One of the strengths of cabaret has always been its ability to tell stories and start discussions, and this year is no exception. In my final year as Artistic Director, I have made it my goal to present the most diverse group of incredible cabaret performers in the world, in a range of shows that reflect the global conversations that have grown from simple hashtags to real debate. There are thinkers, storytellers and activists, but there is also whimsy, comedy, high camp and of course, glamour for days! There are acts that I have tried desperately to get to our shores for years, and new discoveries I can’t wait to share. We also have some new initiatives: our program Space to Create aims to nurture new acts using the immense experience of those who work underneath the wings of the Festival Centre; and our discussion series The First Unsettlers will share stories of the people that created and changed the cabaret genre as we know it. This year, we have a show dedicated to songwriter Tom Waits, and alongside our opening and closing galas, the Family Gala continues to offer an event that audiences of all ages can enjoy together. I look forward to leading you through this glorious array of talent with our eyes, ears and hearts open and ready for enchantment.
ALI McGREGOR Artistic Director Adelaide Cabaret Festival
You are invited to join in this fabulous and fun celebration of live performance. Adelaide Cabaret Festival is the biggest and best cabaret festival in the world. The atmosphere is invigorating and intoxicating in this cornucopia of artistic creativity. Audiences and performers playfully interact to the challenges of exploring their emotional and intellectual boundaries. There is special joy in sharing these experiences as new discoveries are made about oneself and each other. The program offers a wide range of cabaret experiences relevant to the 21st century. It’s a fun adventure for all. I thank my fellow Adelaide Cabaret Festival Advocacy Committee members.

Welcome to Adelaide’s winning winter festival, as Artistic Director Ali McGregor curates an impressive array of perspectives and creative personalities. As always, Adelaide Cabaret Festival is a true team effort. We thank Ali for her artistic leadership and we thank you, our loyal and enthusiastic audience, as well as our sponsors, staff, artists, and volunteers who make this festival shine every year. 2018 is a year to look forward to. The festival is back under one roof with the Festival Theatre reopening with a new entrance following the redevelopment of its foyers, bars, and cafes, and the new Walk of Fame. The Walk of Fame’s illuminated path is the main public connector of all our venues and celebrates Adelaide Festival Centre’s 45 year history and the artists who have helped make this place a great creative hub. Of the 133 stars on the Walk of Fame, 23 are Adelaide Cabaret Festival artists (including Todd McKenney, Nancye Hayes, and Johanna Allen whose shows you’ll find in this program). Check out page 31 for more about the Walk of Fame. We look forward to welcoming you to the Riverbank this winter.

AN OPENING NIGHT EXTRAVAGANZA FEATURING SOME OF THE WORLD’S FINEST CABARET STARS
A KID FRIENDLY CABARET FOR GROWNUPS AS WELL
Kick off the festival with the glitz and glamour of the opening night red carpet before being bedazzled by a shimmering showcase of what’s in store over the opening weekend.
A festival favourite for three years running, the Family Gala reminds us we’re all kids at heart. Rummaging through the cabaret junkyard, this year our performers will define the treasure from the trash.
One of the longest-running festival highlights, Artistic Director Ali McGregor plays ringmaster to a carnival of cabaret which promises to dazzle and delight. This tasting plate of talent makes the Variety Gala a perfect start to your Adelaide Cabaret Festival season.
Donned in her best glittered shoes and her gown of the finest recycled trash, host Ali McGregor leads a stellar cast of singers, dancers and comics in a night that will have even the grownups squealing.
“If this cocktail of cabaret stars isn’t enough to tempt you away from the heater then you just don’t know talent when you see it.”
“A pint-sized variety gala! Ten out of ten for family-friendly fun, high-energy musical performances, and a sense of occasion.”

DIFFICULT WOMAN Difficult women run the world. They are the hell raisers. The rule breakers. The glass ceiling obliterators. They make noise, waves, and a difference... but they never get the praise they deserve. Em Rusciano is difficult... and she’s fed up. Embracing her inner boss she’s taking the hard road because the easy road sucked. Professional lunatic, comedian and general trouble maker, Em Rusciano brings her powerful vocals and scandalous stand-up comedy to Adelaide Cabaret Festival for one night only, in a riotous celebration of lady-bosses that will leave fire in your belly and a strut in your step.

