WELCOME The Government is proud to continue its support of Adelaide Festival Centre’s celebrated Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Adelaide Cabaret Festival was recognised as South Australia’s best major event and festival in the 2016 South Australian Tourism Awards. This is a great achievement in the festival state and a testament to the power of the arts and cabaret to bring people together and light up the city as it does each June. With Adelaide Festival Centre and Adelaide Riverbank undergoing an exciting period of renewal and change, I encourage you to discover what’s new at Adelaide Cabaret Festival this year and join me in looking forward to all the redevelopment’s completion will bring! THE HON JACK SNELLING Minister for the Arts
Our fun festival of cabaret is an explosion of artistic creativity, as we mount the biggest and best cabaret festival in the world. Adelaide Cabaret Festival continues to lead the way in revitalising the wonderful interactive art form of cabaret. The cabaret artist shares personal stories and interpretations of songs that reveal the artist’s own thoughts, loves and views of the world. The cabaret artist touches our humanity by sharing with us those special personal moments of beauty and truth. Cabaret explores the many sides of being human, the rational and the irrational in all of us. It appeals to our sensitivity. It jolts our compassionate intelligence. It laughs at our follies. Cabaret is an exciting experience not to be missed. I thank my fellow Festival Advocacy Committee members. FRANK FORD AM Chair, Advocacy Committee Adelaide Cabaret Festival
Welcome to Adelaide Cabaret Festival 2017! Returning artistic directors Ali McGregor and Eddie Perfect have delivered an impressive, radical program. The cabaret spirit is stronger than ever. This year’s Festival invites you to engage with Adelaide Festival Centre’s venues like never before. We’ve repositioned Wintergarden, introduced a new venue, and a number of program highlights will grace Her Majesty’s Theatre’s stage. With redevelopment works underway, please visit the Adelaide Cabaret Fesitval website before your visit for up to date access information. Thank you to our Adelaide Cabaret Festival patrons. Your enthusiasm and loyalty bring this festival to life. I also thank our sponsors for their generous support and the dedicated staff and volunteers who are key to the success of this award-winning festival. DOUGLAS GAUTIER AM CEO & Artistic Director Adelaide Festival Centre

THE TABLES ARE TU RNING ON THIS PLACE...
We hope you love the changes we’ve made to this year’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival! The Wintergarden has moved from the Terrace to its new home on the Riverdeck outside the Dunstan Playhouse so you can now overlook the river and Adelaide Oval. From this side of the building you’ll take in most Cabaret Festival activities and venues including the fabulous Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent (Adelaide Convention Centre lawns). Last year Eddie and I posed the question, ‘What comes next’. This year, with Adelaide Festival Centre under renovation, the world feeling upturned, and the Festival Theatre full of ‘revolting’ children, an underlying sense of revolution couldn’t help but appear… We have programmed great story-tellers, acts that present an entirely different world view to our own, performers that challenge our perception of physicality, gender and aesthetics, new original writing, and some of the finest songbook interpreters in the world. There are performers that you already know and love, dream acts that have been on our wish list for years and acts that we have only just discovered. This year things are going to look a little bit different. Rooms won’t be where they used to be and new spaces will appear. The tables are indeed turning, but I think you’ll find everything you love about this glorious winter festival just around that previously unnoticed corner… ALI McGREGOR Artistic Director Adelaide Cabaret Festival 2017
To say it’s been a tumultuous year would be an understatement. The world seems to have shifted since the last note was sung at Adelaide Cabaret Festival 2016. Once again, Ali and I have assembled a glorious roster of artists who are here to upset the apple cart, shift your perspective, turn over the tables and stain your glad rags with their infectious world-view. As always, we have the world’s best cabaret artists on hand to dig under the comfortable outer-layers of virtue, love, war, propriety and truth. We hope that you’ll enter this festival with the same astonishing open-mindedness as you’ve brought time and time again to the experience of cabaret. 2017 promises to be intimate, unsettling, uplifting and filled with delightful chaos. We hope you’ll get dirty with us, take it all for a spin and come up smelling like roses. The table is set and waiting; all we need is you to come and turn it over. EDDIE PERFECT

