breathtaking monuments and magical places. In Coimbra, the imposing Sé Velha Cathedral, the Botanical Garden and the majestic Santa Clara Monastery are obligatory stops during your walk. Coimbra is one of the most romantic places in Portugal, which once witnesses the love of Pedro and Inês. So, to relive this tragic love, lose yourself in the enchanted rails of the Garden of Quinta das Lágrimas, filled with age-old trees, medieval ruins, ponds and streams. Coimbra has much to offer and you will undoubtedly want to explore every corner of this beautiful and remarkable city.

23

The Centre of Portugal Visiting the Centre of Portugal is to live a destination rich in experiences. Known for its genuine welcome in receiving visitors with the best it has to offer, it is no coincidence that the largest region of Portugal has been placed on the map of destinations to visit by several international media. Some of itssites have been deemed to be of outstanding universal value and included in the Unesco World Heritage List. This is the case of the Monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha, the Convent of Christ in Tomar and Coimbra University. But there are other unique places that are well worth discovering. The Schist Villages and the Historical Villages were formed in an area full of natural riches. Here, you can discover numerous trails that go through the towns and enjoy a walking, riding or car visit. But it’s not only medieval Portugal that can be found in Centre. The cities, where modernity is combined with tradition, can be very attractive to those who prefer browsing through the local stores. In Leiria, all shops are located in the beautiful artistic buildings at the heart of the city. Near Leiria, there is a place deeply rooted in history, love and peace. Going to FĂĄtima means travelling to the biggest holy placein Portugal. If you like to take a break to rest enjoying the flavours of the Centre, you can always taste our delicious treats, delicacies or outstanding

24

traditional gastronomy, as well as an excellent wine selection. The city of Viseu is one of the best places to complete a wine experience, whilst still taking in the heritage, art and history of the city. In Coimbra, you can be a part of history through magical monuments and places. Don’t miss a visit to the region of Bairrada, a land of mountains and sea, swims and wines, gastronomy and sports. Taste the irresistible Bairrada suckling pig together with one of the most awarded national sparkling wines. Finally, let yourself be taken in by an ‘ocean’ of experiences in the region of Aveiro. And don’tlet your journey end without first trying out the delicious “ovosmoles”. In Middle Tagus, you must visit Castelo de Bode Dam, known for the purity of its waters. And you may as well go through the Tagus Castle Route, or the religious tourist route around Fátima and Tomar. In the West, travel to the scenic walled village of Óbidos and take the opportunity to relax your “body and soul” at Santa Cruz beach, in Torres Vedras. If you’re a lover of adventure sports, don’t leave out Peniche and Nazaré, famous for their iconic waves which make them some of the best surfingdestinations in the whole world. From mountains to seas, there are many reasons to visit the Centre of Portugal!

What’s the value of content at Bea World Festival? As the world changes, new technologies and practices are introduced. What we learned yesterday usually becomes obsolete by the time we’re ready to start applying it to our job. It is a life-long learning process and we have to focus on gaining and sharing knowledge that is crucial for adapting to this ever-changing reality. At Bea World Festival participants and experts can meet and find ways to look at and solve problems from a different perspective, avoiding orthodox solutions and thinking outside the box. We call this ‘Creative Thinking. The Art of Breaking Routines’ and it is not about coming up with original ideas, but about making new connections between existing ideas. And this provides value to the participants if they learned something new and relevant for their business and know-how to apply it to their job and if they have built or developed connections with people of value to them. This is their personal benefit in return for the time and money spent to join the Festival.

And the educational programme will be measured against these objectives. A good learning environment will finally support this goal. Bea World opens minds with unconventional session formats, a strict ban on marketing fluff, new insights, best-practices, hands-on workshops and plenty of facilitated opportunities to interact with speakers, jury members, suppliers, potential clients and peers. Bea World Festival provides a great platform to grow networks and increase business opportunities to finally hit a big time Roi.