EMPIRE
A CARNIVAL OF SOUND AND SIDESHOW FROM THE ICONIC , GENRE DEFYING BAND Erupting in a raucous explosion of sound and colour reminiscent of the bulls of Pamplona, The Cat Empire comes to Adelaide Cabaret Festival.
“If you needed a definition for party, this was it.” Sydney Morning Herald
Undefinable by a single genre; fireworks, exotic flavours, and deep rhythms better describe the musical breadth of this great party band. Famous for their fiercely uplifting live shows and their signature horn section, the boys take audiences soaring with them, shirking responsibility on a perfect wave that feels like freedom, self-abandon and endless summer. Joined by a special guest line up of cabaret artists exclusively for one show only, this is a performance never to be repeated!

PEYROUX “She emits a heady aura of places lived and music absorbed that floats around her like a ghostly multiple exposure of faces and voices from the past.” The New York Times
Bringing jazz sensibility to her own brand of roots music, Madeleine Peyroux’s dusky lyrical style sits comfortably in everything from jazz standards and blues classics, to folky originals. Bursting onto the scene in the 1990s Peyroux was touted the new Billie Holiday, but has since carved out her own distinctive niche blending pop sensibility with more traditional vocal techniques. Showcasing her new album Anthem, she walks a delicate tightrope balancing humour, pathos, and irony, whilst weaving engaging narratives through songs that tackle the complexities of the modern age.

Armed only with a rose and a book, a woman walks into a bar looking for love…in all the wrong places. Hilariously risqué, yet breathtakingly tender, Taking it Up the Octave tells the story of a woman trying to make sense of the complexity of modern life.
“ ...hilariously steamy (and exceptionally high-pitched) burlesque.” In Daily

In a world where Rainy Days And Mondays collide, one man’s solitary journey to find himself has only just begun! In this satirical but heartfelt story, Richard Carpenter steps away from the band and away from his sister, in a razor-sharp tragicomedy packed with creative and irreverent reimaginations of some classic 70s pop. Played by Matthew Floyd Jones, (one half of Frisky & Mannish) the once sideman, now front man, embarks on his own voyage of self-discovery in an affectionate parody that is definitely not endorsed by the real Richard Carpenter.

T H E WO R S T WO M A N I N S Y D N E Y QUEEN OF SYDNEY’S UNDERWORLD, OR PEOPLE’S HERO? 107 criminal convictions, 13 stretches in gaol, grog dealer and purveyor of cocaine; was Kate Leigh really the ‘worst woman in Sydney?’ From the 1920s to the 1940s the newspapers had plenty to say about Australia’s most notorious matriarch, but in this powerful and sassy performance Libby O’Donovan revisits the myths surrounding the criminal mastermind. Weaving story with song she casts a bright new light on Leigh’s fierce and fabulous life.
“Her voice is sultry and versatile, moving from fast-paced songs to lilting lullabies with ease.”
IMAGINE CONNIE FRANCIS AND NANCY SINATRA ON A DESERT DEATH TRIP Carla Lippis returns to Adelaide with the Australian premiere of her critically acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe Festival show. Lending her formidable voice to both originals and recontextualised classics, she fuses the tropes of rock and roll performance with the lyricism of theatre. Backed by an ensemble who specialise in the unorthodox, the dark, and the evocative, Lippis’ menacing stage persona leaves audiences reeling.
“From the emotional delivery to the vocal technique to the musical ambition, it’s all turned up to 11... a wild ride.”

ROCK Written by Mikelangelo Musical direction by Mikelangelo and Dave Evans Accordion and piano by Dave Evans
MIKELANGELO AS
THE BALKAN ELVIS ELVIS HAS RE-ENTERED THE BUILDING... WELL, SORT OF What if the king of Rock and Roll had been born in Eastern Europe and played piano accordion? Mikelangelo brings his alter ego Johnny Presley – the Balkan Elvis – in this wild and wonderful quest for fame, fortune and love behind the Iron Curtain. Living under Eastern Bloc communist rule, our charming and misguided chancer holds up a skewed mirror to the American Elvis. Reimagining Elvis’ hits as lilting waltzes and barnstorming Balkan wedding polkas, Elvis hasn’t been this much outrageous fun since 1956 – funny, moving and dead sexy.

JANE CLIFTON A POWERFUL TRIBUTE TO A LASTING LEGACY In 2012, eleven time Grammy Award winner Linda Ronstadt announced to the world that Parkinson’s disease had rendered her unable to sing another note. It was an unimaginable tragedy for the iconic vocalist and a terrible loss for music lovers around the world. Brought to you by the team behind Southern Belles (Clare Moore and Rosie Westbrook) and featuring Ronstadt hits including ‘When will I be Loved’, ‘Blue Bayou’ and ‘You’re No Good’, this uplifting show reminds us that Ronstadt’s legacy is eternal. Award-winning actress (Prisoner/Neighbours/ Dr Blake Mysteries), recording artist and author Jane Clifton is magnificent.