AN ICON TO BEHOLD… UNAPOLOGETICALLY HIMSELF, AND WITH A TALENT LIKE THAT, HE HAS NO NEED TO APOLOGIZE. BILLBOARD
ALAN CUMMING
Named one of the most fun people in show business by Time Magazine, Olivier and Tony Award winning actor, singer and author Alan Cumming makes his Cabaret Festival debut with a raucous one-man show – a wildly entertaining mix of intimate stories from the sentimental to the sassy and witty reinterpretations of pop songs and stage classics. The show is inspired by Cumming’s year hosting the infamous Club Cumming in his dressing room during the revival of Cabaret on Broadway and recently scored rave reviews during a residency at New York’s legendary Carlyle Hotel. Joining him on stage for a night of irreverent humour and mischief-making is long-time collaborator and Emmy Award winning musical director Lance Horne and band. Alan Cumming is as enthralling and nimble with Shakespeare as he is with show tunes, and an irresistible presence in any room. He’s garnered a legion of fans through his career, including his acclaimed turn as Eli Gold on CBS’s The Good Wife, his work as a columnist, and author of the New York Times best selling memoir, Not My Father's Son.

WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR GUITAR GENIUS PAINTS THE SILVER SCREEN. Featuring PETRA HADEN, THOMAS MORGAN & RUDY ROYSTON
06
Bill Frisell’s bold and inventive playing is often compared to Miles Davis’ virtuosity. A revered guitarist, composer and Grammy® Award winner, his career spans 35 years and 250 recordings. Despite fascinating digressions into avant-garde, noise, bop, folk, country, bluegrass, rock, blues, pop and classical music, he has remained true to jazz. For this concert, Bill is accompanied by three stellar talents and includes selections from his latest recording, When You Wish Upon a Star — unique interpretations of American cinema’s classic tracks.
DIANNE REEVES Dianne Reeves has a vast repertoire that traverses genres with ease, always providing a perfect vehicle to express her vast talent, virtuosity, improvisational prowess, and unique stylings in jazz and R&B. Not only has she been acknowledged with five Grammy® Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album, she has also been accorded an honorary doctorate of music from Julliard. Her timeless voice, vivacious personality and the sheer force of her performance have captivated audiences worldwide. And now, experience the incomparable range, phrasing and timing of this natural wonder – not to be missed.

DILLIE KEANE HELLO DILLIE EXUDES FADED GLAMOUR, A BIT LIKE BRIGHTON SEA FRONT. DAILY MAIL
After 33 years of social and political satire with her musical cabaret trio, Fascinating Aïda, this old trouper extraordinaire is flying solo with a fond look back on her love’s labours lost. Dillie’s songwriting has been compared to Tom Lehrer, Noël Coward and Cole Porter, albeit with a generous sprinkling of unwarranted smut. With some brand new songs, grand old favourites, gorgeous odes of love and disgracefully filthy ditties, she will break your heart, mend it and then send it to the cleaners for pressing. And she’ll give you her recipe for chutney, too. Written by DILLIE KEANE with ADÈLE ANDERSON

There’s no place like home: Courtney Act returns to Oz from LA (via NZ) to take you over the rainbow and under her spell. Star of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Courtney’s vocal pyrotechnics first came to light on Australian Idol and she’ll burn through the hits from AC/DC to Xanadu, whilst casually camping on both sides of the gender divide. You may not be sure if this rebel rebel is a boy or a girl, but there’s no doubt about Courtney’s voice. PAUL KELLY & CAMILLE O’SULLIVAN WITH FEARGAL MURRAY
Iconic Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly and magnetic Irish-French chanteuse Camille O’Sullivan star in this evocative new music theatre work, joined by O’Sullivan’s long-time musical director Feargal Murray. Inspired by the works of W.B. Yeats and other great Irish poets, Ancient Rain combines the spoken word with a song-cycle of new compositions. Kelly and O’Sullivan inhabit a range of diverse characters as they reveal a tapestry of themes, from the cost of love and the price of independence, to the inadequacy of faith and the power of forgiveness. Ancient Rain sees two legendary performers in the intimacy of a theatrical setting. Kelly’s modest yet masterful style meets O’Sullivan’s powerful vulnerability, taking you on a journey of loss, yearning and redemption.

