W HA T ‘S S HOWING
Congratulations to Artistic Director David Campbell, Associate Producer Lisa Campbell and the rest of the Cabaret team for pulling together another outstanding program of diverse cabaret performers and performances. Special thanks to Festival founder Frank Ford and you, our loyal audiences. Whether you are joining us from around the corner or around the globe, you are cordially invited to the 10th birthday celebrations. I look forward to seeing you in June, for the biggest Adelaide Cabaret Festival yet! Douglas Gautier Artistic Director & CEO, Adelaide Festival Centre Welcome to the 10th year of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival! It is amazing to think that in ten years this has become the biggest cabaret event in the world! After the incredible success of last year the team and I have once again tried to put together a program that inspires, excites and leaves the audience wanting more. From the students who are discovering and performing the joys of the art form of Cabaret for the first time in High School Cabaret , to the jaw dropping journey that is Smoke & Mirrors . Once again we are thrilled to host acts from around the world under the one roof as we make winter in Adelaide burn white hot with talent. We have added some different elements to this year’s line-up which I hope will get the whole town talking once again. We’re bringing back the Gala (which has sold out in record time!), discovering and promoting new Australian talent, and hosting a headline artist, whose success and style go way beyond her musical dynasty. As always, all this would be impossible without the fantastic team here at the Adelaide Festival Centre. We are also grateful to our principal partner FOXTEL, our continuing and ever faithful sponsors and partners, and the new partners who are joining the Festival for the first time this year. As you can see, my excitement for this year is almost too much to contain. See you there. David Campbell Artistic Director, Adelaide Cabaret Festival
Its success is a great credit to the dedication and talent of the Artistic Directors Julia Holt and David Campbell, the Cabaret Festival team and the entire Adelaide Festival Centre staff. Cabaret comes in many forms, changing its colour like a chameleon from pretty pink to ‘very shocking blue’, as it reflects our sentiments or satirises our follies. Cabaret can mix a heady cocktail, making you cry and laugh at the same time! So come to the cabaret for a tonic of laughter and the love of life. I thank my fellow Adelaide Cabaret Committee members, Simon Burke, Nicky Downer AM, Sasha Carruozzo, Zannie Flanagan, Steve Kernaghan and Amanda Ward for their enthusiastic advocacy of this unique event. Frank Ford AM Chair, Adelaide Cabaret Festival Committee

The biggest cabaret festival of its kind in the world, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival has won the hearts of artists and audiences for its celebration and dedication to the artform that is cabaret.
From inception Adelaide embraced the Adelaide Cabaret Festival enthusiastically, creating within ten years the world’s best and biggest cabaret festival. When I conceived the idea of a cabaret festival I had no idea it would blossom into such a rare and exotic flower of artistic exuberance.

Stephen Schwartz is - quite simply - one of the most prolific and successful musical theatre writers of all time. Having had three shows run on Broadway before the age of 26, his talents truly know no bounds. Best known for musicals such as Godspell , Pippin , Children of Eden and Wicked , Stephen has also ventured onto the silver screen, writing scores for such animated classics as Pocahontas , The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Prince of Egypt . As a result, he has won almost every major award going, including three Oscars, three Grammys, four Drama Desk Awards, one Golden Globe and a “tiny handful of tennis trophies”, as he playfully adds.

Robyn Archer’s tribute to French cabaret in last year’s Festival was a sold-out success. This year, she returns to cross the border into the cultural explosion of the Weimar Republic, joined once more by Michael Morley and a band of superb musicians, including accordionist George Butrumlis. Our expert guide leads us back to the birth of European modernism, illuminating our journey with the music of Brecht, Weill, Tucholsky and Hollaender. In a performance of poetic and musical brilliance, Robyn gives an authentic voice to one of the most moving and disturbing eras of the twentieth century.

Alex Rathgeber A seductive insigh Experiment into an iconic songboto k On the surface, Cole Porter wrote lovely songs about love, life and sensual expression with a timeless sense of wit and style. Experiment digs deeper however, to reveal the master’s knack for subversion. Direct from starring in Simon Phillips’ The Drowsy Chaperone with Geoffrey Rush, Alex Rathgeber ( The Boy Friend , Phantom of the Opera ) revels in the erotic undercurrent of some of the 20th century’s best-loved songs, including Too Darn Hot and Anything Goes .

Joint winner of the 2009 Sydney Cabaret Showcase, Tom Sharah never lets up in his full-on and original show Que Sera Sharah with stories and observations pulled together by a witty repertoire of pop tunes, old and new.
Joint winner of the 2009 Sydney Cabaret Showcase, Elizabeth Cousemacker takes you on a journey of classic cabaret that compares and contrasts works by three of the great masters of sophisticated song.
Tom is as talented a stand-up comedian as he is a singer. This outrageous young performer will have you in stitches, whether confessing to a pubescent Spice Girls obsession, or setting the scene for the ups and downs of today’s young ‘Romantic-with-Attitude”.
Enjoy the wit and wisdom of Noël Coward; the pointed, political world of Kurt Weill; and the panache and poignancy of Cole Porter. This is a show for those in the know: a delightful hour to remind us that cabaret is about life, love and – above all – wonderful music.
“Singer/comedian, Tom Sharah, is the cabaret voice of Generation Y, and what a voice. This guy was born to be on stage.” Phil Scott

“Nouvelle Vague have an especially potent appeal live.”
He’s a singer, storyteller, comedian, tap-dancer… he even tap-dances whilst playing the piano! Mark Nadler has performed in every major nightclub in New York (including the legendary Sardi’s, where his caricature now hangs among the other famous faces), LA and London. He’s even accompanied Dame Edna on Broadway.

French band, Nouvelle Vague, created a new world order with its unique bossa nova take on punk and new wave classics. The group’s albums have now sold well over half-a-million copies, and Australian audiences especially love the band’s coquettish versions of the late-‘70s and early-‘80s classics by Joy Division, Depeche Mode, The Clash, The Buzzcocks and many more. Let Nouvelle Vague top off your evening at the Cabaret Festival by rearranging your memories in an elegant and stylish fashion.