EMMA PASK, ADAM PAGE, J A M I E M A C D O W E L L & TO M T H U M Music is a painting that is felt, rather than seen. In this brave, adventurous and incredibly conceptual show, four of Australia’s most exciting and genre-defying musicians come together to explore music around the 2018 festival theme ‘eyes open’. Award winning vocalist Emma Pask, endearing musician Jamie MacDowell, vocal beatbox instrumentalist Tom Thum, and undefinable looping wizard Adam Page, each bring a tight selection of standards and originals that they collectively reimagine with little more than jazz heart, vocal percussion and a loop pedal.

HARTSTONE

THE GIRL WHO JUMPED OFF THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN Written & performed by Joanne Hartstone Directed by Vince Fusco Lighting and production design by Tom Kitney
CHAPLINESQUE SLAPSTICK AND CIRCUS BUFFOONERY
WHAT IS THE COST OF BECOMING A STAR?
Self-professed ‘elegant buffoon’ Tom Flanagan melts hearts in this hilarious multi-award winning show for all ages. Sweeping audiences up in his mayhem, his antics have audiences rooting for a hapless romantic film projectionist flipped upside down by the lonely, dust covered world that surrounds him.
Clutching the sides of the Hollywood sign, aspiring actress Evie Edwards is about to tell us why she is up there. Looking out over the lights of Los Angeles, and the studio system that produced her nightmare, she takes the audience on a nostalgic journey through the golden age of Hollywood, told from a fresh and dark perspective.
Flanagan’s distinctive brand of slapstick is a beautiful nod to the age of black and white with a hint to the madness of modernity.
Written and performed by Joanne Hartstone, the show’s affecting Technicolor-styled performance makes a poignant statement about the human cost of America’s dream factory.
“Flanagan channelled every slapstick genius from Buster Keaton to Los Trios Ringbarkus...”
“Profound without being maudlin, sassy, smart, and above all edgy. This is an iron fist of a script nestling in a velvet glove.”

AS BALKAN ELVIS ‘THE PIANO HAS BEEN DRINKING, NOT ME.’ TOM WAITS Tom Waits once said of his influences, “a hero ain’t nothing but a sandwich.” In this very special tribute, Mikelangelo hosts some of the most unique and genuine voices of the festival as they reinterpret Waits’ distinctive Old Testament growl. Reinventing his imaginative sense of theatre, cool jazz, grizzled blues, and Tin Pan Alley, this unlikely collection of voices illuminates the long shadow cast by Waits’ towering musical influence.

In the last two years, Mariana Mezic has burst onto the Adelaide art scene with her vibrant, whimsical art. She creates vivid large scale paintings of women that are a spirited and beautiful explosion of colour straight from her heart and soul. Mariana says she draws the type of women she’s inspired by. “Brave, strong, fearless women. Tough-eyed women not to be messed with. Drawing women like that inspires me to keep on being brave in my work”. Working with graphite pencil and languid watercolours, Mariana’s distinctive work features bold, hyper-realistic faces surrounded by colourful and energetic scenes with objects that hold small clues, hinting at her subjects’ personalities.

IRREVERENT, SALACIOUS AND BOLD
Carmen Frida Leon Davidovich is the fictional love child of Frida Kahlo and Leon Trotsky. She is audacious, she is sensual, she is wry, she is intersex and it is the last day of her life. Carmen takes us on a reflective journey of discovery - an orphan, a refugee, a hermaphrodite and a human, in this fascinating, edgy and entertaining story of identity and survival. Carmen, Live or Dead celebrates difference with humour, authenticity and grace, breaking down the barriers of what it means to be a woman, a man, and ultimately, a human.

“Patti LuPone imparts the aura of a New York class act. Her songs are propelled by emotional purpose, intensity... and enormous comic flair.”
Multiple Tony and Grammy award winning star of the stage and screen Patti LuPone looks back at four decades in the business in a show that’s as much about how far Broadway has taken her, as where the Great White Way itself is heading. Sharing personal stories between songs, she weaves her love affair with theatre with indelible interpretations of classic Broadway tunes from Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Jule Styne, Stephen Schwartz, Charles Strouse, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. An unmissable opportunity to hear one of the contemporary Broadway greats.

GL A M O U R A NI M A L , DEVI L , O R T HE DEA DL IES T DI S T R A C T IO N? The supernova of international cabaret and festival favourite, Sven Ratzke returns to Australia in a spectacular embodiment of all that is fatal, peculiar and enigmatic in a man’s world. Armed only with his wit, his band, and the latest threads from Thierry Mugler, he discovers and uncovers the seducers and victims hiding amongst the pimps, lovers, angels and devils. Ratzke’s masterful storytelling is eclipsed only by his sensational vocal performances, including works by Rufus Wainwright, Dez Mona, Lou Reed, and Iggy Pop.