THE VERY WORST OF THE
TIGER LILLIES
Image: Bill Evans
The Tiger Lillies present their fiercest, filthiest tunes for your perverse pleasure. Formed in London in 1989, the Olivier Award winners’ distinctive musical style melds the macabre magic of pre-war Berlin, anarchic opera and gypsy music with the razor edge of punk. Led by the accordion-wielding ‘criminal castrato' Martyn Jacques, this Grammy® nominated, three-piece will intoxicate you with a riotous cocktail of decadent cabaret and music-hall antics with a twist of bar brawl. They’re at their best when they’re at their worst.

T I N A DEL TWIST
There are no limits to Mr Limits' caustic observations on life, love and the ghastly state of the world. Under the influence of Weill, Waits, Porter, Coward and even Schubert, Dusty’s dry wit and three-octave range covers everything from the joys of drinking to the moral poverty of wealth and death’s warm embrace. Irreverent, whimsical and scathingly satirical, these dark jewels light up the abyss.
She may not be as glorious as in her heyday (it was one Tuesday in November) but Tina’s gin-soaked memory can still vaguely recall most of the lyrics – sometimes even twice – to all the classics, backed by her guitar maestro, Stephen Weir. A genius comic invention of multi-talented Wes Snelling, the velvet draped Tina del Twist has a voice as smooth as honey and a wit that could shred brie.

As the Weimar Republic descended into chaos, the people escaped into hedonistic abandon and an explosion of creativity. Under this easy cover, the Nazi Party slowly slithered into power. With Hitler’s ascent, Germany’s greatest composers fled to seek freedom in the four corners of the world. Through the prodigious talents of baritone Peter Coleman-Wright AO and four virtuoso saxophonists of the Nexas Quartet, we follow the musical journey of these exiles from Berlin and Vienna to New York and beyond with a mixture of political songs from the Weimar period, the musical theatre of Weill, and the cabaret and song from Stolz and Schreker.

MEOW MEETS THE GRAND OLD DAME.
Global audiences have been hypnotised, inspired and terrified by her ‘kamikaze cabaret’. Now, it’s our turn once more to surrender to the sultry charms of actress, singer, dancer and diva, Meow Meow, whose previous genre-busting collaborations include Pink Martini, Barry Humphries, Amanda Palmer, the Dresden Dolls, and symphony and philharmonic orchestras. For this exclusive performance, Meow Meow joins forces with the Orchester der Kleinen Regiment to summon the ghosts of Her Majesty’s Theatre, past, present and future. Don’t miss this sensationally mischievous performer pitch her honey-cream voice into a one-off musical homage to the Grand Old Lady of Grote Street. A fantastical song cycle on the half remembered, misreported history of Her Majesty's Theatre. Sat 7:30pm Sun 5pm

Flushed by four years’ success from Edinburgh to Toronto (and a week-3 weekly winner at the Adelaide Fringe), comes Penny Ashton’s collaboration with Jane Austen (deceased). How will Miss Elspeth battle literary snobbery, cousin Horatio’s digestions and her mother’s nerves, armed only with a blushing countenance, excellent ukulele skills and being quite bright, really, for a girl? In this hilarious, one-(freakishly talented)-woman show, Penny tackles all of Austen’s characters with song, dance and appalling cross-stitching.

The inspiration to Dylan’s frankness, Cohen’s confessional songs and Bowie’s bravado, Jacques Brel was an incomparable trailblazer. Almost 40 years after his untimely passing, Ali McGregor directs a corps of festival artists in this moving homage to the greatest popular singer in the French language and master of modern chanson. After putting together the greatest magical variety stunt show ever, they’ve fired the cast and gone it alone in a brand new show. What could possibly go wrong?
Simon Hall (Yon) is not only a third of Tripod, he’s also the second wedding singer. Ready to tie the knot again? You're gonna need someone to sing you through that. Backed by his infamous brass band, the Brass Ring, Simon will serenade your re-coupling, reminding you that it will be better this time because it was so bad the last time. Featuring such soon-to-be-hits as: 'My Parents' Breakup (Was Better Than Your Parents' Breakup)', 'Guilt Is My Engine' and 'Left Out of A Threesome', Simon will manage your expectations with sweetness but firmness.

CAROLE KVIKA BULLI & DEBRA N BYRNEG Carole King is revered as the most successful female songwriter in pop history. Her masterpiece Tapestry still stands as one of the world’s best-selling albums. Now, 46 years after its release, it’s been re-imagined as the centrepiece of this concert performed by two of Australia’s most loved and admired vocalists, Vika Bull and Debra Byrne, backed by The Brill Band, featuring some of Australia’s finest musicians. With its string of mega-hits, ‘I Feel the Earth Move’, ‘You’ve Got A Friend’, ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman’ and ‘It’s Too Late’, Tapestry was number one on the Billboard chart for 15 weeks and sold over 25-million copies worldwide. He’s been described as obscenely intelligent, beautifully filthy and rib-crackingly funny… by himself, naturally. Because where vanity meets desperation and self-awareness meets a brick wall, that’s where you’ll find Reuben Kaye. After travelling the world from spiegeltent to spiegeltent, drink to drink and man to man, the winner of Best Cabaret in the 2017 Adelaide Fringe and star of London’s infamous home of cabaret, Café De Paris, relates his rise from the butt of school bullying to gay superhero in defence of a world gone completely insane. Their last outing earned a Green Room nomination at the 2015 Melbourne Cabaret Festival and some time in a padded cell. So, flouting all medical and legal sanctions, the Strange Bedfellows have fled the nuthouse for the asylum of centre stage. Underfunded, over-lubricated and outrageous, Australian opera’s enfants terribles present more lithium-laced musical shock therapy backed by Daryl ‘Daggers’ Wallis on keyboard. You won’t believe what sounds – and words – come out of their mouths. Miss this and you’re as crazy as they are.

Catherine Alcorn lets it all out after her nomination for Best Cabaret Show at the 2016 Sydney Theatre Awards. Hailed as ‘magnificent’ and ‘masterful’ with ‘a voice to die for’, Catherine's intimate new show sizzles with craftily concocted interpretations of songs by our decade’s demigods that boldly blur between rock and rap, blues and bluegrass, Blondie to Beyonce. Backed by a smoking-hot trio who lend intricate instrumentation and velvet harmonies to her voluptuous voice and killer wit. A masterclass in song interpretation. BRILLIANTLY PLAYFUL. MICHAEL FEINSTEIN SINATRA AND FRIENDS
USA
Michael Feinstein, five-time Grammy and two-time Emmy nominated ambassador to the Great American Songbook, returns to Adelaide Cabaret Festival to perform a stunning tribute with a 17 piece big band. Paying tribute to Frank Sinatra and his friends, Feinstein will draw on inspiration from his own close personal friendships with Liza Minnelli, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, Sammy Davis Jr, and many others – allowing him to offer a very different perspective and point of view in this dazzling celebration of the era. Balancing amazing swing arrangements with the beautiful orchestrations of famous ballads as well as vintage arrangements not heard publicly in many years or ever, it’s about celebrating legendary musicians and finding unique arrangements that give a broader sense of who they really were.

A STYLISH AND GENEROUS WAY TO CLOSE ADELAIDE CABARET FESTIVAL... LET’S HOPE THE IDEA IS REPRISED IN YEARS TO COME. THE BAREFOOT REVIEW
Image: Adrian Cowell
CLOSING VARIETY GALA Few artistic endeavours match cabaret’s power to channel dissent and challenge the status quo. But it’s always been a place to celebrate love and inclusivity, too. So, Ali and Eddie have devised a gala closing on our last night to bring these two themes together with anthems, battle cries and love songs to humanity. Standing shoulder to shoulder with them as they storm the battlements and liberate the people of Adelaide with love will be some of the brightest stars of the Festival with their own personal favourite songs of love and revolution. We’re going out with a bang.