THE SONGS AND STORIES OF HEDWIG Up close and personal with the original Hedwig
Tony award winning, Golden Globe nominated co-creator of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, John Cameron Mitchell takes the stage, singing songs from the groundbreaking rock musical and subversive cult film. A SEED, AN ISLAND, AND A DREAMLIKE PROG-ROCK CONCERT
Like a child’s picture book brought to life in a concert An isolated volcanic island emerges from the ocean. A seed floats in from distant shores, finding purchase on the rock. A beetle, clinging to driftwood, washes ashore. Time and currents bring more and more new arrivals, by accident and design, to create a rich and varied home. Famous for producing emotionally challenging and engaging storytelling in rich live theatrical realms, Slingsby’s latest production is no exception. In this world premiere, a magical story is brought to life through original songs, and mesmerising projected imagery, that explore universal themes of strength and diversity.

DANCING WITH MY SPIRIT
Over twenty-five years ago Archie Roach and Tiddas teamed up with producer Jen Anderson and recorded a fabled demo. For years it sat collecting dust, a lost gem that had never reached the public’s ears. Until now. The miraculous reappearance of the recording has inspired a reunion after almost two decades, nearly as long as it’s been since the women of Tiddas have taken the stage. Don’t miss their sublime, multi-award winning voices as they join Roach on the Dancing with My Spirit album tour, playing these lost treasures.

“Nosferatutu is full of joy and madness, meta-theatricality and genre in-jokes.” Time Out
As the audience trickles in, a dancer stretches backstage. The doors close and an electricity spreads through the already charged room. The audience hungers, the applause begins. But one show goer claps louder. He is hungrier than most. He’s so happy he just might die; if he hadn’t already. Part vaudeville, part cabaret, part ballet, part operetta and part blood bath, Nosferatutu is an outrageous ride coursing the most sublime arias in history. Don’t miss this genrebending, tongue in cheek, musical meditation on art, beauty and solitude through the ages, by multi-award winning raconteurs Sheridan Harbridge and Tommy Bradson.

THE ROAD OF EXCESS LEADS TO THE PALACE OF WISDOM
From the time that Marie Antoinette was associated with the famous words “let them eat cake”, human beings have hungered for excess. Food. Sex. Success and validation. All innate human desires. But how many ‘likes’ on facebook, will make you feel full? This is a song catalogue of sugary excess and sweet gratification. Johanna Allen returns in a premiere show exploring historical exorbitance and present day self-absorption: Madonna’s Material Girl on cello, Cole Porter’s Let’s Do It with body percussion, and Kylie’s Confide in Me in tango form. Popular music reimagined. Desire and devouring. Reckless consumption has never sounded so good… Written and performed by Johanna Allen Directed and choreographed by Michael Ralph

IN LOVE
SONGS PROJECT
Written by Adriano Cappelletta Directed by Johann Walraven Musical Direction by Nicholas Tipping
ADRIANO CAPPELLETTA FINDING LOVE IN THE URBAN JUNGLE WAS IMPOSSIBLE, UNTIL HE MET FELIX In this rollicking one man show, Gaulier-trained actor, clown, singer and dancer Adriano Cappelletta unleashes a hilarious and uplifting gay romcom cabaret. Thirty-five, living in the world of Grindr and instant hookups, Ado has never fallen in love. That is until he meets Felix, a human rights lawyer graced with Hugh Grant’s charm and adorned in an Italian suit. In his brilliant solo performance, Cappelletta dares audiences not to fall in love with him while Ado is swept head over heels for the first time.
THE CONTINUATION OF CULTURAL PRACTICE AND SONG TRADITIONS INTO THE 21ST CENTURY Reviving contemporary Australian Indigenous songs from 1900 to 1999, Mission Songs Project focuses on the Christian missions, state run settlements and native camps where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were relocated. Beautifully sung and artfully articulated by this vocal quartet led by Jessie Lloyd, the day to day life of the mission period, from cultural identity to love and loss, are explored through secular songs that shed light on the almost forgotten stories of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander elders, families and communities.
“Adriano Cappelletta doesn’t so much arrive on stage as explode, like sweets from a piñata... a delight from start to finish. He oozes effortless charisma... Absolutely exquisite.”
“ ...profoundly moving... the entire collection is sublime.”

Part of the new epic rock cabaret trilogy, The Legend of Queen Kong tells the story of Queen Kong — part rock, part ape, part immortal mythological being — on her journey through time and space on a quest to discover what it means to be human.
